Happy Wednesday!
As you may know, we were in Kentucky last week visiting Zenyatta, 14Z, and Ziconic. We posted photos from Lane’s End on Instagram and Facebook throughout the week, and we were happy to see so many of you following!
It still felt like summer in Kentucky, and we arrived to a beautiful full moon. We brought lots of pears, carrots, and mints with us and spent time with the horses every morning and afternoon.
This trip was extra special because Jeanne, April, and Jackie from Mayberry Farm were in town for the yearling sale. They were thrilled to spend time with us at Lane’s End and to meet Ziconic and Z Princess for the first time. It won’t be long before Ziconic goes to their the farm in Ocala for training.
Scroll down to see more photos from our visit. One of our favorites is available in the shop today!
Today’s post is dedicated to Street Cry, who will live on through Zenyatta, her children, and champions around the world.
Enjoy!

Dear Judy.I so enjoyed hearing about your visit to the farm.I hope TD’s abscess will burst and then heal up,Boo is a lovely girl.I had to laugh Boo was one of my nicknames years ago!!Don’t ask why!I pray the horses will find good, safe homes,It saddens me that their original owners don’t seem to care.
Poor Speedy was ill overnight Rachel only had an hour’s sleep but he is a little better today. He had dreadful diarrhea.Hope he will get better soon.I lit a candle for “Remember me Thursday”for Sparkle who always supported these shelters.Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT Little Cap Hercules Dubai Frank and all the Sweeties.Love and hugs SheenaX

Dear Sheena:
Now you have peaked my interest! Boo, is just the sweetest. Thanks for your good wishes for Dubai. He might have hurt himself when he was kicking so much in the van and now an abscess formed. I don’t know.
Yes, I hope Speedy is better soon too. Poor little guy. Love and Hugs, JB

Wise Dan invades Canada in 2013 and takes no prisoners. Put a smile on your face with this video of one of the finest moments of the most interesting horse in the world. The Canadian commentators have nothing but praise for Wise Dan who got a rare standing ovation at Woodbine. The sensational Wise Dan.

JudyB. Dan looked impatient with Uncle Johnny during that interview after the race. He was possibly thinking about meeting up with those zebras for some lattes.

Great to see this race again. Our friend Brenda S was there to see it in person and brought me a poster of Dan signed by Johnny V! Nice to also see the beautiful Za Approval and Trade Storm’s first attempt.

A “little” Ash News
Ash usually sees me when I get out of the car,and he spins on his back legs to make a B line into the barn from his out area..As I look down the barn aisle(he is at the very end) his head is over the stall gate and his eyes and his expression say”Here I am! I’m Ready! Let’s Go!”
Yesterday I went down to give Ash a handwalk-HW only while a disc heals. While I miss riding I love spending time on the ground with horses.(Ash was out for a ride with another “auntie” earlier but was keen to break loose and have more fun).
As we leave the driveway I look under his neck(can’t see over his back,he is 17 hands-a big boy). All is clear ,too much roadwork along this road so we go to find a quiet place and some peace. He loves a grassy strip not far away and I say “OK” and he settles on some good grass.Ash walks then head down when he spots good grass, then a little ramble, head down etc.He can stay in one spot for a long time and the little rambles are fine with me – lets him be a horse (does not have pasture, wish he did!).A golfer tees off over the fence and Ash stays steady.I hear the golfer complain at a bad shot and I am sooo happy just hanging out with my boy.
Ahhhhhh. Yum,Ash is relishing every bite! He sees an old brown limb with curly brown leaves on the ground around the corner and his head raises up-waaay up-and suddenly I feel very small. He settles and relaxes. I hear, the sound of grass ripping and the rhythm of him chewing,he meanders along to enjoy the feast Lots of delicious dandelion leaves too and even some blackberry leaves-a bonus..A lady comes by and says, “What a beautiful horse” and I feel happy. He is a gentleman and deserves to be dignified. His coat is so shiny after his bath.It is an ash colour with a dark dorsal line down his spine and bits of back stripes on his legs.(Ash is 3/4 warmblood and 1/4 quarter horse, the colour comes from the quarter horse). The size doesn’t come from the quarter horse! This lady comes over and pats him and visits and tells me that when work slows down she really wants to get back to riding. Then she is off and walks with a lift in her step .We stay awhile longer, then move on and enjoy a nice walk. Ash is satisfied, his head drops low and he is blowing-a happy sound.I practise a few stops and he stops solidly when I do.We do a few pivots -and continue walking just enjoying being together.Ash did not have many walks when he was a jumper and we are venturing further, learning together.
Oh no,this is a book- now comes the cute part,so hang in there. When we got back to the barn, off comes the halter and after I clean his hooves he knows where I am going.I leave the stall and Ash watches me get the famous yogurt container(with apple and carrot chunks inside). He is waiting with baited breath, following me with anticipation. When I return he steps away from his bucket in the corner and waits politely while I dump the goodies in.When I step back he makes a B line and dives in.I muck out abit and fluff things up and notice a hole with water in the paddock outside.I take the empty yogurt container and use it to get the pebbly footing from the sides and pour it into the hole.Every time I lower the container into the hole Ash’s nose follows it down, almost touching it.I know he is thinking,”Where are those tasty apples and carrots!” He follows me in and out as I clean up (like Tully around the house) and then I remember,”The stud muffins!!” I go get them and give him a couple. His eyes are wide at the heavenly taste and his lips are smacking-mmm mmm. Then I ducked under the stall guard and mumbled as I went by him,”You really liked those muffins didn’t you” (am always talking to him).I was putting a broom away and caught something from the side of my vision. He was leaning over the guard with his head bobbing up and down,up and down in huge movements- saying,”Yes I did! Yes I did!!” Too cute.
Today I started on a country lane, at the end it led to a road that use to be quiet that now has a huge build happening. I was going to turn back, but Ash looked at the block and started to walk forward.I thought, here goes. We survived, but cannot say it was relaxing Green fencing, diggers mouths reaching over the top,etc..Ash was very brave.I was glad to be back at the barn. When I left he was happily eating his hay and dunking it to his delight. (and mine).
You never know what is around the corner.I am doing a surveillance drive before our next walk. Too many changes for an ol gal! Trusty Ash kept me safe.
Goodnight all,
Debbie

September 26 Cherokee Devotional
Late evening is a good time to walk down the field road where cows graze on tufts of new green grass. Late rains have brought new growth to the meadows and wild flowers are coloring the slopes and soft, rolling hills. Field sparrows talk about intruders and a killdeer cries for attention so she can lead us away from her second brood. The voice of the redbird, tojuhwa, calls to its mate somewhere in the deep woods. This time brings to remembrance things gone by and the shape of things to come. It is peaceful, prayerful, and personal. Even the sunset that spreads rouge across the horizon is a reflection of heart and soul. It is a joy, a feast of days, a high point of life, a quiet moment when rest is needed.
Earth and the great weather move me…have carried me away…and move my inward parts with joy.

Dear Kathy.I get lost in your posts and start to day dream!I must get up earlier to get through all my furbabies!Alas, housework comes first in the mornings!I haven’t even read Hovis yet.
So sad to hear Fubu was in so much pain he had to visit the doc, seems he had suggested cutting down on his pain-meds (because of his kidneys I expect)but no good!So he had an injection, hopefully he will improve, got a visit to Petco though!
Mango was so happy to see her Momma as were the other little ones. She must be tired after that long journey.Looking forward to her morning chat today.Lovely works of art of Joey from the UK.Lil Bub turned up there I’ve followed her a long time.
We’ve got a felt Marty now! He won’t be long before reaching 13,000 that’s a lot of friends for a rat!I loved Zoe’s story about Jacob she has such a beautiful personality. How can you not love her!Have a great Friday.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly.Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.

Dear Judy,KathyR and Marshall,
Thank-you for your comments on news from Ash.Much appreciated.
Dear Max
So happy Hovis is starting to feel better.I loved the photo of him and as usual laughed when I read his news, esp the line about CPR and the Cool New Shoes Man.Too funny ! I am going to have to buy his book and wish him great success with it.
ps so embarrassed about the posts, but will have all that enthusiasm on Oct 4 for Wise Dan and did love to see him run!!! Yes,I am a big fan and thanks for your comment to help me move on gracefully-smile.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Poor Fubu. His situation is so precarious. He sure is a fighter but I’m afraid of what all that battling is doing to him. Mango was so happy to be back in Mommy’s arms. Yes, I saw the artwork from the UK of our dear Joey. Very nice. I saw Lil Bub, too. Haven’t checked on Marty yet. Will do so next. I know what you mean about how long it takes to get through all the furbabies! Yes, Zoe’s story about Jacob was a real tear-jerker. Zoe’s personality is beautiful. Such a special little soul. And her momma is quite special too, it seems. I wish I lived closer to Scottsdale and could meet them in person. Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

Dear Sheena,
Marty meeting the “felt Marty” is just too precious! Also loved the pic of him with the drop of cream on his little rat nose. LOVE our Marty.

Dear Sheena:
Just read that the Queen’s Estimate has been disqualified from her Ascot placing. Seems rather unfair since it appears to be the feed was contaminated. Love and Hug, JB

Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Yes, seems like an extremely vigorous application of “rules are rules.” Honestly!
Max
JudyB. The beak rules by the rules, and principle of equity seldom applies. Look what they did to the Moose.
Moose, it’s been a long time. Let the Moose go free.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
So true; was a very harsh penalty for Moose. This seems a bit ludicrous, though, as the problem was with the feed and not given to the horse by the trainer. Loose The Moose! Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. This sounds like a strict liability issue. If the horse tests positive, the rule is enforced. It would be unfair to the other horses in the race who tested clean if it were otherwise. The beak however imposed no fines so that was the consideration for the situation being unintentional.
Beak, let go of the Moose.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Well, that makes perfect sense. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. It is still a shame that Estimate had to lose that placing. However sometimes it works in favor of our favorites, such as Noble Mission getting that win awarded retroactively because the winning horse tested positive after the race. Keep going Noble Mission.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Yes, It’s good that NM benefited from that. Godspeed NM. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Update for Hovis fans:
Hovis has had the nerve block, and despite his unhappiness over the whole thing, the loss of feathers seems minimal (at least to the untrained eye). A small circle is gone on each side of the lower leg, but for the most part, the feathers are still quite visible.
His Mum said that he is going to Newmarket for an MRI and another opinion. I hope being that close to thoroughbreds isn’t going to be too stressful for him. His vet referred to his treatment as “the gold standard of care! ” His Mum speculates that the vet doesn’t want to be dealing with 2500 angry fans if all is not well.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sandy:
Thanks for this update on our Hovis. Hoping he has a good report and is back to his old self soon. Love and Hugs, JB
Max

Poor Hovis. Dan has already dated a Budweiser Clydesdale. Zebras love Dan.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max and Z Fans:
Dan is the most interesting horse in the world! Power Up Hovis, PM, CC, Treve, ROC, Big Trouble, Dubai, Sir, Reilly, Angel and all who are ill our injured. Beast (get well) and Snake listen to Max. Dan, your the best. Street Cry, gone too soon. TT, love you forever. Loose The Moose! Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Zebras are members of the horse family who have never been successfully domesticated. Lord Rothschild did have some zebras who were trained to pull carriages, but zebras in general resolutely remain wild. Dan must be darn good in the romance department if they want to date him. We’re talking “several”. But then those girls probably can see that Dan is the most interesting horse in the world. He prefers to win.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Indeed, he does. These are some very smart girl Zebras. Love and Hugs, JB

Just got home from the woods with Tully and had a short barn visit with Ash and the gang down there. It is pouring here-got out my gumboots today!
I am so sorry about the disqualification of Estimate, seems unfair as it was unintentional.

Hi Max
Ash does look gray in that photo with the summer sun. He is actually more brown with gray shades- dark mane, tail and legs.He has good sized ears, which we all love and big brown expressive eyes.
Max

Judy,no worries and thanks again for posting the pictures for me!!!!!

@Sandy—thanks for the update on our guy, Hovis.
debbie s.
Hi Max
No,Ash is not a gray.He is a dark “grullo”, a colour from the quarter horse. He has a body that is an ash colour-brownish gray- and a dark dorsal stipe, dark mane and tail, and dark zebra like stripes on his legs.
Max
debbie s. Thanks for the explanation. Now I get it. He’s a really nice looking horse. See why you love him. That Tully is a heart breaker too.

Ziconic is so beautiful. Princess Z is also I so enjoy the pictures. I love watching them grow up and begin there training. These horses are loved and they give love back. I wish I could be there just to help take care of them.

Dear Max
Thanks for the nice compliments for Tully and Ash.
When I need to remember what is important in life all I need to do is hear Ash’s whinny and see the look on his face when he knows he is going out or watch Tully and laugh as she does her happy dance with legs flying in the air. They teach me a lot.
debbie s.
Dear Max
Thanks for the nice compliments for Tully and Ash.
