Happy Wednesday!
Alys took these great photos of Zenyatta playing in her paddock. We think she looks especially beautiful set against the snowy Lane’s End landscape.
Team Z and the staff at Lane’s End are getting ready for the arrival of this year’s foals. Accordingly, we’d like to invite the next round of questions for our “Ask The Experts” column. Questions related to the foaling process will be considered first, but all questions are welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Edit: We have receieved so many great questions from all of you! Submissions are now closed for the time being. If you didn’t get a chance to ask your question, don’t worry, there will be more opportunities in the future.
Some of you have recently asked about the Zenyatta Shop. Our apologies, the Shop is closed at this time. If you have any outstanding orders or inquiries, please contact us by emailing info@zenyatta.com.

Dear Keta, and Black Caviar fans: Have just heard Andrew Bensley (Keta’s Downunder source) talking on Skysportsradio. Ortensia will not be entering in the Black Caviar Stakes as Paul Messara thinks she’s not quite race fit for an event of that kind (sensible of him). The field is a very paltry one at present, but I think that’s how it’s going to be until the trainers see just how Nelly goes in a race: even if it’s a Nelly benefit type of race. So it’s most likely a case of keeping their powder dry at present and keep their horses trained right up to the minute in case they decide to really take her on. Peter Moody is putting several of his team in the race, and Clarrie Connors is sending an entry (I think it’s Satin Shoes). Will keep you posted, as will Bensley and Keeta! Hugs, KathyR.

Now THIS is what I call a wet track: Sheena, on the other hand, would probably think it just a little heavy:

WHEN IS ZENYATTA’S DUE DATE
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
It has not been announced, nor was her breeding date revealed. There’s been some guesswork based on how far along she may have been when her pregnancy was announced last summer. She is probably due in the latter half of March or perhaps early April.

Fellow Z Peeps:
I have no idea what’s been going on while I took a break for a couple of months, but what I have been reading is so disturbing on so many levels! I have a funny and odd saying that I would like to share with all of you……..”check yourself before you wreck yourself” which basically means think before you say or do anything because your actions or words could get you in trouble!
@Keta: Happy to hear your daughter is ok and has power and gas! We here in CT are still in a Sate of emergency! but for the most part we are warm and NOT hungry! LOL!
Thanks you to Janet, Louise, Trina, Sign and all the rest who welcomed me back after my hiatis, I hope to stay on this site so many of us love and where a lot of us find happiness and solace from life’s unpredictable challenges.
Congrats to Gary Stevens and welcome back to riding again! We missed you!
Ok I don’t know about the storm in 1978, I was a little young, so I can’t really make any comparison but if was anything like this one WOW, I am glad I don’t remember!
Here’s Hoping for Kind words and warm thoughts on this site only!

Thank you for the pic of Ebby. I know she is not technically black, but she sure looks black to me. Perhaps before her racing days are over I will learn to properly pronounce and spell her name.

Ashton: thanks for the twit pic of Ebby! she looks great! so looking forward to her next race and her bright beautiful future!
@Carol: Thanks for the update on Ebby, I appreciate it so much, so looking forward to her next race, she reminds me so much our “Queen Z”! I only hope she has her talent, so we will have something to keep us on the edge of our seats watching!

I heard that MA has the most people without power, followed by RI, then CT.
I hope that Judy B in Rhode Island is okay. I assume that since she has not posted, she may be in a power loss situation. I pray that she is doing okay.
Last I have heard Ebby is doing well and training well. I do not know when she
may race next.
Big Hug out to you GS

So good to have you back GS. You were missed! Thank goodness you are warm! I hope not many people lost power and that it comes back quickly. I’m also worried about Slewpy who posts mostly on the forum side. She had a terrible time after Sandy and I haven’t seen any posts from her since this storm. Slewpy if you are reading this, I hope you will check in with us. I hope everyone gets through this safely.

Zenyatta is just gorgeous as always.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Have an update on our Judy Berube to share. She is iced in, but has not lost power. No tv or computer, though. She has food. Her only really bad news is that PC and Gigi are being cared for by Angela, who has no help who can come to her. The 36 horses are in the barn, and she can’t let them out because the pasture is icy and could be dangerous. They are getting antsy and kicking their stalls. Prayers for calm to reign in the barn until they can go out.
This report came to me from Skip (Barbara Grimaldi) who lives fairly close and must have talked to her by phone. Stay safe and warm, Judy and Lola Mae. Hugs.
Louise Castello
Thank you Barbara. Judy and Angela and the horses are in my thoughts and prayers.
Marshall (NC broad)
Thanks bunches, Barbara! Glad to get an update on Judy B. I wish I could help Angela with the horses. I know they will be okay because they are loved by wonderful folks; although, I know Angela needs help. Hope the roads will be passable soon and help can get there. Stay warm PC, Gigi and the others.
Judy B., you and Lola Mae stay safe and warm, too!
Warm Hugs to all!

Barbara,
Thank-you for the update on Judy B. I know she must be worried
that Angela does not have any help with the horses. Will pray
for Angela and the horses. When you hear from Barb G next, let her
know we are thinking and praying for her, Judy B and all back East trying to cope with
this weather.
Abigail_1849
Thank you, Barbara, for letting us all know how Judy is doing. As a native Canuck ( Montreal) I know a lot about snow storms like this one. Mercifully, we were spared the deluge this time around, although our version of it was nasty. We got the wind but far less snow. Still, even for hardy Montrealers, it was all too much and the streets were pretty empty until the following morning.
I’m sure the horses are getting restless. May I suggest a little whiskey or rhum in their feed? It really does have an excellent calming effect!
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Abigail,
Love your suggestion about a little whiskey or rum in the feed!
Works for me so why not for the horses!!
Stay warm! Hugs

Happy Birthday Brenda from Ft. Erie. Nice meeting you in November! As always, great poem, Trina! :-)
Keta, really enjoyed that Frankel video, thanks! A seven mile daily walk, huh! Well, he does seem very calm. After a walk like that, I would be passed out on the couch. Oh wait, I am anyway. Oh well….
Barbara (via Skip), good to get the update on Judy B. Watching the Weather Channel earlier, I wondered how she was doing.
And how about my “honey,” one G. Stevens, today! High hoof Gary!!

YAY! GirlSaratoga is back!!!
So glad to hear from you and to hear that you are doing okay. Sorry that there is a little soap opera playing out here, but am optimistic that things will sort themselves out soon.
There are good points in all of us, but sometimes we misbehave. We should remember our manners — be nice.
Please don’t stay away so long!
Cheers and hugs!

Dear GirlSaratoga,
I agree with your “if you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all” admonishment. I heard that advice throughout my childhood, and it is very good advice.
Rather than feel that one is the foremost authority, it is much better to remain silent — sometimes one might even learn something new. Thanks for your wise post; I sincerely hope that it is noted. I am sorry that your return to the site has been marred with unpleasantness. This, too, will pass.
Take care! All the best, always.

Happy Belated Birthday!!!!! Hope it was a good one? Thanks for agreeing with me, even as grown adults there are rules one must follow, I hope all of this negative talk and cyber bullying will now STOP! Life is just too short!
Now! We finally got plowed out this morning for 30 plus inches you need a BIG plow and more than one! No wind today, thank god, temp up a wee bit, and sunny skies! But have no fear we are in for a little something tonight, snow, sleet, and freezing rain! And then well maybe something else to really put us over the edge, another possible storm Wed into Thurs????? I guess everyone was right when they said Feb was gonna be BAD!
So happy to hear my friend Judy B is ok, wish I lived closer to help Angela, I know what it’s like to have to tend to a pack of cooped up horses all by yourself! By time you start with the first and end with the last it’s time to start again! We are still in a state of emergency here in CT, but they have lifted the driving ban, but who wants to go out, the snow mounds are so high you can’t see!
I am praying for all those in the neighboring town’s and state’s that they will have their power soon!
Sunny Hugs for now!

Trina and other “Pocket Hose is not safe for drinking” readers: after considerable hunting, the best info I have found so far is at “About.com” on “Container Gardening”.
Besides an explanation on the danger with lead in PVC hoses, near the bottom are 3 links, “a few options of where to buy hoses that are lead free”.
http://containergardening.about.com/od/greencontainergardening/a/Gardenhose.htm
One of their links was broken, so I found it on my own. Gardeners Supply carries a “Superslim Lightweight Hose” and a “Superslim Coil Hose”, and both meet NSF drinking-water standards.

Caught up with all the posts for the past week.
Barbara, thanks for the update on Judy B. — I hope Angela gets help, and is able to “manage” 36 horses ok meanwhile — it’s scary! Judy B., I enjoyed your stories about PC & Gigi, and “stud muffins” the horse treat.
Max, I hope you return. Otherwise, I will miss your exchanges with everyone, and more of your posts about Big D, Tasty, Paynter and Oxbow. That would be a loss. But I do understand what I call the “being fed up” feeling, it’s disheartening — I have felt that too here, sometimes. It is not nice being accused of things you haven’t done. Hopefully it will ease with time, and you’ll feel better about coming here.
Keta, Louise, Barbara, Trina, Marshall, GS, Sandy, Ashton, Ann Maree, Linda L. & HeidiK and anyone I may have missed — thanks all, for your courage in saying what you felt had to be said, as unfortunate as it all has been — hopefully, that will change for the better.

Wouldn’t it be great if Rachel had her foal on the 14th and they named her Jess’s Valentine? Just saying.
Janet Newman
Cute name.
Especially Horses / So Cal
If that should happen I think that would be a very appropriate name.
Especially Horses / So Cal
BTW…there is no direct match for it in the Jockey Club Registry and I noticed that the name Jess’s Dream is no longer in a “reserved” status but is an officially registered name now.

Dear Janet,
Thanks so much for this good news about Always A Princess. What a girl!! Sounds as though she was telling them (after the accident) “Don’t count me out, yet!” since the owner said she stood up and “saved herself” when they were considering euthanasia.
I do love a happy story — Congratulations to Always A Princess, her Medaglia d’Oro colt, and their connections!! Well done! It seems that Always A Princess is “always a champion”, too!
All the Best to Mama and baby (and Papa MdO, also)!
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Thanks for this touching story, Janet. I’m glad that Always a Princess and her foal are in the kind, capable hands of Don Robinson, who got our Zenny off to a great start at Winter Quarter Farm.
Brenda S., Fort Erie, Canada
Fort Erie is bright and sunny today, cold so I don’t think any snow will be disappearing until it warms up a bit and we get some rain. My son-in-law reports between two and three feet of snow up in Maine and I expect that Mass and NH got much more so I’m thankful that we got off relatively easy. I hope all you East Coasters are warm and cozy.
Thank you to all who posted best wishes for my birthday, and especially to the Poet Laureate, Trina, who continues to amaze us all with her wonderful poems and Sandy who said such nice things about me. My cousin’s wife and her neighbor took me out to the Red Lobster for dinner where I had a most enjoyable meal of lobster and shrimp (I ate all of it Sandy). I also received several phone calls of good wishes including one from Vic which quickly turned into a horsey conversation about Zenny, 12Z, Goldikova and all the horses in the barn at the college. All in all, very good day!!!
The future of TB racing here in Ontario is still very uncertain, no race dates announced yet which is making things a bit difficult to make any arrangements for Vic’s four week work placement in April. Normally the horsemen are back from the southern tracks by then but who knows what is gong to happen and she is not allowed to apply for placements out of the country so we are keeping our hooves crossed.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Brenda, it’s good to hear you were able to get out for a scrumptious birthday dinner yesterday. Please give our best to Vic–we’re so sorry her dream of doing her work session at Barn 55 with John Shirreffs. Maybe the college should make special allowances to do this assignment outside the country given the uncertainty of horsemen returning to Canada on their usual schedule this year.
Abigail_1849
Hi there Brenda! I’ve had some computer issues so have had to resort to using my son’s iPad when he lends it to me. But I wanted you to know that I send you only the very best and warmest birthday wishes and may the coming year be filled with love, laughter, good friends and beloved thoroughbreds — included the much anticipated Z-13 and Rachel’s little doll, whi is due any day now. Serious hugs!

Dear Brenda S. One of my favourite sites is that for Higgins Beach, Maine – the snow is just amazing! But I’ve said before, I just don’t know how you folk cope with all that white stuff – I’m really impressed with you all. Hugs,KathyR.

I agree that personal attacks against anyone on this site is unnecessary and not in keeping with the intent of Team Z and the whole concept of what Zenyatta has become. In Mrs. Moss’s own words in speaking of Zenyatta, “She chooses to be kind.” That comment should be Inspirational to all of us.
I have to apologize about complaining to a friend earlier today that it is too cold to walk my dogs (California, around 40-to 45 degrees right now) considering the snowstorms going on on the other side of the country right now. My dogs and I are first class wimps, what can I say?

Hurdy Gurdy Man gives Darren Weir a fourth Hobart Cup victory
Racing Victoria Sunday 10.02.2013
Hurdy Gurdy Man capped a successful Sunday’s racing for leading Victorian trainer Darren Weir, when the five-year-old son of Street Cry took out the $225,000 Group 3 AAMI Hobart Cup (2400m).
The victory was Weir’s fourth success in the Tasmanian showpiece following the wins of Gotta Keep Cool (2009), Offenbach (2008) and True Courser (2006).
Beaten as an odds-on favourite in the Terang Cup (2150m) last Sunday, after jumping from barrier 1 jockey Glen Boss positioned Hurdy Gurdy Man ($3.80F) in a midfield position on the back of a hot speed set by local galloper The Cleaner ($7.30)
