Happy Wednesday!
Alys took these great photos of Zenyatta playing in her paddock. We think she looks especially beautiful set against the snowy Lane’s End landscape.
Team Z and the staff at Lane’s End are getting ready for the arrival of this year’s foals. Accordingly, we’d like to invite the next round of questions for our “Ask The Experts” column. Questions related to the foaling process will be considered first, but all questions are welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Edit: We have receieved so many great questions from all of you! Submissions are now closed for the time being. If you didn’t get a chance to ask your question, don’t worry, there will be more opportunities in the future.
Some of you have recently asked about the Zenyatta Shop. Our apologies, the Shop is closed at this time. If you have any outstanding orders or inquiries, please contact us by emailing info@zenyatta.com.

Unbeaten Black Caviar Sets Record in Comeback
By Myra Lewyn The Blood-Horse Updated: Saturday, February 16, 2013 9:29 AM
Demonstrating she still has the competitive fire that has made her a living legend, Black Caviar took her unbeaten record to 23 victories on Feb. 16 at Flemington Racecourse in Australia when winning her comeback from a long layoff in record time in the race named in her honor, the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Aus-I).
Piloted by regular rider Luke Nolen, Black Caviar exploded to the lead and cruised to a 2 1/2 length win over stablemates Moment of Change and Golden Archer while covering 1,000 meters (about five furlongs) in 55.42.The time eclipsed the previous record of 55.50 set by Special in the 1988 Lightning Stakes.
Black Caviar won the Lightning for an unprecedented third consecutive year. The victory marked her 13th win at the top level, equaling Sunline and Tie The Knot and ranking one short of record-holder Kingston Town.

Hi all Zsters! I can not remember who it was on this site that last year had indicated they had visited Mayberry Farms in Ocala, Fl. where Zenyatta was schooled.
She provided me with Jeanne Mayberry’s phone no. etc.
I did visit last year and had a wonderful time. They invited me back whenever I am back in Fl. I CAN NOT FIND MY INFO WITH JEANNE’S PH. NO. AS WELL AS THE DIRECTIONS JEANNE HAD GIVEN ME WHEN I HAD SPOKE LAST YEAR.
We are staying this year near Ocala and I would love to go again!
I have searched for Mayberry Farms and have had no success.

Hi there Z Dumplings!
I just picked this up on the Stonestreet site. They’ve received tons of questions about this from Rachel’s fans and I can’t believe their kindness in taking the time to respond. It has to be so hard for BB and the Stonestreet folks, coping with RA’s struggle as well as splitting up mother and foal forever.

Wow! This was a very informative article put out by Stonestreet Farm, kind of sad to hear they take the nurse mare’s foal from her and replace it with another foal? Her foal sure is a cutie pie! I am assuming that the nurse mare probably doesn’t know the difference between her foal and another being that they are together for such a short period of time? It was very nice of Stonestreet to tells us how this all works, and what the nurse mares name is too!

Nurse Mares: Important helpers in difficult situations
February 16, 2013: Lexington, KY
Nurse mares are never brought into situations that are ideal. They must act as a surrogate mother for a foal whose own mother is unable to care for it.
In fact, a nurse mare raised Rachel Alexandra when her dam, Lotta Kim, rejected her.
Rachel’s attachment to her own filly in the short time they were together, was deep and it is important now to support her surrogate, Miss Beutiful Ojos, as she steps into this difficult situation to raise that filly.
We have received many very natural questions about this process:

Who is the nurse mare?
Miss Beutiful Ojos is a quarter horse and trusted nurse mare who has performed this important job at Stonestreet before. Nurse mares are often quarter or draft horses, and it is imperative that they possess good nurse mare characteristics. Miss Beutiful Ojos, or “Ojos” for short, is both very sweet and a great milk producer, two of the most important nurse mare qualities.
In those difficult situations in which we have to call in a nurse mare, Stonestreet draws upon a very select network of farms we trust to provide well-tempered and disease-free mares, while ensuring proper care for the nurse mare’s foal as well.
If Rachel recovers, will her foal be returned to her?
No. Rachel’s filly has bonded with Ojos, and she now considers Ojos to be her mother. She will remain with her until she is weaned. It is important to respect the bond now created between Rachel’s filly and her surrogate.
Rachel’s condition remains serious and she will need her strength as she fights to recover. Even if she were able to return to her foal, her milk production would have ceased. It is again, not an ideal situation, but keep in mind Rachel was raised by a surrogate as well.
What will happen to the nurse mare’s foal?
Ojos is what you might call a “professional” nurse mare. She is very good at her job and provides an important service under very difficult circumstances.
The filly out of Miss Beutiful Ojos will be hand raised as a reining/cutting horse prospect.
In this situation the timing worked out well. Ojos had foaled a palomino filly on Wednesday. Rachel’s filly was hand fed until Ojos arrived on Thursday, only after her own palomino filly was able to get the ‘first milk’, or all-important colostrum from her own mother. This is something Ojos’ owner is very firm about.
We visited Ojos’ filly on Friday afternoon. She is being hand raised along with another foal whose mother is also a nurse mare. This little filly will be bottle, then bucket fed along with her stall mate. They are both nicely bred quarter horse foals and she is expected to be a reining or cutting prospect.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Especially Horses:
It is good to know that RA’s and Bernie’s little filly has bonded so well with Ojos. I am especially glad to know that Ojos little filly was able to get the colostrum from her mom that she needed and is now being bottle feed and happy and has another little foal for company. Thanks for sharing this news. Hugs, JB

Keta. Sadler’s Wells definitely resembles his sire, Northern Dancer. If you want to see where Bullet Train gets some of his looks, check out this painting of his dam sire, Danehill, a son of Danzig, himself a son of Northern Dancer. I give thanks to Miss Beutiful Ojos for so lovingly caring for little 13Rachel, and I give thanks that her own filly is also being cared for. “Miss Beutiful Ojos” is certainly a lovely name–“ojos” being of course Spanish for “eyes.” I admit I am a little puzzled by the eccentric spelling of beautiful–does anyone have the explanation?
