Happy Wednesday!
Zenyatta and 13Z are settling into their summer routine. As you can see, Zenyatta spends her days grazing and rolling in the grass. Her colt is acclimating well to his new paddock mate. The boys can’t resist a nip & tug of the halter.
Also, at the end of this post, see a short clip Alys took of Zenyatta and her colt a few days after the birth.
Check back later in the week for updates to the Video and Photo sections along with new print additions to the Zenyatta Shop.
Enjoy!

The post position draws are in… I’m still picking Revolutionary to win. Although, I would be thrilled if the ‘girls’ pulled off the huge upset. :)

Dear Keta:
Thank you. She’s gorgeous. Hugs, JB

Like Marsha, am wondering if Zenyatta has been bred this year. Can’t wait to hear some news about this. In the mean time, am reading a very good book, “Jack From Grit to Glory” (The True Story of Jack Van Berg, an American Horse Racing Legend) by Chris Kotulak.

The word is she was been bred to War Front on May 8th. There has been no official word given by Jerry and Ann but there are two people that have confirmed when they took a tour of Claiborne Farm that they were told War Front was bred to Zenyatta this year. So we will see.

Thank you, Amanda. I know it’s hearsay, but Claiborne is a pretty solid source. Love their tour and it’s usually given by the stallion manager, if it’s a private tour.

Happy Friday!
I was reading on another part of this site about the speculation over who is the next Z-Daddy baby. I noticed a lot of people remarking about the lineage of several of the ‘guesses’ which made me start wondering, yet again.
This winter I read the book, “Sham, When Great Was Second Best” and one of the sections of the book referenced race horse lineage. The quote from a breeder in the book said once you get back to four generations, lineage won’t matter anymore. In other words, Man O’War no longer be influencing race horses any more. I would have to go back and re-read the entire book to find out the breeder’s name, but most of those quoted were the ‘old-school’ breeders from back in the 1970’s, like the Phipps. Do you agree with this? If not, why not?
Also, on another note, I was going to ask this question on that part of the website, but only ‘registered’ users could get on over there. When I tried registering, they asked WHY I wanted to join. I stopped at that point, because I didn’t know if there was a right or wrong answer to this question. Help?

… Man o’ War WILL no longer be…. (they should allow editing…especially for us typo prone sorts)

Question #1, it’s hard to know exactly what the author meant woithout seeing the exact quote. That said, he probably meant that the further back one goes in a pedigree, the less any particular ancestor contributes to the horse’s genetic makeup. In other words, the influence of any ancestor is diluted. A fourth-generation ancestor contributes on average about one-sixteenth (6.25%) of an individual’s DNA. That’s not a lot, especially considering that a portion of it will be inactive. FWIW, most people interested in pedigrees take them back to the 5th generation. Because most TBs are line bred, one will generally find at least a couple of ancestors repeated in the pedigree. These may be assumed to contibute an additional share of genetic material, though maybe not a lot.
Question #2, just say you would like to be able to contribute to the discussions. I don’t think there’s a need to write anything elaborate.

Thank you, Laura!

He is just so well put together, incredible hind quarter, very nice laid back shoulder. He is built to race.

Oh I love these pictures! I love how foals have to bend to get their heads down to the grass, so cute! I love the video, the new prince is so curious just like his mom.

I can’t begin to describe how excited I am to see 13Z turn into a BIG RED HORSE. Way to go Z – you might have topped it with this one.
