Happy Thursday!
A team from The Blood-Horse was recently in Kentucky filming a feature about Zenyatta that will run as a Breeders’ Cup longform at Bloodhorse.com.
The piece will tell the story of Zenyatta’s career and connections, her charisma, and the fan following she maintains to this day. The Bloodhorse team went to Lane’s End to collect video footage to include in this special online feature and visited with Ziconic as well as 14Z. Meanwhile, their photographer in New York collected images of Cozmic One in training with John Shirreffs, which will also be included in the piece.
Here you can see a few photos of the team in action. Pictured above right is Multimedia Producer Scott Tracy and Online Features Editor Claire Novak in the paddock with Z Princess. Take a look at some of the behind-the-scenes footage below.
This piece is set to run on October 27, and we’ll remind everyone when it is released. We can’t wait to see it!
You can check out another recent longform feature they did on Arlington’s Richard Duchossois and the upcoming Arlington Million here.
Enjoy!

Dear Doreen:
One of Eskendereya’s fillys, Eskenformoney, that you posted about here on the Blog ran a good second today in Race 3 at Saratoga in her 2nd start, despite being bumped hard early. She was ridden by J. Castellano. Here’s the replay. Love and Hugs, JB

Sorry, I missed the race. I was at my niece’s shower. Here’s another picture of her – her humans are Starlight Racing who also had Shanghai Bobby:

Sorry, I haven’t been posting lately. My 90-year old father had a mild stroke and I also had to put another one of my cats down – diabetes/kidney issues (he was 13 years old and I had him since he was 13 months old). He was a tuxedo and was the sweetest cat I had ever owned.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Doreen, in CT,
So sorry to hear about your dear father, sending healing prayers for him. Also sorry for the loss of your kitty, it can be devastating, I’ve been thru it many times and it never gets any easier.
The picture of the filly is lovely hope she does well. hugs
Doreen in CT
Dear Sue:
Thank you for your prayers. I know my kitty is in a better place now and is no longer suffering. The filly is indeed lovely, but I’m a bit bias when it comes to the foals of Eskendereya – he of all the recent 3-year olds in the past 5 years, was the one that I thought had the brilliance it would take to win the Triple Crown. Hugs in return.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Doreen:
So sorry to hear your Dad has had a stroke. Will pray for his recovery.
Sorry, too, for the loss of your beloved kitty. Love and Hugs, JB
Doreen in CT
Dear Judy:
Thank you also for your prayers and your kind words. It was very thoughtful of you to remember how much of a fan I am of Eskenformoney and I can’t forget Isabella Sings (both are beautiful fillies whose sire just happens to be Eskendereya). I guess I’ll have to wait until Belmont to see Isabella Sings since her works are there and not at Saratoga. I’m glad that Pletcher seems to be taking his time with her even though she shown that she might have the same “brilliance” as her sire had in her maiden race. Love and hugs in return.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Doreen:
You’re so welcome and, yes, I do remember how much you love these two lovely fillies. Isabella Sings is a beautiful Chestnut. Looks a lot like her Dad. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I’m sorry about your father, Doreen, and hope he recovers with no lingering effects. RIP to your kitty. I know how that feels. Still trying to figure out how to post my video of Eskendereya.
Doreen in CT
Dear Sandy:
Thank you for your concern, well wishes, and kind words. I hope you’re able to figure out how to post the video of Esky – he’s definitely a STUD!!!!
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Doreen,
Will keep you and your father in my thoughts and prayers — hope he can make a complete recovery. Sorry that you had to bid farewell to your dear tuxedo kitty; it is always so hard to say good-bye to these treasured members of our families.
Lots of Hugs
Doreen in CT
Dear Marshall:
I appreciate your thoughts and prayers for both my dad and me. He is trying his best at the rehab center, but he also has Parkinson’s, which is making his recovery more difficult. If anyone has the right “fighting” attitude to make a full recovery, it’s my dad. He’s part of the “Greatest Generation,” and was a POW during WWII.
Thank you also for your kind words about my kitty Boots, the vet and the vet techs loved him while he was under their care during the last two weeks of his life. He would head butt them through the cage. Always giving them some “kitty love.” I was very fortunate to have him as a member of my family.
Doreen in CT
P.S. Lots and lots of return hugs.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Doreen,
That Greatest Generation fighting spirit should serve your dad well. All the very best wishes to him as he tackles rehabilitation. They really were/are the Greatest Generation! Love and Hugs

Always love the sight of our Zenny. Her little filly looks just like her and noticed how they turned to look at something they heard with the same ears pricked to hear well. It looked like a beautiful day. Isn’t it amazing how quickly her babies grow up?! Just look at Coz now. Ziconic is big and beautiful. The princess is a real jewel and very curious. Thanks as always for the news.

Dear Sheena:
Thought you might be interested: little Thurzel is by Hemingway from Julioso. But Hemingway’s dam was Welsh Love. Don’t know anything about her, and have no idea when Hemingway left Ireland to come Downunder. Assume he was with Coolmore at the time, but may be wrong. Do you know anything about him, or Welsh Love? I know he (Hemingway) is now up in Queensland at a small property, standing for $2,200. And Julioso is owned by the bloke who owned little Thurzel. Hugs KathyR
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
It’s not much, but I found this on Pedigree Query on Hemingway. There are a few notes and a photo if you click on the Icons right after his name. Will try to find more on him. If you click on Reports and then Progeny, there is a list of foals he has sired. Maybe Sheena will know more about him. Love and Hugs, JB
http://www.pedigreequery.com/hemingway
KathyR
Dear Judy:
Thanks for that: my little girl didn’t make the cut because she only placed third. From images I’ve seen of him, she’s very like her dad. Have yet to find an image of her mum, Julioso. Sheena did send me some very interesting information, especially on Hemingway’s dam-sire. Have to do the dreaded housework today so will not be going out to Jeir: feel very guilty about this, and hope she’s okay. I’m sure you know the feeling only too well! Love and hugs, KathyR
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
You’re so welcome. I tried to find info on Julioso as well, but had no luck. I will keep looking. Glad Sheena was able to find more info for you. Yes, Thurzel seems to have the same coat color and that beautiful blaze like her sire. She will be very happy to see you when you next visit.
It’s a bit different for me because I don’t own Charlie, so I have to make sure I don’t make a pest of myself. But, I do manage to see him at least once a week and sometimes more. If I had my druthers, I would visit him every day. Love and Hugs, JB

August 18 Cherokee Devotional
It takes enthusiasm to do anything. We go through so many of the same things day after day that we tend to lose our eagerness for some of it. But if we stir ourselves up, enthusiasm, like a primed pump, will flow more easily. When people lose their taste for life, it is not that there is no longer anything interesting-but they are no longer interested. They need to stir themselves up and get out of the doubting rut they have dug themselves into. The Cherokee associates the lack of enthusiasm with being sad, which he calls u hi so di. Enthusiasm has wonderful effects on the mind and body-giving them a chance to heal, to recover from unhappy experiences. When we lack enthusiasm, let us say we have it-enough to do anything we have to do.
The Great Spirit smiled upon us and made us glad…but we had to agree…

@Judy B.–prayers for HT, and thank for the report. Please keep us updated. We just found out how to make it rain in Texas. Saturday night, we bathed Money, and yesterday it just poured buckets. Sigh—the magic formula–better than washing the car.

Dear Kathy.Happy national friendship week!We should celebrate here on the blog!Lovely words on Zoe’s cover photo.I saw your message to her such a shame there are so many videos I can’t access now since they changed the settings.I did get Ray’s video of him eating the grass,he looked extra fluffy!and his bruddahs love their tubby. It’s very windy on the Dyfi today,Glesni still there so far no one in the nest at the moment.Fubu had quite a good day yesterday still eating his kitty gravy and playing with momma, have’nt checked him yet.I’m sure your own furbabies are great company while Steve is away. It’s Monday again not Mary’s favourite day as if anyone could suggest he does’nt write his own posts!!! Look how Hovis writes his own diary and I’ve lost count of the ipads Kauto has smashed with his “clumsy hooves”.Have a great day.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.

Dear Sheena,
Happy Friendship Week to my only friend in Wales! Love my Zoe. She is such a sweet little girl. And her mom is so conscientious taking her on all her therapy visits. Had to laugh at Ray. He doesn’t eat the grass, just pulls it out! Saw that Monty and Glesni broke the record for the number of fish caught. Congrats to them! Very glad Fubu is doing better these days. Yes, my three are indeed great company while Steve is gone. Holly is in my lap while I write this to you. Marty was hilarious showing us how to hide today and to not come out unless someone is calling us. Good advice! Of course Marty writes his own posts as the picture proves. Yes, Hovis and Kauto…and we could never forget our Zenny’s diary for all those months. Have a marvelous day even if it IS Monday. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

Barbara-another good way to make it rain in Texas-let your dryer go out and hang a load of wash on the clothesline. Plus it’s great to have a little Jackie help you with the laundry. Those teeth marks on the towels are sooo cute. He needed a change from his garbage hobby.
Love seeing Zenyatta and Z Princess. Such a good start to another very hot day.

Vicki–we would be in big trouble if that happened. We don’t even have a clothesline.

August 19 Cherokee Devotional
To live peacefully with other people, we need insight and careful judgment. We judge by appearances far too often and that leads to misunderstanding. So much is hidden from ordinary view that it takes time to know something well enough to say anything at all. We have to know that because we have light does not mean there is no darkness. And because we have food does not mean there is no hunger. Can our eyes see all the reasons and purposes in the actions of other people? Unless we have known someone’s pain and carried his burden, we cannot know how we might react in the same circumstances. Our senses cannot tell us everything. Only compassion and understanding show us the truth.
O Great Spirit, help me never judge another until I have walked two weeks in his mocassins.

Dear Sheena,
So glad the Devotion “spoke” to you. Looks like Glesni is trying hard to ease the chicks into their independence little by little. Such a good mom! It’s gratifying that Fubu is doing okay and has so many friends. You can always count on Marty to make you laugh. Saw his comment this morning that a yogie bar is worth double the amount of a gold bar. that’s pretty valuable! Boo and Buddy as adorable as ever. No wonder they’re well on their way to 16M friends! It was sad to see so many missing dogs on Zoe’s page. Praying they’re reunited with their “parents!” I’ll have to take a closer look at little Mango. Diane certainly has a good heart! Loved the story about the pitbull saving the kitty. Have a wonderful day. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.
