Crisp fall air always means change for mares and foals at Lane’s End. Zenyatta’s Medaglia d’Oro filly has recently been weaned. As 17Z and her herd playfully enter a new stage in life, Zenyatta enjoys some quiet time with her fellow mares.
Ann visited the farm in late September to spend some time with Zenyatta and her filly. We’re happy to share these photos from her trip. Scroll all the way to the bottom for videos too! Next week we’ll post a recent photo update from Alys.

Sheena et al, I did it i went toJohn’s barn, barn 47 at santa Anita and gave him all of our collective thoughts on the jockey for Ziconic and The Cosmic One. He was very pleasant and listened carefully. He said he could not say anything today and I said we did not ask for that just to hear our heartfelt thoughts on the matter He was grateful for our concern and caring and thanked all ov us!! I took pictures with my iPhone and tomorrow i will got to my apple people and send them to you. I ill try to message them to you on Facebook. if that does not work, I’ll go to my apple people to show me how to drop shot them to the blog. Thanks for your patience in my non-drop shop capabilities.
Marilyn Braudrick
Sheena, Pictures could not be messaged to Facebook. I would need an email or a cell phone number to message them. Otherwise i’ll get my apple people to get them so I can drop shot them from the phone to Zenny’s blog.

How is the filly handling being away from Mom? And how is Mom doing?
Zenyatta so loves her foals. It must be tough the first few days without her daughter close by.

Sometimes Aidan O’Brien puzzles me.He is thinking of running Churchill in the Breeders Cup classic against dirt giants such as Arrogate and Gun Runner.Churchill is a proven turf horse. On October 27th 2007 George Washington suffered a fatal injury in the slop at Monmouth Park.We were all angry that Aidan allowed him to run on such horrible ground US horses are used to slop.A few years later Coolmore spent thousands trying to save the life of St Nick’s Abbey and I commend them but wasn’t George’s life worth saving but then he was infertile so….Stay safe Churchill

“A few years later Coolmore spent thousands trying to save the life of St Nick’s Abbey and I commend them but wasn’t George’s life worth saving but then he was infertile so….Stay safe Churchill”
Sheena I’m surprised to see you be so unfair.
The injury George suffered was severe enough that he had to be put down on the track. That indicates a compound fracture, with bone protruding or a break/dislocation that can be seen and diagnosed by the naked eye as being severe enough that it cannot be recovered from.
No vet would sign off on an ‘on track’ euthanization unless the injury was obviously fatal. No track wants to have to put up the curtain and put a horse down in front of thousands of fans unless it is done because the horse is in a hopelessly crippled condition, and it would be a cruelty to make him/her suffer the ambulance ride off to the backside.
If there was any indication that George could have been saved, the horse would be loaded into the ambulance and taken back for further diagnostics before the call was made as to whether to pursue treatment or not.
sheena.davies(wales)
I am sorry if you think I am being unfair but many UK fans were angry with Aidan for allowing George to run on such dangerous ground. It was Aidan who ordered the euthanisation Thank God I never saw the race.I have always praised Aidan (if you notice my posts)and I will continue to do so. Thank you for your views.
Z13Rulz
Sheena perhaps I wasn’t clear on this point.
Aidan couldn’t request the horse euthanized ON THE TRACK. He could request that the horse be taken to the backside and destroyed but not ON THE TRACK. That would only be done at the order of the track vet.
When it comes to on track euthanasia the on track vet can order the immediate euthanasia of a horse without the permission of owners or trainer. See Eight Belles was destroyed before Larry Jones even got out to her.
In a situation like Coolmore I’m sure Aidan has proxy to sign the release to have a horse under his training euthanised on behalf of the owners, but he couldn’t order it to be an on track destruction.
The argument about whether it was proper to put George Washington back into training when he proved infertile is a separate argument. The decision to run on that slop in Monmouth well … all I can say is, note that the Breeders Cup has never been held at Monmouth again.
Marilyn Braudrick
Sheena I agree with you. I did see that race and I was deeply sad about George Washington. Everyone was.It was the most tragic event. Some years later I saw a race at Santa Anita where the horse was injured as badly and it occurred right at the wire in front of us all. The horse could not be vanned off and had to be euthanized right there at the wire. His entire foot was dangling from his leg and he was walking on that stump. Worst thing I have ever seen. So sad for that horse. This sport can be heart breaking. I have never gotten over that injury. It wasn’t a question of fertility here either. It was the severity of the injury that caused the on track euthanization. There was no choice here or with George Washington. I would have scratched George at Monmouth. It hurts to even remember these events. As I said, our sport can be so cruel :(
Let’s pray for a safe and sound field of horses for all of the Breeder’s cup races at Del Mar.

Dear Judy:Lots of negative comments for Coolmore regarding Churchill but someone told me one of the owners in particular is to blame and I can guess who.It is said Churchill will remain at Ashford Stud for 2018.Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT and all the sweeties.Love and hugs.SheenaX

Dear Judy B.,
I agree — his “Blueberry Hill” appealed to me especially when I was small, and it still does.
Fats Domino, one of the Greats, Rest in Peace, and thanks for the wonderful music.

Why does the filly have her leg wrapped?!
judy berube
Dear Melody:
The little Beauty has been said to have a mildly effected club foot. It’s not the same as in humans and varies in severity in horses. Usually corrected with trimming of the hoof, sometimes diet or sometimes toe extensions and in the worst cases, surgery. This is just a guess, but could be a corrective measure to use at night when she comes in doors to help relax the leg. Love and Hugs, JB

TU for sharing. We have waited so long❤️❤️❤️
However if Z17 as I am told is this SPECIAL Girls name.. I am disappointed.a special Filly as this one deserves a name not a numner?
I will call her Zee-na?
I just can’ t use Z17 to reference this very special Filly with a so not special name???
Marilyn Braudrick
I just call Zenny’s filly Z17 Princess because she is a princess in every way. Daughter to a Queen and Medaglio de Oro certainly is a King. Love them all and the personality of this one is so much like her sister who died that it is uncanny. We called her “curly mane”. We all loved her and cracked with pain when she had to die. It was so shocking. I send blessings every day to this Z17 Princess. She could be the runner her Mom and Auntie Winx are. At any rate, High hopes for her to have a happy and full life. I trust she will have that. She is lucky to have been born into a family that can take good care of her. The Mosses are fabulous. Just the other day, I went to the LA Zoo and went to it’s carousel and guess what? That carousel has a sign in front of it which says, “Donated by Ann and Jerry MOSS”. I was deeply moved at that gift to the children of LA.

There was a picture on this blog of Zenny with a gray horse. If it’s not a new gray friend, It has to be one of her first Lane’s End paddock mates, Tasty Temptation. If it’s a new gray friend, someone please tell me as I need to see that photo again and go back to my computer archives a re-study all of my many pix of Tasty Temptation. She was also a champion and so beautiful. She adored Zenny.

Nice to see Zenyatta’s little girl. Zenyatta is my favorite horse. She is absolutely amazing. I wish her and Secretariat had gotten together. Can you imagine that bloodline. Wow!
