Happy Wednesday!
Alys took these great photos of Zenyatta playing in her paddock. We think she looks especially beautiful set against the snowy Lane’s End landscape.
Team Z and the staff at Lane’s End are getting ready for the arrival of this year’s foals. Accordingly, we’d like to invite the next round of questions for our “Ask The Experts” column. Questions related to the foaling process will be considered first, but all questions are welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Edit: We have receieved so many great questions from all of you! Submissions are now closed for the time being. If you didn’t get a chance to ask your question, don’t worry, there will be more opportunities in the future.
Some of you have recently asked about the Zenyatta Shop. Our apologies, the Shop is closed at this time. If you have any outstanding orders or inquiries, please contact us by emailing info@zenyatta.com.

Dear all: Just learned that Rachel A has had surgery at Rood & Riddle again. Her colon was bruised in the birth. Please pray for her, as they say her condition is serious. Does someone know how to set up a candle group? Hugs.

Barbara. Very sad and shocking news because Rachel looked so well. Prayers for a rapid recovery.

This just is so scary and heartbreaking, especially that the baby has gone to a nurse mare! I hope some of the horse experts on here can maybe explain this to all of us. Thank you for the candles, Trina, I will go there now. Praying hard for beautiful Rachel and the little filly!
Max
Louise. It is difficult to know exactly, but it looks like serious complications from the birth. Barbara Banke mentioned in the interview that Keta found that it took 3 men to deliver the filly. It appears not to have been an easy birth. The filly would have to be placed with a nurse mare because RA could not nurse and care for the foal while in surgery and recovery. The baby needs constant care and attention from her mother as a newborn. The nurse mare will do that. Pray hard for a recovery.
Louise Castello
Thank you Max. I am praying hard, for Stonestreet, Rachel, the little filly, the nurse mare, and everyone who loves Rachel. This is awful news.

Louise. It is awful. No sleep tonight.

A Valentine Poem for Animal Lovers
(February 14, 2013)
We thank God above
On this day of love
That He us animals does send
With whom we our lives can spend,
Companions who brighten any gloom
If we only make them room
In our homes and our hearts.
Throughout the year
They’ll ensure each day starts
With a moment of cheer.
Heaven does us bless
By letting us life share
With others
Who for us do care
And relieve life’s stress,
Be they human or not.
So, animal lovers,
Don’t forget
To show your pet
That you love them all a lot.
Nuzzle
Your horse’s soft muzzle!
Smooch
Your dear pooch!
Caress
The kitty who against you does press!
Be a loving Valentine
To your equine,
Your canine,
Your feline,
As I will be to mine.

Just such a treat always to see your poems! Zz hugs

A Valentine for Pets Now Gone
(February 14, 2013)
To those who have sadly departed
And left us behind, broken-hearted,
We send our undying love.
You, of whom we’re so fond,
For us now patiently wait
At the bridge beyond.
We draw renewed strength
From the deep belief
That our sorrow
Will find relief
On some tomorrow
When at length
Through divine fate
We will with you in love
Reunite.
We’ll have that thrill
In heaven above,
And our now heavy hearts WILL
Again be light.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Oh, Trina–what a kind thing to do. Thank you so much (That seems so inadequate!) Love you.

Sheena. Still in shock over Rachel. Terrible news. Praying for a recovery like our Paynter. Power up Rachel.
As for Frankel, I hope that all goes well for him. He’s definitely in demand.
Sounds like things are not working out too well for Tidal Bay, or Idle Bay as he is called by Denman. In some ways, I’m glad that he’s out of the Grand National. That is a very tough race, and my favorite part is when it’s over.

Rachel Alexandra in Recovery Following Surgery
Feb. 13, 2013: Lexington, KY
Stonestreet Farm shared earlier tonight via social media that Rachel Alexandra, 2009 Horse of the Year, was taken to Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic in Lexington, Kentucky late Wednesday when complications developed related to the birth of her Bernardini filly.
Rachel Alexandra underwent surgery to repair an area of bruising in her small colon, which was injured during foaling. Dr. Brett Woodie performed the surgery and Rachel is currently in recovery under the watch of Dr. Bonnie Barr. A full prognosis cannot be determined at this time, but her condition is serious.

Keta,
It’s great to have good news like this on such a sad news morning. My thoughts and prayers go out to Rachel, all her connections, veterinarians caring for her and for her wonderful filly.
Rachel seemed to be bonding beautifully with her foal, different from last year, and I think that just adds to the sadness of the situation.
Most important will be Rachel’s return to good health. She never has to be a mom again if it isn’t in her best interest. Healthy, happy mare is all she needs to be. Off to light more candles.
Sandy (NE Ohio)
Happy Valentines Day to Zenny and her Prince, Team Z, the gang at Lane’s End and to all of the very special people here on this blog who have become “the family we have chosen!”
Special thanks to Dawn for the beautiful card and to Trina for two beautiful poems and to everyone who has extended Valentine wishes.
It was a major shock to hear about Rachel Alexandra this morning – I know some of you have been “on this” since late last night. Thanks to those who set up candle sites (great minds). Prayers for her recovery – I know that she wants to get back to her little valentine filly.
Hope everyone has a great day Many ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to everyone!

Rachel Alexandra standing, but still ‘serious’ after surgery for foaling injury
Published: February 14, 2013 Updated 12 minutes ago
Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year, was able to stand but remained in serious condition Thursday morning after a damaged part of her small colon was successfully removed in surgery late Wednesday.
“Her condition remains serious; it’s going to be a long road,” said Amy Kearns, a spokeswoman for Stonestreet Farm, located on Old Frankfort Pike.
Rachel Alexandra was taken to Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic in Lexington when complications developed from the birth of her Bernardini filly, according to the farm’s statement released Wednesday night.
Rachel Alexandra woke up from anesthesia about 3 a.m. Thursday, Kearns said.

Such heartbreaking news about Rachel and her filly.
Positive thoughts for Rachel and for a complete recovery and for her team who I know will do everything for her. Also warm thoughts for the loving nurse mare who will now raise Rachel’s filly.
This is especially heartbreaking because you could see, in the pictures, how much Rachel loved and wanted to raise her baby.
