Our grandmothers told us that pretty is as pretty does. We may not have understood all they meant, but neither did we forget. Their words came back to remind us every time we erred. At one time, pretty meant clothes, how we did our hair, and how we handled our social graces. As time went along, we came to know it also meant how we carry ourselves, how we behaved in bad times as well as good. But then, maturity gave us another view that spoke of dignity, flexibility, a sense of self-respect and self-restraint. Pretty means honor and principe. It means caring about others and respecting them even when we do not agree. High values and reverence have made people more handsome, prettier, and under pressure, they are worth their salt!
I have promised the friendship of my tribe…I respect that promise. I cannot lie…

Vamp–it is so good to hear that you are home. It seems that they pump you so full of fluid in the hospital that weight gain is inevitable. Fortunately, you are losing it. All good news that no lupus is involved.
We here are all surrounding you with our love and prayers…and hugs.

Hi Zenny, Team Z and all Z’sters:
Good morning! I hope all is well with all of you! Well it’s only 20 degrees this morning and windy here in NYC. Zenny, I hope it’s a little warmer in KY.
Well, Zenny, you know everyone is wondering how Coz is doing. I am just wondering if you can tell us when you think Coz may star in his first race. I am sure it will be coming up soon. And how is your boy, Ziconic doing with his training? How does he like FL? There was one photo posted on an earlier blog of Ziconic running across the paddock. He looked like he had already won the Kentucky Derby. I bet he is FIRST in his class.
You take care Zenny.
Love,
Linda

Glad you are home vamp. Texas weather is so odd. Freezing today and on Thanksgiving we may have to turn on the AC. I hope Coz has his first race at Santa Anita because you know all Ca Zsters will try and turn out. My goal for 2015 is a trip to Breeders Cup 2015! Better have a great blueberry crop! Love to Zenny, Coz and Ziconic.

Where is everybody? I miss all the regulars – need your interesting input to lift the gloom and sad times we have all experienced lately. Sounds like Calif.Chrome is doing well. I am scared something will happen to him, but would be delighted if he does well and keeps racing. .

Good afternoon, Zen Family and kisses to my Big Girl and her family:
I’d thought to leave a proper message here today but I went off for my flu shot this morning and am now feeling pretty “ouchee” so I’ll need to come back later and say a REAL hello.
Before said flu shot, I had completed 98% of this new piece & I got the rest up before I went off to get punctured. LOL.

Dear Abigail:
Wow, I learn something new from your articles in the Vault all the time. I never knew about Big Red’s son Kingston Rule or his Mama, Rose of Kingston. Thank you for all the info and interesting articles on so many of our beloved horses. Love and Hugs, JB
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
PS:
Just got my flu shot last week too. Nasty. Always have a reaction for a couple of days. Hope you feel better. Love and Hugs, JB
Abigail_1849
Hu Judy: I’m feeling better today but still don’t have my usual energy-level back. Or is that because I’m nearing 65? LOL! Glad you liked the article. Many over here hadn’t heard of Kingston Rule whom I “discovered” in the day when I was searching far and wide for anything I could get my hands on about Terlingua. HUGS!

Fascinating stuff, Abigail!
Thanks for the great post — what talented beauties, and of course, Mr. Tesio was amazing.

Sorry to hear your flu shot made you ouchie, but you must have been feeling great before that when you wrote the article. Wow! Truly wonderful information and photos and videos – thank you so much!!! Feel better soon!!

Hi Celeste: I’m up & running today although the arm is still sore. But no swelling. I did enjoy writing this one. And it was a way to cope with my still-bereaved feelings about our Little Girl. HUGS!

I was just going to say something about Chrome. He certainly looks wonderful. In the video of his recent workout he looks powerful, moving effortlessly and clearly under a tight hold.

Without equal – Frankel
JuddmonteFarms Published on Nov 19, 2014
Frankel is the racehorse by which the greatness of all thoroughbreds will be measured.
He took racing to another level and captured the imagination like no other.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08xNVWqurC8
Special thanks to Abigail for this find!
Max
Is Frankel the measure of all thoroughbreds? What about Secretariat and Zenyatta? John Henry, Kauto Star and The Fly have more grade 1 wins to their credit.
Terry Crow
Max-Your opinion mirrors mine. I just wonder how he would have done if he had raced around a turn. Still, no denying he was/is a great one. How great? I’ll leave that to others to debate.
Max
TC. I noticed that this video appears to have been put together by Frankel’s owner. That’s his opinion. If anyone wants to see a horse take racing to another level and capture the imagination like no other, watch Secretariat’s TC races, especially the Belmont, or Zenyatta’s Breeders’ Cup races. Neither Secretariat nor Zenyatta used a rabbit to win any of their races. Same for The Danimal. It was all work done by them alone without a leader.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Max, Terry,
Funny I thought the same thing when I watched it. He’s talented, beautiful, great runner, but the best ever…….no there’s a few names I ‘d put in front of him. Like you say everything was mapped out for him. I guess the owner is entitled to his opinion…..we know better, LOL.
Max
Zenyatta has my vote. She’s The Queen.
carol in arkansas
Hi all….
Not wanting to start anything i said nothing about Frankel…..but i always questioned how good he really was. Just my opinion but the “rabbit” issue is one i found bothersome. Felt the other horse….Bullet Train?….did most of the work. Had not considered the issues of turns….but worth thinking about.
So i believe him to be very good…..great….i am not sure about.
Max
Frankel was also backed up by a very good public relations campaign. He’s a Saudi Arabian owned horse, but the Brits see him their horse. Strange.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Well, he’s British-bred and trained, and he ran mostly in the UK.
Max
LauraJ. Frankel ran only in the UK, more particularly only in England. That is not a criticism, only a comment.
Max
Most owners think that their horses belong to them, not the country in which they are racing or the trainers.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear BGG, Max, TC GP. Sheena, Sue, Carol and Z Family:
I know we all have our favorites, but I personally don’t like ranking one over the other. There are too many Champions that are just so special. There are great ones from Man O War, Citation, Whilaway, Seabiscuit, Northern Dancer, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Cigar, Affirmed, Ruffian, Wise Dan, Frankel, Rachel A and of course, our beautiful Zenyatta, to name just a few.
Secretariat and Zenyatta are to me the horses of my lifetime. Although, I love all of them from the Triple Crown winners to the low level Claimers. They give their all.
Our Queen is unique in so many ways. Her size, her sweet nature and her amazing talent as a dancer and a racer are extraordinary. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. As you know as one of her loyal fans, this is Zenyatta’s website. She inspired most of us to be here in the first place. Frankel’s peeps and others however constantly put out the idea that he is the greatest horse of all time. The video expounding that theory was posted here and naturally gave rise to comment. If that kind of theory is advanced, how could we as Zenyatta’s followers think that Frankel instead of her could be the measure of horsey greatness? In my view, no horse compares to Zenyatta and it is futile to try. We can admire all horses, as there are many truly great ones, but at the same time we just accept that Zenyatta is unique. She is the Queen of Racing. Admiring her is our prime reason d’être, maybe our only one.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
You make another point as to why Zenyatta is truly unique. Her wonderful Team making her available to us is an exceptional thing. We, as fans, are so very lucky to be able to share our love for her and her babies with each other here on the Blog. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Stallions have many offspring and never meet them, but mares care directly for their few cherished foals. They carry them to life and they teach them what it means to be a race horse. We are indeed privileged to know as much as we do about that side of Zenyatta’s life. She has proven to be a remarkable mother, but it is only to be expected from a horse who has inspired us so much, both on and off the track. Zenyatta embodies love and gives it freely to anyone who meets her or knows about her, and that is true greatness.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Yes, Zenyatta has captured our hearts, not only because of her racing record, but because of her sweet nature and personality. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Zenyatta Family, I have been off the blog for a long time, but have been here reading most of the time. So much has happened everywhere during this time, I won’t even try to comment, except I have felt everyones’ highs and lows along with all in the family. I am wondering if anyone knows what is or will be going on with Zenny as she gets ready to mate again. Will it be similar to when she was a maiden mare with the lights, etc. getting her body ready or variations of those procedures or is there no extra preparation needed? Just some things I’ve been wondering. Now will come the test…will this post?? Love to all.
sheena.davies(wales)
Frankel will always be the greatest to me but that’s my opinion!Sir Henry looked after him and managed his career well.Sheena
Abigail_1849
Sheena:
I agree. Frankel was one of the greatest, rabbit or no. I’ve been a follower of British horse racing since forever, initially because that was where our Northern Dancer made his mark as a stallion. So it makes me doubly proud to know that Frankel descends from our tiny King of the Turf here in Canada! (Maybe because I was a teacher who focused on each student’s unique gifts/talents/strengths, I’m pretty comfortable with their being “different ways” of being great. Frankel’s greatness takes nothing away from our Zenny, or Secretariat, or Phar Lap, or any of those individuals that fall into The Pantheon.)
Terry Crow
I respect the opinions of all who post here. Greatest horse of all time is a subjective subject. and the results of races can be continually debated. It takes a keen eye to say that a horse that wins in a time of 2:02 for a mile and 1/4 ran a better race than one who won in 2;01. So many factors are involved, including one which was mentioned by many posters. As has been said by many, pace makes the race.
Ann NC
Northern Dancer made his mark in the USA, too. He stood on the Eastern Shore of MD and was top stallion a few years. He lived over there in crabby land before going north.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Ann:
Love it; crabby land. Too cute. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Ann NC. Northern Dancer moved to crabby land for the mares. It was easier for him to move there than to expect the ladies to van to Oshawa. EP Taylor was close friends with the DuPonts. He also invested in Secretariat, which is why Secretariat’s last race was in Canada.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max and Z Fans:
Find these bits of info so interesting. Learn a lot on Z’s Blog. Love and Hugs, JB

JudyB. The day that Northern Dancer died, he was immediately taken home to Oshawa. Taylor wanted him to be back to rest in the land that made him.

As all of you know, I am a Zenyatta fan & a Z Dumpling.
Have the honor of being among the first posters on the Zenyatta Blog and
in the Forum. So there is no question on where my loyalty lies.
But, the Blog and the Forum have always been places where racing and
horses in the United States and internationally have be discussed and
information shared.
We have commented on Noble Mission, Cigar, Wise Dan, Mad Moose, Hurrican Fly,
California Chrome, Big Brown. Danima, Margano just in this section of the Blog.
And, of course, the beloved Hovis.
Doing this has no means diminished Zenyatta’s accomplishments or love for her-by me or by those who commented.

Her success as a broodmare is proven.

My first love was Citation!
He was the measure of horses that followed.
Then it was the great Secretariat
Ruffian was the one who broke my heart & made me lose interest
in racing for a long stretch. Followed from a distance.
Along came Zenyatta and I fell hard-remembering what it was to love
again and what greatness is!

Terry Crow
BGG-Words of wisdom, for sure. I saw Citation run at Hollywood Park when he won the Gold Cup and set an earnings record, Magnificent horse and one truly deserving of the title of champion. He is the answer to a trivia question that some folks have trouble with today because of the way horses are trained now, He ran in a race, and won it, between the Preakness and the Belmont Will probably be the last time that happens.

Peace of mind is a jewel looked for in the worst of times and in the best of times. It is the feeling we get when we turn from a busy highway to a secluded spot along a country lane. Peace is suppertime when the sunset gilds every window and a quiet contentment makes man and nature akin. It is a warm bath, a soft pillow, a shaft of sunlight that touches the spirit. All these things make a difference, the kind words, the gentleness, the sleepy midnight song of a whippoorwill. But most of all, it is hearing something we believe when it is hard to believe in anything. It is knowing that things can work out, peace does come and life is worth living. There is to hi ae se s di: There is peace on earth.
The ear of the great Master of Life, which is still open to my cry, will be penetrated with the invocation of blessing…

Dear Sheena,
I don’t feel that differences of opinion equal animosity, and there is certainly no reason for you to leave the blog in my opinion. Different people have been touched by different horses – period. Some of us haven’t been in this game long enough to know any of the former greats and only know what little we DO know because of Zenyatta and what we have learned here from everyone who posts. There is no need for consensus or for anyone to be “right.” Friends agree to disagree and move on.
Hugs

Sandy….I agree with you that differing opinions should not equal animosity….I am now sorry I posted my opinion of Frankel which I have held for a long time….it seems that an opinion not in line with the general concensus is not allowed…
as for “liking/disliking” horses based on their countries of origin or homes…some of my all time favorites are Phar Lap, Black Caviar, Kincsem, Ribot, and Eclipse.

Abigail
Max
Sheena. Comments about Frankel have really nothing to do with you.
You should try not to take these things so personally. It’s no reflection on you either that everyone does not accept the advertisement that Frankel is the measure of all horses. Differences of opinion about horses on this blog do not equate to animosity to others. You are free like Abdullah to think and say whatever you want about Frankel. By the way, Frankel looks pretty good in that video. Might attract even more mares. It’s business.
Speaking of Frankel, heard that his jockey was recently found guilty of drunk driving and has had his licence to drive suspended for about two years. He tried to argue that he was sleep driving. Judge did not buy that one. Also said that he has been upset for some time by Cecil’s death. Sad.

Thanks for asking Terry. Adjusting to life without Cotton is kind of hard. I didn’t let myself grieve for her because I couldn’t accept that she wasn’t going to come back. Brother No. 2 has a Siamese cat I swear is a hundred years old and for some reason she decided to pay me a visit yesterday. She actually let me pet her and at that moment I had to admit Cotton was gone. She had a wonderful life and was spoiled rotten. As for Frankel he is a great champion and his owners are justly proud of him. But he is no Secretariat, no Zenyatta, no Lava Man and no Cigar. As posted above Secretariat is the King of Racing and Zenyatta is the Queen.

@All–Just catching up, and it appears I missed a bit of a controversy. I would certainly hope all can express their opinions freely here. (this from one whose opinions are rarely asked–lol.)
@Sheena–don’t go. I barely have time to get to the blog, much less keep up with all the horses, both here and abroad, but we don’t want you to leave. People can just skip what they don’t have time for. Shoot, i barely have the time to keep up with the American horses. I put them in my virtual stable and then later I get e-mail notices about them and can’t remember why I added them. Must be my advanced age.–nearly 69. How can that be? You would be terribly missed.
@Vicki–where are you in TX? I would welcome a/c after the cold weather we have had lately. Sandy–no comments from you– We know you are still in misery worse than ours
Surely it will pass for you soon too, I hope.
@TC, GP–Thanks for asking about Skip. She had a hard time with her hip replacement/revision months ago, but is doing better. She just recently lost her beloved adopted horse, Jericho, and that has been sad. Our little group is re-vamping. My gosh folks, what goes? I’ve only posted a few times, but I do visit every day. Seems like more and more someone is getting their feelings hurt over, to me, trivial matters and picking up their marbles and going home, so to speak. We’re all grown-ups here so let’s not take things like differences of opinion as a personal affront. I’ve always enjoyed the posts in here, especially about Zenyatta and her family, but also enjoy news on horses in general. I hope everyone continues posting and remain on friendly terms. Life’s too short to get upset about unimportant things. Hope I haven’t hurt anyone’s feelings.

JudyB. I have not experienced much snow either only flurries but it’s a portent of things to come. Hoping that the winter in Kentucky is good for Dan and the Queen. Dan needs a mild winter and spring if he is to return to racing. They’ve removed the synthetic track at Keeneland. Working on dirt in winter is problematic. Dirt freezes.
Dan’s mints seem to be still stuck in Buffalo. No sign of moving. Don’t really know how they ended up there, but it is what it is.

Thanks Judy. Looks like things are ok now. Glad of that.
Off the subject, a friend and myself reserved an outside dining table at Del Mar for Nov. 29th to see California Chrome run in Hollywood Derby on grass. Love that horse and hope he runs, wins, and most of all, everyone finishes safely. Also, interested in seeing Lexie Lou.

Dear Karen R:
Rooting for Chromie too and I love little Lexie Lou. Have a great time at Del Mar. Love and Hugs, JB

Karen R,
Have a wonderful time at Del Mar. What a beautiful track. Enjoy the sunshine and put a little money on Chromie for me.

Karen R,
Agree. We all have our favorites and enjoy talking about them here on the blog. Of course, Zenyatta is the Queen and the reason this blog exists.
Thanks to all of you who have read and responded to my posts about Muchie during his career as a race horse. Hope he has lots of lovely ladies calling on him at Adena Springs!

shirlee-I miss MMM on the race track but glad he retired sound.

Dear Max.Thank you very much.I think you know how I value your friendship and was worried I may have offended you in some way.We all have our champions both sides of the pond and you know how I respect them all.Yes.It is indeed sad about Tom Queally to lose Frankel and Sir Henry was very hard on him.Have you heard about SDG’s injury? He’sout until the festival..Are you getting all the snow I’ve heard about on the news? The Moose is free!Sheena.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
Goodnight. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap, Herc, Frank, Boo and all the Sweeties
Max
Sheena. Cheer up. You haven’t lost anything or anyone. Life is way too short to be upset or worry. If you need a target, you should blame everything on that rat.
Heard about Sire and that he’s taking some time off until the end of the calendar year. I hope that he gets back to form. What did you think of the Fly? I loved that win. Maybe getting the old boot from Juddmonte really upset Queally too. That’s a lot to endure. Jockeys in general are under a great deal of pressure. Add such a loss as losing a mentor like Cecil and there is trouble. Cecil was complex and rare. Had a very good sense of humor.
Snow is everywhere all of a sudden. Ordered some stuff for Dan and it didn’t get here. Tracked it down to Buffalo. No chance of seeing those mints any time soon. There might be a state of emergency. The Canadians have offered to come down there from Toronto to dig the place out. Nobody can plow snow as good as them.
Max
Sheena. Forgot to mention that I was really impressed by the short guy last week. In speaking about The Fly’s win, he said that form comes and goes, but class is permanent. Agree. The Fly is definitely all class.

Good Grief!!! Haven’t we all experienced enough loss lately?? It is time to value what we have that’s good in our lives and be glad that one of those important things that we have is each other!!! Wonderful friendships have been made on this bolg and they have come about through a mutual love of Queen Zenyatta. Those friendships have grown and blossomed and grown even beyond the blog. That is a miraculous thing in itself–how wonderful that friends from as far afield as Wales and Australia can share their lives and opinions with the rest of us. We’ve all had different lives and come from different places, but,I feel that each of us is valuable to the whole and that none of us should leave a place we love because of supposed slights or differences of opinion about which horses are the greatest. ALL horses are precious and deserve our love and support. I believe that Zenyatta, should she become aware of the discord here, would be APPALLED! She is about love!!
I just lost my best friend (and one-time mother-in-law) to a stroke and complcations from several other health problems. How I wish I COULD communicate with her by a few strokes of a keypad!! What if this blog disappeared tomorrow?? All of our connections would just disappear too (except for those of us who already communicate outside the blog)–that would be horrible!!!!
PLEASE,lets all value each other, agree to disagree about some things, and just move on—together!!! I know the loss of ZPrincess has unnerved us all–I think nerves are raw and we are all trying to figure out how to navigate our grief in our own way. We must remember that she was a ray of sweetness and light in all of our lives and that the fact that she lived at all was a miracle in itself. She knew the love of the best mom’s in the world, both equine and human, she knew what it was to feel the sun on her back on a lovely spring and summer day,she knew what it was to run and play with the speed of a champion, knew that those caring for her loved her unconditionally. She had a short life, but it was a great one and she will NEVER be forgotten!! One thing we can do for her is to treasure each other. Let’s pledge ourselves to do that as we remember her. By honoring each other,we can honor HER.
We must never forget that this blog is a precious gift to all of us,and, that it is our privilege to be here. If the ZTeam ever feels that we are disrespecting it or veering out of the loving and generously given circle they have provided for us,it COULD disppear overnight, which would be a tragedy for us all!! Let’s show them how much we love this place, and each other. We know how much WE are hurting over the loss of Princess Z–just imagine how much greater heartaches THEY are suffering!! Please, let’s all think on how lucky we are to have Zenyatta and her babies in our lives , have a peaceful and blessed night and , have happy tomorrow—together!!

BRAVO SUE! Perfectly said!
So sorry for the loss of your dear friend. Thank you for your wise words which so eloquently express how so many of us feel. This blog is a blessing and God send for o many of us.
God bless you Zenyatta for bringing so many people together into great friendships and awakening the love of thoroughbred racing and aftercare to so many of us.

Dear Sue Noel:
Just Beautiful and very well said. So sorry for your loss. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Amen Sue! Thank you for taking the time to put your thoughts into these eloquent words that have already touched many Zsters. As you already know, I, too, am so sorry about your friend. Hugs, Sandy
Max
Sue. Heartfelt words. Zenyatta is about love. However, she knows what to do in every situation. On the track when she faced Frankel’s stablemate, she kicked his butt.

Sue, sorry about losing your best friend, that is not easy to recover from…
I liked what you wrote about the Blog, but I am not as worried, I think the various disagreements I see here sometimes, just seem very minor. I never expect much upset over them, but maybe I’m wrong, sometimes people feel deeply upset, and then it just takes time for them to process, and come to some calmer resolution about it. But I think that’s just normal life, and I would never expect us to lose this site simply because we are not all perfect all the time.
I would be upset if this place were not available, but I don’t believe that will happen, without some more meaningful reason than the normal give and take of our conversations.
