California Preparing Riding Crop Rule Change
By Frank Angst The Blood-Horse September 3, 2014
A rule that would limit use of the riding crop by jockeys during races is expected to be put in place at the upcoming 24-day Santa Anita Park autumn meet to begin Sept. 26.
Jockeys’ Guild regional manager Darrell Haire said industry leaders and regulators in California have been working since May to put in place a new rule on use of the riding crop by jockeys during races. He said the new rule would limit jockeys to hitting the horse a maximum of three times before taking time off to see how the horse reacts.

Dear BGG:
Thank you for this. A step in the right direction. Love and Hugs, JB

BGG,
As always thanks for the news on this use of the whip. I would be all for doing away with the whip, period. Gary Stevens said of Muchie and the whip that he learned not to use it as the horse was going full out and doing all he could without it. And they won the BC Classic. I don’t blame the jocks as they work for the owners and trainers and if it is felt they didn’t do all they could to win, they are in trouble. Perhaps they should line up the trainers and owners and give them as many licks as the horse got?????

Dear Shirlee:
Amen! Love and Hugs, JB
Max
shirlee. Very good ideas.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Judy.I’ve posted your goodnight and a link to sparkle’s FB on the new blog.Gosh,an emu reminds me of Rod Hull over here in the UK.Charlie is one smart horse!I’m sure you loved grooming him.As you may have seen we think Deri started her migration this morning, will know for definite tomorrow.Love and hugs.Sheena.Loved the pics!!!
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
Yes, I left a reply to your post on the new Blog. Not familiar with Rod Hull. Will have to look him up. Charlie is so funny. Godspeed to Deri; will ask St. Francis to guide them and keep them safe. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Don’t know too much about that guy except I think that the emu was a hand puppet. Very strange too about his death. He may have fallen off the roof of his house? Not certain why he was on it.
Free the Moose! Free all moose everywhere. Goodnight to the Beast and the Snake. Danny, may be time for you to get some sack time too.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Looked Rod Hull up on Google and watched some video of him and Emu. Very funny. He did, in fact, fall off the roof of his house while trying to adjust the TV antenna to get a better reception for a Football (Soccer) game according to Wiki. Sad. Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Judy B.,
Thanks for the update and pictures. Charlie is such a brilliant boy! So glad that you got to groom him, too — what fun! Love seeing Frank and Jerry — it’s not just an everyday, ho-hum place that has emu and zebra connections!
Lots of Hugs and Love
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Marshall:
Charlie is a real character. Always makes my day. I know, Angela’s farm is quite special, just like her.
I loved your comments on Joan Rivers and Robin Williams; especially, “what a show has opened in heaven”! Totally agree. Love and Hugs to You and Reilly, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Not sure where to post – figured that the new Blog entry was for shopping so I am here until I know different. Cheers!
Joan Rivers was definitely one of a kind! I first saw her back in the ’70’s on The Tonight Show. She could really crack Johnny up. She was quite a lady, funny and very smart with a tremendous work ethic. She had survived so many tough times that I thought she might make it through this, but alas, she has left us. This sad old world has taken another big hit at a time when it can use all the laughter it can get. Robin Williams, and now Joan Rivers — Ah, what a show has opened in heaven!
Condolences to Melissa, Cooper, all her family and friends.
RIP dear Joan Rivers
Ann NC
Very nice, Marshall.
RIP, Joan Rivers.

Dear Judy,Sheena,Max,Peggy,Kathy R and Z family
Judy, great photos of Charlie and can’t believe you have an emu!.They can run very fast!!!!Loved the photo of Angela and Jerry, they never forget.Beautiful stripes.
I am so happy Charlie and you had time together and you had fun grooming him.
Peggy, will see the Horse Whisperer for sure, thanks for the recommendation.
I saw Little Ash today and he was out in the front paddock rolling and rolling then got up easily-yah- and ran and galloped and kicked his back hooves in the air-waaaay up in the air!! I was in the paddock and just laughed, keeping to the side and felt safe..What power the little guy still has. Then we went back to his stall and he enjoyed a groom.Lots of dirt flying after his mighty rolls.Forgot my stud muffins, boo hiss, had carrots but will bring the best goodies next time..Had a great day with my cousins, nice dinner at home and a bedtime walk with Tully.Off to see Dad tomorrow.
Little Deri is gone methinks. She was so feisty in the early am yesterday, calling loudly, kicking crows out of the nest, and pruning her beautiful feathers before her flight.
Godspeed big girl, (was trying to do a reverse tiny)- but she truly is a big bird- and beautiful!!!.It will be far too quiet on the Dyfi and in my house without you.
Goodnight,sweet dreams,love and hugs,Debbie
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear debbie s:
So glad you enjoyed the photos. I know, I think Angela is in for an adventure with Frank.
Oh, would have loved to see Ash doing his rolls and then running and kicking up his hooves in his paddock. Such a spirit of freedom and joy they convey when they are running free. What wonderful beings they are.
Don’t know if you have ever seen this video of Zenyatta when she was turned out for the first time at Lane’s End in the December of 2010. I watch this whenever I need a lift in spirit. (Listen for the Whinnying). Love and Hugs, JB

Max
JudyB. Are you saying that Frank might do some biting and kicking? Cannot believe it. Can tiny birds really do that? Wild and free, emus rule.
Free the Moose. 57 days, Beast. Snake you’re in training for the next big one. Listen to Tony, or at least don’t bite him. Too often. Champ, enjoy dunking.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Let’s just say I hope Angela did not “bite” off more than she can chew! Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. I’d love to know Frank’s back story and why he needed a home. It cannot be because Frank was in any way, maybe difficult? My money however is on Angela, protector of zebras. Next to giraffes, they are my favorite African animals, although dearly love a nice black leopard.
Free the Moose. Muffins for the Moose. Beast, Snake and Danny, better be dreaming of your next wins.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I don’t know Frank’s complete story. Angela did tell me that Frank was being picked on by the other Emus in his group and his owner was looking for a new home for him. I asked her where she was going to house Frank and she said with the Mini’s. I don’t know how they will feel about that. Especially, Magnum, who is a little Gray Grump. Hoping for the best. I did do some research on Emus; their behavior and characteristics. Sent the info to Angela. We shall see.
I do think she might have a problem getting Frank to move where she wants him to be without a halter and lead rope. I will do my best to get a video of the process. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Frank might be far better off with the minis away from emu bullies. He might start identifying with them and begin to act like a horse. Hope that they accept him. Agree that he needs some sort of control device unless he comes when called. Could be if Angela offers some emu goodies. Will wait for news.
Free the Moose. Get well Beast. Snake and Danny, keep training. Take some snooze time too. Hope that you are getting treats.
debbie s.
Dear Marshall,I loved your comment about “What a show has opened in heaven” too.
RIP Joan Rivers and Robin Williams.
Max
Hovis has outdone himself. What a horse!
Happy weekend to all, especially Z, her kids, the Moose, the Beast, the Snake and the champ Danny Boy.

The video is nothing short of hysterical so click on the link in the blog and give it a try. Don’t know for sure if it will work if you’re not on Facebook, but it’s worth a shot. Thanks, as always, to Sheena via Max for our Friday treat.t

Dear Sandy:
Hovis and his Mum are so funny. Love the video. Love and Hugs, JB
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Hysterical; thank you for sharing the link. Love this week’s photo and the video. What a handsome boy is our Hovis. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Brave too. Ice water has no effect on the Hovis, but he is a professional after all. Notice that they did not dare to touch his manly head.
Free the Moose! Beast, 57 days. Snake, be a good boy. Keep the bites to a minimum. The champ, you’re the best.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
They know better than to mess with the Manly Man Hovis! Power Up CC, Danny, CDA, ROC, Beholder, Lea, Sir, Treve, PM, ROC and all who are ill or injured. Beast and Snake, mind Max. TT, love you forever. St. Francis please protect all our beloved horses and at this time, especially, Street Cry. Loose The Moose! Love and Hugs, JB
Ann NC
“Tiny” thanks, Max! Hovis those feathers, wow.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Max,
Thanks for the Hovis diary! He really does stay quite busy, doesn’t he? Always enjoy the weekly reports.
Have a lovely weekend! Hugs
shirleeinindy
Loved the video. Of course, quite shocked at Hovis’ girly voice. Guess that come from being gelded! Nothing like a good laugh on a hot muggy Friday.
Max
shirlee. That is actually the voice of a female translator. Hovis is speaking in his own language and she is translating from the original horse.
Free the Moose! Beast and Snake, you’re on my radar. Champ Danny, think of ways to show Uncle Johnny just who is in charge.
Lisag in Texas
Z-Ziva, ZPrincess, You are most definately your Mama’s Daughter. Angels surround you all your live, Aunt Lisag loves you darlin’, Love, Lisag
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.I seem to be posting on 2 blogs!!The video was hilarious but I was surprised Hovis hadn’t nominated his mum for the next challenge giving him a girly voice!!He’s a manly horse!Do you remember Moosie’s Irish brogue on his video!Talking of Moose I hope Nigel gives him enough pocket money to keep Deri in fish suppers for the winter and that also he has a big stable to house her.
Christophe has told Demuro not to give STM a hard race on sunday at Baden-Baden.He will be back riding him in the Arc most probably.Richard Hughes is catching up with Ryan in the Jockey’s championship.Free the Moose PU Beast!Sheena.
Max
Sheena. That cannot be Hovis’ voice. He’s manly. Think it’s a translator.
The Moose will have to go back to winning races to pay for her room and board. I hope that there is a well stocked grocery store nearby.
Disappointed to see that those Germans intend to use a pacemaker with Sea The Moon. There is no way that LoPresti would ever use a pacemaker with the champ. The champ is only barely under control as it is. Every horse in a race is his rival to be conquered not to be followed. Dan also lays down the law to Uncle Johnny.
Free the Moose! Beast and Snake, time for lights out. Danny, you’re the man.
shirleeinindy
I am getting very depressed about my favorite horses. Just read on Bloodhorse.com that Palace Malice is injured and being retired. Lea is sick and Muchie has retired. What’s a girl to do? Perhaps the owners and trainers would send me money if I agreed to not like their horses.
Max
shirlee. The Snake is accepting fans.
Ann NC
A member of, Tony’s Tiny Traveling Troupe.

No wait, is Chad, Snake’s trainer? This heat has my brain fried.
Max
Ann NC. It’s confusing with these guys. Tony was the Snake’s trainer, and the Snake may still send him some love bites for ole times’ sake. Heard that Tony always follows horses whom he has trained. Dearly loved Havre de Grace even when she went elsewhere for training. Now Chad Brown wrangles the Snake. Abel Castelano rides. He’s Javier’s bro. Javier is with the Beast. Need cue cards to keep it all straight.

Dear Ann:
I think it’s my influence (heat fried brain); it’s contagious. Love and Hugs, JB

If technology had not brought me so many wonderful friends, I would hate it totally! Am I the only one who couldn’t get the Hovis video?? I sent it to our daughter at work, and she got it just fine. it said I needed to update my FlashPlayer. That’s been done. Aaugh!!!! I have ‘liked” on FB, tried getting it from the internet directly. Just don’t get it. Visited the FB page, hoping it would recognize me, to no avail.
Happy weekend to all.

Thank you for posting these wonderful picture of Z14. She is SO pretty.
Mary McCrea
What a beautiful young filly; makes her “mommas'” proud! Thank you!
Susan
ZPrincess was so beautiful. I was shocked to read of her death today. I called her Easter Filly, from the headline the day of her birth. My condolences go out to all the connections and especially her mom, the Queen.:(
