Crisp fall air always means change for mares and foals at Lane’s End. Zenyatta’s Medaglia d’Oro filly has recently been weaned. As 17Z and her herd playfully enter a new stage in life, Zenyatta enjoys some quiet time with her fellow mares.
Ann visited the farm in late September to spend some time with Zenyatta and her filly. We’re happy to share these photos from her trip. Scroll all the way to the bottom for videos too! Next week we’ll post a recent photo update from Alys.

I absolutely LOVE how she is so SASSY! I love that in a mare. Born leaders in all aspects.

I don’t understand why Victor was holding him in, when finally Coz broke well, and was in the race early. There isn’t a problem with stamina with Zenyatta or any of her offspring. The problem is getting them in the race early, and now when it was finally working, he was holding him in. At the end, it looked like he had a hard time pulling him up. Another problem; Coz has always cornered wide, and he brought him to the outside just as he had to corner before the stretch; of course he cornered wide, and I think got tired and discouraged at that point. He also had a horse cross right in front of him, when Victor was trying to get him on the outside. I think it was one of the worse rides Victor has ever done. Sometimes he rides beautiful, but other times, you wonder what on earth he is doing. He has done the same thing with Chrome before; he knew that Chrome liked to be with the leaders, no further back then third, even if he had to go wide, he was good enough to do it. Whenever he held him back further, he lost the race, and this was a horse he said was the best horse he had ever ridden. I didn’t like his ride on Ziconic either. TIME FOR A NEW JOCKEY! I feel bad for Coz; it looked like he was ready to do something this time, and I think John had him ready. It’s too bad he had such a bad ride. I really believe a jockey can’t make a horse win, but he or she can get in a horse’s way, and cause a loss; this is what happened in this case!!
Roberta Gonzalez
I was watching the tape of our little filly, what a little instigator she is; she really wanted the other youngster to play, and even kicked out at him or she on the run. It was like she was saying, “Go on run, so I can catch you, just like my mom did”.
What a firecracker she is! Maybe a good name would be Z’s Firecracker.

I watched the race several times and have to agree.
Coz broke well and was held back right away. Victor brought him into the middle from the inside and Coz started to take off and looked excited to go-in fifth near the lead four and making more distance between him and the sixth place horse. I could feel him take off . But right at that moment Victor pulled him wide again, it slowed him down and allowed two horses to squeeze in. I wish Victor had let Coz go when he started to make his move, he had no obstruction in the middle. Coz could not run his race when he got pulled wide the final time just as he was excellerating. How frustrating that must have been- was not for lack of trying. There was a moment where he looked beautiful and was making a move, I do believe John had him ready and Coz was willing and wanted to go.
On a happy note, am so glad to hear Hudson is home and doing well.
Thanks for the good news Judy.
Ingrid Arnone
Debbie,
I agree with you, my brother and I we said the same thing.
Victor was terrible.
I hope the next race will be better.
Hug Ingrid.

I don’t believe Victor is the jockey for Coz & Ziconic. He isn’t getting the best out of either of Z’s boys.
Mary M
Just finished watching Coz’s race,…painful to watch….the use of the whip from the 4/8 mile point hurts. Horse and Jockey sure have no camaraderie…..if you believe you have to start using a whip to that extent that early when he was moving forward so easily. Don’t know why John doesn’t give Gary Stevens a 2nd go, He seemed to have the most rapport with Coz and with Ziconic. Neither colt appears to be the mental type to be muscled to run, I interpret both to be more of “finesse” horses that shut down if you start muscling them or beating on them. But what do I know . . . .
Fran W.
I have said from Coz and Ziconics first race that Victor is the wrong jockey for both horses. First he tries to ride them like Zenyatta liked to run with Mike but they are not Zenyatta. He is will find his own style but I would like to see Mike or Gary work those horses and develope a relationship and then race them! I believe they both have what it takes to win and with a different rider!!

I agree Victor is not a good fit for Coz and Ziconic. I cringed when he used the whip so early…that’s not going to help with either horse. Being jerked around doesn’t help either.
Make sure Coz gets lots of rest between races and get Gary or another patient rider.
Marilyn Braudrick
Someone please tell John to get Mike Smith on those horses. Or else i’ll go out to barn 47 at Santa Anita and do it myself. Oh well, i guess I’ll just do that. Wish me luck.Hope he doesn’t get mad at me.Come to think has Mike Smith ridden a Moss horse since he rode Zenny in her last race?Maybe they are mad at Mike?? OK Bon voyage to me.
Donna Z
Hi, Marilyn,
Gary Stevens may be a good fit for Z’s boys as well. He rode Ziconic in one of his first races (I don’t remember which one) and they did well together.
I also remember that Mike was working Ziconic in the mornings at one point. I think he rode him in one race, too.
Please let us know what John says when you can tell him that we would like him to try a rider other than Victor. You can tell him that quite a few of us have been hoping that he’d change jockeys for a long time.
Thank you.
Marilyn Braudrick
Huge Santa Ana threat to environment here starting earlier today. Cannot get to Santa Anita ’til at least Thurs. due to winds up here and an important medical appointment for my cardiac daughter. Will go to barn 47 ASAP. Will report back.

Zipse At The Track HorseRacingNation October 23, 2017
I much prefer to write about the action on the track, such as the impending first-ever edition of the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, but there are times in this game when sadness reigns. The past week or more was such a time.

Judy, I noticed your horse is at Tufts. What a great hospital. I bring my dogs there. Do you live in Massachusetts? I live in Western Mass!!
judy berube
Dear Celeste:
Hudson Township is not my horse. She is a horse that the rescue group I belong to rescued from Suffolk Downs. We rescued Papa Charlie from the same trainer and Hudson came to live at the farm in Cranston, RI where Charlie is, 15 minutes from where I live.
She has since been adopted by a mother and daughter and is now at a barn about 35 minutes away from me in Scituate, RI. The group keeps tabs on the horses they rescue, so I get to visit them often.
Yes, Tufts is the best veterinary hospital in New England I think. Love and Hugs, JB
Celeste/Massachusetts
Hi Judy! What a nice group you belong to…lucky horses! It’s so cool that we live so close to each other. Perhaps some day we will meet. I love reading your posts!
judy berube
Dear Celeste:
The group was brought together by love of Zenyatta. All Z’sters and wonderful ladies from all over the Country. We’re not involved in physical rescues as we once were, but we follow horses we’ve rescued in the past and help others as we can when they are in need. If it wasn’t for the group, I mever would have neen able to rescue Charlie.
Would be so great to be able to meet you some day. Enjoy your posts too. Love and Hugs, JB

Bonjour Zenyatta,
Such lovely photos of you and Ann. I hope you are not missing
your girl. I don’t know much about horses so maybe this is a
natural thing but my heart tells me no.
Does anyone have the link to Coz’s race?
I can’t find it.
Love to you, Zenyatta!
Lise from Maine
LoriW (So.Cal)
Hi Lisa!
Judy posted the link for Coz’s race on page 6 of this blog toward the bottom of the page…..I agree with everyone’s thoughts that a change of jockey is needed… to me Victor doesn’t seem to be the right fit for Coz & Zi, they are both talented and capable and just need the right ‘pilot’ to guide them.
Lise from Maine
Hi LoriW,
Thank you!
Will attempt to find the link.
Lise from Maine
Lise from Maine
Hi LoriW,
I found the link on page 6.
Cozmic One was doing well for a while in that race.
Why did Victor bring Coz to the “far outside” coming home is beyond
my comprehension.
This is crazy for an experienced jockey.
Does Coz need a new jockey?
I would say so.
Thank you so much regarding the link.
Lise from Maine
Martha Fosdick
I agree with all of you who think Coz and Ziconic need a new jockey. I wish I could go with Marilyn to speak to John. Do you think a petition would help our cause? My goodness if we can see what the issues are why can’t John?

I have always loved Chrome. What a race horse! I hope he does good at stud, and I hope they take care of him; he deserves it!
