Dear fans,

It’s an exciting time of the year. The Derby is approaching, and Zenyatta is preparing to give birth to her fifth foal. She is in great health and on track for a mid-May foaling. We will keep you posted as the big day nears. Alys took some great images of Zenyatta on Friday enjoying a beautiful Kentucky spring day.

      Getting ready for the Kentucky Derby had me watching Giacomo, the ’05 winner, owned by Ann and Jerry Moss, risen by Mike Smith. Discovered that Giacomo is now(as of 2015) at a horse farm in Newberg, OR, where Grindstone, a former KD winner also resides.
      And now the Mosses have Gormley slated to run on Derby Day.

    Just a note to let everyone know if they don’t already that Oregon, another of the Mosses’ horses will be running in the 9th race at Santa Anita this Sunday, April 30. Good Luck and Best wishes to all concerned. May all Zsters and all animals sleep beautifully.

    Rice continues outstanding run at Laurel Park

    Her focus since she began training horses 30 years ago has been to win races, not count them. Though she knew she was doing well at Laurel Park’s current winter-spring stand, Linda Rice had no idea that success had her in striking distance of a meet title.
    With seven days left in a meet that began Jan. 1 and ends May 7, the New York-based Rice –who for the first time has a string of horses at Laurel – has 21 wins, just four shy of co-leaders Claudio Gonzalez and Kieron Magee. Rice has two horses entered both Friday and Saturday at Laurel.

    Hovis was enjoying himself with his lady love and the medium-sized ginger (not to be confused with the high maintenance dude or the small ginger dude)when she who must be obeyed returned.He did have fun with Aunty Em Aunty H and the boss lady now everything has gone downhill! Life returns to normal for the big guy.Safe trips to all horses and jockeys this weekend.

    Wicklow Brave wins the Champion hurdle for the Mullins team.Vroum Vroum Mag faded but Labaik decided he’d enjoy a run today and was 4th.Congratulations to Mullins who also won the Novice Hurdle with Bacardys.

      Don’t you all get mad at me, but I think (and I sure am no expert) that Royal Mo is going to turn out to be the better of the two. Of course that could just because I am a real push over the big handsome boys! Like Muchie.

      Denise, I agree, he appears to have a huge engine. Last race his shoeing appeared off as he never seemed to get a stride but was “hopping” as though his shoeing was not letting him fully engage.

    Dear Judy:Hope your computer issues are resolved.A new female osprey from the Tweed Valley has been around the Dyfi so I went on their website they have a lonely male there SS Blue really should spread her wings!!Clarach is still at Aberfoyle.They have a web-cam during the daylight hours.Blue FK8 winters in Portugal.I remember Beatrice used to winter in Spain.Jumps finale tomorrow.The Fly and his friends got lots of visitors this week and both the ‘Fly’ and Eustace paraded at Punchestown today.Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT Cap Hercules Frank Bentley Willow and all the sweeties.Love and hugs SheenaX

    Per an article in Bloodhorse, gates 6 and 16 have produced the most Derby winners. Most of #16 have been recent winners except for CC who came out of #6.

    No amount of money can buy the joy of watching Menorah winning his 4th consecutive Oaksey chase at the age of 12 and getting promptly retired.Wishing you a long and happy life.He is going to live with his jockey Dickie Johnson
    Many Clouds overwhelmingly won horse of the year and Oliver has written a wonderful tribute.JP Mcmanus is owner of the year and the trainers title goes to the wire.

    Congratulations to Nicky Henderson for winning the champions title as Altior scores in the celebration chase..Is Altior another Henderson superstar in the making?The new bad boy of racing Labaik sustained a serious injury at Punchestown yesterday and will be retired now.I am sad as we need these lovable rogues in racing.Get well soon.

      The gray rogue may still be racing or not racing next year. The Irish papers say that Labaik is sore after his race and will be assessed by vets next week. It looks like he’s not yet retired. In the race in which he actually consented to run and got the injury, Dalkari, another gray who is trained by Mullins, refused to start. If Labaik retires, Dalkari can take over the Moose role. Wicklow Brave ran a great race to win it with Patrick Mullins. The commentators said that he’s quirky too. Likes to kick. Not a good idea to get on the track and try to encourage him up close like Gordon Elliott and the Mullins staff tried with both Labaik and Dalkari on Friday.
      Mullins horses had braided manes for the Festival. They are always beautifully presented.

      The racing gods have spoken. Even Apple’s Jade could not stop the relentless Mullins juggernaut. Despite many setbacks this season, such as the transfer of 60 horses from Gigginstown to Gordon Elliott including Apple’s Jade, the tragic death of Vautour, injuries to Faugheen and Douvan, and Annie Power not racing, Mullins and his team overcame all to win the Irish trainer’s title. This guy is a genius.

        • Did you see the race at the Punchestown Festival which was won by Great Field for Mullins? Stablemate Townsend threw off the short guy, left him sitting on the turf and still managed to come in second behind Great Field. GF is a character. Mullins says that a jockey has to be young to keep up with him. His jump technique is all over the place. He’s also the boss. The jockey is an accessory. McManus owns a winner with GF.

      I know it isn’t fair, but really lowers my opinion of John S. I am sure he doesn’t care what I think, but that was a rotten thing to do to Ziconic. What Victor said was awful. I cannot believe Ann would agree to this for her boy.

        I agree, hate it that ZI was used that way. Never liked it when Bullet Train was the rabbit for Frankel either. Love and Hugs, JB

        • Cecil used Bullet Train as a rabbit to help his brother because at that point Bullet Train had won races but was winding down his racing career before heading to stud. It would not affect his ability mentally to win races. Maybe it’s already over for Ziconic too? They might think that he will never break his maiden and he is now just a target horse. Don’t know but it doesn’t look so good.
