Happy Thursday,
We have a very special post for you today! Cozmic One has been training in New York with John Shirreffs, and today’s post is an update on his progress–straight from Dottie and John!
Enjoy!
-Team Z
Greetings from Barn 41—Belmont Park, New York!
Hello Everyone,
We hope each of you is doing very well. Everything here is moving right along. It is a beautiful fall day in New York and we thought it would be fun to share a COZMIC ONE update with you.
Coz is a big, strong, handsome colt! He loves to train and and enjoys going to the race track. He exhibits high energy levels and shows great strength and endurance. Another quality John comments about often is his intelligence. He’s a very smart colt, another trait he definitely shares with his Mother.
Physically, it is quite interesting to note how his body is changing and maturing as a result of his exercise and training program. Coz is developing a very strong shoulder and a long length of stride, two physical qualities John so admired in Zenyatta as she prepared for racing. Needless to say, it is exciting to see her colt developing them as well.
Each day’s lessons builds upon the prior skills taught. Coz has breezed a ½ mile in company twice galloping out with energy, as well as working on his starting gate lessons. He’s currently jogged out of the gate twice and will continue to do more gate work as he gets closer to running. Physically and mentally, Coz is developing a very solid foundation in all skills so necessary for his future career as a racehorse.
Cozmic One is a very busy guy each day. Here’s this morning:
5:30 a.m. Coz is up and looking out of his stall ready to begin his day. He is hand-walked for about 30 minutes each morning.
6:00 a.m. Coz is now back in his stall and gets brushed and ready for his breakfast. He loves to eat!
8:15 a.m. He is tacked up and ready to walk to the paddock to begin his exercise on the main track. At Belmont Park, it is a long walk from our barn to the paddock and Coz enjoys doing this. It helps him ‘warm up’ and he gets a chance to see everything going on and experience all types of noises and sounds that happen at the race track. Once in the paddock, he walks around, stands in a saddling stall for a bit, and gets to experience this environment.
8:45 a.m. Coz leaves the paddock to walk through the tunnel to the main track. Once on the main track, he stands for a few minutes and then walks to the 1 ¼ pole (Belmont is a 1 ½ mile oval), turns and jogs to the ⅞ pole, and then gallops 1 ½ miles at a very good pace.
He then stands for a few moments preparing to leave the main track and begin his walk back to the barn.
10:15 a.m. Once back at the barn, Coz continues to cool out by walking around the shed row. He has a bath and returns to his stall for further grooming.
11:00 a.m. IT’S LUNCH TIME! This is truly one of his favorite times of the day! Coz is definitely a good eater who has a very good appetite. One of his favorite treats are the Apple Cookies the Mosses send to the barn for him and his pals. He absolutely LOVES them!
It is so special having Coz in the barn. Having worked with Zenyatta and having her with us each day for so many years, it is a complete JOY to get to know her son so intimately and work with him every day. As John commented last night, “At this time, I could not be more pleased with his progress.”
As Zenyatta would say, this is TOO CUTE! Without a doubt, she would be very proud of him!
Have a wonderful week!
With Love,
Hugs to all~
Coz, John and Dottie

@KathyR–My sympathies to you in your “companion horse” problem. We have been there, and it certainly makes us more tense, which in turn makes our horses more tense. Hope it gets resolved soon. Prayers toward that end.
@Judy B–thanks for the good report. Yes, horses make excellent supervisors. LOL. Hugs to you and LM too.

Dear Sheena,
I’m sorry you have a headache. Feel better soon! Feeling so bad for Tom and Will. Very heartbreaking. Tom is a wonderful man. Mango’s charity is so worthwhile. Bless her and her moms and all the recipients. Marty dressed as a porcupine was just precious. I’ll have to admit, though, I thought he was dressed as a hedgehog. lol Will look for that video you mentioned on Joey’s page. I caught the wolf video you had mentioned the other day. It was WONDERFUL! Have a good Friday and enjoy the weekend. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Watched the Boots video. Very sweet. I worry, however, about the kittens thinking all dogs are going to be that gentle!
Hugs, Kathy.

Dear Sheena
I can’t thank you enough for the link to Tom and Will and their story on facebook.
I was a blubbering mess and yet would not have wanted to miss this beautiful story,it is why we are here.To love,to make the road a little gentler and to give seniors/ all animals who have been forgotten and neglected a chance to live with love and a new lease on life.It takes time and faith and trust, but the power of love can conquer a broken spirit..The saying on Tom’s mug is so true : Will’s Wisdom:
“It’s never to late to trust again
To love or to be loved again
And it’s never too late to live again.”
The photos of Tom and his dog Will from “Following Atticus” were beautiful and showed what a wonderful time Will has had with Tom and how nature and Tom’s love brought Will back, literally.
Healing is possible for animals and humans and we hope to find a few kind souls to help us on our way.Dubai,Tiny Thurzel, and so many more horses and pets benefit from the love and care they receive from so many members of this blog.
Tom is such a good human being caring for this old soul with such kindness and dedication. I am so sad for this day of saying Goodbye to Will and pray for Tom. What a deep, joyful connection they had, hard fought in the early days and forever rewarding and full of deep abiding love. It makes me believe in the power of love and the good people in the world. Big hugs, hope you feel better. Love,Debbie
Dear Max
Thank-you for the Hovis update and so glad you are here this Fri. and that you are OK.
Hovis, your picture is as handsome as ever.I am so sorry the needle man is coming again, hope you feel better and that there is not too much purple or missing feathers after the ordeal. You are right on the money. If your hack mates are prancing and carrying on,of course you are going to “spin around and lead the charge to freedom”from who knows what kind of ghastly enemy/threat!!!!You are totally justified although it does create some excitement for your Mom AND may not help the recovery process. Nevertheless,it is not your fault. I am rooting for you and hope you feel 100% soon. With love and respect,Debbie
KathyR
Dear Celeste, Ann, Sue, Judy and Barbara:
Many thanks for your words of support and wisdom regarding the pushy Red. My biggest concern is that I’m becoming afraid to go into the paddock and I know that is puzzling my little girl. Hopefully the Elegant Emily will be back today (Saturday) to give advice. Otherwise I’ll just have to halter Red (who is a real handful to lead) and take him out first and then go to my little girl.
Oh, and did I tell you that we’ve got snakes in the paddock? Eastern browns, who are cranky like Red, and Red bellied blacks which are much more placid. The grass is knee high and higher, so it’s an exercise to go in looking for snakes and Red. Am trying that theory on keeping bears away if you’re walking in the woods – you know calling out “Hey bear” or something like that. Just hope it translates into snake. Hugs KathyR

Dear Kathy R:
You’re cracking me up. Sooo funny. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Snakes???? OMG! Assume they are not a threat to the horses, but you are a brave person to go in there KathyR. Do you carry a big stick or something?
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Debbie.I am so glad you have got to “know” Tom and Will, if you’ve read my email Will wasn’t euthanized today. The weather wasn’t suitable to go on the mountainside so it will be tomorrow now.So many of us, humans included, are forgotten when we get older.Tom is an inspiration to us all and we could all learn a valuable lesson from him.Love and hugs Sheena.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Thank you for your kind thought regarding my headache.I’ve been drinking lots of sweet tea,I have never been a fan of coffee although I always keep a jar of instant in the house.I might try a cup.Poor Hovis with Herman the German visiting him again.I hope there were not too many needles involved but I’m sure mini-mother took great care of him!Maybe we’ll get news from Sandy.
The Fly is back on the 16th of Nov but Faugheen and Annie Power are entered as well!Paul is exercising some of his horses at Chepstow tomorrow,he’s having a slow start to the season.Brown Panther isn’t really used to a pony accompanying him to post.I remember you saying the UK horses were on Lasix I hope that didn’t upset him.Her Majesty sent a tweet today ,they have an official account @British Monarchy.I hope she hasn’t read her spoof account! The Moose must be freed.Sheena.

Dear Sheena:
Hope you feel better soon. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Sheena. Instant coffee might help. Caffeine is good for headaches.
The Panther as far as I know only had lasix on race day. He was acting up before that. Threw the exercise rider on Friday. Not sure why this happened because jockey said it was not usual for the Panther to be that worked up. He was rattled from his first hoof step on the track. Was there a filly nearby?
Don’t worry about the pony. The Panther will be okay with him. When he was corralled by the outrider at Woodbine, he cooperated with that pony. He might have been tired after his run however. Wow, he looked fabulous running alone on that track.
Moose, has the beak thrown in the towel yet?
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Hope the Panther is calmer on BC Day and not distracted by the ladies. Godspeed BP. Power Up Danny, Beast, Big Trouble, Beholder, Dubai, Hovis and all who are ill or injured. Snake, COZ and Ebby, train well! Street Cry, gone too soon! TT, love you forever! Loose The Moose! Love and Hugs, JB

JudyB. Wonder if Annie is running in that race to avoid the Moose? Moosie is not known for being on a race course for longer than the start.
Moose, get those hooves moving.

Dear Max:
Could be. Would love to see Moose have a chance to to give it another try. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max.Have heard of a school shooting in Washington State.Think the shooter has died.I can’t understand Panther’s behaviour,he ‘s always been well behaved in the races I’ve seen him run.Moosie’s friend Gary is a big help for the nervy horses at the start but,of course,we all know no one tells the Moose what to do.I am really looking forward to the jumps now and seeing Kauto’s statue unveiled on Boxing day and who knows maybeThe Return of the Moose .That’s a film title if ever there was one!!!Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Terrible news all of this week. Shooting in Canada, ebola in NY and now kids being shot at in a school. I just cannot watch any more of this. Life is just so previous and easily lost.
Only the Panther knows what upset him, although he looked just feisty rather than upset. There were reports that he was brimming with confidence all the preceding week. He was however all fired up when he came on the track. The other horses were paraded in a circle as usual before the race, but the Panther came out late. Hillstar with Ryan Moore was very calm. You would have loved to see how the Panther once loose manoeuvred his way around the starting gate to get out on the track on his own. Doubtful we will ever see the Moose racing to get out on the track in order to bolt away.
The jump season will be good, especially Mullins’ horses. Moosie says that the other Middleham horses are less famous than him. Maybe true.
Moose, free yourself from the chains of the beak.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Moose is close to 4000 twitter followers now.No other horse racing at this time has so many fans!It pays to stand still. The Moose must be freed.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. One advantage of being a Moose follower is that you do not have to run hard to keep up with the elusive equine. Walking with do, or just standing still.
Beak, give the Moose his freedom.

Dear Judy B; At our CV horse sanctuary, when Jo had her laminitis and she was being treated for it, she then developed an absess (however you spell it). She was watched and it was kept clean. Jo recovered from it all.
But blood work from her indicated certain things. Since she apparently foundered before we ever got her, Jo at 26 is on a strict regiment because of her bloodwork results. NO more treats, Jo can not go out and graze with the others which to me is so sad. She gets a small amount of feed and then feeds with hay. I hope this will not be the case for Dubai. I am praying for total recovery of Dubai to then continue his “happy days”.
Oh Charlie knows you well and has formed a love an attachment to you watching your every move!! Sir always watched me. I think Charlie has chosen the right person!!
love n hugs to you, Sally B

Smith Hopes to Add to Breeders’ Cup Record
HorseRacingNation.com October 23, 2014
Mike Smith has 20 Breeders’ Cup victories, more than any jockey. Retired Hall of Fame riding great Jerry Bailey has 15, and John Velazquez 12, second to Smith among active riders.
Smith, inducted into racing’s Hall of Fame in 2003, attributes his success to more than skill, luck and longevity. How about favorable circumstances?

Sending healing prayers and good thoughts for Steve. He is such an important part of Team Zenyatta. He seems to have a lot of strength and resiliency and I pray he can get through this. The Zenyatta Family, far and wide, will be pulling for him. God bless the Mosses for helping with his care and treatment.

Little Thurzel update.
I’m not reporting to you from the hospital, but did need a stiff drink when I got back from my visit to Jeir. The herd were right up the top of the paddock, and when I went up my little girl initially came forward, but Red bustled up and pushed across in front of her, blocking access. Gave him a firm push on the shoulder, but he was not to be moved. So gave the girl a carrot across his back. He than swung about with his back to me, so I hastily abandoned by position, which was a good thing, as he kicked. I tried to get to my girl’s shoulder to see if I could get the lead rope across her neck and then get the halter on, but he was back. So I abandoned that idea and got out of the paddock. By the time I’d gone down the hill, the owner of the other two (Romeo and Leo) was up the top taking Romeo out. Thought this was my chance, as my little girl had ambled down the hill behind her. Went into the paddock, was spotted by Red who was up the top and he set the land speed record galloping down the hill to again block my passage. The other owner was shocked by his behaviour, and very sympathetic with the situation. We both know the answer is the wisdom of the Elegant Emily. But I’ve decided to go back out tomorrow and catch Red and tie him up so I can get my girl. Might be a really, really dumb idea, but it’s my last best hope at the moment because it’s all going backwards in that the little girl is totally confused and refusing to come near me again, as she did after the incident with the farrier. Think I might have to call in the big guns and get the help of St Frank if he can spare the time. Hugs KathyR
PS: No sign of snakes, brown or black today. Just a snaky horse.
Max
KathyR. This is a problem but there is another angle here which is not all so bad. It looks like you’ve good another horse who loves you. You will find a way to deal. Study Red, find out how he thinks and you will learn how to handle him. Best wishes to the Tiny one. Hope that those snakes leave. Horses don’t like those critters.
KathyR
Dear Max
I don’t think that a horse that turns and tries to kick you with its hind legs is in love with you. Red has become a serious problem, recognised by the folk at Jeir Park. My priority is and always will be the welfare of my little girl, and not Red. I’ve made it clear that I am a total amateur in how to handle a horse, and when I realised that there was a possibility that Thurzel was to become my horse I went on an extremely steep learning curve on how to groom and handle a horse. And I’m going to be an amateur for a long time yet. But I feel a lot of resentment towards Red because his behaviour is contributing, as I’ve said, to a serious backwards step in my little girl’s behaviour to me. And all the so-called “love” from Red will not make me feel good about that. I also don’t have either the time nor the energy to study just what it is that makes Red the way he is. He is not my responsibility: Thurzel is. KathyR
Max
KathyR. Did not realize that Red was so nasty toward you. Is he like that with everyone or just you? Not love message for sure. Can’t you move your Thurzel to another paddock?
Ann NC
Kathy R- If you can charm those snakes…YIKES…you can charm the wild man Red!
Celeste_in_TX
Only having had our OTTB for almost nine months, I have to tell you up front that I am no expert, but I have been observing the herd behavior at the barn where we board Sugarfoot, so I can share with you what I’ve noticed so maybe it will help your situation with Red. Of course, that is assuming that he is the herd boss of his group, it looks like he taken possession of your Thurzel as one of his band and he is trying to keep you from taking her away. Yes, even if he is a gelding which I’m pretty sure he must be if he is out with a group – they can still think they are pretty hot stuff even if they don’t really have the ability to breed. Red might just be trying to control her and not aiming his aggression towards you, if that makes sense, but he is just acting out how he would be if another horse came and tried to move Thurzel away from him. Being very possessive, which really isn’t fair to Thurzel or to you. Since Thurzel is timid, you don’t want to upset her by shouting at him or slapping, but maybe if you take an extra rope with you when go to gather her up and just kind of swing it at him, that might make him move away. I sure wish I had some answers and could help you with this problem – you have so much love to give to your horse and keep running into such obstacles. I’d be certainly scared of the snakes, too – yikes!!
SallyB.(AuntiecherishesZandheryoung)
Celeste, I like your reasoning and possible suggestions for Kathy R.
Kathy R. It is too bad Thurzel can not be in a nearby paddock or pasture, so you can be with Thurzel easier.
I have seen the rope swinging and it does seem to work. Above all, I have learned how powerful a horse can really be. Never get yourself between two of them. They could flee from a sudden noise etc. At that moment they will not be concerned as to who is in the way. I am learning like you are.
hugs, Sally B

Adelaide wins the Group One WS Cox Plate
justhorseracing Oct. 25 2014
Irish galloper Adelaide has ensured another triumph for international horses during the Melbourne spring carnival with a stirring win in the WS Cox Plate.
A week after Admire Rakti’s Caulfield Cup triumph for Japan, Adelaide came from last to beat Australia’s weight-for-age stars at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
Trained by the Irish maestro Aidan O’Brien and ridden by English hoop Ryan Moore, Adelaide had to produce a 1000-metre run to chase down Fawkner.

If you check out Team Z news on Twitter for October 22 to the right on this website, there is a beautiful shot of the Queen’s statue at Santa Anita. There are many beautiful horses, but there is none more charismatically beautiful than Zenyatta. She takes your breath away every time that you look at her. In a sometimes nasty world, Zenyatta is a beacon in the darkness for the light and for goodness.
Kathy
Max,
That is a great shot. Zenyatta is indeed a beacon of hope in this very dark world. She is our Queen!
KathyR
Dear Bluegrass Girl
Loved the run of both Adelaide and Admire Rakti in their respective races, but like most racing fans Downunder feel this confirms a contempt we have for the local thoroughbred industry. Australia is now buying its Melbourne Cup (and other) winners, not breeding them. The Kiwis still try to play the game, but increasingly buyers want the instant success and are not prepared to breed and train our own to win these iconic races. Gai Waterhouse won her first Melbourne Cup with an import, and has another entered for this year’s cup, as do most of the top trainers in the country. One of the greatest names in Australian racing, Bart Cummings, know as the Cups King for the number of winners he has trained lamented this fact several years ago. The irony is, I wonder just where Adelaide will stand – and if, as is suggested it is Coolmore Australia, just what races the resulting offspring are aimed at. It’s a well know fact Downunder that the Europeans now see Aussie buyers coming and triple the price for possible Melbourne/Caulfield Cup horses. It also says something when O’Brien can send his horse here just long enough to clear quarantine and then win one of our top races. Just hope the trainers are doing some long hard thinking about all of this. And I repeat, the two horses were champions. It is just very disappointing that our breeding industry has become an import industry, with the exception of the sprinters. Hugs KathyR

Huge congratulations to Adelaide and the best jockey in the world Ryan Moore for a very exciting win in Australia’s Cox Plate!Hugs Sheena.

What a race by, Adelaide, wow! Swinging out wide, doing his job, no whines! Just good old fashioned racing. Good boy! CONGRATS!

He’s definitely the best right now on turf. Dirt racing is another matter. Don’t think that he’s proven to be in the same league as the top US jockeys yet. Uncle Johnny, Mike, Joel, etc are the best jockeys on that surface.

October 25 Cherokee Devotional
A rainy day has such charm with its soft shadows and mist that hangs in the woods. The restful sound of rain on the roof and the way it sings in the downspout is reason to relax. The path to the woods is carpeted with yellow leaves and a few red ones washed down by the rain. Robins strut around like old-time preachers in tails. They love the rain because the ground is softer and they can feed without working so hard. On a restless day when the sun is too bright and there are too many noises, lie back and listen to a memory-listen to the a ga s gv patter on the roof and feel the peace that it brings. A good memory is as effective as the rain that caused it.
Fathers, our hearts are good…when we are at peace…we sleep easy…
