JAG,

I was just sharing my thoughts on some of the horses I have seen that have been rescued from abuse and real mistreatment. They’re temperament is affected, but if they are by nature good tempered, they will respond to kindness and patience. Some horses, as you have said, are just bad tempered; whether through genetics or following the example of their dams as foals.
As far as placing human emotions on horses; even in human children, temperament is mostly genetics and part the example of their parents. Hugs, JB
You are both so sweet. Thank you for your kind words.
Papa Charlie is a real gentle boy. From the people I have been able to talk to who knew him as a foal, a yearling and all grown have all said he was a sweet tempered horse from the beginning. Angela said that to me from the day she led him off the van onto her farm.
I think he was lucky to have a very good beginning and good treatment at McMahon Farm in Saratoga where he was born and then he was lucky to have the same breeder/owner from his Maiden race to September of 2011 when he was claimed. He raced for his new trainer from October 2011 until 9/17/12. We purchased him and got him to Angela’s on 9/26/12. She was able to ride him for the first time only three days later. So I think he’s just one of those easy, even tempered boys.
He has his moments when he is miffed because he wants to go outside, but Angela has to keep them all in due to severe weather. He’ll whinny, paw the ground and sulk. He can be very funny.
Gigi was very anxious and restless the first day she came to Angela’s. She was off her feed and uncomfortable with the abscess. She has calmed down and is eating well. She also is very sweet tempered. The abscess is still draining and Angela is still treating it. She is going to have x-rays done because it’s taking longer than we hoped to heal. It’s in a bad place on the Coronet Band. Hugs, JB

Well, it is certainly very interesting!
So then Z got her attitude from Vertigeneux, all those tricks up her one leg:) Heehee. Well, the list of “Reds” or chestnuts winning the triple is interesting , so far 6 out of 11 were chestnuts and the list ended in the 40’s for now. So the chestnuts are dominant so far. I’m just amazed at the expressiveness of horses.

What is the difference between brown & bay? I thought bay was brown?
Zenyen
You can look up the exact genetic definition of the difference between bay and brown but for the sake of simplicity.
Bay = body hair is lighter brown/red while the points (mane, tail, legs from the knees, hocks down) are definitively black.
Brown = Body hair and points are nearly identical in color. Differentiated from black, due to some ‘tan’ on the muzzle and or the area behind the shoulder or flank.
Zenyatta for instance is noted as drkb/br on her pedigree, meaning Dark Bay or Brown, because her points and her body color nearly match. 12Z will probably be likewise noted as drkb/br.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
12Z is already listed as dark bay/brown.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Bay is two colors, light body with a black mane and tail (Barbaro)
and dark bay, darker brown body with a black mane and tail.
Brown is just all brown; Seattle Slew, Stay Thirsty.
Often called a “Plain Brown Horse”, but definitely
not so.
People often like a “flashy” horse, that moves elegantly
and has flashy coloring, white feet or nice white blaze.
The flashy horses are often well liked in the show ring
by judges. But don’t have to be flashy looking to race.
Max
Stay Thirsty like his sire Bernardini is listed as dark bay/brown. Thirsty also has white stockings on his back legs and a star on his forehead very much like 12Z. He is royally bred and is not plain in any way. He was recently described by a visitor to Ashord as looking “grand.”
Actually I misunderstood the list posted before mine, thought it only went as far as the 40’s, boy is my face red, there were only 11 triple, period to this day, so the previous list did say that. :)
Okay, I got the bay v brn thing.
Interesting that no greys or white or true black horses on the list. I know Giacomo was a grey. Won the Kentucky Derby! Beautiful horse, his tail went all the way to the ground.
Judy Berube’s horse is named Charlie, reminds me of a charleyhorse. Haha. Oh, and the Texan kid’s name is Caleb Moore. He’s still hanging in there. Thanks
Louise Castello
Great post Sign. Boy, Seattle Slew was anything but “plain”. Loved seeing him on his toes in his little war dance! Just stunning!

I learn so much from being around Charlie and the horses on Angela’s farm and I still have a lot more to learn. It’s just a privilege to be able to observe them up close. Never in my life did I think I would have this opportunity.
Thanks to my EAN family, I am able, at 70 years old, to fulfill a lifetime dream of learning about and actually being around horses and not just reading about them in books. And thanks to you and other Z’sters and Dumplings on Z’s Blog for sharing your knowledge and expertise on horses with all of us here. Love and Hugs, JB

I am jumping right in once again, so don’t know all that’s been posted in past 24 hours, BUT a track friend (not a Dumpling–there are few , although they know about MOI, so they know about US)–anyway, she just emailed me her regrets regarding Rightful and said there was a “small” article in Sunday’s FORM about him and how he is doing. Really, guys, I cannot believe I did not see that!!! I paged through the FORM and read various things, but that did not jump out at me! I just slapped myself across the head…twice. Rod gave it to friend of his who likes to read DRF after the fact–he likes to go over horses PP’s and such, even after they’ve raced. Rod will call him tomorrow to see if he still has that edition. I did not try on internet yet–maybe I will right now and see what’s what. In the past, I have had poor luck getting into DRF unless someone else provided a link.
I want to chat about other things as well, such as Barbaro but will take my leave for a while. Hope I don’t fall asleep, as sometimes I do, once with my head over (but not on top of) the computer! JEEZ! Y’all carry on without me–for now!
So very glad that Rightful had a small article.
No matter what the level or ability the TB racehorse
has they should be honored and treated specially as they give us
humans such pleasure.
Is there someone in your owner’s group that is going to retrain
him?
Ok, got into several pages of DRF, various recent dates, but not what I was looking for. We’ll see what transpires.
Want to be sure to wish Joy K a happy birthday, along with Rachel Alexandra. Nice poem, once again Trina! (Did I write this before–not sure! If so, can be said twice!)
Sign, thanks for your comment of my being Head Flusher! What an experience! :-) And good to hear you saw “The Impossible.” Liked your comments. I had thought that Gary Stevens was still going to be on HRTV now and then, but not sure. He said–in a quote somewhere-that they have been very good to him, about his scheduling.
Keta-NICE photo of Paynter! (previous page, I think.)
Really sorry to hear about Rapid Redux— and now Jackson Bend with his problems.
Trina, liked the cartoons of Zenny and Rachel!! Good for a NICE smile.
Judy B and others: interesting about horses’ temperaments!
Ann NC–thanks for your Rightful comments. Made me smile about the boots.
Auntie Judy, thanks for that video. :-)
In one of those DRF pages I read that Action This Day has been sold to stand in Peru.
I know it’s late in many parts of our world, but since it still the 29th here I would like to quote myself: USA Today printed a Letter to Editor I wrote back then. They headed it: Doctors and owners did right by Barbaro in letting him go.
My letter: I live in California and was never physically near Barbaro, but I feel as though I have touched, petted and nuzzled him. We all hoped for the miracle that was not to be. (I was referencing one of their editorials of a few days before.)
I feel comfort in the fact that Dr. Dean Richardson and Barbaro’s owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, knew what was good for Barbaro, and that they would do the colt no harm. Until he couldn’t have what we all wanted–long term quality of life–Barbaro was treated with the utmost skill, care, compassion and love.
Of course I cried when I learned the news. After all these months of concern and hoping against hope, I still feel those closest to Barbaro did the right thing from the beginning.
Let his legacy live on in our continued care, compassion and love for all of the horses. Let’s do right by Barbaro’s fighting spirit. Thanks also to trainer Michael Matz and jockey Edgar Prado. Barbaro, you really were some horse.
What a very lovely post about Barbaro.
During that time I was riding my Jethro, who looked so very
much like Barbaro. Followed the story so very closely
everyday and really feel The Jacksons and Dean Richard’s
did their best to “save” Barbaro, who wanted to be saved.
Everyday they were in tune with his spirits and whether he
had a zest for life and he did until the end. They knew
when he no longer displayed those feeling that he wanted
to be with the angels and they granted him that wish.
His legacy will live on as a KY Derby winner, a fighter and
a pioneer for the treatment of TB injuries and laminitis.
As Ruffians contribution made after her breakdown.
The water recovery tank after surgery for horses came
about after she thrashed around waking up for anethesia
and tore of the cast the vets had placed after her surgery.
These wonderful thoroughbreds give us such pleasure
and are so very speical.
Glad to see you are enjoying the stablemates.
Welcome to the Foaling Barn Stalkers as we have
officially named ourselves after losing lots of sleep
last year. With 2 extra cams, oh boy, am I in trouble now!

Have seen a couple of your posts on stablemates, what a very fun
thing to do for fans by Winstar. Love the name Foaling Barn
Stalkers. You are right those yearling are hard to catch.
And the foaling are just so special.
Dear Janet, my family is starting to wonder about me watching the cams. Someone commented at Winstar that they wanted to get two more computers to watch all three cams at once. Sounds great to me. It is just so addicting, so I guess I am a “stalker” as well. Yay!
What a very cute photo and a very royal pair. Midday looks very happy and her
colt has the cutest look. Galilieo and then Frankel, she is very special.
Thank you for the beautiful photo of Midday and her Galileo foal. Next she will be visiting Frankel (Galileo’s Son). What a legacy these two wonderful stallions are creating. Can’t wait to see how Frankel’s babies fare at the races. Something to look forward to. Hugs, JB

Just one win from career victory 5,000, a healing wrist will keep jockey Calvin Borel from nailing down that victory this week.
Borel was told by his doctor Jan. 29 that he needs at least one more week to heal his broken wrist. He will not be riding this week at Oaklawn Park, according to his longtime agent Jerry Hissam. Three-time Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Borel was heading into Oaklawn’s opening weekend just one victory shy of his 5,000th career win, a milestone reached by only 24 other riders, when he injured his wrist in a starting gate mishap during morning training Jan. 8.
Borel will return to his doctor early next week in hopes of riding the Feb. 7-10 race week. Oaklawn and the city of Hot Springs plan to distribute commemorative trading cards the moment Borel reaches 5,000 wins. The cards will be free to anyone at Oaklawn on the day he wins his 5,000th race.

Our Money had a new farrier visit yesterday (other one retired). We were a little apprehensive, as a storm was coming up, winds over 30mph, dark clouds, metal things in the barn clanging and banging, he had been held back in his stall, etc., but he did fine and the farrier said, “he has good feet” (something every horse lover longs to hear.) Hugs to all.

Dear Sunny B,
Great research.

Thanks

Great post Sign. Boy, Seattle Slew was anything but “plain”. Loved seeing him on his toes in his little war dance! Just stunning!

Dear Judy B,
Environment is can greatly affect temperment as you pointed out.
And you brought out so many very important points that can
influence that as well.
Thanks for your very insightful post on the subject.

Dear Sign and Z Fans:

Dear Anne,
So very glad that Rightful had a small article.

Dear Anne,
What a very lovely post about Barbaro.

That was a great letter Anne.

@ Louise Castello and Sign,
Glad to see you are enjoying the stablemates.
Welcome to the Foaling Barn Stalkers as we have
officially named ourselves after losing lots of sleep
last year. With 2 extra cams, oh boy, am I in trouble now!

Dear Janet,
Have seen a couple of your posts on stablemates, what a very fun
thing to do for fans by Winstar.

Yay!

Calvin Borel

RIP dear Barbaro. I remember the queasy feeling I got when I heard the news. Always will.
@Anne from Paramount–thanks for letting us know about Rightful’s press notice. Please do keep us posted.
