Happy Thursday,
We have a very special post for you today! Cozmic One has been training in New York with John Shirreffs, and today’s post is an update on his progress–straight from Dottie and John!
Enjoy!
-Team Z
Greetings from Barn 41—Belmont Park, New York!
Hello Everyone,
We hope each of you is doing very well. Everything here is moving right along. It is a beautiful fall day in New York and we thought it would be fun to share a COZMIC ONE update with you.
Coz is a big, strong, handsome colt! He loves to train and and enjoys going to the race track. He exhibits high energy levels and shows great strength and endurance. Another quality John comments about often is his intelligence. He’s a very smart colt, another trait he definitely shares with his Mother.
Physically, it is quite interesting to note how his body is changing and maturing as a result of his exercise and training program. Coz is developing a very strong shoulder and a long length of stride, two physical qualities John so admired in Zenyatta as she prepared for racing. Needless to say, it is exciting to see her colt developing them as well.
Each day’s lessons builds upon the prior skills taught. Coz has breezed a ½ mile in company twice galloping out with energy, as well as working on his starting gate lessons. He’s currently jogged out of the gate twice and will continue to do more gate work as he gets closer to running. Physically and mentally, Coz is developing a very solid foundation in all skills so necessary for his future career as a racehorse.
Cozmic One is a very busy guy each day. Here’s this morning:
5:30 a.m. Coz is up and looking out of his stall ready to begin his day. He is hand-walked for about 30 minutes each morning.
6:00 a.m. Coz is now back in his stall and gets brushed and ready for his breakfast. He loves to eat!
8:15 a.m. He is tacked up and ready to walk to the paddock to begin his exercise on the main track. At Belmont Park, it is a long walk from our barn to the paddock and Coz enjoys doing this. It helps him ‘warm up’ and he gets a chance to see everything going on and experience all types of noises and sounds that happen at the race track. Once in the paddock, he walks around, stands in a saddling stall for a bit, and gets to experience this environment.
8:45 a.m. Coz leaves the paddock to walk through the tunnel to the main track. Once on the main track, he stands for a few minutes and then walks to the 1 ¼ pole (Belmont is a 1 ½ mile oval), turns and jogs to the ⅞ pole, and then gallops 1 ½ miles at a very good pace.
He then stands for a few moments preparing to leave the main track and begin his walk back to the barn.
10:15 a.m. Once back at the barn, Coz continues to cool out by walking around the shed row. He has a bath and returns to his stall for further grooming.
11:00 a.m. IT’S LUNCH TIME! This is truly one of his favorite times of the day! Coz is definitely a good eater who has a very good appetite. One of his favorite treats are the Apple Cookies the Mosses send to the barn for him and his pals. He absolutely LOVES them!
It is so special having Coz in the barn. Having worked with Zenyatta and having her with us each day for so many years, it is a complete JOY to get to know her son so intimately and work with him every day. As John commented last night, “At this time, I could not be more pleased with his progress.”
As Zenyatta would say, this is TOO CUTE! Without a doubt, she would be very proud of him!
Have a wonderful week!
With Love,
Hugs to all~
Coz, John and Dottie

I’m curious to know if Coz has inherited his mother’s propensity to ‘strut.’ Thanks for the updates!
Z13Rulz
Zenyatta’s ‘strut’ was not genetic.
It was a behavior that expressed itself when she underwent dressage training on the track. While it was a desirable outlet for Zenyatta’s anticipatory energy before a race, striking like that is NOT desirable in a colt/stallion.
rachel
why is it not ok for a colt to learn dressage stuff and use that as a stress management for them but it was ok for a filly to learn it?
Z13Rulz
It’s fine for a colt to learn dressage but Zenyatta’s dance wasn’t dressage.
Zenyatta was taught basic dressage to learn how to use that big body of her’s. How to channel her power into momentum and come up ‘on the muscle’. She wasn’t taught the Spanish Walk, the way an Andalusian would be taught the Spanish Walk.
She expressed her eagerness and her energy through that reach of the foreleg. Some horses express their eagerness through giving a small buck, tossing their heads, pawing the ground. Zenyatta learned that she could reach with that off foreleg and it was okay with her handler, eventually encouraged because it was her signature ‘dance’.
But it was still, at it’s foundation, an expression of eager nerves.
Stallions and colts, strike with their front legs as a dominance display. Watch stallions and colts in the wild, they strike at each other to bully one another. I’m bigger and tougher than you so back off! The last thing you want is to allow a colt to get away with ‘bullying’ his human handlers because when he does eventually go the breeding shed, he can become a very dangerous stallion to manage.
pamhomeier
Wow! That is so interesting! I never dreamed she didn’t come up with that ‘strut’ all on her own. What an idea!

Dottie, John, and Coz–what a wonderful surprise for today. Thank you for the great pictures and for the update on Coz’s schedule.
Coz–it seems like only yesterday that you were running around with your mom in the paddock, kicking and snorting. I will still be saying this when you are a senior horse!
I am so glad you are being a good boy and learning your lessons. Prayers for God to keep you safe always.

Coz you look awesome!!!! Sounds like your training is going along quite well. When I turn on my computer everyday the first thing I see is Zenny and Coz when he was just a baby. When I look at him then and now it is hard to believe what a difference two years can make. Thank you Dottie and John for taking the time to update us, and for taking such good care of Coz. And then it won’t be that much longer until Ziconic arrives. I know Zenny is sure proud of her babies.

What a wonderful, uplifting treat in a week that has been filled with so much sad news! There are just no words to say how much I enjoyed hearing from you, Dottie, and seeing John’s wonderful photos. It is just unbelievable how much Coz has grown up. I know that none of us will ever forget the pictures of Ann Moss in the stall with him when he was born (not to mention Zenyatta’s excited accounts of her new son :-). Everyone here shares the knowledge that he is in the very best of hands, and we look forward to seeing him on the track when he is ready.
With another BC coming up soon, I have to say, Dottie, that you have given us a gift that probably extends beyond your wildest imagination when you started the diary. In addition to the daily exchanges here among our dear friends on this blog, when those of us who can make the trip to Santa Anita meet up at the Zenny statue, it will be like “old home week.” The smiles and tears and hugs, as we greet friends we NEVER would have had otherwise, are a testament to the good that you created and to the legacy of Zenyatta! Thank you from the bottom of MY hear too! ♥♥♥

What a handsome dude! It’s nice to hear an update. Has anyone heard anything about Zenyatta’s full brother? He should be in training by now, I would think.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Liz:
Here is a photo of him that Z’ster Maryp NY posted on Page 8 of the previous Blog. He was supposed to go to a farm in Ocala to train. May be there already. He’s gorgeous. You can Z, Street Cry, V and COZ in him. He has a white star like Vertigineux’s on his face, which is not seen in this photo. The second photo is of him and V when he was very little. Love and Hugs, JB

Hi Coz, John and Dottie :
What a wonderful surprise to hear from all of you!! I remember reading an article that John was anticipating that maybe Coz’s first race would be before the end of Belmont’s fall meet. I have been looking every day at my virtual stable notices to see if there were any announcements. I’m so thrilled to read this update on Coz’s progess.
Coz: I wrote you a note when you left Lanes End to begin your training in FL. I said that it was very important to stretch before each workout. I know your Mother told you that too. I said that it was important to take your lessons seriously. John tells us that you have done exactly that. I also said that it was important to get a good night sleep, and don’t stay up too late partying with the other kids. John tells us that you have your head out of the stall in the morning ready to go.
We are so proud of you Coz. I cannot wait to see your first race. I will be there for sure cheering you on.
You will be too cute!! I hear horses like ginger snap cookies too.
Thanks so much for the update. I’ll be standing by waiting for an announcement.
Love and hugs to all of you.
Love
Linda
