Happy Saturday!
Scroll down for photos from our most recent trip to Lanes’s End.
Zenyatta and her War Front filly spend their summer days grazing and playing with paddock-mates. When the flys are particularly pesky, Z Princess will stay close to her mom’s tail for extra protection.
Zinconic was showing off for us in the paddock (we think he’s excited to be in training prep). Our next blog post will cover his new routine.
Enjoy!

thanks to Team Z for all the photo updates! It’s a thrill to see the “kids” growing up!
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Kathy.Joyeux Quatorze Juillet! That’s about the limit of my French!!It’s a dull day in Wales but weather permitting the chicks will be ringed tomorrow!Yay!Glesni was busy tidying up and the”bobs” were annoyed with mum!Sad to hear Zoe’s news about Mr Connie she must have brought him great happiness in his later years,I wonder if she understands the importance of her job.Just been voting for Fubu he’s still only managing kitty gravy.Marty, as usual, hates Mondays, loved him looking for his piece of cheese.James and Bob had a good day out at a summer fete yesterday for cats protection Bob loves all the fuss and attention.Did you see the lovely piece about the rainbow bridge and the horse on Zoe?Off to visit the rest now.Have a great Monday.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Vous parlez francais tres bien! That’s a very exciting landmark for the chicks. It was sad, indeed to read of Zoe’s loss of Mr. Connie. She brought a lot of joy to him and I’m sure even now she is a comfort to Mr. Connie’s wife. I’m still very diligent about voting for Fubu. Sure wish he would start eating more than just the gravy. Poor little guy is in a losing battle. So sad. Marty always entertains. Will have to check on James and Bob. Yes, I saw the Rainbow Bridge and the horse. A real tear-jerker! Have a wonderful day and week. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

Hi everyone.
I just published Part Two of “Thoroughbreds from Down Under.” So interesting doing this research and it only makes me appreciate thoroughbreds even more!
http://thevaulthorseracing.wordpress.com/2014/07/14/the-thoroughbred-down-under-champions-1856-1939-part-two/
Marshall (NC Broad)
Thanks, Abigail!
Love reading your Vault articles. The “Thoroughbreds from Down Under” is so interesting, and I am learning of wonderful horses/legends that I didn’t know about.
Look forward to the next installment! Hugs
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Abigail:
Just finished reading Part 2 of the History of Racing in Australia and New Zealand. Wow, Peter Pan and Ajax were gorgeous Chestnuts. Learning so much from the vault. Thank you. Love and Hugs, JB
Abigail_1849
Thank you Marshall & Judy!
I must say that doing this research has been quite the eye-opener for me, too. I just had no idea that AUS-NZ was so replete with pretty amazing thoroughbreds because Australasia remains somewhat of a mystery to me. I need some really good books on AUS + NZ for my library but it’s so hard to know who’s work is worth buying when you don’t really have more than a couple of contacts “down under” and both of these ladies are really too busy to send along recommendations.
Clearly, though, individuals like Black Caviar and So You Think are the proverbial “tip of the iceberg.”
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Abigail:
Yes, so much wonderful history and splendid horses I did not know of until your piece. I did know of Phar Lap, but not most of the others. Didn’t know anything about New Zealand horses. Thank you for all your informative and hard work in make this info available to us. Love and Hugs, JB

Z sure does have the most beautiful babies, but of course she does!!! :-) Awesome pictures…thanks for sharing them!

Hope our Nancy NJ is going?

Dear Ann:
Looks like The Haskell may include Medal Count, Bayern, Wildcat Red, Albano and Irish You Well too. Talented group. Love and Hugs, JB
shirleeinindy
Judy, Saw on Bloodhorse. com this morning that Untapable is going in the Haskell. I have mixed feelings about this. At least Rosie is back on board.
Ann NC
That’ OK Shirlee.
JB and Shirlee, my only concern, I hope Untapable goes easy on those boys!
She is an outstanding girl, has been in good hands, who know her well. Now to get poor Ria the same.
Hugs.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Ann and Shirlee
Too funny. All I can say to Untapable is, “Run Like A Girl”! I am concerned about Ria Antonia too. Hoping her connections do what’s best for her. Love and Hugs, JB

Sorry Ann, did not see your post.

Jan, what a beautiful way of expressing what this site means to all of us.

The very same day of my last post I went straight home and Cotton was in the midst of a major hissy fit. She had something trapped in the middle of the wisteria. A puppy! A black lab male puppy. Now what am I to do? I have called in a lost dog to our local radio station. It’s sad to say but people around here all always dumping unwanted animals on our road. It’s a rural route. I am torn. I don’t want to want another dog this soon. Is it meant to be? Dogs aside that dratted Johnny V. Just as I turned on TVG I thought I heard them say JV was riding a horse for Our John. Finally a chance to root for JV. Where did he finish? The back of the pack. Dratted Johnny V.
Max
Vicki. Sounds like fate to me. Cotton must know something. Maybe it is time to welcome a new member of the family?
Ann NC
Yes!
Marshall (NC Broad)
Vicki,
I agree with Max — it does sound like fate to me, too. Kismet?
I don’t think you should fret about it being too soon — I think this little Lab puppy could very well be “heaven-sent”. These things happen on their own schedule. Maybe Cotton does know something, indeed. This perhaps is a sign that it is time.
Lots of Hugs
shirleeinindy
Vicki, That dratted Johnny V does it to me all the time. When he is riding against one of my favs. he wins. When he rides one of them, he loses. I think he likes to spoil my fun.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Shirlee:
Always the way, isn’t it. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. For some reason, Uncle Johnny has recently been going through a bit of a dry spell. His luck will turn. If not, Dan should insist on riding with Jose.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I’ve noticed that lately, but he’ll turn it around at Saratoga. Got to watch him on MSW long shots. Love that track. So many splendid horses. Love and Hugs, JB
Morgan Morris
Either Zi is turning Flaxen with small rabicano spots on his flank. Orrrr hes slowly but surely greying out. Still a gorgeous Colt and so happy his neck has stayed thick. Coz’s neck and narrow build isnt to much to my taste. Life Is Sweet’s colt is sure greying out QUICK! Princess Z is adorable as always, starting to darken, and MAN look at the muscle on her! Total bulk! Id say shes gonna be bulkier then her two brothers.
lauraj_cincinnati
Zi is not graying. He’s chestnut and will stay that way. I think the “roaning” is just an artifact of lighting. It’s not apparent in all his pictures.
Lynne From Surrey, BC., Canada

Thanks for the marvelous pictures of Z Princess and Ziconic. They are both such
handsome offspring. Zenyatta is looking as content and beautiful as ever.

Dear all–just got word from Old Friends that Prized, age 28, had to be euthanized yesterday, due to the infirmities of old age. He was the damsire of Paddy O’Prado and Untapable. RIP.
I wanted to post the link, but no luck. I see others posting all the time, and I used to be able to. So sorry. The Old Friends website is http://www.oldfriendsequine.org, and you can find it there.

Thank God for Old Friends.

How tall is that young filly? And Zionic – what a gorgeous horse! He is large, too? Z throws huge babies!
Love the look on his face with the little saddle on his back. Like what the heck is all this about?
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.I thoroughly enjoyed the video of the Irish National Stud,I get a newsletter from them sometimes and particularly like the Japanese gardens.I remember they were desperate to get STS back there but, of course, because of John Oxx’s association with the Aga Khan he ended up at his stud.Yes,I heard about Simenon he never seems to take a break.Al Kazeem is due back on Saturday at Newbury and he’s in the betting for the Juddmonte Noble Mission is entered as well.
One of Richard Hannon’s winners tested positive for beta-blockers after a race back in april a filly called Furigha. They deny everything say she might have been “got at” in the racecourse stables but it seems they had a similar “problem” in 2012!Who can you trust??They are renaming the Galtres Stakes at York in honour of Sir Henry. The Moose must be free!!PU Dan and all sick horses everywhere.Niss4PM=^..^=Sheena.
Max
Sheena. I read about Al. The race is not up to his usual standard, but he’s been off for a long time and needs to get back into the racing routine. He’s a very nice horse, and he’s Welsh so that we have to give him some extra attention.
Don’t know what to say about the drug allegations. I recall that Mullins was worried about people sabotaging his horses before Cheltenham. Maybe have to give Hannons the benefit of the doubt, innocent until proven guilty. Trust only horses. But I’m not sure about Moose.
Here is a treat for you. Heard about this today. The Guards at Buckingham Palace were speaking French today, but not for Bastille Day. The Royal 22e Régiment aka the Van Doos from Canada were given the honor of changing the guard for The Queen. She is their Colonel in Chief. They might be the only non British regiment to guard The Queen at Buckingham Palace. They’re heading to St. James’ Palace and the Tower later this week.

Free the Moose. Give the Moose a pass to get out. Mercy for the Moose!

Loved seeing this Max. Reminded me of going to see and hear a performance of The Scots Guards or the Black Watch with my father.

Dear Max:
Thanks so much for sharing this video. Love the the pomp and tradition. Great precision. Power Up CC, Dan, ROC, CDA, Treve, Sir, Reilly and all who are ill or injured. Beast, listen to Max. TT, love you forever. Loose The Moose! Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. The Royal 22nd is stationed in Quebec City. Although they are a fighting regiment, they also guard the Citadel which is the home of The Queen in Canada. She also has a home in Ottawa at Rideau Hall. Not sure but I think that the RCMP guards that one.

Dear Max.Thanks for the video. There was a good crowd watching them.So many traditions in the UK.Lots of changes in the cabinet tonight, William Hague has resigned and is leaving politics after the next election.Dave is falling to pressure and bringing more women into government. And we are going to have women bishops!Nissy for PM of Canada next! The Moose must be given his freedom!PU Dan and all sick horses everywhere.Sheena
Max
Sheena. I was impressed by that weather. Very nice. I heard about the bishop decision. Cannot think of any reason why women should not be bishops if they can be priests. Next you will have a female Archbishop of Canterbury. Same for Nissy, the thinking peeps’ cat. Hope that he gets his reward. Vote often.
Free the Moose. Danny, keep galloping. Beast, eyes on you. Reilly and Sir, good wishes to you both. Get well all sick horses. Al, do your best. Tasty, you know what to do. Looking out for news of your baby. Never forgotten.

It’s so true – Dermot Weld bringing the horse Downunder was the beginning of the internationals coming down for the Melbourne Cup, he will be remembered fondly. So pleased you put up that post – must have been a message from somewhere given he was being treated for colic at that time. Hugs, KathyR
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
Very nice tribute to Vintage Crop by his rider. That dratted colic takes another beauty. RIP. Love and Hugs, JB

So sad to hear of this boy’s passing, but fabulous to hear from Mick K. (one of my absolute fave jockeys) and to see social media alive with appreciation for Vintage Crop.
Max
KathyR. It is nice to read these heartfelt comments about a truly great horse. He will be missed at the National Stud. Visitors loved him.

Dear Barbara
Thanks for posting the link about Prized. I am so glad I had the opportunity to learn about him and his racing days, his legacy and his last days coming up for carrots and visiting his fans at .Old Friends. He was a special horse as they all are, may he rest in peace..I am so happy that Prized had a place like Old Friends to live out his days with dignity, purpose and love.
Dear Abigail
What a gift-let us know what you decide with the puppy that chose you. (.Sometimes our old dogs also have a hand in these surprises.)

Dear Sheena:
Speaking of Dermot Weld: Do you know where Profound Beauty is? Had heard she was to be retired to be a mum, but don’t know if she’s had a foal or not. She was a beautiful visitor to the Spring Racing Carnival. Hugs, KathyR

Belle Couture (Black Caviar’s half-sister) to be retired to stud. The $2.6 million yearling had just four starts, won a maiden at Caulfield on Easter Monday before suffering injury, which led to the decision to retire her.

Dear Kathy R:
Happy, healthy retirement to Belle. Love and Hugs, JB

Black Caviar update.
According to a piece in Sportsman, Neil Werrett said the connections have engaged breeding experts to assist them with their decision on Nelly’s next mating; Neil said it would again be a choice of Australia’s top stallions. He said the same ones as last year will be in the mix – More Than Ready, go back to Exceed and Excel, go to Snitzel, High Chaparral, and, mysteriously, one other.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
Thank you for your updates on BC and the horses Downunder and your interesting posts. It’s wonderful to have a direct friendship with a Z’ster in Australia. Love and Hugs, JB

July 15 Cherokee Devotional
A shallow river that is not deep enough to hold all the water that runs into it during the rainy season is always in danger of pushing our of its banks. When it overflows, everything is in danger. Those who live near such a river know they must be prepared. They have seen havoc wreaked on everything in its way. But they have the same feeling about people who are so like the river. Such people have no control and no depths, and tend to push into the lives of other persons. Many of the walls we build are to protect us from intrusion. The Cherokees remember that need for a li s de lv to di, safety or protection, and will not again be caught in the floodtide.
No man of my race has ever stood there before. The flood rises, looking upward I see a steep, stony path. I lead the way up…
