Renee’s Titan wins the Santa Ynez Stakes.
Racing last of seven 3-year-old fillies through a half-mile, Renee’s Titan launched a sustained rally along the rail to stun champion Beholder in the $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes (gr. II) (VIDEO) on Jan. 21 at Santa Anita Park.
In her first start since winning the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) at Santa Anita and just days after being named champion 2-year-old filly of 2012, Beholder was sent off as the 1-5 favorite in the 6 1/2-furlong Santa Ynez. The return to sprinting didn’t seem to bother Beholder, who rated off a hot pace and drew even with early leader Dawn’s Choice in mid-stretch.
But as Beholder—highweight at 123 pounds—dueled late with a resilient Dawn’s Choice, Renee’s Titan continued her sustained rally along the rail; a move she would continue even after jockey Tyler Baze lost the whip in upper stretch. Under energetic handling, Renee’s Titan would grab the lead late and open a three-quarter-length advantage at the wire.
“I just sat on her and was as patient as I could be,” Baze said. “I didn’t care how far back we were but by the 3/16ths pole I knew it was time to get going. I skimmed the rail there, lost my stick, but she was running so I just did whatever I could to keep her going.”
Zillah Reddam’s Renee’s Titan completed 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.14 to secure the first stakes victory of her career. The 3-year-old Bernstein filly returned $43.80 to win, $7.80 to place, and $4.20 to show. Beholder edged Dawn’s Choice by a nose for second, returning $2.20, $2.10, and Dawn’s Choice returned $3.20 to show.
After the race, Renee’s Titan dumped Baze but horse and rider were uninjured.
“She’s done it before, but mostly in the mornings,” Baze said. “She dumped Kevin Krigger in a workout, so we keep company with her, always, always. She’s so tough to train, we keep switching horses, not the same horse every morning, because she’ll run them out. We do what we have to. She likes to be athletic, so be it.
“She’s got a few problems in her head, but she can really run when she holds it all together and she proved that today.”
Trainer Doug O’Neill claimed Renee’s Titan for Reddam out of her winning debut in a maiden claiming race on June 21 at Betfair Hollywood Park. After showing promise in that race, she has twice placed in stakes races, including a runner-up finish in her only other career dirt start—the Phil D. Shepherd Stakes at Fairplex Park. She also rallied strongly in that race.
Richard Mandella, trainer of Spendthrift Farm’s Beholder, said it appeared the daughter of Henny Hughes tired a bit in the stretch. He plans to point her to the $250,000 Las Virgenes Stakes (gr. I) March 2 at Santa Anita.
Michael House’s Dawn’s Choice earned her first stakes placing after registering an opening quarter mile in :21.14 and half-mile in :43.67 and continuing well to the wire.
Bred in Kentucky by Mr. and Mrs. John Liviakis, Renee’s Titan is the first foal out of the Tiznow mare Titan Queen. John Liviakis started Renee’s Titan in her winning debut, when she was claimed for $50,000.

Eased in the $400,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Classic Stakes Jan. 19 at Gulfstream Park, Mucho Macho Man came out of that 1 1/8-mile race for Florida-breds in good order.
Trainer Kathy Ritvo acknowledged she was concerned after the three-time grade III winner was eased after being sent off as 2-5 favorite in the race that would be won by Ron the Greek in 1:49.19 on a sloppy track. Ritvo said the 5-year-old Macho Uno horse came out of the race in good order and was able to return to his regular training schedule at Gulfstream.
“He went out this morning,” Ritvo said Jan. 21. “He’s feeling great.”
Ritvo concluded that the sloppy track was the reason for the uncharacteristic performance of Reeves Thoroughbred Racing’s Mucho Macho Man. In his only other career start on a sloppy track, Mucho Macho Man finished a troubled seventh in the 2011 Belmont Stakes (gr. I).
“I thought it was the bumping coming out of the gate, but I guess it might have been the track,” Ritvo said.
DAILY RACING FORM: RAMON DOMINGUEZ SHOWING IMPROVEMENT

Aqueduct: Dominguez shows improvement but is still in intensive care
By David Grening
Barbara D. Livingston
Jockey Ramon Dominguez is closing in on a career milestone of 5,000 victories. He has 4,984.
Three-time Eclipse Award-winning rider Ramon Dominguez, who suffered a slightly displaced skull fracture in a spill at Aqueduct last Friday, showed some improvement over the weekend, but remained in the intensive care unit of Jamaica Medical Center Hospital on Monday.
Updates on the rider’s condition have been limited. On Sunday, Dominguez’s agent, Steve Rushing, in a text to the New York Racing Association, said Dominguez is “slowly progressing each day. He’s talking a little bit more today.”
On Saturday, Rushing said that doctors expressed some optimism in Dominguez’s progress, saying, “They’re optimistic of a full recovery.”
It was unclear what that meant as far as Dominguez’s ability to return to the saddle.
Rushing said there has been no timetable given for Dominguez to be moved out of the intensive care unit or when he could be released from the hospital.
Dominguez, 36, was injured Friday when his mount, Convocation, clipped heels with Sovereign Default approaching the top of the stretch in the seventh race. Convocation fell, hurling Dominguez hard to the inner track. A trailing horse, Straight Fax, hurdled over Convocation, and when he landed may have struck Dominguez in the head.
Dominguez also suffered a badly bruised right eye as a result of the spill.
On Saturday, Dominguez won his third straight Eclipse Award as North America’s leading jockey. In an awards ceremony at Gulfstream Park, fellow jockeys and Eclipse finalists John Velazquez and Javier Castellano picked up the award on behalf of Dominguez.
Dominguez, who has been the leading rider on the New York Racing Association circuit the last four years, is closing in on a career milestone of 5,000 victories. He has 4,984, which ranks him 27th on the all-time list, and his purse earnings of $191,563,097 place him 14th all time.
In 2012, Dominguez set a North American earnings record of $25,582,252. He won 341 races from 1,398 mounts, despite missing nearly two months because of a neck injury in the spring and a foot injury in the fall.
Thanks, Barbara. And for any who is wondering, a Dumpling with a capital D is ANYONE who loves Zenyatta. Kathy R, I don’t think this caught your eye, so I am reposting especially for you.

Dear Trina: Blessings to you! Must say, I just love America the Beautiful – was interested to learn that the author composed the words after standing on Pikes Peak, Colorado – having stood there also I can understand why the view inspired her so. You folk are so lucky to have wonderful music relating to the nation – from the Battle Hymn, My Country Tis of Thee (sorry Sheena, know it’s also Her Maj’s tune) and of course the national anthem itself. Wish we had music of that calibre down here. Our national song is about a bloke who pinches sheep and then commits suicide because the law is after him!! Hugs, KathyR.

APPROXIMATE ZENYATTA DUE DATE
Announced Zenny in foal, May 8, 2012 – assume this is the 45 day US, as 30 was
preliminary last foaling.
Breeding around March 24, 2012; Approximate foaling date – February 28, 2013
Today Zenny is approximately 300 days in foal.
Thank you, once again for sharing these pix with us! I love the fact that I can relive the past by watching the race mare Zenyatta on my dvd and youtube and still keep in touch with the broodmare Zenyatta here. Pleasure in looking back AND looking ahead!
Sheena mentioned the all gray handicap race at Newmarket (grey to the Brits, thanks to Trina I now understand why). Here is a link to a video of the post parade of entries. When I see this, I think of our Tasty, Zazu, Awesome Maria and other US gray horses who would look very good racing together. The video brings a smile to my face. Hope others enjoy.
@Sandy (Ohio). Thought of your question about that foal when I saw so many variations in the color of gray.
@Janet Newman. Thinking too of a possible gray 13Z.
Sign. Yes, I do recall this. But if the stallion directory is British it would be the spelling grey as Trina pointed out in explaining the difference. I can only keep so many rules in my head or I might risk burning out my few precious brain cells. LOL!

Sign. Our Abigail from Montreal has an interesting article on Nijinsky on her website. In it she has written a few paragraphs on his mother, Flaming Page. She outlines her pedigree with FP’s connections to Bull Lea and Calumet Farm. Flaming Page was a formidable race horse in her own right, and gave her looks to Nijinsky who was a taller horse than his sire. Speaking of gray, Northern Dancer’s dam sire was one of the most famous of the grays, Native Dancer. His nickname was the Gray Ghost.
Terry Crow
Should have retired undefeated. Eric Guerin gave Native Dancer one of the all time bad rides in the Derby.
Vicki B. I had read about this race some time ago, but it was Sheena who recently drew it to my attention again. Those Brits have some great ideas.
Kathy R.
Dear Max: Think my comment got left on the previous blog: we have an all grey race during the Melbourne Cup Carnival – it’s run on Ladies Day and is just lovely to watch. Will try and sniff out some pics. of the race. Cheers!
Max
KathyR. I would love to see any photos or videos of your race.
So many variations of Grey/Gray. Wonder if our little new Z/T foal will be a gray. It’s amazing how they are born a dark, almost steel gray and then lighten to almost pure white as they mature. That was the case with Unbridled’s Song. Hugs, JB
@Dear Pati–I just saw the post about Tessa. We have missed you here, and I am praying for this sweet girl. It does make us want to chew nails, doesn’t it. It is so unnecessary, and kind people, like you and your friends at the rescue, have to try to pick up the pieces. Please keep us posted. Praying for Tessa and all of you who love her. Will send a small donation. Hugs.
I also see what you are seeing in her eyes, happiness, contentment and peace.
Just so glad she is sooo happy. And of course looking forward to her

Thanks for the amazing grey/gray horse video. I wouldn’t have recognized that some of them were this particular hue :-) The difference in the manes and tails was striking as well. Wonder how our Tasty is doing (i still think that maybe she didn’t “get” that the foal might look like her eventually).

I’ve been having some dreadful computer woes, so my posts have been few anywhere since shortly after Christmas. I think it’s going to take at least another 3 weeks before I’m back to technical normality! A little frustrating since so much that we do depends on our trusty computer.
That being said, I wanted to wish all my friends here the very best of everything in 2013. I just love that each new year is christened by the arrival of the foals and unless I’m mistaken, Rachel should be due any time now. Like OUR ZENNY I think Rachel’s due date is similar to 2012. Just imagine — a Rachel-Bernie filly! And then there’s Life Is Sweet and Zenny to look forward to.
Just love these shots of Z-12 — he continues to look a lot like Zenny when she was a youngster. But I am wondering if he’ll get at least a little of that distinctive Bernie semi-dish face as he natures. And Zenny sharing an apple with the quite wonderful Donna (I always think of her fowling videos when we were nervously pacing & waiting the arrival of Z-12)……Zenny ‘s face is so adorable as she focuses on the apple!
Hope that everyone is doing well. It’s minus 40 here in Montreal….ugh!
Love &. Hugs to All and kisses to my Zenny and her feisty boy!
In regards to Z12 and Bernie’s dished face, it has been pretty clear from the day he was foaled that Z12 takes after his granddam V. Both V and Zenyatta have a long head with the tall ears. Maturity is not going to change that in 12Z. At this point I just keep my fingers crossed that maturity will balance out Z12’s neck to shoulder imbalance.
Best hope is to see if Z13 proves to have some of Tapit’s refinement.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Zenyen,
I think he will balance out, they usually grow separate parts before the
whole body is put together. He should be on the correct developmental
curve. Great points !!!
Not sure if Bernie has a very emphatic “stamp” to his foals? Any thoughts?
Zenny sure seems to. We will have to see with the Tapit, baby. Tapit really does seem to ” stamp” his. Love that term Abigail (stamp).
zenyen
To be honest I have worried about Z12’s front end assembly since he was born. He is still over at the knees ewe necked and weak in the throat latch.
I’ve read where part of what has made V such a spectacular broodmare is she passed on a big shoulder to her get. My hope is that Zenyatta has passed this big shoulder on to Z12 and that might be enhancing the weakness in his neck and it is not as bad as it looks in his pictures..
After all he doesn’t have to win any beauty contests so long as he’s got that reach and stride that comes from the shoulder.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sign and Zenyen:

Oh dear! Excuse the “natures” –should be “matures” and the “fowling” should be “foaling.” LOL! Using my son’s iPad but at times my fingers are missing their mark!
Happy birthday greetings from me, Delrene! Barbara Grimaldi also asked me to convey birthday greetings from her to you. I’m working on a new poem for you, but in the meantime, here’s the poem from last year. Update for all: Delrene’s son is now home in the States.
A Birthday Poem for Delrene
(January 22, 2012)
When her parents together did team
To name Delrene,
They did seek
A name, personal, unique
And fine,
Which would the whole world tell
Of their love for their precious new belle.
Since her mom was Irene
And her father was Dell,
They their own names did combine
To show right from the start
And for all time
How their two hearts
With hers
Did sweetly intertwine.
Fast forward to the last decade
And the extraordinary Rose Parade
When the son to whom she’d given birth
Flew
The famed B-2—
The svelte Stealth bomber—
Worth nearly twice its weight in gold,
I’m told—
Over the Rose Parade crowd,
And she heard his name read aloud.
’Twas for her
One of the greatest thrills on Earth
And her heart with pride nearly burst.
But today
Her heart’s filled with worry–
Her dearest wish
Is for the work of her son
In a foreign land
To soon be done,
And that this dear family man,
Serving still in Afghanistan,
Soon be able to hurry
Safe and sound
Back to home base,
Found
In Missouri.
How she his safe return will relish!
Dearest Delrene, we with you pray
For that blessed day!

Aqueduct: Dominguez shows improvement but is still in intensive care

Jockey Ramon Dominguez is closing in on a career milestone of 5,000 victories. He has 4,984.
Three-time Eclipse Award-winning rider Ramon Dominguez, who suffered a slightly displaced skull fracture in a spill at Aqueduct last Friday, showed some improvement over the weekend, but remained in the intensive care unit of Jamaica Medical Center Hospital on Monday.

In 2012, Dominguez set a North American earnings record of $25,582,252. He won 341 races from 1,398 mounts, despite missing nearly two months because of a neck injury in the spring and a foot injury in the fall.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

And here on Z’s site, let’s make that “with DUMPLINGHOOD and brotherhood/ From here to overseas!” (Thinking especially of you, Kathy R and Sheena!)
Kathy R.

LOL!

Great video, Max.
All those different colors of gray/grey.
Max

So many variations of Grey/Gray. Wonder if our little new Z/T foal will be a gray. It’s amazing how they are born a dark, almost steel gray and then lighten to almost pure white as they mature. That was the case with Unbridled’s Song. Hugs, JB

Good morning Dumplings!
Love &. Hugs to All and kisses to my Zenny and her feisty boy!
zenyen
Abigail,
In regards to Z12 and Bernie’s dished face, it has been pretty clear from the day he was foaled that Z12 takes after his granddam V.

Happy birthday greetings from me, Delrene! Barbara Grimaldi also asked me to convey birthday greetings from her to you. I’m working on a new poem for you, but in the meantime, here’s the poem from last year. Update for all: Delrene’s son is now home in the States.
A Birthday Poem for Delrene
(January 22, 2012)
When her parents together did team
To name Delrene,
They did seek
A name, personal, unique
And fine,
Which would the whole world tell
Of their love for their precious new belle.
Since her mom was Irene
And her father was Dell,
They their own names did combine
To show right from the start
And for all time
How their two hearts
With hers
Did sweetly intertwine.
Fast forward to the last decade
And the extraordinary Rose Parade
When the son to whom she’d given birth
Flew
The famed B-2—
The svelte Stealth bomber—
Worth nearly twice its weight in gold,
I’m told—
Over the Rose Parade crowd,
And she heard his name read aloud.
’Twas for her
One of the greatest thrills on Earth
And her heart with pride nearly burst.
But today
Her heart’s filled with worry–
Her dearest wish
Is for the work of her son
In a foreign land
To soon be done,
And that this dear family man,
Serving still in Afghanistan,
Soon be able to hurry
Safe and sound
Back to home base,
Found
In Missouri.
How she his safe return will relish!
Dearest Delrene, we with you pray
For that blessed day!
Happy, happy birthday, and many happy returns!
