Happy Thursday!
A team from The Blood-Horse was recently in Kentucky filming a feature about Zenyatta that will run as a Breeders’ Cup longform at Bloodhorse.com.
The piece will tell the story of Zenyatta’s career and connections, her charisma, and the fan following she maintains to this day. The Bloodhorse team went to Lane’s End to collect video footage to include in this special online feature and visited with Ziconic as well as 14Z. Meanwhile, their photographer in New York collected images of Cozmic One in training with John Shirreffs, which will also be included in the piece.
Here you can see a few photos of the team in action. Pictured above right is Multimedia Producer Scott Tracy and Online Features Editor Claire Novak in the paddock with Z Princess. Take a look at some of the behind-the-scenes footage below.
This piece is set to run on October 27, and we’ll remind everyone when it is released. We can’t wait to see it!
You can check out another recent longform feature they did on Arlington’s Richard Duchossois and the upcoming Arlington Million here.
Enjoy!

Dear Sheena
What a beautiful photo of Glesni this morning! Her instinct to check on her chicks is greater than her instinct to begin her journey. She is such a good Mom. I do wish they could all go to Spain together!
I wanted to learn more about Northern Dancer yesterday and read so much that he really came to life for me.”The Little Horse That Inspired a Nation.” His wins were inpressive but more impressive is the legacy he has left as a sire.I went to the Northern Dancer Blog and on the front page was a gorgeous photo of your Taghrooda.Below the photo the quote reads,”The classy Taghrooda became first filly in 38 years to win the prestigious King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot yesterday. It was Telescope finishing second and Mukhadram third. All three decendants of Northern Dancer”.Then the blog went over major races this year around the world and the top three horses in each race were descendants of Northern Dancer-so impressive.I think you recommended the blog to me and it is a fantastic read for anyone interested in Northern Dancer. He was a “Little guy with a big heart, trying his best,he never gave up….he was heroic.”

Dear debbie s:
I did leave my email in a post on Page 7, but here is the recipe for the homemade Stud Muffin Treats for you and for whoever else may like to try them for their horse(s).
Mix Together:
1 cup of oats (Quick oats are fine)
1 cup shredded carrots
1/2 cup Bran flour
1/2 cup yellow corn meal
1/4 cup Flax seed
1 tsp salt
1 tsp brown sugar
2 tsp light olive or vegetable oil
Add:
3/4 cup molasses and mix well by hand.
Shape into balls and flatten out on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes, checking to make sure edges and bottoms are not burning. Treats should be a bit crunchy on the outside and chewy in the middle. Makes about 30 pieces. They can be broken in half if they are too large. Hope your horse(s) like them as much as Charlie and Hudson do. Love and Hugs, JB
vicki
Love to see Coz and Jess’ Dream but it’s very hard to tell them apart. Coz has really developed into a very handsome young horse. Well, actually , he is gorgeous.
Cotton is being very clingy which is not like her at all. I hope she isn’t sick. My beautiful Clarabelle was a black and white cat and she was born with no tail and short legs. Cotton takes after her with the short legs. Someone left Clarabelle at our house one weekend when it was raining in 1998. She was pregnant. I was sick at the time and her company was a Godsend. I had to stay in bed which was just fine with me. I had Cb until 2010.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Vicki:
Like Barb W., do not know what Cb is, but glad you are better. Hoping for the same for Cotton. Please keep us posted. Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
I think Cb is short for Clarabelle, maybe?
Cheers!
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Marshall and Barb W:
Marshall, I think you are right. I mistook vicki’s meaning. I think she was referring to Clarabelle, not to her illness. I didn’t see that until your post. Love and Hugs, JB

I did email you but perhaps I forgot to wear my glasses and it went into cyber space.
I didn’t want to bother you as so much is going on with Hudson -so waited for the recipee.Well, here it is-thank-you very much!! I will share it with my horse friends.
I hope you get good news from the vet today and pray that Hudson continues to improve and feels like herself again soon.

Dear Debbie.Glesni is certainly keeping us guessing as to when she will leave!Deri and Gwynant were certainly squawking today,he had taken her fish down to the perch by the dyfi and boy she was cross with him!
Taghrooda is running in the Yorkshire Oaks on Thursday I am really looking forward to seeing her again.Australia our Derby winner is running tomorrow,he’s had a mid-season break.Joesph has starved himself to do the weight of 8st 12lb,very difficult for a lad 6ft tall.If you remember Northern Dancer was the sire of our last Triple Crown Nijinsky. His legacy will live on.Hope you have had a lovely day with Ash and Tulliy.Love and hugs Sheena.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Z Fans:
Deb just emailed me with an update on Hudson. The vet came to the farm this AM; examined H and took x rays of both front legs. No arthritis or damage. No stone bruise, abscess or tendon issues. She does have very mild lameness (on a scale of 0 to 5) the vet said 0.5, in her left leg with a small accumulation of fluid. Vet thinks could be caused by tweaking it in the field or in the trailer last weekend, or could even be a result of racing. He did give H a cortisone injection in the left leg above the foot and expects a full recovery. She will be in the round pen for the next few days, back in the paddock on Saturday and Deb and Amanda will begin riding on Monday and training again by Wednesday. So looks like she is on her way. I’m thinking that this might be something Hudson may aggravate from time to time and Deb and Amanda will make sure she’s rested when needed. Hoping she will learn to relax and ride easier in the trailer, because with all the kicking and fussing, that’s when she might have bumped her leg. Hard to know for sure.
Thank you all for your concern and prayers. Such a relief to know it’s nothing more serious. Will be visiting her and bringing her treats while she’s in the round pen. Will tell her all of you are thinking of her. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy:
What a relief to get a good vet report: I’ve had another thought – one of the trainers here always travels one of his horses with a goat, another has a dog, that keep the horse calm while in the float (as we call it). But the best medicine will be some of those treats! Hugs KathyR
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
Thank you. I’ll relay that thought to Deb and Amanda. Some horses do become very attached to companion animals. It could help H. I did give Deb some treats to freeze and give to Hudson when they’re loading her for the show. Love and Hugs, JB

Sheena. Good luck to Australia. He might be better off with Ryan Moore. Moore, I think, is eating three square meals, albeit small ones. Heard about Sprinter being back in training. Hope things go well for him. Also for Tagi later this week. Is Toast at Del Mar?
I’m pulling for Glesni to forget a long flight to Africa. Staying with Moosie will do them both good. Moosie can say that he’s got a bird of prey in residence. Very impressive. If Glesni stays with Moosie, I wonder how she would look with chestnut feathers? Might be attractive?

Good luck to Australia running tomorrow-I can’t imagine a 6 ft.jockey! Also, look forward to Taghrooda running on Thurs. and hope she has a great race. They are both descendants of Northern Dancer and as you said his legacy lives on.The daughter of ,E.P. Taylor said about Northern Dancer: “He lives. His spirit lives. He runs in all of them.”
I will have to look up Nijinsky. This week I fell in love with Northern Dancer and Phar Lap, Bernborough’s story is another great one and so many more I want to learn about.
I giggled when I read about Deri giving her brother heck for taking her fish, only because Gwynant has been so patient always letting her eat first.I guess that is a good sign for his survival. Yesterday Deri flew straight at the camera and I think she may have perched on it.Love their sounds in my house, love your updates.Thank-you.

Big Three Clash in Rich Travers Stakes
By Steve Haskin The Blood-Horse August 19, 2014
Although, on paper, the $1.25 million Travers Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course appears to be a three-horse race among the runaway Haskell Invitational (gr. I) winner Bayern, Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Tonalist, and Twinspires.com Wood Memorial (gr. I) and Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II) winner Wicked Strong, there are several improving 3-year-olds who could be potential upsetters.

August 20 Cherokee Devotional
We have taken many paths we would not have chosen, and we have done many jobs we did not want to do. We have carried burdens we did not want to carry and dealt with impossible people we did not like. It is strange that the road we did not want to take is the one that brought us more quickly to the place we wanted to be. At times, the way was hostile, but when we needed a hand there was one. When we needed courage, it was there. What we call problems and unjust circumstances have a way of teaching us integrity and how to be peaceful. It makes us wonder how many other rewards we have missed because we resisted something that looked like too much responsibility.
I was going around the world with the clouds when God spoke to my thought and told me to…be at peace with all.

Dear Kathy. If only we could all live in peace with one another such sad news about the US journalist beheaded and the murderer has a British accent.Barbaric! Our PM Dave has had to cut short his holiday to chair a cobra meeting. These people are not human!
On a much lighter note I can access the FB videos again, saw Joey in his garden.Fubu had to visit his doc again and has lost 5ozs but doc isn’t too concerned he was getting a visit to Petco then!I heard about the flash floods in Phoenix last night on ABC and wild fires in California,Zoe had her paws crossed for everyone bless her.
There was another intruder on the nest today a Scottish male they think.Very autumnal on the Dyfi earlier,no signs of Glesni,I think she must have left now on her long journey south.I doubt they will say for definite yet!!!Marty was helping his dad with bizness last night! And enjoying his nanner plus telling jokes!Am waiting for the big race over here it’s a nice day there.Ground is good so no excuses!!Have a great day.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.

Sheena. Saw this guy’s parents on TV. Terrible loss for them and another warning for us all that our way of life and the cause of freedom is always under attack. Mercy for those who are still held captive. Let them go free.

Dear Sheena,
Yes, the news is horrifying. Thank God we have this idyllic blog to turn to, and all our friends here. So glad you can access the FB videos. Joey loves his garden. Fubu still hanging in there. I hold my breath every time he stops eating and has to go to the doctor. He has a STELLAR vet to be able to keep him going like this! Zoe is so precious. Praying for her fellow Arizonians. It’s wonderful keeping track of all the ospreys. Safe travels to all of them! Marty was so cute helping his dad. He’s quite the entertainer. Enjoy the race. Have a lovely day. Dear Max, Sheena and Z Fans:
Max, thanks for posting the replay. Wow, another impressive win by Aussie and he did it in the style of our Z. Prince of the Chestnuts! Gray Gatsby ran a great race too. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Aussie was deliberately kept at the not too distant back of the pack by young Joe to assess the pace. Otherwise Aussie would have been only too keen to move ahead. It looked like his stablemate was a pacemaker. Z was always a lot farther back and had no help from any pacemaker. She did everything herself. As you know, they often referred to her as dead last as in impossible to catch up. That was her trademark and few other horses could or can match her ability to overtake front runners who are that far ahead, hence the use of the appropriate term unbelievable in reference to her. Z remains still in a league of her own.
Free the Moose! Get the fish dinner ready if Glesni’s on her way, Moosie.

I was thinking Zenyatta, too, when I saw the race, but didn’t realize that Aussie had a pacemaker (so much to learn yet!!). Sometimes I still can’t believe that she won some of those races when I watch the DVD. Thanks for the replay video, Max, and the great photo, Ann.

Sandy. Nothing can take away from the decisiveness of Aussie’s win. However, I thought that The Grey Gatsby did really well too. He was boxed in a bit, but he ran well when he got going. He’s a very nice horse. Handsome gray, Like his coat and white socks.

Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max and Sheena:
Max. what you say is so very true. I never liked the idea of “a rabbit” as they call the horse doomed to fail in the US. Frankel could have done it all on his own too, I think.

Dear Sheena:
You don’t need to apologise for the evil this individual did: you may be aware that we have an Australian born doing the same thing in Syria, and then using his 7 year old son as a prop (I won’t say more). We all know that the decent, civilised and caring people of the USA, the United Kingdom and Australia far outweigh these barbaric individuals. Hugs KathyR
