Here this morning reflecting on the career of Tom Durkin.
What a race caller he was and I am happy to say I heard so many of them.
All the memories and I cannot truthfully pick one that I would say is my favorite.
I do have a top 3 which would be where Rags to Riches wins the Belmont, Rachel
A’s Woodward and last but not least Tiznow’s BC win in 2001.
The wordsmith of race calling has left a void that may never be filled. Enjoy your retirement Mr. Durkin, you so deserve it, for all you gave to the race fans.

Princess Z is so beautiful!!!!! Thank you for sharing her pictures with all the Z fans!!! Team Z is the BEST!!!!!!

Unfortunate news – The Big Beast has an ankle chip in his left front ankle and will be sidelined for 60 days. :( Hope he has a fast and complete recovery and we’ll see him most likely at Gulfstream next year. :)

Yes, Doreen, Power Up BB!!
Hoping for an easy procedure and quick, complete recovery for the Beast.
Big Hugs
Max
He left Saratoga today. They are going to use a local on him and he’ll be standing during the procedure. The Beast can use the time off to concentrate on growing. He’s a tiny horse.
Free the Moose! Beast, will be thinking of you.
shirleeinindy
Max, So sorry to hear about The Beast’s ankle chip. Thank goodness it was not more serious and he seems to have caring owners and trainer. I agree the little thing looks kinda skinny and small and could use the time off to eat and get bigger!
pamhomeier
Poor, skinny little thing. Time off to get some meat on his bones….
Abigail_1849
Max: That’s a complete drag. But at least he can spend his time becoming even more beastie-like!
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Doreen:
Oh, sorry to hear of The Beast’s ankle chip. Wishing him all the best and a complete recovery. We will miss seeing you race in the BC beautiful, big boy. Concentrate on getting well. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Debbie. It’s been a pleasure to share the osprey family with you, they have been a part of my spring/summer for 4 seasons now.it’s such a bittersweet time of year. The dyfi always hope to have chicks migrate successfully but when you think of them all alone on that perilous journey….Deri had become very territorial these last days maybe Gwynant thought it was time to depart. She was busy eating when I looked in earlier.Roy Dennis was instrumental in re-introducing them back in the UK and now he’s taking some young Scottish birds to the Basque region of Spain so they can set up home there.the people there watch them migrating over the area during spring and autumn and now they will have their own.I have been in tears watching the tributes for joey on his FB today he really was a special and much-loved cat.Hope you are having a lovely holiday weekend.Love and hugs Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Your Andy Murray just moved on to the next round in the US Open. Great job.
Free the Moose! Beast, cooperate with the medics. No getting loose.
sheena.davies(wales)
PU the Beast !Max will be upset.Wishing the Beast a speedy recovery.Hugs Sheena.
Max
Sheena. I’m actually not too overly upset. My Beast will prevail because he is a special beast and will return even better and bigger. I will closely follow his convalescence. I will also have to pay more attention now to the Snake.
Free the Moose! Beast, don’t bite the doctors until after the surgery. Make certain that you eat up well. You’re a growing horse.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Beast is still growing and he’ll come back bigger and better than ever. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. This type of arthroscopic procedure is supposed to be fairly non invasive, two incisions if all goes well. The Beast just needs to rest that ankle after and give himself time to heal. I guess that getting loose and running free on the range will be banned. I feel sorry for Tony’s pony. He was enjoying those trips to the winner’s circle.
Free the Moose! Get well, Beast. Snake, sack time.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Wishing our big, beautiful boy well. Yes, bet the pony will miss Beastie. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max.That’s great news about Andy! The Big Beast reminds me of Deri they need to grow a bit more!!Gwyn must be settling in with Moosie now.I hope he’s ordered plenty of fish!Peddlars Cross who was 2nd to the Great Hurricane Fly in 2011 has been retired. He never really recovered from that race and fell out of love with racing.glad to see him retiring in good health.trained by Donald McCain jnr.Free the Moose!Niss4Senate.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Hope that you get to see Murray play. Very good. I’ve noticed that peeps like Andy who wear the most white or near white on their outfits are winning in the US Open.
The short guy was interviewed on one of the Irish media outlets. Said that the Fly would come back. Also mentioned that Kauto was also written off many times in his illustrious career and he returned. Read also that most of the jumpers are back in training, such as Sprinter Sacre. Haven’t heard anything about The New One. Maybe Glesni has his stall?
Moosie tweeted that he’s banned until November 10. No flat racing this year for him. Says that he’s getting into shape. No mention yet of his company at the farm.
Free the Moose! Beast, get some rest before the procedure. Snake, you’re on my radar.

Stonestreet has a fantastic new colt who is 3 and has just started racing. His name is Atreides (shades of Dune) out of Medaglia d’Oro. Won a race Saturday by 17-1/2 lengths. Half brother to Dreaming of Julia and by the same sire as Rachel. You can find the article about him on Bloodhorse.com. Sorry I am too computer dumb to post it here for you.

I posted Atreides race above Shirleeindy. (On this page) So impressive!

carol. The Aussie papers say that the supposed due date is September 11. Everything surrounding Black Caviar in contrast to Zenyatta is now treated as a big secret. No one knows for certain even where she is living. It’s referred to as an unknown location in New South Wales. KathyR told us that BC would likely disappear as a broodmare, although the owners may announce the birth.
Free the Moose. Beast, be good for the docs. Snake, keep training.
debbie s.
That’s three posts excited about Areides from Stonestreet, like to see them start at 3..
I know-,so much for the Triple Crown- but he is so ready and what a great start.
I agree with Rose,Danny you are amazing, big wishes for you to stay healthy and retire sound in the not too distant future. You are in a class all your own.
Dear Judy
Took stud muffins down to Ash and shared them with his barn mates after I took him out. As I was leaving all the heads were looking down the aisle hoping for more.Just one for pals and two for Ash -I need to be discreet otherwise I will need to open a stud muffin bakery .Good fun today- a young horse was nervous and came along with us and Ash calmed he right down.Goodnight, sweet dreams,Debbie
Max
Cannot agree with the comments that Danny should retire soon. This horse is an extraordinary athlete, a true gift from God, who should be allowed to do what he knows how to do best for as long as possible. Morton Fink says that Dan will race on as long as Dan is healthy and is able to carry on at the highest level. That last race when he was returning from a life threatening ailment which has killed most horses, when he was carrying more weight than any other horse in the race and when he barely missed setting a course record tells the tale. Wise Dan is in his prime. When we see Dan run, we see a horse who is truly great in every sense of the word. We are all lucky to be alive to witness this kind of pure beauty. Dan was born to run. Let him run.
Free the Moose and look after The Beast. Snake, you know how I feel about you too.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear debbie s:
I do the same thing with Charlie and Hudson. Go down the stalls with a muffin for everyone and then give the rest to Charlie and Hudson. Spoil them something awful.
Ash is a good boy and a great role model. Love and Hugs, JB

Black Caviar set to become a mum (VIDEO)

Dear BGG:
Thank you so much for this video and update on Black Caviar. I didn’t realize her due date was coming up so soon. Very happy for her and to know that her owners are going to keep the foal. Wishing you safe foaling BC and a healthy foal. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
BGG. Thanks for the video. Not certain why there is so much secrecy about this. Is it security? KathyR might know. They’ve got some good looking grass in NSW. BC looks smaller in the video than I thought that she was. I guess that I’m used to tiny horses like Thurzel and the Beast.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Too funny. Love and Hugs, JB
KathyR
Dear Bluegrass Girl, Judy, Max and Janet:
Nice to see the video of Nelly: have no idea why the secrecy – it’s not as if there has been much talk about Nelly since retirement, which is typical Downunder. Sportsman reported back in July (15th to be precise) that the pregnancy was progressing well, and the due date was “late September”. It has repeatedly been said that she’s “at a stud at Scone in the Hunter Valley”, which I’ve alway assumed to be Darley. Sportsman again (in July) reported that the connections were considering her next mating with Neil Werrett saying: “She could go to More than Ready, go back to Exceed And Excel, go to Snitzel, High Chaparral is in the mix and there’s one other”. It’s certainly green in the Hunter at the moment – that’s due to the record winter rainfalls experienced in that part of country. Agree about the size of Nelly compared with our “little” bloke and girl, Max! Hugs KathyR
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
I was totally mistaken as to BC’s due date. I thought it was October. Wishing her all the very best with this foaling and in her future as a Mom. Beautiful Girl! Love and Hugs, JB

She looks good. Prayers for a safe foaling and I imagine is just as anticipated since our Queen Z had Coz.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks BGG. She looks very content munching away and accepting pets. Safe foaling to her.

Dear Max.Wow I thought she was due in October.Yet another royal birth.Hope all goes well for her.Our jumpers are all mostly back in training now.I am very nervous about SS re-appearing on a racecourse.Maybe all the feathery friends will disturb Moosie and get him moving again!Hope you enjoyed the red velvet cake!!Free the Moose!PU Beast.Sheena
Max
Sheena. Agree about SS. Hope that he’s okay. Hope also that The Fly returns to top form. Annie Power will probably take over from Quevega. Do you recall that Moosie asked her to visit him in Cheltenham? He never got an answer. Annie is one of those tiny horses like the Beast or Big D.
The cake is gone! Went while watching Andy win.
Free the Moose. Beast, hang up your cape and get some rest. Snake, hope that you are snoozing.

Kitten on the Run, a 5 year old chestnut and a recent addition to Peter Moody’s stable, has been euthanised after breaking a leg at track work this morning. Very sad – was progressing well.

Just found this piece on the Herald Sun’s site regarding Nelly: the bottom of the story gives a hint about the advertising power of the horse, with the new logo announcement for the coming spring carnival:

Makybe Diva’s first foal dead.
I’ve often said how champion broodmares seem to disappear into the ether Downunder. Had it in mind that the great Diva was due to foal from a mating with All Too Hard. She’s had a filly. But in the process discovered that her first foal, by Galileo, Rockstardom who only had two wins, died of a skull fracture after a fall in his stall at Chris Waller’s stable in 2013. Had not seen this reported in any of our racing press. So sad. The Diva has now had six foals since her retirement in 2005 after winning three Melbourne Cups, back to back. Extraordinary achievement and a beautiful mare.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy:
Congrats to Diva and her filly. So very sad that her Galileo colt did not survive his injuries. Poor little one. RIP. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
KathyR. What a sad sad turn of events for that colt. Danger lurks everywhere for horses and all of us. We’ve got to live it up while we can. Nice to hear that the Diva herself is okay. You gave the right description of her. An extraordinary racer.
Free the Moose! Moosie, emulate the Diva. Beast, get some rest. You too, Snakie.

Dear Friends-My brother, not particularly fond of horses, offered to repair the fence I spoke of last week. He knew how disturbed I was by the conditions of the sweet horse. He did have more information though. The family really does love the horse but they know nothing about the care of one. He offered to repair the enclosure and provided boards for a fence. My dad never had barbed wire on our property though it is pretty common around here. His friend provided shaving and they repaired the run in. When the children got home from school their first stop was the horse. He has good hay and clean water. My brother explained to them about cleaning out the droppings. I have to give credit to where credit is due. I was worried but my brother was the one to take action. I have been away for a few days and this is the first time I’ve had to catch up. No internet and no racing! I missed Tom Durkins last day.
