The college was closed after the shooting erupted about 12:20 p.m. at the campus at 2700 W.W. Thorne, but it will resume normal operations this morning, according to the college’s website.
An argument between two men sparked the gunfire, authorities say. One of the men was wounded. The gunman apparently accidently shot himself in the hip. A college maintenance worker, described as a innocent bystander, was also wounded in the shooting.
Carlton Berry, 22,.has been accused of pulling the trigger. He is charged with aggravated assault, though he remains hospitalized for the apparently self-inflicted accidental gunshot wound.
The conditions of the other wounded men were not released. A female student was treated at the scene for a medical event possibly related to the gunfire.
Investigators were trying to piece together what caused Berry and the man to argue and why the confrontation escalated into gunfire.
The shooting rocked the otherwise peaceful, tree-shaded campus. Students dashed for cover when they heard the gunshots and made phones calls and took to social media to tell loved ones and friends what was happening.
Rohit Mistry, a 21-year-old studying criminal justice at Lone Star, was on the third floor of library, books open, when he noticed people running. A librarian asked all those present to move into a back room, he said.
“I saw people running around,” Mistry said. “That’s when the librarians were asking us to move into a back room where offices were.”
Several dozen people crammed into the room, with some students crying and others calling their parents.
The campus was locked down as police took control of the scene. Students were evacuated. The campus was later determined to be safe.

BLOODHORSE: WHERE THE HORSES OF THE YEAR BROKE THEIR MAIDENS
( comment; wonderful account of this historical information)
Where Horses of Year Broke Their Maidens
22 Jan 2013 1:05 PM Leave a Comment
The following stemmed from a morning editorial meeting when the question was asked whether Wise Dan is the first Horse of the Year to have broken his maiden at Turfway Park. (He did so March 27, 2010, as a 3-year-old.)
He isn’t the only one, however. Alysheba notched his first victory at Turfway (then called Latonia Race Course) in 1986 as a 2-year-old, and two years later was Horse of the Year at age 4.
So we started thinking: Which racetrack has produced the most Horses of the Year since the Eclipse Awards began in 1971 in terms of where the horses broke their maidens?
Hollywood Park in California tops the list with seven Horse of the Year titles by six horses, followed by Belmont Park with six titles by five horses. Those two tracks easily lead the pack.
Five Horses of the Year won their first races in foreign countries, but none broke their maidens at Saratoga Racecourse. Defunct Jefferson Downs in Louisiana had as many as Churchill Downs and Keeneland.
Black Tie Affair not only broke his maiden at Keystone Race Track (now Parx Racing) in Pennsylvania, but he raced there another six times during his 2- and 3-year-old seasons. He wasn’t crowned Horse of the Year until he was 5.
Anyway, here’s the list, for what it’s worth; the dates in parenthesis are the year the horse won Horse of the Year:
AT LEAST TWO HORSES
Hollywood Park (7 titles/6 horses): Zenyatta (2010), Ghostzapper (2004), Tiznow (2000), Charismatic (1999), Cigar (1995-96), and Sunday Silence (1989)
Belmont Park (6 titles/5 horses): Lady’s Secret (1986), Conquistador Cielo (1982), Affirmed (1978-79), Seattle Slew (1977), and Ack Ack (1971)
Santa Anita Park: Azeri (2002), A.P. Indy (1992), and Ferdinand (1987)
Gulfstream Park (3 titles/2 horses): Curlin (2007-08) and Saint Liam (2005)
Monmouth Park: Skip Away (1998) and Holy Bull (1994)
Turfway Park/Latonia Race Course: Wise Dan (2012) and Alysheba (1988)

The half-hour unveiling will take a special look at former steeplechase jockey, Jake Chalfin, whose promising career in the saddle ended when he was paralyzed from a fall during a race at the Blue Ridge Point-to-Point Races in Virginia in September, 2010.
Chalfin’s love of horses, and racing, placed him in a position for a very productive riding career, which was being fueled by tutelage from Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard, as well as top jump conditioner, Ricky Hendriks. The horrific injury cut short a hoped-for career in the saddle, but has not dimmed Chalfin’s strong will and passion for the sport — and his love of horses.
The determined Chalfin candidly talks about the inherent thrill of riding, the acknowledged risks, and how he continues to cope since the injury that ended his lifelong dream. The close-knit steeplechase community has rallied around Chalfin, with a variety of fund-raisers, and he remains steadfast in his commitment to pursue a career involving horses.
Chasing: A Steeplechase Story includes picturesque footage of the rolling hills and landscape of Pennsylvania. The pastoral look of the lush fields sets a wonderful backdrop and provides a further testament to the beauty of the sport.
The documentary was produced by Kristy Cecil — wife of veteran California-based trainer, Ben Cecil — who also serves as a producer for the popular TV sitcom, The Big Bang Theory. Cecil originally submitted the piece for the first-ever HRTV Film Festival at Santa Anita in 2012, but the detailed storyline, while of high-quality and undeniable intrigue, wasn’t ideally suited for the maximum five-minute shot.
Recognizing its vast potential, HRTV and Cecil explored the possibility of expanding it to a half-hour documentary, and the end result is its debut on the network.

Not sure if my comment in the thread of your lovely foal pictures
got lost. Lovely Lonhro filly and Cape Blanco. Looks like the mare
bred to Lonhro was a chestnut? guess that is why filly is light bay.
Lonhro is so dark, I guess considered black. Love the comments
that when one approaches at Darley, he does not hesitate to bite,
the sign of a good breeding stallion, lots of testosterone.

Keta. There is a third tweet from the KY TB Association which explains it. Oxbow and our Paynter are from the same gene pool, but not related other than being the progeny of Awesome Again. To be full brothers or sisters, horses have to have the same sire and dam. In this case, the dams are different for these two horses. It’s still very neat though.

Keta. They were actually not wrong. They were referring to the genetic heritage of the two horses rather than any recognized equine family relationships. In other words, although not full brothers in the way in which pedigrees are normally read through the particular dam, Ox and Paynter have basically the same generic background though their link via the full sisters and Awesome Again. Very very neat.

Market Quote, a first-time starter in the fourth race at Santa Anita on Sunday, was left in the gate for nearly three seconds but was able to overtake the field for the victory.
The 4-year-old daughter of After Market was making her debut for trainer John Shirreffs in a mile race on turf for maiden fillies.
She balked when the starting gate opened. By the time she started running after urging from jockey Joe Talamo, she was 10 lengths behind in a field of nine.
“Right when the gate opened, I think it scared her,” Talamo said. “She hesitated. After that, there was nothing else to do but be patient.”
She was 13 lengths behind in last place when she started to show her talent. http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-horse-comeback-20130120,0,5668390.story

I hope after the Zenyatta/Tapit baby is weened, that Ann will make arrangements to bring Zenyatta back home. Maybe she can hang out at the barns, so she can be happy with all the excitement again. Hope this one is a filly, one of each. Missing and loving the Queen, Lisag
I would suspect that if Z13 looks to be something special Zenyatta will go back to Tapit or on to another stallion that no doubt Dottie and the Mosses have put a lot of time into considering.
Zenyatta is a broodmare now, that is her job and as we can see from these photographs she is happy, healthy and enjoying the life of a horse. She goes out with equine friends and lazes about in a pasture with all the mud she could want. She has all the human activity and attention she could crave and she is no longer held in a stall for 22 hours out of the day.
It just strikes me as the height of selfishness when I hear people want to wish her back to what is an unnatural life for a horse. We can see in these pictures Lane’s End and the Mosses are gracious enough to share with us that Zenyatta is a happy, content horse.
Dear Zenyen,
Zenny has at least 6 or 8 foals to contribute to the TB gene pool.

Meanwhile, Brown Almighty, a disappointing fifth as the second choice in the Smarty Jones, has a severe lung infection, trainer Tim Ice confirmed.
“He scoped a five out of five,” Ice said of the stakes-winning son of Big Brown . Brown Almighty was making his dirt debut in the Smarty Jones after a successful 2-year-old campaign spent mainly in turf races.
“It was really frustrating because he never showed me any signs of it before the race,” said Ice. “We got him back to the wash stall and he coughed twice standing there. We scoped him and it was pretty severe.”
Ice said Brown Almighty would be treated with antibiotics. Next-race plans are on hold, but the Southwest Stakes or the Risen Star have not been ruled out, depending on how quickly the illness clears.
“We want to run in the Southwest, but it’s going to be a matter of how much time he needs,” said Ice.
Tri-Star Racing, Joe B. Denson, and Brent Gasaway own the good-looking chestnut colt, a winner of two of six starts with two seconds. Brown Almighty captured the Sunny’s Halo Stakes at Louisiana Downs last August. He finished the year with back-to-back runner-up efforts in the Sunday Silence Stakes and the Bourbon Stakes (gr. IIIT), and was ninth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT).

Dear Kathy R,
Left you a post on page 5.

Dear Sign: Checked it out – thanks!

Dear Janet,
Not sure if my comment in the thread of your lovely foal pictures

Did you know that KY-breds OXBOW and PAYNTER are genetic full brothers?
Neat right?!!
Here are pedigrees for OXBOW & PAYNTER

Thanks Keta
How neat. Oxbow ran a fabulous race.
carolinarkansas
they have different moms….both sisters to tiznow…do not see how they can be considered brothers…please explain.. half-brother-cousins maybe.. but that would be if they were human…I know horses are different but thought that all bro/sis relationships were dependent on the mom being the same
Keta
carolinarkansas
That is a direct quote from Kentucky Thoroughbred Association.
Horse bloodlines & human bloodlines are not quite the same.
Perhaps one of our pedigree specialists like Abigail or Ann Maree can
explain what KYTBA meant.
Hugs, Keta
Max
Keta
Max,
Thanks for clarification & additional tweet.
Like Carol, I was shaking my head–but having followed the pedigree
discussions thought there was a missing link I did not understand.
I never have and probably never will be an expert in pedigrees.
So, even the KYTBA can be give out wrong info.
Glad you caught this.
Hugs, Keta
Max
Keta
Max,
That is neat indeed!
Hugs, Keta
Max
Keta. Thanks for posting this tweet. I would have missed this connection. Here is a link with a photo of Ox. He sure looks like Paynter and, thanks to you, we now know why. Great work as always.

Horse left in starting gate recovers to win debut race [Updated]
By Eric Sondheimer Los Angeles Times January 20, 2013, 7:59 p.m.

What an absolute joy it was to meet young 16 year old Jose Delgaldillo at Santa Anita last year! He was there are few times to see his father ride (jockey). He said many times that he could not wait to begin riding and one day be in a race with his dad and whip his butt. A real true typical teenager. I am sure in the one year he has matured much! He was so playful and endearing … quite the jokester and so great to be around. He did not do so bad his first time out – finished fourth. I wish him the very best of luck on his riding career, sweet boy. Nice dad too.

I hope after the Zenyatta/Tapit baby is weened, that Ann will make arrangements to bring Zenyatta back home. Maybe she can hang out at the barns, so she can be happy with all the excitement again. Hope this one is a filly, one of each. Missing and loving the Queen, Lisag
zenyen
We can see in these pictures Lane’s End and the Mosses are gracious enough to share with us that Zenyatta is a happy, content horse.
signofthetimes
Dear Zenyen,
Zenny has at least 6 or 8 foals to contribute to the TB gene pool.
Not sure she will get back to California as she is from KY, will have to
See if The Mosses build a farm or rent a huge stable for her children and
Grand children ???

BROWN ALMIGHTY UPDATE
Excerpt from The Blood-Horse Updated: Wednesday, January 23, 2013 3:38 PM
See Link Below
IT).
