Happy Wednesday!
Alys took these great photos of Zenyatta playing in her paddock. We think she looks especially beautiful set against the snowy Lane’s End landscape.
Team Z and the staff at Lane’s End are getting ready for the arrival of this year’s foals. Accordingly, we’d like to invite the next round of questions for our “Ask The Experts” column. Questions related to the foaling process will be considered first, but all questions are welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Edit: We have receieved so many great questions from all of you! Submissions are now closed for the time being. If you didn’t get a chance to ask your question, don’t worry, there will be more opportunities in the future.
Some of you have recently asked about the Zenyatta Shop. Our apologies, the Shop is closed at this time. If you have any outstanding orders or inquiries, please contact us by emailing info@zenyatta.com.

hi all
how does this work….
do they still sell them as one?
or do they have to sell them separately?
anyone know?
zenyen
They’re sold as one, just as if the mare was still carrying the foal. It has never been the practice of any sale to separate a ‘suckling’ from his or her dam for a sale.
In fact you will read occasionally where an owner will purchase the mare, because they really want the foal. That happened last year I believe.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Very interesting. Thanks, Zenyen. Good question, Carol.

andrea
Do they put the newborn in the ring? I have seen parturient mares in sales rings, seems a little barbaric.
Keta
andrea,
I just read on Twitter that the foal was in the ring
According to the writer, sometimes they buy the mare, but they really
want the foal.
I understand this is business-but doesn’t make me happy
Hugs,
Keta
Zenyen
It would be more traumatizing for the mare and foal to be separated, even for the couple of minutes it would take them to sell.
Baby goes where Mom goes and so long as she’s there, the foal will be fine. These people are experienced at handling mares with young foals at their side.
And yes, it is a fact of the business that often the mare is bought when it is the foal that the new owner truly wants but this is the case whether the foal is at the mare’s side or unborn.

Fasig-Tipton February: Canadian champion Sealy Hill to Regis Farm for $590K
By Joe Nevills and Nicole Russo Daily Racing Form 02/11/2013 6:44PM
As she kept a watchful eye on her newborn Distorted Humor filly, Canadian Horse of the Year Sealy Hill brought the hammer down at $590,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale Monday evening, selling to newcomer Nat Rea’s Regis Farm.
The 9-year-old Point Given mare, who delivered her filly on the sale grounds the night before she sold, was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, as agent for Eugene Melnyk’s Winding Oaks Farm. Multiple Sovereign Award-winning owner-breeder Melnyk, who plans to exit the breeding business and concentrate on maintaining a quality racing string, is selling the majority of his remaining broodmares at Fasig-Tipton.
Rea, who made headlines when he purchased the sale-topping $1.45 Street Sense yearling filly at the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, declined comment following the purchase.

I actually saw her being sold and she was bought by a farm in Canada owned by a Mr. Rea. He has just started in the breeding business and really loves his horses. So pleased that they both went to a good home here in NA. The filly was in the ring with her as well and was treated with much loving care by her own handler. And Sealy was such a lady. She seemed to trust the man handling her newborn implicitly.

Dear Keta: Nothing new on our Feral Filly, or her terrific Girl Jockey. On the issue of confidence building, Peter Moody has a great habit of taking his young ones to the country tracks (places like Murtoa, which thrills my husband, since he was born there!) and lets them try their style with reasonable fields. They usually win, but even if placing it gives them a big confidence boost. It’s a trick that the Peter Snowden (Darley) team do as well. Hugs KathyR.

Frankel Begins New Stallion Career This Week
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Monday, February 11, 2013 1:47 PM
Juddmonte Farms released Feb. 11 more details about Frankel’s impressive 2013 book of mares as the champion racehorse begins his new career as a stallion later this week at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket, England.
Frankel, who won all 14 of his races, will be visited by an outstanding lineup of mares, including around 60 who have either won a group/grade I race, produced a group/grade I winner, or both.

Dear Z Family:
Just got back on line today. Missed all of you. Fortunately, we never lost electricity or heat in our complex; just internet and TV. Very lucky. There are mounds of snow left by the plows in the parking lot 6 feet or higher. Won’t be melting any time soon even though temps have warmed up some.
Spoke to Angela on and off over the weekend. She had a difficult time for a while tending to the 36 horses by herself. One helper got through to the farm late Saturday and five more came in on Sunday. She has back pain from all the shoveling she did, but overall things are in working order. She never lost her source of water for the horses, which was a concern.
All of the horses were kicking their stalls wanting to go outside. Angela finally was able to let them out again and Charlie, Gigi and all of them were just jumping and leaping in the snow and having so much fun. Gigi is totally sound now.
Missed not being able to communicate with all of you. Have to catch up on all the posts. Hope all of you who endured this storm came through OK. Love and Hugs, JB

Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Jan, Angela is the wonderful lady (she truly is an angel) who runs the boarding facility where Judy took the off-the-track TB rescues Papa Charlie and Gigi. Angela fell in love with Papa Charlie right off the bat and adopted him to be her own. Angela additionally trains horses and riders, hunter/jumper, I believe (correct me if I’m wrong, Judy).

Dear Jan and Trina:
Jan, Trina explained who Angela is. I was so lucky to find her when I was trying to place Papa Charlie. She had agreed to take him temporarily until we could find a forever home. But when she saw him and lead him off the van, she decided to adopt him and keep him for her own trail horse. He is a pampered, happy horse now.
Angela and I have become great friends in the shared love we have for Papa Charlie, horses and all animals. Hugs, JB

Glad to hear all that, Judy, I was worried about Angela trying to take care of all 36 horses on her own. I know how hard it is, when you have too much of a load to do, all by yourself, and didn’t want to think how scary it could be for her, and for the horses, especially with them cooped up with cabin-fever. Thankfully, it sounds like the worst is over. Glad to see five came to help yesterday. Thanks

Dear Vicki B.:

Hugs, Keta
Kathy R.
Dear Keta: Depending on the result Saturday, the retirement lap may become even more of an exhibition gallop. Crowds here are fickle especially with mares. Many think she should have retired after Ascot, and there’s more interest in the potential stallion prospects. The crowd was in fact very poor for her outing recently – the fact she will pay nothing also comes into contention. Just hope nothing goes wrong.
Max
Kathy R. My theory is that Saloon may be campaigning to get Ms Nelly to return to Ascot.
Kathy R.
Dear Max: Reckon you might have something there! Still have no whispers on Voila Ici – thought he’d be back in training by now, but the Moody camp may have their hands full with other pre Blue Diamond events. I have this little idea that just won’t go away that the connections would like to visit Frankel.
Max
Kathy R. Thanks for the status report on the romances of BC. A trip to Ascot might fit in well with a visit later in the summer or fall with Frankel. Presumably her connections would want to race any foal in Australia so that they would pay attention to the official August 1 birthday. BC herself has a great birth date for a Southern Hemisphere horse: August 18.

The following essay by retired Quebec English teacher Abigail Anderson was written in response to my last blog on Zenyatta. Although it is quite long, it is so brilliantly written and researched I felt it should be shared it with everyone.

Thank you, everyone! When I wrote this I had no idea that Steve would want to post it. And then, the responses were so moving! Which, as Trina rightly points out, was the beginning of The Vault and my taking the huge step to share a lifelong passion for the thoroughbred. But what I should add is this: every writer writes to an “ideal reader.” And in my case, that ideal reader was a collective — all my Dumplings on Zenny’s Diary. It’s the heart of the magic of this site for me. A place of kindness and possibility, a place of friendship and support. Black Caviar/Lightning Stakes news: Andrew Bensley has just reported in from track work this morning. Peter Moody confirmed three starters for the race Saturday – Moment of Change, Golden Archer and Black Caviar. Anticipated number of starters 7-9. In an attempt to make it look like a race, they’re paying down to around 6, so some will go just for the money!

If any of you receive the Bloodhorse magazine the most recent ( just came today) inside the most incredible picure of the start of the race won by Revolution. How the rider on Valid stayed and how Valid righted himself and went on ( not to win) but just went on…… and picked up speed. I will have to go and try and find it on the internet. What a start. Photo is heart-stopping. So glad no one ( horse or rider) was hurt….It reminds me of the start of Afleet Alex in the Preakness…. and he went on to win it. Considered one of the greatest moments in sports history and athleticism. Happy Monday and hope for those of you in the snow and the storm, things are improving. What a winter…..eh????

At what point does LE determines, Z is ready for retirement from the life as a Broodmare? Are there any telling points? Do you think the Mosses will let Z rest this year, and bring her back in 14?
carolinarkansas
I may be wrong but Z is boarded at LE…..the Mosses own her….so decisions about her breeding would be made by them…that being said….I am absolutely sure that the Mosses have all the best expert advice available and nothing will happen that is not in the best interests of our beautiful Zenny…..breeding every year is normal for healthy mares……but if they do need a break then the pregnancy does not “catch”….
I think this is correct…but many folks here have much more experience and hopefully will let us know if I am wrong

Racing returns to Yarra Valley after 26 month lay-off…
RT @YVRacing: “First Race on Sunday 17 February at 1.20pm & last is at 5.34pm”
Keta Note: Here is some background info
After the devastating floods of 2010, the Club has now completed almost $4.1 million in improvements – including a major redevelopment of the course proper, flood mitigation works and a number of improvements to customer facilities to enhance the overall comfort and amenities for patrons. The Club is confident that these improvements will provide patrons with an even greater raceday experience than ever before.
We are looking forward to all our usual Harness Meetings including the iconic Melbourne Cup Day, our relatively new and exciting Oaks Day (especially for the Ladies) and don’t forget to book early for your Christmas Party at our Harness Pacing Cup Meeting on Friday 14th December.
Our first Thoroughbred meeting for the season will be held on Sunday 17 February 2013 followed by the St Patricks Day – Yarra Valley Cup on 17 March 2013. We were aiming to be back racing in early December, however, after several unforseen delays during construction the Board has chosen to delay the return to racing to ensure that the track has time to consolidate and that turf has extra time to establish.
This delay will ensure that our return to racing runs smoothly.
Located in the heart of the Yarra Valley and less than one hours drive from the Melbourne CBD – Yarra Valley Racing will continue to showcase all the wonderful things the region has to offer. Whether it is a relaxed day out with family or friends, or a work function with colleagues or clients – Yarra Valley Racing has a range of package options available to suit all your requirements.

Dear Judy,
So So glad your back safe and sound. Glad everyone is safe. God bless Angela for everything she has done for the horses. I checked on Gabby and nothing on her since the middle of January. I am getting a little worried. Hope she is OK. Hope no news is good news. Pray your safe Gabby.
Judy stay safe

Dear Peggy:
Thank you so much for your kindness. Yes, Angela is a very special person. I like and admire her so much.
I am wondering about Gabby too. Maybe they will work her again the middle of this month.
It’s so good to be able to be back in touch. Love and Hugs, JB
