Happy Wednesday!
As you may know, we were in Kentucky last week visiting Zenyatta, 14Z, and Ziconic. We posted photos from Lane’s End on Instagram and Facebook throughout the week, and we were happy to see so many of you following!
It still felt like summer in Kentucky, and we arrived to a beautiful full moon. We brought lots of pears, carrots, and mints with us and spent time with the horses every morning and afternoon.
This trip was extra special because Jeanne, April, and Jackie from Mayberry Farm were in town for the yearling sale. They were thrilled to spend time with us at Lane’s End and to meet Ziconic and Z Princess for the first time. It won’t be long before Ziconic goes to their the farm in Ocala for training.
Scroll down to see more photos from our visit. One of our favorites is available in the shop today!
Today’s post is dedicated to Street Cry, who will live on through Zenyatta, her children, and champions around the world.
Enjoy!

Dear Sheena
Before I read about the choir I just felt those beautiful songs were from Africa.I closed my eyes and saw Glesni and Monty and the youngsters flying there, with beautiful wingspans and free.Although not together as before, see them arriving safe and know Deri will be making her presence known. What strong girls and magnificent, kind, patient boys in the family. This was emotional for me,how very lovely Sheena.
With thanks and love,
Debbie

What a nice story! Just think, this time next year it could be Zi and Rachel’s filly passing each other. Both are on their way to Florida to learn racing. Could we have a romance?

Dear Debbie. So glad you enjoyed the choir.Hearing the African song made me realise how far away our little family are,They say if the ospreys can survive their first 2 yrs they have a chance but,of course, we all know that’s not always true as with Nora.I always say a prayer for them each night. As an exceptional father Monty deserves one of his offspring to return to the UK.
Hope you’ve had a lovely day with Tully, maybe visited Ash too.Love and hugs Sheena.

My Miss Aurelia, Dreaming of Julia retired from racing

Dear Bluegrass Girl:
A million thanks for the photo of The Opera House and her foal! I loved this (then) filly from when John Singleton first acquired her. She was a failure at the track, and Singo sold her at a Magic Millions sale, but I just couldn’t find out who had bought her in New Zealand. She was used in a beer ad for a company Singo owns, which just seemed wrong for such an elegant little horse. Hope someone kind will buy her little one – they have a problem with skin cancer because of their coats. But just so pleased you found this one! You’re a gem! Hugs KathyR

Dear Max, Sheena, Peggy, Ann, Kathy R, Sandy, Marshall, Barb W, Sue Fredrick, Sally, debbie s and Z Fans:
Went to the farm this after noon to meet a new TB that one of the Boarders adopted from Suffolk Downs yesterday. She is a six year old Bay mare, Turnagain Bay, by Medalist out of Slick Punch (Two Punch). She stands 17.1 and has the most sweet disposition. I was giving her hugs and kisses along with mints. Charlie and Hudson ate all the muffins I had left, so I’ll be making more.
These are photos of “Boo”, Turnagain Bay’s call name, because the blaze on her face resembles a ghost.

In the photo below, Boo is looking over her stall at Charlie.

Looks like Dubai may have developed an abscess on one of his feet. The farrier told Angela he thinks it’s going to pop soon, so she is keeping a watch on him. He was running like the wind today for quite a while and then he pulled up sore, so he’s going back in the round pen.
I attempted to groom Charlie, but he was moving around and turning toward me to get more treats so I waited until it was feeding time. He was occupied with his grain and I was able to groom him with only a few interruptions when he came up for air to get a carrot. He’s too funny.
Found out today that another open house will be held at Suffolk Downs on Saturday. There are 80 horses still needing homes. Any horses that do not find homes by October 13th will be going to foster homes until permanent ones can be found. Angela has room to take four TBs. But they won’t be coming to the farm until after the 13th. Hopefully a lot of them will be adopted on Saturday. Love and Hugs, JB
Donna Z
Judy,
Sorry to hear about Dubai’s abscess. I’m surprised that the farrier didn’t tell Angela to soak the foot in warm water & Epsom salts 1-2X/day to encourage the abscess to pop sooner. She can also pack the foot with icthammol ointment (black salve) to help draw the infection out of the foot. When soaking the foot, a dishpan usually works better than a bucket because it is not as tall.
Kathy R,
I really enjoy hearing about Thurzel & you. It sounds like she is really beginning to bond with you & looks forward to your visits!
Our Princess is growing so quickly! Thank you Team Z for all the beautiful photos! Kyle, you take the best pictures!
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Donna Z:
Thank you so much for your knowledgeable info. Angela may do just that. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Ooh – Sorry to hear about Dubai. I hope he will be OK. Sounds like both you and Charlie had a good afternoon. He probably thinks you are “too funny” as well :-)
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sandy:
Yes, Angela will keep an eye on his foot and then treat it once the abscess pops. I don’t know if she’ll try soaking his foot to try to pop it so it will drain.
I’m sure Charlie finds me hysterical. I’m still learning how to groom him and sometimes I have a difficult time sliding the stall door open and then closing it again. He must think I’m a real Hoot!
We have to make sure we always close his stall door and fasten it. He knows how to pull it open and will just walk out of the barn. He’s done that before and that put Angela wise to him. Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Judy B.,
I sure hope they will all be adopted into loving homes. Bless the angel, Angela!
“Boo” is quite the beauty — her blaze really does look ghostly. Cool!! What a sweetheart! Congrats to her and the Boarder with the kind heart who adopted her.
Hope TD’s foot will heal quickly and that he will have no further problems with it.
All the best to both of the newcomers!
Lots of Hugs and Love

Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Ann:
Boo was born in Maryland; bred by Bowman and Higgins Stable. She’s only had one trainer and he purchased her and raced her at the end of her career. Angela’s Boarder obtained her directly from him. I think she was loved and treated very well throughout her racing years, as she is such a lovable girl. Love and Hugs, JB
Ann NC
JB, that is really nice to know. Bowman and Higgins bred another sweetheart, Chromie’s Mom!

Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I don’t think I ever knew that you had a horse Laura J. Good that you can keep tabs on him and celebrate a win even from afar.
LauraJ (Cincinnati)
I once owned 10% of him as part of a partnership, from the time he was 2 up until his third start. He threw clunkers in his first three races, and we later found that his breathing was obstructed. The managing partner decided to sell him rather than have surgery done. His new owners got him for $1000, did the surgery, and now have a horse that’s earned more than $96K and finishes in the top three more often than not. Another win or a couple of seconds will put him over six figures.
It’s nice for me that he runs at Charles Town, as they have free live video and I can watch him run. Plus, they have decent purses. I don’t worry about him too much as he is doing a good job keeping himself in hay.
Anyway, that’s the story. From time to time I think about joining another partnership, but currently the money I used to spend on him is going to my riding lessons. :-)
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Laura J:
It’s good that you are able to keep track of him. Know how much you love him. He’s a talented boy. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Boy, I’ll bet the folks who decided to sell are kicking themselves now. So nice that he runs at a place you can watch :-)
Riding lessons!! Wow! Not in my wildest imagination could I see myself getting on a horse (well . . . or anything else for that matter that requires “working” knees). but I really enjoy the stories from those of you who are so lucky :-)

Congrats to, Better Step Aside. Love that name.

P.S. to Laura J.– I just looked up Better Step Aside and saw that he is a son of Eddington. We enjoyed meeting Eddington at Claiborne. He was beautiful, and very big!

Q&A with Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith
By Sarah Favot, Pasadena Star-News Posted: 09/24/14
ARCADIA>> When it comes to the big money, high-pressure races, Santa Anita’s Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith is unmatchable.
Smith, 49, has won more Breeders’ Cup races than any other jockey — and is hoping to add to the total during this year’s Breeders’ Cup, the world championships of horseracing. Anomg his mounts in 2014 will be Shared Belief. A gelding owned in part by radio personality Jim Rome, Shared Belief could face Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome in the meet’s highlight: The Breeder’s Cup Classic.
Smith recently sat down for an interview after a morning work-out at Santa Anita’s Clockers’ Corner. He says he’s at the top of his game and explained how he handles himself when the stakes are high and all eyes are on the finish line.

September 25 Cherokee Devotional
When we were young we had to ask permission to do everything that made us happy. We still want permission to be happy. The child in us wants to be a happy adult, but there’s no one to tell us we may. Have we ever been freed to give permission to ourselves? Can we be at liberty to follow tradition and still be an individual? Can we resemble a parent but be free to improve? Do we have permission to outlive, outdo, outwork all those who went before us? Too many feel they must adhere to their roots rather than having admiration and respect for them. Instead of being caretakers of the past and feeling we must have their illnesses, live a certain number of years, and say what was good enough for them is good enough for us-we can give ourselves permission to build on their foundations. It breaks the chains for them as well as for us.
To us the ashes of our ancestors are sacred…
