Dear fans,
It’s an exciting time of the year. The Derby is approaching, and Zenyatta is preparing to give birth to her fifth foal. She is in great health and on track for a mid-May foaling. We will keep you posted as the big day nears. Alys took some great images of Zenyatta on Friday enjoying a beautiful Kentucky spring day.
Enjoy!

Speaking of the Derby…
Highly recommend Esquire TV’s (ESQTV) series “Horseplayers” for all thoroughbred racing fans. Features a motley cast of entertaining characters, including a very young Matt Bernier who now has his own show on DRF TV.
The entire season (10 episodes) will be shown this coming Saturday, April 29th starting at Noon and finishing at 11:00 p.m. EDT.
Zenny fans will be especially interested in Episode 6 “Bankroll Buster” on at 5:00 p.m. EDT. It takes place in Lexington, KY and features Keeneland and a visit to Lane’s End to see You-Know-Who. Very touching to hear these hard-nosed rail birds getting misty eyed over The Queen’s magic!

Because of the late foaling date for Zenyatta would I be correct in assuming she will not be bred this year?
Becky from Toronto
Pam Homeier – Zenyetta was open 2 years ago which helped trim her form and then she lost her foal last year which brings me back to a question I had a while ago. Why is she so late this year when she had a year off 2 years ago. Even last year seemed like a late foaling seeing how she had the year off before.

Sheena,
“Lest we forget”. What courage and tenacity the brave men had. Many of the nurses also were on the front line in the battles. Not sure if they were in this one, but such a sacrifice they all made for us all. God’s blessings for you, with love Elizabeth

I bet she will be so happy to get rid of that huge tummy..wow! I just had surgery (beware, everyone-many complications) and due to the internal bleeding I encountered, my belly looks like I am ready to birth five babies. So uncomfortable so I can imagine in the near coming weeks she will start to be a bit uncomfortable. I was looking at Daddy the other day, and I did not realize how much they look alike!! Wow! We can pretty much know what this one looks like! (watch it come out grey or something! LOL) I just am going crazy wanting to know girl or boy. Hoping for girl since its MDO, but his colts are nothing to sneeze at either.
I wouldn’t think they would breed her so late in the season, and good for them! Our girl needs a rest up this year, running and I still say I would love to see them saddle her up for a light jog on the farm like they did Slew when he got so huge. She is a people horse and that would really make her happy.
sheena.davies(wales)
Hope you are feeling better. It would be great if Zenyatta had a trot around the farm one day and maybe dance!
Becky from Toronto
Great photos of Zenyetta and her two companions. Thanks Team Z she looks marvellous.
Safe uneventful birth beautiful girl.
Does anybody have a photo of Eblouissante – Dansili filly born March 20 according to Throughbred.com. No photos on their website yet.

Dear Judy:I hadn’t heard any news about Ebby’s filly.A difficult cold day for the ospreys hail for Glesni snow for EJ at Loch Garten but a 2015 chick arrived back at Rutland today too young to breed but they hope she finds a partner. There are 6 lonely males at Rutland so Blue start spreading your wings!Lovely to see Sprinter parading at Punchestown today.Hope it warms up tomorrow.Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT Cap Hercules Frank Bentley Willow and all the sweeties.Love and hugs SheenaX

Sheena, thank you for today’s message. We hope for three and will feel great if there are two who fledge and live but GREAT NEWS about all those new males!! GO Blue 24.. I am one of her big cheering sections. Introduced the DYfI to my Charleston, S. Carolina niece and nephew. They arr (as in get the car–r-r-r-r started) excited. Am praying hard for Zenny right now.. It is time for a healthy foaling.. I am feeling guilty that my broodmare, Addison’s Honor has had 2 perfect matings with Suances( french and English champion) has had 2 perfect foals. One is now a yearling Big Red Valenitine) and the new one , Piru Pi, is 1 and almost 1/2 month old.
sheena.davies(wales)
It’s still cold over but dry so far.It would be wonderful for Blue to find a partner but of course her one true love is Monty! It’s great your niece and nephew are getting interested. So many fans all around the world now.Yes,praying for a healthy foal for Zenyatta too.You must be so proud of your foals.

Hi there everyone:
Thank you Team Z for the Zenny update. My goodness but she looks just outstanding! I read someone above asking whether or not Zenny would be bred in 2017. I wonder that too, and I’m inclined to think “no” because the 2018 foal would be as late as this baby, or later.
I’m so excited about this baby-to-be! And I’m really, truly hoping for a filly, although a colt (if it got the Street Cry X) could be exciting too!
I’m up to my eyeballs in volunteer work at the moment, but before things got too intense I wanted to share some memories of Oaks winners between 1990 – 2016 who are favourites of mine for all kinds of reasons. On THE VAULT, with lots of video; just click below. And you might be surprised to see who won the Oaks in 1994…..
https://thevaulthorseracing.wordpress.com/2017/04/26/lets-hear-it-for-the-girls-my-favourite-kentucky-oaks-heroines/
Ironically, I haven’t picked an Oaks favourite for this year, although I really like & respect PARADISE WOODS, SALTY, ABEL TASMAN and DADDYS LIL DARLING. For the Derby, I’m on the McCRAKEN train, although I do think it would be lovely to see the Moss’ silks in the winner’s circle again. THUNDER SNOW may not fly in to compete since the 2000 Guineas runs on the same day. Decision expected by this Friday at the latest. I would love to see ROYAL MO get in as I think he looks really promising!
Love & hugs to all, peppermint kisses to Zenny and her boys. Love you forever Z Princess and Little Boy.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Abigail.I must admit Rags to Riches was the first of your Oaks winners I got to know.Such a gutsy horse how she dug deep to win the Belmont the true mark of a champion and then dear Rachel running just for fun.Two totally different champions but in so many ways the same.Thank you for sharing Hugs Sheena
shirleeinindy
Thanks so much for the posting about the Oaks winners. Thank you so very very much for mentioning the ill fated Go For Wand. Wanda, as she was called, is sometimes forgotten in the shadow of Ruffian.
Of course, my heart was with Rachel! What a thrill she gave us. And who would have believed that Rags to Riches an Oaks winner would beat the boys in the Belmont?
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Abigail,
You have wowed me again! What a wonderful collection of commentary and videos you have put together for us. Thank you so much for The Vault! You write beautifully. I enjoyed this “re-memory” of the Oaks from 1990-2016 very much, especially Blind Luck’s win, Rags to Riches, Sardula, Silverbulletday . . . basically, all of them!
Hugs and Love

Dear Judy:Sad news poor Milo has gone to the great laboratory in the sky.He joins his brothers Marty and Wimbley. His health problems were just too much for him.
At least it promises milder soon.A nice win by Cracksman (Frankel’s boy) in a derby trial today he got boxed in down the stretch but came wide and won by a neck.Epsom is a difficult track for a youngster.Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT Cap Hercules Frank Willow Bentley and all the sweeties.Love and hugs SheenaX

Beautiful pictures – thanks to Alys’ careful eye. Thanks to Team Z and Lane’s End for keeping in touch. Queen Z looks wonderful!
Roberta
Hopeing all goes well for Mama and baby:)
Mid may birth? My birthday is the 21st, :)
She looks great !!
Hopefully they’ll wait a year to breed again
One baby on top of one another can’t be healthy for her
When you guys breed her again, let’s have a Zenny/ American Pharoh baby
How spectacular that baby would be
Roberta
Meant to ask..
Does anyone know how her 2 boys are doing ??
Are they racing? Having any success on the track?
Or are they going to make lovely hunter jumpers? :)
judy berube
Dear Roberta:
COZ has worked 3 times in March and 3 times in April (maybe he will be racing soon) and ZI has raced twice; March 19 and April 16, nice efforts finishing 3rd and 2nd. Love and Hugs, JB

Thank you Team Z for letting us know. Zenny looks beautiful. Had no idea her foal would be this late in the calendar year. Here’s hoping for an uneventful birth and a healthy foal. Hail to the Queen!
sheena.davies(wales)
Annie Power may have ran her last race. She hasn’t been entered for the mares hurdle on Saturday. She didn’t please Mullins in her workout. No sparkle but he will have discussions with Rich Ricci before any announcement.
Someone has emailed Summer wind farm and asked for photos of Ebby and her foal. She may be covered by another European stallion before returning home.
Doreen
Wouldn’t this be Zenyatta’s fourth foal? The last one was Princess Z who died young, correct? Just wondering. I wish our Queen Z the best with this new baby.
judy berube
Dear Doreen:
Z’s fourth baby was born on April 10, 2016 with Meconium staining and passed away three days later. This is the Blog Post from that sad day. He was a gorgeous colt by War Front. Love and Hugs, JB

Girvin has a quarter crack and is iffy for the Derby. Sorry for this misfortune as I liked him a lot. But, gets Royal Mo a little closer to getting in. It is always so hard for the team when the horse develops a problem this close to the race.
Ann NC
Well, duurrrnnnn!
Sending healing thoughts to that precious boy. Ya just never know.
Am about to explode, want KY Derby day to get here. Until then, wishing and hoping and praying for all of those precious babies.

Dear Shirlee and Ann:
Adding my healing prayers to yours for Girvin and good health wishes and good racing luck for all of these beautiful baby boys. Love and Hugs, JB

Great photos of our Queen!! Thanks!! You seem to be so relaxed, Zenny. :-) Yes, Mother’s Day would be nice, wouldn’t it? Crossing hooves for a safe and uneventful delivery!
Media news: (perhaps some may already be aware): in current issue of TV guide on p. 46 is an article on the Derby (with a positive spin–nice!) and next to that is a photo of Gormley and Victor from the SA Derby!! And just this morning I happened across a radio interview with Victor on CBS Sports radio show: After Hours with Amy Lawrence. A little over 12 minutes. He talks about Pharoah, Hall of Fame and of course Gormley. His description of how Gormley behaves is really interesting! Sorry, I can’t tell you how to access it–I just came across it by accident. I’m sure it’s “out there” somewhere.
