Dear Ann and Sign: Have found another story on Little Miss Feral in my copy of the Sportsman newspaper: unfortunately they don’t have a web site that covers anything other than the form guide, and it’s a rather long article. Will see if I can shorten it a little, otherwise may have to retype it for you. Hugs, KathyR.

Dear Kathy R,
Wonderful summary of Little Miss Feral below.
Really hope she wins the big money.
Dear Max: She has the brand mark for Gilgai Farm, where she was foaled. Don’t think they have any plans to get a “Girl Power” one for her though!
Max
KathyR. It looks like GP only, so that it could stand for Girl Power. In the photo, her groom is leading her. I remember him on tv as the one who told all about the Ms Nelly and Saloon romance at Ascot.
Kathy R.
Dear Max: I think it depends on the clarity of the photo – the one I checked out in my files has the “F” looking quite clear – maybe it depends on whether she is recently clipped? But the GP logo is quite appropriate. Cheers!
Dear Sign: Freeze branding is most commonly used here – it seems to vary what is required in each state by way of identification (numbers or letters – Northern Territory has a “T” for example). Some have the stud on the left shoulder, and the year on the right. I don’t know about lip tattoos. Will seek out the up to date information though – ages since I read about the requirements.
HeidiK Vallejo,Ca PUJ
I had always wondered about that too. It seems that horses from across the pond have some sort of brand on either shoulder or hip. Interesting.

Dear Kathy R,
For some reason we use a “lip tattoo” with a number that is registered
with the US Jockey club to identify our TB’s. Not sure the reason
we don’t use “branding”. Seems like neither would not feel good for a
few moments.
Is this the location that my beloved Bernardini goes to when the breeding season is over in Kentucky? I guess Street Cry has been shuttled there too. Hugs, JB
Dear Judy: Bernardini will return to Kelvinside, near Aberdeen in the Hunter Valley – it’s a really beautiful property. The Agnes Banks farm shown in the piece is in the Hawkesbury region, near Sydney (about an hour or so drive from the tracks in the city) and is used to relax and train the team. Street Cry will also come back to the Hunter. Darley now has a property in Victoria, and is sending some of their top young fellows there, like Sepoy. I am a real fan of Peter Snowden and his team – they’re just brilliant in the way they maintain and care for their horses, and also are quite particular about just who they let ride them. Hugs, KathyR.

KathyR. Very interesting. He is a handsome horse. It seems as if French names for horses has a bit of following in Australia? I like the name Mon Gateau, so much better to the ear than My Cake.
Dear Max: It is interesting to think of how his name came about: Kevin Sheedy is a former plumber and trained the Essendon Football Team to premiership victories. I find it hard to think of Kevin being a Francophile – is very much a typical bloke, like Moody. Maybe his wife is the influence? But the Mon Gateau comment is a beauty!!

It was posted on the Blog on Sept. 25, 2012.
Happy Wednesday!
While recently in Kentucky for the Keeneland Yearling sales, Dottie and John went by the farm to say hello to Zenyatta and to meet “Baby Z”. John was tickled when Zenyatta came right over to say hello, and watching baby 12Z running in the paddock with his friends was pure delight! It was great time for all.
Enjoy the photos from their visit!

Anne says Rightful’s leg was wrapped and he walked into the van. She and Rod didn’t go back to the barn afterwards because they felt they would only be in the way. She guesses Rightful was taken to the track hospital. We’re all praying for Rightful, Anne and Rod!

Trina. Thanks for this link. Great story. She is a very intelligent horse. And Barbara was right. Mariska bypassed the stall of her mother, who is the dominant mare. No sense getting any time out call from mom.

Dear Max:
That explains why she walked by the first stall. Wow, horses are incredible. Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. You are right. Horses are noble and magical, forever fascinating one and all. Zenyatta however is now the most wonderful of God’s own creatures. Never forget the 2010 BCC where this was plain for everyone to see.
What a hoot! And it wasn’t just one type of door either! I thought he was doing a “Lava Man impersonation” with something that looked like a food bin, but once he got that one open, he didn’t seem to be chowing down. Thanks Trina.
Trina,
So funny. Nothing is safe not even a food locker.
Sandy, first thing I thought was Don’t Show this to Lava Man!
Just think of the fun he could have.
I guess a time-out in the paddock didn’t work either.
Hugs,
Keta
Wow. When you come late to the party, it’s hard to know which reply button to push.
Thanks, Trina, for sharing this video. What a smart horse. I wonder how they actually keep her in. Very cute and a smile maker.
“Nothing short of an impressive win at Caulfield on Saturday will entice trainer Daniel Clarken to part with the $55,000 late entry fee for unbeaten filly Miracles of Life to contest the Blue Diamond. Already the clear favourite for next month’s $1 million feature, Clarken said Miracles of Life will only get the one shot at proving she’s up with the best two-year olds. “We have until the 18th of February to pay the late entry fee so we can get a guide on this race and a guide on the colts,” Clarken said. “She has to win pretty comfortably and pull up well from it too to suggest we will go further. I think we will race her sparingly and go straight into the Diamond”. Clarken elected not to change rider despite plenty of interest from Melbourne’s jockey ranks. “Lauren looks big on top of her but by changing jockeys they can have different balances, she know the horse so we’re happy to keep the combination together.” The filly who didn’t go through the sale ring because of her lack of size has won her two starts untroubled and by a combined margin of 14 and a half lengths.”
This is from the Sportsman, our best racing newspaper, and the article was by Ray Hickson. It was quite long, so I’ve summarised it to give you the main storyline. As I indicated elsewhere, Sportsman only has an online edition with the form guide for all Aussie racing. Anyway – I just hope the winning streak continues, and that they have a safe journey. Hugs, KathyR.

Used for all breeds. Does not say why it was chosen over a tatoo, though. Seems like
more convenient.

BLOODHORSE: JOCKEY CLUB CALLING FOR BREEDSER AND OWNERS
TO NAME THEIR 2011 BY FEBRUARY 1, 2013 TO AVOID A $100 FEE, ALSO
RULES BELOW
The Name Game: Deadline Set to Name for Free
By Blood-Horse Staff

The Jockey Club has issued a reminder to owners and breeders that a valid attempt to name foals of 2011 must be made by Feb. 1 to avoid a $100 late fee.
Names selections can be submitted to The Jockey Club from the registry website or can be submitted via mobile applications developed for the iOS and Android platforms. The “Naming Application” to reserve, change, or claim a name Thoroughbred is available to be downloaded free.
As an aid in selecting a desired name, in December The Jockey Club published a list of approximately 46,000 names released from active use. A majority of the released names are from horses more than 10 years old that have not raced or been used for breeding during the preceding five years. Names selected from the list for re-use are subject to approval by The Jockey Club.
“The Jockey Club’s online and mobile resources offer owners and breeders an efficient, convenient method to research and decide on names for their Thoroughbreds,” said Matt Iuliano, The Jockey Club’s executive vice president and executive director. “The list of recently released names can be reviewed for suggestions and the Online Names Book is an invaluable tool to compare potential choices to currently in-use names.”
The list of recently released names and the Online Names Book are updated daily as names are claimed. More information is available at registry.jockeyclub.com or Registry mobile at mobile.registry.jockeyclub.com.
The Jockey Club release said the Interactive Registration is the most efficient means to submit name applications to the registry. TJC said applications submitted through Interactive Registration are preliminarily screened to eliminate direct matches with names unavailable for use and that owners who name their Thoroughbreds through Interactive Registration receive their first choice approximately 75% of the time.
There are a set of rules that are to be followed in naming a Thoroughbred. Some of the most important guidelines pertaining to names not eligible for use can be found under Section “F” within the Naming section of The Jockey Club rules.
They include:
F. The following classes of names are not eligible for use:
1. Names consisting of more than 18 letters (spaces and punctuation marks count as letters);
2. Names consisting entirely of initials such as C.O.D., F.O.B., etc.;
3. Names ending in “filly,” “colt,” “stud,” “mare,” “stallion,” or any similar horse-related term;
4. Names consisting entirely of numbers. Numbers above thirty may be used if they are spelled out;
5. Names ending with a numerical designation such as “2nd” or “3rd,” whether or not such a designation is spelled out;
6. Names of living persons unless written permission to use their name is on file with The Jockey Club;
7. Names of persons no longer living unless approval is granted by The Jockey Club based upon a satisfactory written explanation submitted to the Registrar;
8. Names of racetracks or graded stakes races;
9. Names clearly having commercial, artistic or creative significance;
10. Names that are suggestive or have a vulgar or obscene meaning; names considered in poor taste; or names that may be offensive to religious, political or ethnic groups;
11. Names that appear to be designed to harass, humiliate or disparage a specific individual, group of individuals or entity;
12. Names that are currently active either in racing or breeding (see Rule6(E));
13. Names of winners in the past 25 years of grade one stakes races;
14. Permanent names. The list of criteria to establish a permanent name is as follows:
a. Horses in racing’s Hall of Fame;
b. Horses that have been voted Horse of the Year;
c. Horses that have won an Eclipse Award;
d. Horses that have won a Sovereign Award (Canadian Champions);
e. Annual leading sire and broodmare sire by progeny earnings;
f. Cumulative money winners of $2 million or more;
g. Horses that have won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes, The Jockey Club Gold Cup, the Breeders’ Cup Classic or the Breeders’ Cup Turf; and
h. Horses included in the International List of Protected Names.
15. Names similar in spelling or pronunciation to the classes of names listed in Rule 6(F) 6 – 14 above.
16. Names of horses previously recorded in The American Stud Book by the same sire or out of the same dam as the foal for which the attempt is made.
17. Names of horses appearing within the first five generations of the pedigree of the foal for which the attempt is made.
Dear Sign: Now that is the reason I prefer the national anthems of most other countries to the Australian one.! Most people here dislike it and prefer what they call the national song (mentioned previously – the one about the sheep stealing suicide bloke). Australian Day is an excuse for all sorts of crazies to emerge – the folk who call it Invasion Day, the ones who complain about the Union Jack in the corner of the flag and the need to change it, etc. etc. Think is just falls at the end of a very, very long holiday break for a lot of folk and they have the sulks about returning to work or school.!

And however do you get from one spot to another fast enough not to miss anything? On a non-horse note, the mountains were SO clear! Didn’t realize just how hazy they apparently were in November. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Trina. Thanks for this link. Great story. She is a very intelligent horse. And Barbara was right. Mariska bypassed the stall of her mother, who is the dominant mare. No sense getting any time out call from mom.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Trina,
Great video! This horse is brilliant!
Thanks and hugs!
Max
Trina. A great video. Loved that horse.

Thanks Trina
Very talented, two different type of doors he figured out.

Dear Trina, Carol, Marshall, Max, Janet and Z Fans:
That is an amazing horse and so beautiful. Trina, thanks for sharing. Hugs, JB
Max, so funny how he just walked by the first stall. Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
What a hoot! And it wasn’t just one type of door either! I thought he was doing a “Lava Man impersonation” with something that looked like a food bin, but once he got that one open, he didn’t seem to be chowing down. Thanks Trina.
Keta
Trina,

Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I may be confused about the horse’s gender – may not have listened well enough.

Zenny and 12Z, stay warm during these cold nights. Zenny, soon you’ll have a new foal at your side and the magic begins all over again.

For Feral Filly fans:

Dear Kathy R,
Wonderful continuing saga.
Interesting comment about not changing jockeys, she is used to his
weight and balance. Very important for the horse.

She is used to HER weight and balance—Lauren is a female jockey. Ride like a girl!

more lifting and pulling etc…

Dear Kathy R and Zenny Fans,
Here is a short article on the use of lip tattoos to identify US and Canadian race horses.
Used for all breeds. Does not say why it was chosen over a tatoo, though. Seems like
more convenient.

Dear Kathy R and Zenny Fans,
Victoria Azarenak winner of a semi final over Sloane Stephens is accused of
gamesmanship after calling for a 9 minute medical time out. After the game
she told TV interviewers, ” I had to take a little time to calm myself”. Not a reason for
a medical time out. Seems their should be some intervention here.
A little manipulative, I would say.

BLOODHORSE: JOCKEY CLUB CALLING FOR BREEDSER AND OWNERS
TO NAME THEIR 2011 BY FEBRUARY 1, 2013 TO AVOID A $100 FEE, ALSO
RULES BELOW
The Name Game: Deadline Set to Name for Free

1. Names consisting of more than 18 letters (spaces and punctuation marks count as letters);
2. Names consisting entirely of initials such as C.O.D., F.O.B., etc.;
3. Names ending in “filly,” “colt,” “stud,” “mare,” “stallion,” or any similar horse-related term;
4. Names consisting entirely of numbers. Numbers above thirty may be used if they are spelled out;
5. Names ending with a numerical designation such as “2nd” or “3rd,” whether or not such a designation is spelled out;
6. Names of living persons unless written permission to use their name is on file with The Jockey Club;
7. Names of persons no longer living unless approval is granted by The Jockey Club based upon a satisfactory written explanation submitted to the Registrar;
8. Names of racetracks or graded stakes races;
9. Names clearly having commercial, artistic or creative significance;
10. Names that are suggestive or have a vulgar or obscene meaning; names considered in poor taste; or names that may be offensive to religious, political or ethnic groups;
11. Names that appear to be designed to harass, humiliate or disparage a specific individual, group of individuals or entity;
12. Names that are currently active either in racing or breeding (see Rule6(E));
13. Names of winners in the past 25 years of grade one stakes races;
14. Permanent names. The list of criteria to establish a permanent name is as follows:
a. Horses in racing’s Hall of Fame;
b. Horses that have been voted Horse of the Year;
c. Horses that have won an Eclipse Award;
d. Horses that have won a Sovereign Award (Canadian Champions);
e. Annual leading sire and broodmare sire by progeny earnings;
f. Cumulative money winners of $2 million or more;

Dear Kathy R and Zenny fans,
Found this video of Jessica Maubroy singing Australian National Anthem for
Australia Day. Maybe you could tell us about this Kathy R?
http://video.dailytelegraph.com.au/2327712045/Jess-sings-Australian-National-anthem
Kathy R.

Dear Kathy R,
Too funny, a time to complain and and grumble.

Dear Zenny Fans,
Lovely photo album of I’ll Have Another, by Barbara Livingston.
Not sure if it has been posted, but definatley worth another look.
The interaction of IHA and Lava Man on Preakness day is priceless.
They look like two “prize fighters” encouraging each other. Love the
photo of IHA day after the Derby with Doug O Neill. Looks like he might
take a chunk out of his hand.
ENJOY !!!

Wonderful video Karen!! We’ve all seen videos of the race itself, but all your “behind the scenes” action is absolutely terrific!! Who knew folks could see the workings of the saddling barn? And however do you get from one spot to another fast enough not to miss anything? On a non-horse note, the mountains were SO clear! Didn’t realize just how hazy they apparently were in November. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
