Happy Wednesday!
Alys took these great photos of Zenyatta playing in her paddock. We think she looks especially beautiful set against the snowy Lane’s End landscape.
Team Z and the staff at Lane’s End are getting ready for the arrival of this year’s foals. Accordingly, we’d like to invite the next round of questions for our “Ask The Experts” column. Questions related to the foaling process will be considered first, but all questions are welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Edit: We have receieved so many great questions from all of you! Submissions are now closed for the time being. If you didn’t get a chance to ask your question, don’t worry, there will be more opportunities in the future.
Some of you have recently asked about the Zenyatta Shop. Our apologies, the Shop is closed at this time. If you have any outstanding orders or inquiries, please contact us by emailing info@zenyatta.com.

Dear Rachel Alexandra.
I send my prayers out to you so strongly. On my knees still. I pray you heal well with no fevers and continue each day to get better. This is a critical time. Power Up Rachel. I pray so hard too not only for your health but for your heart to ease with I know missing your new baby. I pray for the healing of your heart and with each day it will be better. Your beautiful little baby will be fine.
You know Rachel I have been praying to the good lord and so many of my special Angels to help you, but Rachel I forgot about me. I too am helping you sending you all my love and mega prayers for your return to good health. We as human beings can do so much and do good as faithful servants to help animals and humans. Prayer I think is one of the best ways. I am praying so hard that it can be Gods will for you to get well.
You let me see you in 2009. Do you remember, Steve Asmussensbarn in Louisville at Churchill. They told us before we went on the backside that we would not get to see you. The lady driving the van adamantly said we wouldn’t get to see you. Rachel there was not many people on the van, but a number of lady’s including me and a few gentlemen. Well once some of the lady’s got wind that the lady driving said we would not get to see you. One of the lady’s sitting across from me Said “Why the heck if she’s here can’t we see her” Then another lady said the same thing. Loud enought for our lady driver to here. Then one of the gentlemen said Up oh there’s a lot of women in this van that want to see Rachel……………….
I thought up oh, myself. There getting stirred up. Our driver said nothing.
A little bit on up the road I saw we were getting to Asmussens barn. I looked intently.
I saw you in the shed row. About the same time as I saw you. Our driver verygraciously saideveryone I think we hit good luck today. I think we are just seeing Rachel. And she pulled in close to the barn. We couldn’ get out but we were close and your groom brought you up and stood you still for a few minutes for us all to see each other. What a beautiful face you have. Just love you. They had just brought you back to Louisville. You were going to be retired now. Your next stop was to be a private farm. Well the rest is history. Rachel the next month when I got home found out I had Cancer. These moments that make up our life can never be forgotten. Love you always and hope the good lord will help me to see you again one day.
Get well my darling Rachel……
Oh, Rachel you becamethe main thing that I wanted to see that year. And it just worked out. Found out when you would be back to louisville and even though everyone told me I wouldn’ get to see you I did. I was in lexington, and called over to louisville and asked about you. They told me to come on over but they had to be honest I probably wouldn’t get to see you
Rachel I will always cherish getting to see you. Again I hope I can hopefull see you again one day. Love, Peggy

Peggy,
What a beautiful story. I have never seen Zenyatta or Rachel in person but feel as if they are part mine anyway. I did meet Secretariat, Riva Ridge, Easy Goer and many others. There is something so special in that moment when you see one of your equine heros. I pray God is walking in your life each day and your are doing well.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Shirlee
Thank you so much. Oh my Gosh, You have got some memories for a life time. Would have just loved to have seen those too that you have seen. You said it so perfectly. There is just something so special about that moment you see them.

Peggy (N). Your stories of your visits with horses are the best. I love reading them. This is like the Buddy story. Very enjoyable. Keep telling us these stories.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max,
I just couldn’t believe my eyes when I sawthe groom walking Rachel.
After our guide stopped the van she said he’ll come back around and we’ll get to see her. He did and stopped.
I think that guide must have felt a little overpowered when this man said loudly there’s a lot of women on here that want to see Rachel. Just too funny

Peggy N,
What a wonderful story that you shared with us.
Taking up room, hardly. This is a place to share
our stories, cry with each other and pray with and for
each other. I think Zenyatta would approve. It is one
thing to compare one great horse, Z to another great horse like RA, but
we here know that they are two very unique and wonderful
mares. What they accomplished on the racetrack will always
set them apart, but unite them in our hearts.
Love, hugs and prayers to all.

Thank you Peggy for sharing your time seeing Rachael and how you are praying for her to be well. So many people care and are praying for her.

Peggy, you certainly did not take up too much room. I enjoyed your post. I was lucky enough to see Rachel in October 2011 when she was pregnant with Taco. I got in to the last See Rachel of the year at Stonestreet. You’re so right, she has a very beautiful face. I’ve always loved her abbreviated blaze. It’s so distinctive. I got to pat her big belly and kiss her sweet face. I’ve been so worried about her these past few days. I know that there are a lot people out there praying for her. Thank you for sharing your story. Hugs, Debbie
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Debbie,
Thank you so much for sharing your story too. Would love to pet her and see her up really close like you did. Would love to get up to one of those visits with her. My moms health has gotten a lot worse so I haven’t gotten to go up in the last two years. Last time I was up was in 20l0. I do hope to get back, though.

Peggy (N) South Georgia:
With a beautiful story like that you can take up as much space as you would like, as far as I am concerned! I can feel the love you have for “Our Girl Rachel” I too had the incredible honor of meeting her on Sept 5, 2009 when she won the Woodward in Saratoga! What a magnificent sight she was with Calvin on her back! I will forever remember that day as I look at the beautiful framed picture signed by Calvin I have hanging in my living room. I too share your feelings about Rachel and the love you have for her I started to follow her because that is my sister’s name, and the first time I saw her run I was in love, I didn’t even care that she won the Preakness and we wouldn’t have a triple crown winner that year! Watching her race and win took your breath away! Even if she didn’t win she still took my breath away!
Peggy, I am glad you are here with us to tell this story, and I am glad that Rachel has brought you so much joy and strength to fight your fight. now we have to help her fight her fight,
May God watch over her and the angels protect her, and may she not see the Rainbow Bridge for many, many years.

Trina, thanks for posting these links. I never tire of watching Kari’s wonderful and inspirational videos. The “She” video is very special for me, because I introduced this song to Kari and asked her if she could do a video with it with Z, and of course, she did. As it turned out, Kari said that some of the words had particular meaning for her. I was so glad to have “met” Kari via YouTube and then on Facebook and here at Z’s blog. I wrote something in an early post by John Shirreffs on his YouTube channel, and Kari responded to that. From there, our online friendship grew, but our time together was all too short. We shared some private messages, and I have never met a more open, honest, passionate person than Kari. I could not believe it when she passed, as I somehow held out the hope that she would be able to overcome her battle, as I’m sure all who knew her also felt the same way. What an inspiration Kari has been to all who knew her, and her lasting legacy will no doubt be the wonderful video tributes to Zenyatta she has left us with. She passed her talent on to Ashton, and my heart goes out to you, Ashton. I remember the very first video that you put together and your mom was so proud of you! You were very proud to do something for your momma, as I recall. God bless you, Ashton, and God bless all of us who feel a sense of loss at this mournful time. I know Kari would want us not to be so sad, and perhaps in the not too distant future, her family and all who knew and loved her will be able to remember Kari more with smiles and less with tears. Hugs to all, especially to Ashton. God bless. Ann Maree

Cleverly Bred Midnight Lute Filly Becomes a Rising Star
Thoroughbred Daily News Updated: 6:12 PM ET
5th at SAX Msw ($56k) [6 1/2f] Winner: Midnight Lucky, f, 3 by Midnight Lute
Pegram, Watson & Weitman’s Midnight Lucky (f, 3, Midnight Lute–Citiview, by Citidancer), a $220,000 FTSAUG yearling acquisition by a team well acquainted with her pedigree, was hammered down to 4-5 favoritism, was the recipient of a head’s up ride from Rafael Bejarano and streaked home to take her debut by about eight lengths Saturday at Santa Anita. Forced to deal with the one hole for the unveiling, the steel gray filly broke alertly, but Bejarano allowed Swimmin Insunshine (Successful Appeal) to clear, allowing him to switch his mount out to stalk from the two path. Though she was always traveling like a winner, her cause was aided when the pacesetter called it a day approaching the lane, but Midnight Lucky was not for catching anyways, as she cleared off to win ridden out in 1:15.25 for the 6 1/2 furlongs.
The winner’s dam is a full-sister to Hookedonthefeelin, who carried Pegram’s red and yellow silks to a victory in the 1999 GI La Brea S. Hookedonthefeelin has also excelled in the breeding shed, as her first foal, Pussycat Doll–by Midnight Lute’s sire Real Quiet–won a trio of Grade Is for Pegram. She is also the dam of GI Malibu S. hero Jimmy Creed (Distorted Humor) and SW Funny Feeling (Distorted Humor).

Yeah, it too sad about RA’s post delivery health issues, according to the DRF Beautiful Ojos is the nurse mare and had to leave her own filly to be cared for by staff now, so RA’s filly has a mother. It isn’t possible for Ojos to nurse her own filly and RA’s? Some horses do have two foals and care for them at the same time, it’s rare, but it has happened. Has it not? Anyway I feel bad for Ojos filly. This is a sad situation.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sunny B.:
Yes, it is sad all the way around. Hugs, JB
SunnyB.
Is it right to do this to Ojos filly? Why would it be so bad to have RA’s filly hand- fed? Would that interfere with it’s racing ability? Is it because of the money, RA’s ranks higher than Ojos? Ojos isn’t a cheap horse. Thanks. I’m glad you made it thru the snow okay.
Zenyen
Sunny,
You said it at the beginning. This is a sad situation that simply does not have any magic bullet fix.
Different disciplines require different foundation in horses. It has been proven, time and again that hand rearing a horse destined for the track does not work. The foal does not get the ‘horsey’ lessons required to make a good race horse and Rachel’s filly is bred to run.
A horse destined for reining or for show jumping or another discipline where there is not the same level of competitive drive, head to head and eye to eye against another horse, does just as well in these other disciplines when hand reared. There was an article in Blood Horse just a month or so ago that discussed the psychological differences between how Zenyatta sized up the ‘herd’ and then ran at them, vs Ebby sizing up horse by horse and running by them. I wish I could find it because this article demonstrates how much ‘horsey’ behavior and body language and psychology goes into racing, not just physical talent. It is this a foal needs to learn from the beginning, from a mare.
The other disciplines, where there is more bond between horse and rider to begin with and not so much horse vs horse competitiveness, does not require the same lessons and so hand rearing is more successful.
There are a lot of sources for nurse mares and the sad fact is, not all of them are above board. However, Lands End last year with Tasty Temptations foal and Stonestreet have both made it clear to fans how they network for their nurse mares when required. Doing a little research (and staying away from the more hysterical rants) you can find message boards and networking media where farms will advertise “had a mare foal on such and such date, foal stillborn, mare available for nurse mare duties.” Something along these lines is what happened with the nurse mare for Tasty’s foal, she had lost her own.
Some nurse mares, like Ojos, they are professional nurse mares. They are bred to good QH stallions to produce a QH foal who has a destined job in his/her life (in this case reining). If Ojos’ services are required for a TB foal who has lost his/her mother, then Ojos goes to the TB foal and her baby is hand reared by people on a farm who are experienced with bottle raising foals.
Stonestreet would much rather have had Rachel raise her filly. No one wanted this situation to occur but the sad fact is, it happened. Stonestreet, from the information they gave, network with farms that are hyper vigilant about the needs of their nurse mare foals and strict on their care (Ojos was not released to Stonestreet until after HER filly got the necessary colostrum).

This is an interesting article. All I know is Zenny appeared to have above average intelligence, tremendous talent and heart and a very competitive spirit when on he track. It makes so much sense explained this way. I did not question Stonestreet but was a little bit curious why thoroughbreds are not “bottle fed” in these situations. Zenyen’s explanation made it so easy to understand why they use nurse mares. Thank you!

Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Ann,
Thanks for the link — quite a talented young jockey! Wishing him safe rides and lots of good luck!
I WAS hoping for that marshmallow world of snow! It was snowing big lovely flakes several times, but we got no coverage on the ground at all. Still, it was fun to drive around with flakes falling fast. If the ground had been cold…
Cheers!

Peggy, DebbieG, Girl Saratoga; Thank you for sharing these enlightening stories.
It is the most memorable and exciting part of ones life when you can see up close a special horse such as Rachel, Zenyatta, Secretariat and other greats.
Thought I’d see Rachel at Oaklawn coming up against our undefeated Queen!! But, they pulled her out of coming to Oaklawn because I believe they pushed her too much prior in other races. I was disappointed, but I recovered very quickly when I saw and touched Zenyatta!!! She was my love. I have since washed my hand though I was tempted not too!! hugs, Sally B
