Happy Wednesday!
As you may know, we were in Kentucky last week visiting Zenyatta, 14Z, and Ziconic. We posted photos from Lane’s End on Instagram and Facebook throughout the week, and we were happy to see so many of you following!
It still felt like summer in Kentucky, and we arrived to a beautiful full moon. We brought lots of pears, carrots, and mints with us and spent time with the horses every morning and afternoon.
This trip was extra special because Jeanne, April, and Jackie from Mayberry Farm were in town for the yearling sale. They were thrilled to spend time with us at Lane’s End and to meet Ziconic and Z Princess for the first time. It won’t be long before Ziconic goes to their the farm in Ocala for training.
Scroll down to see more photos from our visit. One of our favorites is available in the shop today!
Today’s post is dedicated to Street Cry, who will live on through Zenyatta, her children, and champions around the world.
Enjoy!

Dear Max.I just cannot imagine Moose living in a republic, after all, racing is the sport of Kings and I’m sure the Moose would pledge allegiance to Her Majesty!
Nicky Henderson had an open day at seven barrows today and SS looked magnificent,it was said. They are putting last season behind them and looking to the future.I was surprised to learn that SS had a minor wind op last year.I saw no problem with his ‘wind’!He will have a racecourse gallop in preparation for his comeback and he’s had no problem with his heart since but then,of course,he hasn’t been in a race for nearly a year!
I had a newsletter from Bransby and Hovis’ book goes on sale online from the 29th.They are hoping to raise £5,000 for a Hovis Housing unit! Our Boy is getting more famous.Independance for the Moose!Freedom for all.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. As we know only too well, one can never be certain what the Moose will do in any given situation, especially one involving his freedom. It may depend on how many carrots that The Queen is willing to put in the Moose treasury aka his feed tub. He might also want Estimate to pay a visit, although he did not get very far with Annie Power. He’s still waiting for her to show up.
See that Salmond is now talking of UDI for Scotland because of alleged English treachery. The Vow coalition seems to have unravelled already. That didn’t take long.
Happy to hear good news of SS. Hoping to hear news from Mullins about his horses, especially The Fly.
Freedom for our Moose. Beast, Dan and Snake, time to hunker down.

Dear Judy.Hope you have enjoyed your day at the farm.Poor Speedy, pray his vet’s visit goes well tomorrow.Nissy’s had a weather warning in NS,they are having sideways rain that’s what the weather guy said!!Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT Little Cap Hercules Frank and all the Sweeties.Love and hugs.Sheena.Downton Abbey returned to our screens tonight! Max
Sheena. Forgot to ask. Is this housing unit from Hovis’ charity work for needy horses? I’ll buy his book if it’s available to ROTW types.
Free the Moose! BDS, lights out in those stalls.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Yes, Bransby Rescue needs more covered housing for their horses so that is what the proceeds will be used for – and named after our Hovis!

Dear Sheena:
Left you a post a little further down this page. You get to see DA three months before we do. Can’t wait. Love and Hugs, JB
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Alec sounds like a sore loser!Have you ever seen her Majesty’s spoof twitter certainly good for a laugh!I am sure Her Majesty would keep Moose well supplied with carrots. The party conferences start this week Ed’s big speech Tuesday and then the thought of an election next year. There’s no peace for the wicked although I’m a good girl!!!Says me!Freedom for the Moose and all Mooses.Sheena
Max
Sheena. I’m sure that you are good. Sadly for those who wanted an end to this break up talk, it appears that Salmond has support from the leader of the No side. That cannot be good for Dave. Has defeat been snatched from the jaws of victory? Good thing for you that the jump season is around the corner. There’s also the Arc, Champions Day, the Canadian International and the Breeders’ Cup yet to come. Not certain that I’ve ever seen anything about spoofing the Queen. Is that the shows with puppets?
There are rumors that the deck guys are leaving on Tuesday if it doesn’t rain first and prolong their stay.
Free the Moose! BDS, those lights better be out. And forget about reading under the hay with flashlights. You fellows need sleep.

Ashton; loved your “let horses be horses” video
I do not get the other races to watch but we all know CC is no fluke!! Having won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness there is not much more to say; except I say, “other jockeys race fairly, stop boxing in as your plan, what purpose does it serve you unless you were paid to do it”. “Then do you have a conscience?” Sorry everyone, I have read a number of your posts of how the race went for CC and it upset me.
Judy B. Hope to hear new tales from the farm!!

Dear Sheena, Max, Peggy, Sally, Ann, Kathy R, Sandy, Marshall, debbie s, Sue Fredrick and Z Fans:
Arrived at the farm early today and Charlie, Hudson and Dubai were not in their stalls yet, as Angela was running late. I wandered toward the back of the barn and I saw one of the boarders with her 23 year old Percheron mix, Storm. I asked if I could give Storm a muffin. She loved it; so she had a few more. She is a sweet girl and looks and feels wonderful for her age. That wasn’t always the case. She came to the farm about the same time as Charlie, two years ago, and she was suffering from a few issues, mostly gastro related. With love and the right attention, she has recovered nicely. Here’s a photo of Storm enjoying the Stud Muffins. I’m holdimg Lola Mae in my left arm, but you can’t see her.
http://www.dropshots.com/littlebigred/date/2014-09-21/19:14:54
While I waited for Charlie, Hudson and Dubai to come in from the paddock, I left Lola Mae in the car and swept up the barn area in front of the stalls. When everyone was in, I gave them all muffins and carrots. Charlie, of course, came over with a mouth full of hay to get some muffins and carrots. As he opened his mouth for the treats, the hay would fall all over the clean floor. He’s too funny. When I bent down to pick up the hay on the floor, Charlie proceeded to nuzzle my head looking for more muffins. I obliged.
I went up and down the stalls feeding all of them treats, Charlie, Dakota, Archie, Bentley, Hudson. Dubai had a taste of muffin and seemed to enjoy it. He did not want another and wanted no part of the carrots. This is pretty typical of a horse right off the track. Charlie, I have to say, was the exception. He took to the carrots and mints immediately. Although, I know his trainer used to give him mints, so he was used to those. Here’s a couple of photos of Dubai from today. He is very friendly and was poking his nose out of his stall to say hello. Love and Hugs, JB

JudyB. Always enjoy your stories of the visits. Loved the photos. Storm is beautiful. Really like her name. Dubai has that Moose look. Any word on the emu?
Free the Moose! Goodnight DSB. Sweet dreams to Z and her young ones.

Dear Max:
Frankie was quiet today (no booming). He was in the pen next to the Minis with access to visit them through an open gate. So he seemed content. I don’t think Angela has plans to bring in another Emu. Love and Hugs, JB
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Yes, Dubai definitely has that “Moose” look. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Kind of glad for Frankie that he’s king emu of the place.

Dear JudyB.,
Love this post! Storm is a very beautiful girl! Your stud muffins are a terrific hit — maybe you should market them? TD is quite handsome and am happy to know that he has a personality to match. Love to Charlie and the whole gang!
Hugs and love to you and Lola Mae!
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Marshall:
Yes, TD is a handsome boy and very sweet. He’s getting more and more comfortable every day. Love and Hugs to you and Reilly, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy
They are all just gorgeous. I bet Dubai will be a Stud Muffins fan real soon. Give him a week or so to develope the taste. Know you had a wonderful time. Wish I could give them all a hug.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
Yes, Dubai is still getting used to his new surroundings. When he arrived on Thursday, he was kicking up a storm in the van and he was actually shaking when he backed out of it. Everything was new and scary to him. Now, he’s so much calmer. I’m sure in a little while he’ll be looking forward to the muffins too. I will give them each a hug from you next visit. Love and Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy
Yes please give them all a big hug from me.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Judy B,
I bet those guys just love to see you coming, knowing they are going to get those “special” home made treats. You guys did an amazing job cleaning the barn it looks like you could eat off the floors…..well almost, anyway, LOL. I so miss my horses when I see this pics, but I guess it’s nice to live vicariously thru you…..without the work!! So appreciate the pictures. love and hugs
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sue:
Yes, they see me coming and they know it’s time for treats. So smart. I have to say everyone worked so hard and the barn looks good. Thank you for noticing.
I wish you could at least have a horse or two nearby that you could visit. I can imagine how much you must miss not having horses in your life. You have some wonderful memories though, I’m sure. I am only to happy to share Charlie, Hudson and Dubai with you; and, of course, Frank the Emu too. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Sounds like a great visit Judy! Nice to see you AND the horses :-). I’m sure that Dubai will fall for the stud muffins eventually :-). Don’t wear yourself out working on the barn – we all need you!

My Dear Sheena:
You are too kind; you should say, the “old” lady with the muffins. I did get your email with Speedy’s Blog. Thank you. Hope it is just an abscess that can be taken care of with meds. Love and Hugs, JB
KathyR
Dear Judy:
Loved the latest from the farm: Charlie is a really joker – sounds a lot like the zany Leo in my paddock. Storm is a pretty thing, with one of those gorgeous ruffled manes, and Dubai looks like a typical edgy ex racehorse but has a very elegant face. I understand from the Elegant Emily that it takes a while for some racehorses to get over the high energy food they were fed during training, and a lot just never get treats, but I’m betting the Judy Muffins will win him over. I’d also suggest that a breeding pair of emus could be a problem – just remember the danger to outhouses if they all got into a cranky mood! Hugs KathyR
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
Yes, Dubai’s next test is joining the other geldings in the paddock. Charlie and the Gang will probably give him a bit of trouble at first, and then he’ll be welcomed in the group. They have to teach him his order in status.
Love, love your post. Can’t risk Emus knocking the “dunny” down. Love and Hugs to You, Tiny T and General
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.There’ll be big celebrations at your place when the deck guys leave! You must be thinking of Spitting Image if you google Elizabeth Windsor Twitter you should find it.Yes,Thank God for all those race days!Freedom for Moosie!Sheena.

Oh Happy Day!!.
Ash went out with Sally( (a friend and one of his 3 aunties). and a group of riders early this am and had so much fun.He loves the girls and there were some nice mares along.
I went down after lunch and took him for a walk and graze, such a lovely end of summer day. Sometimes I crouch down beside his head-he knows where I am and doesn’t comes into my space but he is just a touch away. It was sooooo relaxing just hanging out with him. He LOVES his grass. Then home to meet Anne(auntie #3) and we gave him a spa day. Put some timothy left over from lunch down outside and got the hose and bucket ready.(first time I have bathed a horse) and got some tips from Amanda, the barn manager. We were off and got him wet all over, soap next and used curry combs to get the deep dirt up,then a rinse and finally another rinse and got all the soap off.He was squeaky clean and such a good boy. Then used the long water remover-giggle-looks like a really long shoe horn and works great to remove the water.(forget the name but you will know).Used a few old towels too.Combed his mane and tail-looking good.
Then he was ready to go and we went for a nice walk in the sunshine and he dried off a lot. Just a gorgeous day (now I think of Geeky Gorgeous every time I use the word-smile) and we had so much fun.Ash went back in his stall and got some carrots and apple. (sadly I didn’t get a new batch of stud muffins made-aiming for Wed.) then out to his paddock. We did his face as a final touch and he just glistened in the sun By then he was almost completely dry..I could tell he really appreciated all the TLC very much.He was falling asleep standing outside when I left. It was so nice to see Ash look so handsome and content. Hugs to all.D
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear debbie s:
Love your post. You have a wonderful way of describing the day and activities that transports the reader to the sights and sounds. Ash must have looked “gorgeous” after his bath. Love and Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Debbie
Sounds like you had such a wonderful day. Sounds like the days I use to have with my horses. So much fun. It has been a beautiful day here today too.
So happy you had a great time.
KathyR
Dear debbie s:
Your day in the sun with Ash sounds perfect – agree with Judy, it’s a beautiful word picture. Have not yet got around to giving my little girl a wash – will need some assistance with that, but I bet they feel so much better with the excess dirt and grunge cleared away. Hugs KathyR
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Debbie S,
Love your descriptive posts……so cute. Hope he stays clean more than 5 minutes for you, mine never did. hugs

What a great day you had Debbie S! All you folks with your horses – I just can’t even imagine being able to do the things you do (but it’s nice to experience the adventures through your wonderful and descriptive posts :-) )

@Judy Berube–you started out with Papa Charlie, and now you have a whole herd! Love it and the pictures too. Wish I could upload. Lesson coming soon. Just have to find time. I see the stud muffins carried the day again., I have to remember to get those ingredients and make some.
It is so funny when we are walking Money along–he can grab what amounts to acreage in one fell swoop to chew on the way. he calls it “a bite for the road”.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Barb W:
Yes, it’s true, thanks to Angela. There are three TB’s, Charlie, Willow and Dubai, that she owns. Hudson, who is now owned by Deb and Amanda. Bentley, Flash, Archie and Dakota; a Quarter Horse and three paints that Angela also owns. It is a herd.
Love your description of Money’s “a bite for the road”. Would love to see photos of him. Love and Hugs, JB

So tired when I got home, failed to look for your gem first.Really enjoy your Sun. post.
I loved the photos of you and Storm and of Dubai!! Dubai does look curious and seems to be settling in really well.Sounds like a great day at the barn and am sure the stud muffins and carrots were a big hit! It is so nice that Frankie has access to the minis, wonderful how different animals we never expect to see together can get along.
Hugs,Debbie
ps I am reading the History of Old Friends,it is an absolute treasure and so is Michael Blowen. The stories and photos of the horses are wonderful and this book does the heart good.

Oh Gosh, I just read it a few minutes ago on Blood Horse. When things seem to settle a bit here we go again. Yes, many prayers for her to go to a good home. Just blows me away that so many of these wonderful horses get sold from their owners.
Guess I come from another planet. Nobody has to try to help me understand it.
I never will.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
I know, it’s so hard to bear sometimes. Let’s think positive and pray that she goes to a caring new owner. Love and Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy
I will pray real hard and think very positive for her.
shirleeinindy
Judy,
Since the Princess and Palace Malice had a “thing” perhaps his owners will buy her.
Don’t know how these people part with a horse that has done so much for them???
Max
shirlee. Looked like a full blown love affair to me.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Judy B,
Yes, I was very shocked to hear this as Mr. Stanco was so enamored of her. I hope she states here also……MANDY POPE where are you?? I just love this mare she has given so much to her owners. love and hugs.
Barbara Wood
I will never understand selling a horse either. When all decided long ago that we would eat oatmeal 3 times a day rather than sell Money. Prayers for her future.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy, Shrilee, Sue, Barb and Z Fans:
Let’s all think MANDY POPE. Love and Hugs, JB
lauraj_cincinnati
Princess of Sylmar is a racehorse, not a pet. Some people who race horses are not into breeding horses, which is why they sell their horses to people who are. Breeding is not something that should be undertaken lightly. Folks, just because she is going up for sale, does not mean she is in any kind of trouble! It’s F-T, not Mike’s Auction or New Holland. Sheesh, you’d think she had one foot on a truck to Mexico. There is no particular reason to think that whoever buys her will mistreat her in any way, or fail to value her. She has great value as a potential broodmare, and she will most likely sell for millions. That’s a big investment.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Laura:
What you say is very true. I think we’re all just hoping she is purchased by a US buyer so that she will remain in America. So many of us are fond of “Princess” and would like to keep track of her. Love and Hugs, JB

September 22 Cherokee Devotional
Like attracts like. If we give up, so will others. If we cry, so will they. But if we decide this is a new beginning, others will take courage. We influence other people. Our attitudes send out ripples of feeling-like the scent of flowers that floats on air currents. What we think and say sets the stage for what is to happen. We can change our minds, our words. our attitudes, and we stop crying. We act like our prayers are already answered and take steps to show we believe it. When the early morning sun breaks through the far side of the woods, the dark places are lighted and much healing takes place. And so it is with us.
Great Spirit, you lived first, and you are older than all need.

Dear Sheena,
Yes, the dreaded “M” day! Thankfully we have socks to hide out in! They have scattered Joey’s ashes, will be posting video. Joey died of meningitis. Dr. Bob will more fully explain later. Yes, Mango’s mom keeps a “clean machine.” Would love to see their reunion! Undoubtedly Kimberly is getting sick due to stress. That was pretty funny about the woman thinking Fubu was a stuffed animal. You know Zoe was extremely tired after the cancer walk. Sorry to hear of Leo’s passing. RIP sweet Leo. Yes, the puppy mill farms are horrible. Haven is a gorgeous cat. That’s great the family is increasing in size. The “kids” and I are doing fine. Snuggle into your sock. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

Missed your post yesterday,thank-you
Meant to write earler,I loved the photos of General,he is a magnificent dog and so beloved. I smiled,he takes up the whole couch and it was fun to see him supervising your blanket cleaning for Thurzel.I am happy he is feeling better and hope it continues. I love your posts about Thurzel!! You have the gift of bringing your experience to us in a way that we feel like we are with you.Wow-last visit was magic.
A little aside you will smile at .Yesterday Sally said that while Ash was going along the river trail he was caressing the rear end of two mares-who seemed to enjoy it.What a boy! He was so funny, when we brought him back to his stall,I forgot his treats and went to clean up buckets etc.I came back into the barn and his head was peering over the stall guard and he was looking down the aisle for me as if to say,”What about my treats!” Thank goodness I went in at that moment or he may have just broke loose and walked outside again to remind me.Never a dull moment. Big hugs,Debbie
