Happy Wednesday!
Alys took these great photos of Zenyatta playing in her paddock. We think she looks especially beautiful set against the snowy Lane’s End landscape.
Team Z and the staff at Lane’s End are getting ready for the arrival of this year’s foals. Accordingly, we’d like to invite the next round of questions for our “Ask The Experts” column. Questions related to the foaling process will be considered first, but all questions are welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Edit: We have receieved so many great questions from all of you! Submissions are now closed for the time being. If you didn’t get a chance to ask your question, don’t worry, there will be more opportunities in the future.
Some of you have recently asked about the Zenyatta Shop. Our apologies, the Shop is closed at this time. If you have any outstanding orders or inquiries, please contact us by emailing info@zenyatta.com.

Judy, Thank you for the information. Too bad those of us without HRTV have to wait until late March to see live racing.

It would be even better news if the races were going to be shown on a standard TV channel. NBCSports is still a “premium channel” for a lot of folks.

Black Cash back a winner after illness
Posted by: AAP Filled in: Australian Horse Racing | 13/2/2013 at 5:00pm
There were times when Gold Coast trainer Kelly Doughty thought Black Cash would lose his battle for life.
The four-year-old completed a remarkable comeback from a near-death experience when he won Wednesday’s Sky Racing Handicap (1500m) at Eagle Farm.

Keta. Thanks for this. This story is like Paynter. I think that Paynter lost a lot of weight during his ordeal but he also kept on eating as best he could. Black Cash must have a strong will to keep going like our Paynter. Nice to see that he’s racing again and winning. Power up Black Cash. Power up Paynter.

Barbara Wood (Texas)
Good morning, all! I just keep going back to that picture of the precious filly of Rachel’s. The picture of her lying in the straw after her first nursing was just the best…and the little heart on her forehead. Does anyone agree with me that RA is not only a better mother to her little ones than Lotta Kim was to her, but that (to me) she also seems happier than she was when she was forced to change trainers? She seemed to lose heart for racing toward the end.
@Bernie–you are quite the guy and are very popular among the ladies. I know you are giving it your all–lol!
@Zenny–you know I have adored you from the moment I saw you, and you are and always will be dear to my heart, but your baby has a tough act to follow after Rachel’s. When does the pacing officially begin? In about 3 weeks or so?
Darlene Daniels
Good Morning Barbara,
LOL, I feel we have different views about the already born and upcoming births. To me, Rachel’s (whom I love and adore very much) are like second cousins, but Zenyatta’s offspring are like my horse grandchildren. When 12Z was born, I was showing off pictures of him like he was family. I was so proud, and still am. I do love Rachel also and congratulate her on her beautiful 140 pound daughter. And yes, I agree she does seem to be a very happy mother. Bless her heart.
Zenyen
Regarding Rachel,
I do think she looks absolutely calm, relaxed and doting towards her filly vs the first pictures we saw with Taco. She had a rough first foaling with Taco but I get the feeling things were much easier for her (even though the filly is 15lbs heavier!) this time around and they both look so sweet together.
But in regards to Rachel’s racing days. I do not think Steve A, was the problem. I will always contend that the Woodward, though a gritty gutty performance is what broke Rachel’s desire to race. Much like how Rags to Riches put in that amazing, guttsy performance in the Belmont against Curlin and then never raced again.
Every time I watch Rachel’s Woodward and look at the fractions I get chills. They dogpiled her in that race, with one colt/horse going after her and pushing her through suicide fractions, only to burn out himself and then another took his place. She was ‘run at’ 4 times and they still didn’t get by her. In fact 3 of the 4 placed either last or close to last and I never heard anything more from them (in terms of racing or winning after the Woodward).
Leslie R.
Rags to Riches raced again after her Belmont win. On 9/15/07, she finished second in the Gazelle Stakes at Belmont Park to Lear Princess. Xrays after the race showed that she had a hairline fracture in her right front pastern but she was expected to make a full recovery. In 2008 she reinjured her front pastern and was retired. She was one gutsy gal.
Hugs to all,
Leslie
shirleeinindy
Barbara, I saw that photo of Rachel’s filly this morning and could not believe that perfect heart on her face. Gotta name that girl Jess’s Valentine.
I agree Rachel seems much more peaceful as a mom than she did as a race horse. Of course, that fire was what made her so good on the track.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
What a great name that would be for the little one!
Darlene Daniels
Shirlee and Barbara,
I like that name too. Or “ValentineforJess”?

@ darlene love that name for rachel’s filly hugs sheena

Sheena. I saw that comment by Bullet Train. Strictly speaking Bullet Train’s siblings are from the relationship with his mother. Kind is not Istabraq’s mother. Bullet Train and Ista both have Sadler’s Wells as their father. However, if BT thinks that Ista is his brother, that’s okay with me.

I so agree with the previous comments regarding RA’s demeanor with her new filly. She appears calmer and more interested. She seemed a bit more reserved with Jess’s Dream. Maybe even slightly disinterested at first (but certainly no Tasty Temptation).
What a lovely filly….she has the look of a sweetheart. Jess’s Sweetheart.

Borel to Return to Races Over Weekend
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Wednesday, February 13, 2013 2:48 PM
Jockey Calvin Borel has resumed exercising horses and hopes to continue his quest for career victory 5,000 on Feb. 16.
Borel, who fractured his wrist a few days before opening day at Oaklawn Park Jan. 11, is one win away from the historic milestone, something only 24 other riders have accomplished.
Borel is currently being represented by veteran agent Doc Danner while his longtime agent Jerry Hissam recovers from an illness.

Last nibble of Caviar: Bensley has just talked with Sean Kelly who attended the Press conference for Nelly. Moody was asked about what he feared most – he replied “Bad luck”.
Max
Kathy R. Whatever happens in the race will not change the fact that Black Caviar has already more than proven her worth as a superstar race horse. She is universally loved.
Zenyatta went into her last race as an unbeaten champion and came out of it as a legend. We admire her all the more for that last display of unbelievable drive and courage on the track and for just being the unique horse that she is. No matter what the stats may say, Z won that final race. She was breathtaking then and she still is breathtaking now. Her photos show this so clearly.
Nelly, go for it!
tony
Max, beautifully said.
Kathy R.
Second that, Tony! I think that is the issue a lot of folk Downunder have with Nelly – that (except for the races involving Hay List and of course, the “out of jail” at Ascot) she has not been truly tested. That’s why I thought that piece I posted from Sportsman was of such interest. Zenyatta, on the other hand has always raced, and fought to win her race. Agree with you completely, Max, she won that last race. Just a magic horse.
Darlene Daniels
Max,
I agree completely. Eloquently said. You have a talent for expressing things so well.

dear max did you see on kauto’s twitter page about the photoshoot for H and H will be in feb 21st edition he managed to get 17 packs of mints out of the fridge and then planned to raid supersteve’s some one told him he’ll have to cut down now he’s a model!!! paul’s tidal bay(or idle bay as denman calls him)has got top weight in the national last one to win with top weight was the immortal red rum in 1974 with 12st hugs sheena
Max
Sheena. That is what I could not figure out. I thought that these polos were mints but could not understand why they were in a fridge. Maybe to keep Kauto away? He then learned how to get the fridge door open. That Denman is a real character. I listened to an interview with Charlotte, his new rider, who said that he is adjusting well to his hunt career. He must be very intelligent like Kauto to understand that new role. It is great that these two high profile horses have these new careers. Denman makes some pretty colorful comments on his twitter. Neigh!

Just went to the http://www.pedigreequery.com to look up Tasty’s baby, and it said she had “none listed”. That was puzzling. Does anyone know where her baby is?
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Don’t use pedigreequery as a first resource. It is a user-maintained site, and if no one has provided or updated the info, it won’t be there. The best resources are Equibase for statistics of active racers, and Equineline for pedigrees and to find unraced horses. Pedigreequery is good for a fast lookup of, say, a stallion’s progeny. Pedigreequery’s pedigrees are accurate also, and the links make it easy to navigate through a horse’s ancestry. Race records may or may not be up-to-date for current racers, although they usually are for high-profile horses.
Tasty’s 2012 Candy Ride colt is as yet unnamed. He is probably at the yearling farm with 12Z and the other LE yearlings.
Here is 12TT’s pedigree:
