Happy Wednesday!
Alys took these great photos of Zenyatta playing in her paddock. We think she looks especially beautiful set against the snowy Lane’s End landscape.
Team Z and the staff at Lane’s End are getting ready for the arrival of this year’s foals. Accordingly, we’d like to invite the next round of questions for our “Ask The Experts” column. Questions related to the foaling process will be considered first, but all questions are welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Edit: We have receieved so many great questions from all of you! Submissions are now closed for the time being. If you didn’t get a chance to ask your question, don’t worry, there will be more opportunities in the future.
Some of you have recently asked about the Zenyatta Shop. Our apologies, the Shop is closed at this time. If you have any outstanding orders or inquiries, please contact us by emailing info@zenyatta.com.

Hay List comeback gathers momentum
Posted by: AAP Filled in: Australian Horse Racing | 10/2/2013 at 5:45pm
Hay List has taken another step towards an autumn comeback with a testing gallop between races at Gosford on Sunday.
The giant sprinter, rated the second best in the world behind Black Caviar, worked alongside stablemate Australian Star with the pair doing the business part of the workout in the back straight.
Ever-cautious about the injury-prone Hay List, trainer John McNair said he did not want to risk the horse pulling up on the crossing and so elected to test him on the far side of the course.
http://www.justhorseracing.com.au/news/australian-racing/hay-list-comeback-gathers-momentum/188262
Andrew Bensley tweet Hay List galloped earlier today at Gosford.
Glyn Schofield said horse wanted to go quicker.
Looking forward to trial Feb 26 at W/Farm
JSmith
Love that Hay List, he is a gorgeous looking horse. Wishing him all the best.
Kathy R.
Dear JSmith: Hay List and his trainer are terrific: John McNair and the Davenports (who own Hay List) were just so game in coming back time and time again to have a crack at Nelly: the racing commentators should be ashamed of themselves for not giving the horse more credit for his performance – especially given that he raced at around 60% fitness most of the time. If he had not had the misfortune to run into Black Caviar he would have been lauded around the world as a champion sprinter. And he has cheated death on several occasions and still come back. He’s just wonderful.

Happy Birthday Marshall and Brenda. Hope you have many many more.

Red Tracer to return in Breeders Classic
Posted by: AAP Filled in: Australian Horse Racing | 10/2/2013 at 4:45pm
Stakes winning stablemates Red Tracer and Nocturnelle kick off their autumn campaigns against each other on Saturday as their carnival ambitions gather momentum.
Trainer Chris Waller had a rare winless weekend but seems likely to pass the 100 mark for the season in the next few days with the Sydney record of 156 in his sights as he sits on 96-1/2 with more than five months remaining.
Saturday’s Rosehill meeting features Canonbury and Widden Stakes for two-year-olds, the Light Fingers and Royal Sovereign Stakes for three-year-olds and the Breeders’ Classic (1200m) for mares, the planned return for Red Tracer and Nocturnelle.

Trina,
Wonderful article.

Trina,
Thanks for the post! I had no idea that these creatures are used in Italian meat processing for salami and sausages. I think it is horrible that horses and donkeys would be used in this way — they should not be eaten!
This is a wonderful story, One of those somewhat rare “happy endings”.
Thanks, again! Hugs

Z Nation.. Thank you one and all for your courage. I am proud of you. As Rosemary said, Ann Moss described Zenyatta as always choosing to be kind. It is the only way. Let us speak no more of what was, but move on together with our love of Zenyatta, all other horses and God’s creatures as our only purpose to be here. There are great things to come on the Zenyatta horizon.

I had not read all of the posts over the last few pages or so.
After I did I was just sad. I can only hope that we do move on to
those great things on the Zenyatta horizon and one that comes to mind
in the not so distant future is the arrival of 13Z.
Max, welcome back.

Welcome back Max, you are a great representative of what a Zster should be. I agree one hundred percent, put it behind us and march forward. That baby will be here before we know it, and we’ll all be “dancing and a prancing” and have someone very special to think about. Hugs to all

Yay Max – so glad that you’re back. We don’t know how long Judy Berube will be technologically “out of commission,” but I know that she will be especially glad to see that you are still here.
Max
Sandy. I am anxious to hear from Judy and how Angela is coping. I keep thinking of those 36 horses.
Keta
Max,
Welcome back!! You know how much I care.
Here is a Repost.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
February 9, 2013 at 8:39 pm
Have an update on our Judy Berube to share. She is iced in, but has not lost power. No tv or computer, though. She has food. Her only really bad news is that PC and Gigi are being cared for by Angela, who has no help who can come to her. The 36 horses are in the barn, and she can’t let them out because the pasture is icy and could be dangerous. They are getting antsy and kicking their stalls. Prayers for calm to reign in the barn until they can go out.
This report came to me from Skip (Barbara Grimaldi) who lives fairly close and must have talked to her by phone. Stay safe and warm, Judy and Lola Mae. Hugs.
Thank you Barbara & Skip for this update.
Hugs, Keta

Dear Max, Keta and Z Fans:
Thank you all for your sweet concern. Kept in touch with Angela by phone and all is back in working order. As of today the horses were able to go back outside for the first time since Friday and they were jumping and leaping in the snow; just loving it. Gigi too.
Angela did have a difficult time for a while on her own, but people were able to get to the farm yesterday to help her with the horses and things are better. She is nursing her back which she hurt from all the shoveling she did. Will try to get out to the farm some day this week. Love and Hugs, JB

Looking forward is always the best thing to do. We’re glad to see you posting here, Max. The Z nation is all about spreading the joy and love…just as our Queen does.

Max! So glad you’re back. I remember your very first posts on Zenny’s Diary and how we all fell madly in love with you. I know that I don’t post as frequently as I should, but until my own computer arrives I’m taking pot-luck on my son’s iPad and need to be selective. But all of my Dumplings are family. And that includes you! I have little doubt that the site Administrator will take some action to ensure that each of us has the space and freedom to chat here and share our mutual passion. Until then, let’s try to carry on as Dottie would want us to and as Zenny expects us to. As the kind, terrific and smart two-legends we are! I send you hugs, my friend.
Ann Maree / Tennessee
Ditto to what Abigail said. The blog is the closest link most of us have to Zenny and her “family.” Many of us connect to each other in other ways, but somehow, the blog is where we are able to reach out and almost touch our Queen. It is where we can express our gratitude for the access we are given to see Zenny’s world, and to be a part of her daily life. It is where we can connect with those at Lane’s End who are with Zenny and care for her on a daily basis. It is a direct way to say “Thank you” for all that you do for us, and for Zenny! So, for all of us, I hope this avenue will forever remain open and available.

Well said Ann Maree!

Dear Z’sters,
Many thanks to all of you who sent birthday greetings to me. I fear that I would overlook mentioning someone if I tried to list all of you since there are different pages involved — so consider yourselves MUCH appreciated!!
I did have a very nice day — celebrated with friends at a favorite eatery (Ann, you might know of Breadmen’s on West Rosemary?). My boss bought me a birthday lunch on Friday, and today, I drank the last glass of Evan Williams Eggnog which I had reserved for my birthday. Plan to have a slice of birthday cake later so the celebration continues!!
One of my birthday presents each year is the Westminster Dog Show. I look forward to enjoying it Monday and Tuesday nights. I am certain that they schedule it for MY natal day! LOL
Again, many thanks to all Dumplings! We may have our ups and downs, but at the end of the day, this site makes me happy! Love you, Zenyatta, sweet girl!

Late as usual, but a very Happy Birthday Marshall!

Not to be impersonal to all the posters but here is a big belated Happy Birthday wish to one and all who celebrate birthdays in the month of February!!!! My best wishes for another wonderful year to enjoy each other’s virtual company on Z’s blog.
I do hope those in the North are doing ok after being clobbered by a really irritated Mother Nature!!! All the attachments, links are so interesting and I want to thank you all. Still catching up and may never do all 13 pages at this time. I will certainly try. A real education.
Thanks especially for these wonderful photos Lane’s End. She is a beautiful lady who has brought such a great group of people together to share in her joy and spirit.
Dear, our Poet Laureat Trina, thanks for all your uplifting poetry. A joy to read.

Happy Belated Birthday, Marshall!
Welcome back, Max! I’m so glad you came back. I always enjoy your posts. I know it’s hard to do, but when I read something negative, I choose to ignore it. dear max dont know if you’veheard the horsemeat scandal is going from bad to worse over here findus a frozen food company had been selling beef?? lasagne with 100%horse meat everyone seems to be blaming each other seems the horses were from romaniaeven talk they were contaminated with bute it might teach people to go back to their local family butcher to shop hope you’ve escaped the storms as usual it’s raining here!!hugs sheena
Max
Sheena. Yes, I heard the latest news which has rightly been described as a national scandal. People must be upset by this. It is very shocking for the UK because the British are animal lovers on a grand scale. Horses in particular are revered where you are, as well they should be. I personally long ago gave up on eating meat. After I saw the movie, Babe, I bascially turned into a vegetarian. I could probably live on Zenyatta’s diet. I hope that it stops raining where you are.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Good for you, Max, for going vegetarian. That movie Babe is one of my all-time favorites. Too cute for sure.

Sheena, I have been seeing a lot of those horse-meat stories too, lately. I was surprised it went that far, effectively “hiding” horse-meat in beef that gets mixed, frozen, shipped to other countries (I read), being hid some more, and eventually comes back in common things people eat. I think if they’re dishonest about the fact it’s horse-meat, then they likely don’t care what drugs it’s got in it, either. It might do some good, if as you say, it gets people buying more local, if they feel they can trust.
I have not gone completely vegetarian, yet. I have just cut out about 90% of the quantity of meat, that I used to eat. But I love the movie Babe, too! I even liked the sequel, which wasn’t nearly as good, and which many did not care for.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Loved the movie. Loved Babe. Even have a little stuffed one who sings, “La,la,la” when you press its tummy. So cute!

Animal Kingdom not a ‘happy camper’
The Miami Herald By Sports Network Posted on Sunday, 02.10.13
According to trainer Graham Motion, his 5-year-old trainee Animal Kingdom is “angry and hungry” after losing to Point of Entry in Saturday’s Kitten’s Joy Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap.
Animal Kingdom, owned by Team Valor, was the 4-5 favorite in the 1 1/8-mile grass stakes, but lost by 1 1/4-lengths to the Breeders’ Cup Turf runner-up. It was Animal Kingdom’s first start of the year after finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
“I thought it was a good run. I think Joel (jockey Joel Rosario) was worried the speed was a little slow, so he moved a little early, which cost us the race,” Motion said Saturday. “It gave Point of Entry a chance to follow him. He was beaten by a very good horse under awkward circumstances.
“I think more than anything it caught him off guard for him to find himself in front so early. I think Animal Kingdom was surprised by that. Somebody who has ridden him and had more confidence in him might have been more patient with him. I think Joel was just anxious with the other riders going slowly and felt they should catch up, which confused the horse a little.”
Animal Kingdom, the 2011 Kentucky Derby champ, is scheduled to start in the $10 million Dubai World Cup on March 30 while Point of Entry may go in the $5 million Sheema Classic on the card

Dear Zenyatta family: for nostalgia reasons I just went back to the September 2010 diary entries and was more than a little puzzled. The comments are nothing to do with Zenyatta – some are downright weird – has something happened to the archive material, or is it the crazy world wide weather? KathyR.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Kathy R. — you are right! But those Sept. & Oct. 2010 “Archives”, all have comments dated in 2012. The October 29, 2010, has several long comments in French, Spanish, & German! One seems to be about shoes. And they have garbage characters embedded, as well. Some of the “comments” are so bizarre. One is a LONG stream of nothing but obscenities of every variety, I want to see if I can report it to the admins, as surely we would not want any child stumbling across it, however unlikely. But after October 2010, then Nov. 2010 seems normal.
I do remember seeing a long time ago, some bizarre comments that appeared to be as if they were from completely different websites (related to Windows, Website services, and fashion). I remember thinking that it must be a computer glitch — there may have been a problem at the Blog service, in their database, or with indexing — it looked like some mangled cross-linking. I may be wrong, but that would be my best guess.
Kathy R.
Dear Vicki B. Thanks for that – thought I was cracking up. I’ve found today in particular that the whole site seems to be having a migraine: very slow loading, and “freezing” as I scroll down the posts. Hope all is okay – need my daily (or more) fix. Hugs, KathyR.
Abigail_1849
Kathy: I had a really weird experience here last night. When the Blog loaded, the photos came up and then it was all grey space with no comments by any of you and pieces of the photos above. I went back to the Diary and it loaded just the same way. The Forum, however, was okay. Very weird but the site administrators might be working on it or something…?
Zenyatta's Web Team
Hey guys—those weird comments are classic spam. We get hundreds each day, but our spam filter deletes them before they are posted on the site. Occasionally the spam filter goes offline for a short period and spam comments slip through. We delete them when we see them, but we haven’t been looking at the oldest posts lately. Thanks for catching that!

Dear Max, Was so sad yesterday after reading about Shergar. Had not heard the story before, but it was ironic that when I was watching the Brit Com last night As time goes by they mentioned about the dissappearance of Shergar in the story line. So Ironic. I came over hear to read the posts and someone here mentioned it. I just don’t want any animal to be hurt and I am so afraid they hurt him. Breaks my heart.
But anyway its helped my heart that your back. So glad. Better ending to this weekend.
I pray God has Shergar with him and he will deal with whomever did him harm.

I had read a truly awful account of this……but since he has never
been found ….hope it was not true

Peggy (N). That story of Shergar is very sad. Here’s a story of a stolen horse which ended well. Fanfreluche was taken from Claiborne while she was in foal to Secretariat, but fortunately she was found and returned to Seth Hancock. It is a very strange story, but with a happy ending. It might make you feel better.

That is such a nice story about Fanfreluche. So glad she was found. And, it is so nice to read this happy ending. How about there passing so close to the same time. Reminds me of Man O War and how he died only about a month after his beloved groom. So touching how they said he grieved.
So glad Fanfreluche and Optimistic Gal were buried side by side.

Speaking of cuteness overload, I DVR’D one of the “Too Cute” episodes on Animal Planet” Mini- Pot Bellied Pigs, Mini-lops and little Hedgehogs. And although they are guilty of too much anthropomorphizing – the animals are adorable and according to the story, all found good homes and happy endings.
I know they do kittens and puppies, but this was fun to see different potential pets.
Hope everyone is home safe and sound and warm. Still trying to catch up on articles.

dear max and vicki b yet more sad news over here with the horsemeat seems about 70,000 horses over the last 3 years have been sent over from the irish republic on illegal passports slaughtered here meat distributed over europe then back here does’nt anyone care about these beautiful creatures am so upset about it thank God i hardly eat meat now only from a local butcher makes me think of gandhi’s words”the greatness of a nation and it’s moral progress can be judged by the way it’s animals are treated” seems we are sadly lacking
on a much lighter note babe was on over christmas here sooo love the film max have you seen paul’s good horse silviniaco conti kauto says he’s been coaching him with his ipad neigh!!hugs sheena
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Sheena, on Facebook, there was also a post about a horse found & verified, I think 3 yrs. after it had been reported slaughtered — that brought up the likelihood that papers were faked for some other, larger horse which WAS slaughtered, illegallyl. And they found the papers, appeared valid, but discovered were forged. Ugly, ugly stuff.
Kathy R.
Dear Sheena: Hate to sound negative, but it’s no wonder so many of us lack faith in various institutions – this criminal activity is just an example. Must admit when I read about it in our newspapers, I just got onto the site, and looked at Zenyatta, and felt so much better. Hugs, KathyR.
Max
Sheena. Here’s a link to a recent story about Silviniano Conti, so that everyone will know about him. These chase horses get some great names. I also looked at Kauto’s twitter. He mentioned that he has learned to open a fridge door (must have decided to open doors like Mariska) and he ate 17 packets of polos. Are these polos peppermints? Neigh!

Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t Violence a 1/2 brother to Rachel?
Does anyone know if any of Queen Zenny’s brothers are on the Derby trail?
Keta, Thank you for the picture and update on Paynter. Who would believe that was him after the way he looked when he was so ill.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Zenyatta only has one brother. He is Souper Spectacular, a 2007 gelding by Giant’s Causeway. He is a turf horse. Vertigieux had a filly in 2010 by Henrythenavigator; she is as yet unnamed. It does not look like she is on the Oaks trail, since she hasn’t started yet.
zenyen
Shirlee,
Violence is sired by Medaglio D’Oro who is Rachel Alexandra’s sire. However in the thoroughbred world horses are not considered ‘siblings’ unless it is through the mother line.
There for while Violence is by the same sire as RA he is not her ‘half brother’.
shirleeinindy
Thanks guys for all the information. Thought horses were like people and if their mother or father were the same they were siblings. Proper terminology or not, I am still going to think of Violence as her little brother I won’t say it out loud however LOL.

If you are asking if there are any Street Cry boys on the Derby Trail, it doesn’t look like there is one among the current top contenders. The closest thing would be Capo Bastone (Street Boss), who is Street Cry’s grandson. Six horses sired by Street Cry were nominated to the Triple Crown, however, and one or more may step up. It’s early yet. There are also five Street Senses, a Street Hero, and four Street Bosses including the aforementioned Capo Bastone.
