Happy Wednesday!
As you may know, we were in Kentucky last week visiting Zenyatta, 14Z, and Ziconic. We posted photos from Lane’s End on Instagram and Facebook throughout the week, and we were happy to see so many of you following!
It still felt like summer in Kentucky, and we arrived to a beautiful full moon. We brought lots of pears, carrots, and mints with us and spent time with the horses every morning and afternoon.
This trip was extra special because Jeanne, April, and Jackie from Mayberry Farm were in town for the yearling sale. They were thrilled to spend time with us at Lane’s End and to meet Ziconic and Z Princess for the first time. It won’t be long before Ziconic goes to their the farm in Ocala for training.
Scroll down to see more photos from our visit. One of our favorites is available in the shop today!
Today’s post is dedicated to Street Cry, who will live on through Zenyatta, her children, and champions around the world.
Enjoy!

@KathyR, Ann NC, Peggy(N), shirleeinindy (and anyone else I have inadvertently omitted)–thanks so much for your kind remarks about the Money video. Considering that I am the one who tried to talk our daughter out of buying a horse, it backfired, and I am totally smitten. Hugs to all.

Yes,his exercise rider, groom and others will miss Flower Alley and he will miss them.
He is currently in quarantine and not avail for visiting on the Oct. tour of Three Chimneys. The wheels are already in motion to send him to South Africa.
Wish him love and good care in his new home,so sorry he is leaving.
On a happy note,Game on Dude’s owners have decided to send him to a Retirement Home and I am crossing my fingers for Old Friends!!!
Janet Newman
Dear Debbie s.
I will certainly miss getting the chance to see Flower Alley on my visit to Three Chimneys since he will be in quarantine in October. I wonder of Will Take Charge will be there yet. I know they have to give them time to get used to a new routine.
It would be great if Game on Dude goes to Old Friends. I will cross my fingers too.

For everyone here who prayed for Cirrus des Aigles to get better, it must have worked. The old warrior is back, and is racing again soon in the Prix Dollar. Trainer says that CD is his old self and could race in the Arc, if they’d let him. He’s an amazing horse.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Great news on CDA. Wishing him Godspeed. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max.Yes,I heard the good news about CDA.He’s a warrior for sure.Taghrooda is having a racecourse gallop tomorrow, she was in season last time at York but they are not making excuses. She’s much better now and has put on weight. Our Dave has put his foot in it by mentioning a conversation he had with Her Majesty about the Scottish Referendum.I’d love to be a fly on the wall at their next meeting!!The Moose must be free to rule his country!PU Hovis.Sheena.

With apologies to those who have seen this or posted it earlier, I thought this story, sent to me by another Dumpling, was appropriately uplifting.

Judy,
So happy for Pal Mal. Whether he races again or not, he will go home to Kentucky to retire and will remain there. Three Chimneys is a great farm and takes wonderful care of their stallions. Like the fact that they ride them every day for exercise. Seems to really prolong their lives and health.

Palace Malice Interest Sold, May Race Again
By Ron Mitchell The Blood-Horse Sept. 23, 2014
Three Chimneys Farm has purchased a 50% interest in Palace Malice and the multiple grade I winner could go back into training in 2015, according to an announcement from Dogwood president Cot Campbell. He will ultimately enter stud at Three Chimneys, near Midway, Ky.
Campbell had announced Sept. 5 that the 4-year-old son of Curlin was retired after being diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left hind cannon bone. The injury, detected after his sixth-place finish as the 3-5 favorite in the Aug. 2 Whitney Stakes (gr. I), would heal with several months of inactivity and he could race as a 5-year-old, Dogwood said they were advised by equine surgeon Larry Bramlage. (Related story)

Sue Noel in Sun Valley,ID
@ Judy Berube-Thanks so much for saying you missed me!!! We’ve just survived what must have been our busiest,tourist-filled,summer EVER,here in Sun Valley!! Since my home computer is down and my ipad has been misplaced in my home re-organization project (obviously, much needed!), I am checking the blog and writing at work, when I can catch a minute between customers,I’ve not been able to post much for awhuile!
Have lots of funny stories about Barnaby and Traveller which I’ll post a little at a time, and some may have to be continued–hope you won’t mind!! The main thing is to let you know that they are fine and have had a great summer. Except for a couple of CRAZY days of rain and hail, our weather has been lovely. Now,we’re into the “indian summer”,where we’re getting the fall colors, with warm days–and–most of the tourists have gone home!!
Aren’t we all blessed to have had so many wonderful pictures of Zenny and her “babies”??? As we like to say now,her “tiny” babies!! I want to just walk in to each and every photo and just hang out for awhile. I do SO love the photos of Ann with Zenyatta–so beautiful to see the love they share!!
Was so sad to hear about Street Cry. And–all the problems about Sir!!! I surely hope he reaches a safe harbor!! He deserves to live out his years being loved!!
@ Kathy R-LOVE reading about “tiny” Thurzel–know how you feel about getting the board bill-it’s my favorite bill to pay! As you said–it proves they are ours!!! I still get a lump in my throat when I drive up and see Barnaby at the fence –he is a walking miracle and I will strive all of my life to try to deserve him!!
I realize that I never told you the story about the Obstacle Event we did at River Sage, just before they came up to East Fork for the summer!! It was a fun day,all in all. When we first got there we took photos of each other in our fancy “hunt” outfits–some of which may end up on our respective Christmas cards. As the others arrived, all in casual western attire,of course, they seemed to get a kick out of us. We had groomed the horses to a fare-thee-well and they really looked sharp! The first part of the event was held in the big outdoor arena, with lots of ground work and various mounted exercises. There were about 15 horses in the arena and I think their riders were impressed that Banaby was really good with all of it,being ridden in juist a halter!! Of course, whenI am putting it on him,I always call it his bridle and he never wears it except when he is being ridden. When I take it off,he even yawns really big and stretches his mouth out just as though he had had a bit in it!! Really cute!!
After that,we all went into the obstacle course and proceeded to lead them all around, showing them each thing and walking them through. He even followed me through the big frame, covered in long balloons that bonked him in the face as we went through. He did everything without balking, UNTIL “the dreaded water hazard’!!!! It was a shallow square thing, probably 10 or 12 feet across, each side. It almost looked like a big sandbox frame, draped in black plastic, tucked underneath. I let him watch other horses go through, just being led from the side. Most, after a few tries, were able to do.it. I led Barnaby up to it and he was terrified. I didn’t have waterproof boots on to just lead him through, walking through the water myself. One of the instructors there, a big cowboy, who is a SUPERB rider and trainer, proceeded to spend the next 20 minutes trying to get him to go through–no luck!! Finally, I got across from Barnaby on the other side of the “pond” and started calling him to come. It was just hilarious–he moved right to the middle on the other side as I was coaxing him. He looked me right in the eye and gave me a look that said,”I know you’re calling me and I WANT to come,I’m trying and I know I can do it”–then he would put one foot part way in and then pull it right back and look at me as if to say “I can’t–it’s too scary’! People watching me must have thought I was nuts,I was bent over ,slapping my hands on my knees, saying “come on Barnaby, come, you can do it” just as though I were calling a dog!! But,it’s the only way that he even TRIED to do it!! He wanted to come to me,and tried several more times, but he would just put a foot in a have to pull back. The look on his face was so sweet–he was just too scared to do it!!! We finally had to break for lunch and after that, Sue had to leave for work so we never DID get to ride through the obstacles, after paying 65.00 apiece for the clinic!!! It was great fun though and we’ll do it again next year, though, hopefully,we won’t have to leave early—and–I’ll wear my waterproof riding boots,so I can just wade through the water with Barnaby!! I think,if he sees that I don’t sink,he’ll know how shallow the water is and won’t be so afraid. It is so interesting that big and majestic as he is,sometimes,he is frightened by small things and needs lots of comforting. Of course,I’m always up for that!!!! Just wish you all could have seen the earnest look on his face when he was trying to overcome his fear and come to me!
Well.this is turning into a book,so guess I’d best sign off for now. Know that I LOVE reading everyone’s posts and that Barnaby,Traveller,Boss Mare Sue,and I,send our love to you all–and to sweet Zenny and all of her “tiny” babies!!!! May you all have a good and peaceful night!!!!
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sue:
Just wonderful to hear from you and the “Adventures of Barnaby and Traveler”. I think Barnaby did really well in the obstacle course and deserves extra hugs and treats for the water hazard effort. He really tried. He’ll do it next time. Glad you are enjoying lovely weather and that all of you are well. Would love to see the photos. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Sue:
Delighted to see your post and get all the news on Barnaby and the water feature: probably looked like the Pacific Ocean to him, the dear bloke. Reckon Judy muffins would do the trick though, but the gumboots are also a good idea. Know exactly what you mean with the lump in the throat approaching the farm: in my case it’s the tears of happiness, which I think puzzle my little girl. Look forward to more stories, as Judy said the “Adventures of Barnaby and Traveler”. Hugs KathyR

Dear Sue,
So glad to hear from you! Am glad that you had a prosperous tourist season and that now things can settle down. Love hearing about your Barnaby and think he was quite brave to attempt that water obstacle repeatedly at your encouraging. It is obvious how much he loves you, and you, him! Look forward to hearing more “Adventures of Sue and Barnaby”!
Take care! Hugs and Love

Dear Barbara
I loved the story about the young woman who is leagally blind and her trusty mount Rio.
Such a connection- he is taking excellent care of her,on her part she trusts him. A great team and wonderful partnership!

So glad so many enjoyed the uplifting story of the blind woman and her horse.
@Sue Noel–thanks for checking in. We are glad you were so busy at work. Job security for sure! Poor Barnaby and the “pond of terror”. I can certainly identify with that. They can be so brave, and then sometimes the things we think are no big deal are HUGE to them. Hugs to Barnaby and Traveller.
Tonight at the farm, we saw a flock of Canadian Geese fly overhead in their “V” formation. A lovely sight. Fall is truly here, and it is beautiful.

I’m surprised that Game On Dude will go to a retirement home. He is in such good shape I thought he might have gone on to a second career. Like a stable pony or a dressage horse.etc. He has such an attitude and personality I can see him enjoying a new challenge. He has caring owners so I’m sure they will do what is best for Dude.

September 24 Cherokee Devotional
Too much time is spent trying to be something that has no substance. If a garden is planted in rocky soil, the seeds may germinate but the plans will die because they have no root system-no place to put down their feet. It is better to be the pillar than it is to tie all our hopes and aims to a piece of artificial scenery that blows over in the wind. What appears to be solid and dependable should be examined. A two-faced person should be looked at twice. What to rely on depends on what we think is important. Who do we go to when something troubles us? What is in the heart-and what have we planted to get a harvest? Invisible things have more to them than most things we see in the world.
The Black Hills are the house of gold for our Indians. We want it to get rich.
