Happy Wednesday!
Alys took these great photos of Zenyatta playing in her paddock. We think she looks especially beautiful set against the snowy Lane’s End landscape.
Team Z and the staff at Lane’s End are getting ready for the arrival of this year’s foals. Accordingly, we’d like to invite the next round of questions for our “Ask The Experts” column. Questions related to the foaling process will be considered first, but all questions are welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Edit: We have receieved so many great questions from all of you! Submissions are now closed for the time being. If you didn’t get a chance to ask your question, don’t worry, there will be more opportunities in the future.
Some of you have recently asked about the Zenyatta Shop. Our apologies, the Shop is closed at this time. If you have any outstanding orders or inquiries, please contact us by emailing info@zenyatta.com.

Churchill ‘Comfortable’ With Points System
By Tom LaMarra, The Blood-Horse Updated: Friday, February 8, 2013 9:50 AM
During a Feb. 7 podcast with The Blood-Horse, Churchill senior director of communications and media services Darren Rogers discussed the Derby qualifying system and its mission, as well as feedback–negative and positive–the track has received from the industry.
Rogers said Churchill realizes the system may de-emphasize 2-year-old, sprint, and turf races as lead-ups to the Derby. But the objective is to focus on dirt races at a distance of at least one mile, he said.
Rogers said the goal is to create interest and drama, particularly in the final six weeks before the May 4 Derby as horses vie for the highest points in key races. He said the system is devised to have a “regular season, regional finals, and regional semi-finals” before the championship: the Kentucky Derby.

HORSE RACING: Animal Kingdom to make 1st start of 2013
By Alex Brown Special to the Whig Posted: Thursday, February 7, 2013 9:26 pm
Animal Kingdom, the 2011 Kentucky Derby winner, will make his first start of the 2013 season on Saturday in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (Grade 1) in Hallandale Beach, Fla. It may also be his final race in North America.
If all goes well for the Graham Motion trainee, he will then embark on an enterprising global challenge featuring the Dubai World Cup in March and Royal Ascot in the United Kingdom in June, before retiring to stud in Australia.

Dear Keta and Z Fans:
Thank you so much for thinking of us here on the East Coast. They’re predicting 12 to 18 inches of snow for RI and Massachusetts and as much as 2 feet in some places. We really were overdue for something like this. The last doozy was 1978. So we’ve been lucky with our Winters for a very long time. Lola Mae and I will get through.
Talked with Angela this morning. I am concerned about Angela and PC, GG and all the other horses on the farm. Angela is worried that she will be left having to take care of all of them alone as her regular help probably will not be able to get to the farm for a few days. There’s 36 horses there to take care of. Lot of work for one person. Will be keeping in touch with her as long as I can keep my cell phone charged. Have a phone charger in my car so I can call my sister and Angela from time to time. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. 36 horses on your own is a lot of work. Hope that some helpers can get through to assist Angela. Glad at least that you are still posting as I have been thinking about you and others. When a snowstorm gets a name, it’s not good. Stay safe.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Yes, I’m hoping somebody can get to the farm by tomorrow night to help Angela.
This storm is a doozy. Haven’t had one as bad since 1978. Thanks for thinking of us. Hugs, JB

Dear Judy B and other Z fans in the path of Winter Storm Nemo,
Noon update from the weather channels, just beginning to snow in Boston.
Expected as you said Judy, 8-12 inches for RI. Boston, 12 to 18 inches.
Lots of mention of 1978 storm, which I vividly remember, but did not
realize that it spanned so far to the NE.
Glad you are safe with everyone taken care of. Thoughts and prayer so you

Alabama Stakes winner Questing retired
From: The Miami Herald By Sports Network Posted on Friday, 02.08.13
Champion filly Questing has been retired and will be bred in the spring. Owner Godolphin Racing made the announcement Friday morning.
The 4-year-old filly won the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old filly of 2012. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Questing won the Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama.
“These Eclipse Awards by themselves are great to have, but when you know the competition you are keeping, it just adds to the stature and prestige of this really great award,” Darley’s Jimmy Bell said after accepting Questing’s Eclipse Award. “We certainly want to congratulate Simon Crisford and all the Godolphin team, and particularly Kiaran McLaughlin for his professional and patient care and his workaholic staff. They do such a wonderful job.”
In her final race she suffered an eye injury during the running of the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic. This winter she underwent surgery for a hind ankle chip, but during her recovery developed a case of pneumonia.
Questing finished her career with four wins in 11 starts for $876,876.
She will be bred to 2006 Preakness champ and Eclipse Award winner Bernardini.

Thanks for the info Keta. I’m sad that she’s had to go through so much. Dear Zenny Fans, Dumplings and All,
May the angels keep us til morning,
May they guide us through the night,
May they comfort all our sorrows,
May they help us in daily contacts,
May they keep watch on our souls,
May they show us better ways.
May they guard us while you’re sleeping.
May they see you through your days.
May they show us new hopes.
May they still our every doubt.
May they calm our every fear.
May they hear us when we shout.
May the angels keep you til morning
More than this we cannot pray.
And if the angels ever fail us.
Then may God be there that day.
Amen

PAULICK REPORT: UPDATE ON RAMON DOMIGUEZ – this type of injury
is a very slow process, so glad he is not hurrying things up.
DOMINGUEZ: ‘I’M REALLY HAPPY WITH MY CURRENT CONDITION’
by Paulick Report Staff | 02.08.2013 | 5:19pm
In an interview with ESPN’s Barry Abrams, injured jockey Ramon Dominguez reports that he is doing well following a spill in January that left him with a skull fracture.
“Considering that I got hurt not too long ago … I’m really happy with my current condition,” he told Abrams on Friday’s In The Gate podcast.
Dominguez says he has little recollection of the accident or the days in the hospital immediately following the spill. Despite the seriousness of his injury, he also said he felt very little pain.
“I really was happy to see my family. My mother came from Venezuela the day after the accident … and my wife and kids were there,” said the Eclipse award-winning jockey.
Dominguez has been working hard on his rehabilitation exercises, which include memory and board games, and physical exercises like walking up and down stairs. He will meet with doctors next week to reevaluate his condition, but says he remains cautious until then and doesn’t want to push himself too quickly. While he looks forward to returning to riding, long-term goals like the Derby are “the last thing on my mind”.
When asked about the affect of the Aqueduct surface on his spill, Dominguez was adamant that there was no connection between the track’s much-scrutinized safety record and his horse’s fall.
“None. Absolutely none,” he said. “We are so fortunate to have a great racing surface at Aqueduct and also at Saratoga … of course I’m not a track expert but I’ve had the opportunity to race on so many race surfaces and winter racing doesn’t get any better than the surface that we have … there is no doubt in my mind that the racing surface is as safe as it can get.”
