It has been a beautiful spring in Kentucky for Zenyatta and her paddock mate, Vixana. Alys Emson often stops by their paddock with her camera, and she took the following photos in May and June.
Great article as always! Thanks to your outstanding writing, Bateau has come to life again and will have some of the recognition she deserves. It is sad that she had no progeny to carry her wonderful genetic material into other generations.
That C.C. Cook photo of her shows how fine she was, and the portrait by C.W.Anderson is priceless since it gives a close-up of her lovely features. My very first horse pictures were given to me by my Aunt Faye — 3 prints of mares with foals, 2 by C.W. Anderson, which my mother had framed for me. I loved them then, and I love them now after 50 years!
Thank you so much for The Vault and for sharing your exquisite talent with us.
Marshall: Thank you so much! And I didn’t know that you’re another C.W. Anderson fan!!!! Some of my fondest memories are of riding my bike down to our teeny-tiny library and taking out Anderson books. One year, my special birthday gift was “A Filly For Joan” — I certainly was a “Joan” and I just adored that book. I still have it in my library today and over the years I have collected most of the CW thoroughbred books. His last book, about a blind Connemara pony, I found at a used bookstore here….and it was signed!!! His work as a thoroughbred historian is just invaluable as I now realize that his stories were based on the news stories of the day and when he reproduced them, he kept all the neat bits about a horse’s character, the people s/he loved and so forth. And the art. How fabulous that you have 3 of his prints framed. I have one he did of Equipoise framed in my bedroom that I recently found on ETSY. I just love it. Like you, Anderson has come with me for over 60 years as I journey along. Sending you loving hugs!
I do love C.W. Anderson. I don’t have any of his books, but I think that may change soon thanks to ebay and other sites. One of my 3 prints is an Ole Larson of a mare and foal (head and neck picture) which I love, too. My math is a little off — I think it was 55 years instead of 50. Time flies, you know! Lovely memories.
What a great find you have — C.W.’s last book, signed! And you have Equipoise, too.
Great article, BGG!
So wonderful that people come together to help our equine cousins in crisis. It is reassuring to hear in these times of division and partisanship.

Dear BGG,

Sweet Zenny and Vixana stay in the barn and be safe tonight. Just saw that the Lexington area is under a tornado watch and is expecting storms tonight. You two girls stay cozy and happy together. I know Lanes End will take good care of you.
Sue Noel, it has been fascinating to follow your account of Traveller and Barnaby’s situation, and your involvement. So pleased that things are looking up!
Judy B. thanks for that SH/BH article about Eva C. I had somehow missed it.
Oops…meant to add this for Marty R/Colorado: as one of the original posters (those were the days, ) I too remember Katie the “future jockey.” She must have been the one we saw a few days ago having water (?) dumped on her from her fellow jockeys. How nice to see things come full circle. Congratulations to her. Wishing her many more wins! Also nice to hear from you again Marty. Thanks for dropping in and best wishes to you.
Yesterday afternoon, while I was at work, Sue went back out to check on them. It was apparent that Barnaby was lot even leaving her to eat or drink. She moved the water tank over next to the barn entrance, since he wouldn’t go to the waterer. She took them both out of the barn for a little walk and to eat some grass. Then she put Traveller back in her stall. He then took up his post outside her stall, where we found him when we went back last night. Sometimes he looks almost like he is standing at attention !!After we did last night’s chores and got ready to leave, he took up his post and we found him there this morning !!
When Sue took Traveller out for her walk, he followed them all over, even circling the round pen with them. Finally, he noticed me out shoveling poop off of the lawn and came to me. I told him to take a break and he grazed on the lawn, while I was letting her graze on her lead rope. When Boss Mare Sue finished putting up a new hay net for her and put her back in the stall, he was still grazing on the lawn. We then got ready to leave the barn and I thought she would have to call for him. but, before we could turn around, he came strolling around the door into the barn once again taking up his post! He seems to have decided that is his job now and certainly is taking it seriously ! What a guy !
Travie seems better each day and is bright eyed and so glad to see us. She is gobbling her grain and supplements in the mornings and will have a carrot in small bites.
I will go out after work and meet the man who is moving all of the hay, and, hopefully get the stall cleaned out. We are going to let it dry out overnight, in case there is dampness in there and then finish cleaning and spread the bedding tomorrow. There is certainly no hurry as he is perfectly happy just being next to her in the aisle of the barn.
It will be nice to have extended time with them this weekend, as I won’t have to work and Sue does not have to work until the afternoon and evening.
Sweet Dreams, everyone—-especially our Queen and those beautiful boys!!

Most of us think of “grace” as something lithe and flowing and without rough edges. Actually, grace is a blessing that comes without having done anything to earn it-a free gift. Henry Ward Beecher said that God equips us with grace in order that we may be nurses to other people’s weaknesses. Instead of nursing someone’s weakness, why not help them find grace? More people have the gift of grace than realize it. Too often, they smother it with selfishness and flaring tempers. We are all guilty of such things, but we can overcome them if we really want to be gracious.
Many older people are rich in grace because they have learned that it produces peace instead of tension. True grace simply knows the truth and lives by a creed that is the essence of gentleness, joy, and the willingness to help.

You are having quite a lot going on in the UK. I don’t know much about how things work within the EU, but it seems voting to leave might be a bit precipitous. Kind of sad for Mr. Cameron. I think you are right about Scotland and another bid for independence though, but I hope not. I like the “united” part of the UK.
Dear Marshall.I love our UK too and anyway it will take 2 years for us to leave the EU.It had got too big for my liking and now there was the thought of Turkey joining.I well remember a life before the EU and we coped on our own.Of course times have changed now but it’s sad to see those on FB calling the folks who voted “out” elderly and uneducated!I may be heading towards elderly but am not uneducated. It will take a while for things to settle down.Love and hugs Sheena

Dear Sheena,
You, elderly? Certainly not! I don’t know why people need to call anyone names just because they don’t happen to agree — seems sort of juvenile, or “Trump-like” maybe? :-) Oops, there I go doing it, too!
Hey, I remember when there was a Common Market. I guess I am elderly, also! On the up side, we do have common sense and good education.
Take care and have a lovely weekend.

In its long and storied history, the island kingdom has never considered itself to be European. It’s also never been uniformly united, but has carried on for centuries nevertheless in one alliance or another. This vote only proves that yet again. I would bet that not one British horse over there is slightly worried about their long term economic future, even if they never set a hoof on the continent again. It’s the next bag of oats that counts. The world is full of possibilities. Those who cast stones against the results in any election do not understand that in a democracy, the people are always right.

The UK has always been full of independent thinkers and history makers. Many many of us here in the USA trace our roots back there. Unfortunately, on FB and other sites people who don’t know how to civilly disagree resort to name calling.

Poor Marty is having trouble with FB I could only access newsfeed this morning and not friends. One of my FB friends posted last night a man with a knife was found outside his home while daughter Amelia was home alone but all was well.Judy’s family are coming to stay for 2 weeks and Judy has a big surprise for Mango in a couple of weeks a long road trip.Mango was teaching Mattie how to stay cool by wearing a sunhat. As they say politics always ends in tears.Teresa May has been very quiet during all the mud slinging and I have a feeling she may be in running for the top job.Have a great day.We herald a new dawn in Britain.Love and hugs to you, kisses for Angel Holly,Nikko and Sugar.SheenaXOXO

Yes, I saw that Marty was having difficulty with FB. That knife story sounds really strange. Mango and family certainly stay busy! At least Mattie is learning to stay cool. We’ll have to stay tuned to see what Teresa May does. I hope you have a great day as well. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXO

Hay mowing has begun and golden bales dot the fields. Abundant rains have brought us yellow coneflowers and coreopsis across the prairies, and soon there will be many different kinds of sunflowers that love the heat of July. Not long ago we were told by those who know these things that we could expect drought, but the rains came. It seems to be a wait-and-see thing rather than a cut-and-dried fact, as it is with so many things, even in daily personal events.
When we hear negative predictions we can say, “…except for faith.” If we believe it can be different, it can-even when we are tempted to believe the experts who make these predictions. But the Creator is even more able. We must not forget.

Betting against the sceptered isle has never been a good idea. It always finds a way. I wouldn’t worry either about any power play from Scotland. This has been going on since time immemorial. However, keep control over Gibraltar and the Barbary apes. As Churchill said, if the apes go, it’s over.
Dear Kathy.Torrential rain at Newmarket and the cameras were very shaky difficult to watch.Zoe is going to be busy today maybe she will get to see little Summer.Someone had the nerve to say the over 50’s shouldn’t be allowed to vote!!!Well, the world doesn’t revolve around the young!Wimbledon next week and I felt refreshed after a turtle last night. The chicks will be ringed in a week and will,as usual,be named after Welsh lakes and rivers.Have a great day.Stay cool.Love and hugs to you, kisses for Angel Holly,Nikko and Sugar. Congrats to Far FO. Hope he is happy and sound.
Could not take my eye off of that rocket man, Mills. Wow, he was running in Zen like fashion. Very exciting.
Thanks for posting the race, JB.

Dear Ann:
You’re so right. Mills made up so much ground in Z style and in those scorching fractions too. Love and Hugs, JB

Mortal man has not the power to draw aside the veil of unborn time.

Betting against the sceptered isle has never been a good idea. It always finds a way. I wouldn’t worry either about any power play from Scotland. This has been going on since time immemorial. However, keep control over Gibraltar and the Barbary apes. As Churchill said, if the apes go, it’s over.
Marshall (NC Broad)
We’ve missed you, Max.
Great to hear from you! Like the reference from Sir Winston about Gibraltar and the apes, too.
Have a good weekend!
