We know you’ve all been waiting for more photos!
Team Z and Lane’s End are proud to share these images from the birth of Zenyatta’s second colt. Based on the response we’ve received, it seems that the world is as excited as we are.
We had a spectacular day on the farm, and we are saying our goodbyes for now. Mom and her little one are now relaxing, bonding, and spending some quiet time alone.
There are still more photos from this trip to come. We’ll post again soon with news about 13Z and his older brother!
Enjoy!

It’s like he wanted to lose, changed his mind, rethought that decision, chaned his mind again, ran over to talk to the fans, changed his mind again, and then decided to win.
Max
Whirlaway, the 1941 Triple Crown winner, used to do this too, and he still won. They had to give him special training and blinkers to stop his wild rides. Whirlaway was grand ole chestnut and was known as Mr. Longtail. He was the pride of Calumet Farms. He’s also a favorite of our TC.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Did not know that about Whirlaway. Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Whirly was trained by Ben Jones, who also trained Citation. If I recall correctly, to stop him from drifting around the track during races, Jones fitted Whirly with a special blinker which restricted the horse’s vision on the right side. Jones then positioned himself 10 feet from the inner rail so that the horse could see him with his left eye, but could see nothing on right. Jones told the jockey to ride Whirly through that corridor. It worked with training and Whirly went on to win the Triple Crown. Jones also changed his jockey to Eddie Arcaro.

That was some race. Bolted twice, must have needed to sign some
autographs along the way.
HeidiK Vallejo,Ca (In Awe)
That was so funny!!! He had to check the side of the gate to make sure it was alright and ohhh, wait, I need to go over there. If he would have stayed straight, he would have won by many lengths. Thank goodness the jockey stayed on.
Zenyen
I want to see the amusement in this video but all I can think is thank goodness that jockey was one hell of a rider to stick with that lunatic. :(
While it’s funny to watch, that is a nightmare scenario for all those jockeys and horses on the track. I honestly hope the stewards bar that horse from running until the trainer can work with him and instill some manners because that is dangerous for his jockey, the other horses, the other riders and also completely unfair to the betting public.
Janet Newman
I think gelding may be in his future, if he wasn’t already, he will need a lot of work.
Yes, I can laugh at it now, but he did come very close to crashing into the horse behind him on the second bolt out. I do not think that jockey or any will be wanting on him any time soon.
Zenyen
I think, if he’s lucky, a rest on a farm and then a reintroduction to the track to see if they can get his head in the game.
If they can’t, hopefully a second career, again if he’s lucky.
That is pure barn sourness right there. I’ve dealt with those sorts across various disciplines and they are hard cases indeed.

Dear Vicki B and Z Fans:
Wow! What a wild ride that was. Can you imagine what this horse can do if he learns to stay on path. His sire is Louis Quatorze. Trained by Nick Zito, he won the Preakness Stakes in 1996, so this little Wild Man has the breeding to do well.
Hope he settles down to business. Very scary; thank God no horse or rider was injured. Hugs, JB
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
I didn’t know that Judy — but Preakness blood makes sense, the way he recovered from his two gallivants to nearly win! He’s in a horse race, way ahead, and it was almost like, “Oh look, there’s a butterfly!” and he’s off!
Zenyen
What happened is the backside.
As he came around that turn, he knows that ‘home’ is off to his right and he was bolting right to go back to the barn. Whether this is because he has a ‘best friend’ he wants to get back too or he just didn’t want to be on the track, that is hard to tell but the basic issue is the same; he’s barn sour.
His trainer has his work cut out for him getting his mind back on the concept of wanting to run and be competitive. He may have all the physical talent in the world but if all he wants to do is get back ‘home’ then he shouldn’t be on the track.
andrea
That was a wild ride! Crazy Green, or what!?! He might have won by a length or 2, if he had stayed in a lane! Bet the jock needed a drink after that one!!!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Wow–I have never seen anything like this. Thank God they are ok. Thanks, Vicki.
shirleeinindy
In 50 years of watching racing I have never seen anything like that. Of course, thank goodness all horses and jocks are safe. Can’t help but get a laugh out of this even though I am sure the trainer, owner and jockey are not laughing. If they can get this guy straightened out, talk about a runner.
What happend to Oxbow yesterday?
shirleeinindy
Looked up Spicer Cub. Can you believe the last name of his breeder and owner is Butt? Talk about your jokes. Trainer is a Mary Eppler.
Eveline / Maryland.
@ Zenyen, the stabling is on the other side of the track. Stabling behind the grand stand doesn’t open up until Preakness week. He does train and is stabled on the grounds.

Dear Judy:
Have just heard Andrew Bensley talking on Skysportsradio about yesterday’s racing. Hay List is going to be checked out for a likely respiratory infection – made some dreadful noises in the race according to Glyn (jockey). The other nasty news from yesterday (and I’m surprised that no-one from the Moody camp seems to have made much of this) was the death of a two year old colt, So Man Up, who broke his pelvis in the Produce Stakes – made for very, very unpleasant viewing, and again reminds one just how fragile the line is between glory and going home with pain. Hugs KathyR.

Mizdirection Keeps Winning in Las Cienegas
By Jack Shinar The Blood-Horse Updated: Saturday, April 13, 2013 9:13 PM
Odds-on pick Mizdirection, prepping for bigger things to come, posted her fifth consecutive win on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita Park when she captured the $100,000 Las Cienegas Stakes (gr. IIIT) April 13 (VIDEO).
Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (gr. I) winner over males, Mizdirection defeated her Mike Puype stablemate Schiaparelli by a half-length. Mizdirection, ridden by David Flores subbing for Mike Smith, completed the about 6 1/2-furlong distance in 1:12.61 over firm ground.

Why doesn’t anyone else (besides Helen and I) think it is ODD that we haven’t seen ANY photos since day two (maybe day three) of Zenny and her new colt????? I am in no way trying to “stir the pot” BUT today all we get is an out of focus photo of Z13 obviously taken outside????? Where is Zenny? Why aren’t the Moss’ releasing photos like mad as they did with the birth of Z12??
And yesterday during the broadcast of the Apple Blossom — did anyone else find it odd that there was no mention/photos/WHATEVER of “past Apple Blossom winner Zenyatta” giving birth to her second colt by Tapit?
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Hi Judy in South Carolina — Like anyone else here, I always love seeing more and new photos of Z, 12Z, and now 13Z. While I’m a little surprised we haven’t seen more of 13Z yet, because we did see videos & photos of 12Z quickly, I can’t say that I think it is “odd”, and I am not worried or afraid about it.
I just assume the people involved are busy, and have other things they need to do first. The Twitter post today of 13Z’s muzzle-pic also said, “Check http://Zenyatta.com for an update this weekend!”, so that made me think there would likely be more sometime on Sunday.
shirleeinindy
Judy, I am sure all is well with Zenyatta and baby boy. Let’s face it. In today’s world nothing is kept secret. With all the employees and people at Lanes End, Rood and Riddle and other similar facilites, if all was not well, we would have heard about it.
Pati- Derby Dreaming
Plus, it’s a big farm with a lot of other mares. All the staff is probably “all hands on deck” right now. Besides, we were probably given Z12 pictures by the mass because he was her first, and everyone was expecting a lot. Now that we have seen the gorgeous yearling he has become, they might not feel the need to post pictures and videos of Z13 every three days because we know Z is a good mom and that both her boys are spectacular.
I think it’s nice they posted a picture of Z13’s nose. I guess he wanted a very close “close-up”. It’s a cute nose and he’s outside already, so he’s healthy. If something was wrong, Team Z and Lanes End would have told us by now, and I don’t think Z13 would have been let outside if it something was wrong with him.
Try not to worry. It’s anxious waiting for pictures and videos but we won’t always get them immediately because LE is just busy between mares giving birth and stallions being booked for the next breeding season. Crying foul will only stir up blood and pointlessly panic people. I prefer to look at it as “No News is Good News”.
Peggy (N) South Georgia (PUR)
Pati,
So well said. I think you hit it all right on the nose.
I don’t think anyone needs to worry. I know we think so much about the mare’s and foal this time of year.
We must remember the great Stallions this is Breeding time of year and will be until probably June. I am sure they are really busy.
Kathy R.
Dear Judy in South Carolina and Helen:
Please try not to worry – I understand how keen you are to see new photos and be assured all is well with the magical Zenyatta and her little one – but as Maureen phi-llips would say, trust in the Lord – from w-a-y Downunder that’s what I’m doing you’ll just make yourselves sick with worry otherwise. Good morning all…………..in reference to my posting from yesterday, I appreciate all the replies.
I actually should have been more clear that I found it odd that there has been nothing surfacing from the Moss camp with regard to current photos, etc. of Zenny and Z13. Yes, absolutely, Lanes End is busy with other mares, their stallions and all of the day to day operations of such a huge farm. But the Moss’ (Ann in particular) are like grandparents with a new human baby where Zenny and her offspring are concerned and Ann is a “shutterbug”. I guess what gave me pause was that THEY have not posted anything current.
I am hoping that those of you who replied to my post are correct and there WILL be some “news” today.
P.S. Unfortunately, I am agnostic so “trusting in the Lord” doesn’t work for me. I do, however, respect the fact that it does for others…………………………….

‘Do You Believe in Miracles?’ Maiden Runner Takes Harrowing Route to Nose Defeat
by Natalie Voss The Paulick Report | 04.14.2013 | 9:55am
Maiden claiming contender Spicer Cub took a rather unconventional route to the finish line on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course: after bolting at the 5/16 pole and again at the 3/16 pole, the 4-year-old gelding swung so wide that he veered between the parked starting gate and the outside rail.
“I saw him heading right for the starting gate and it was horrible. Absolutely horrible,” said trainer Mary Eppler. “I just couldn’t believe what he was doing. I have such a horrible headache from watching that happen yesterday.”

CONGRATS to Frac Daddy and all his connections yesterday on his 2nd place finish!
LOVE< LOVE< LOVE this guy! He is from my one of my all time favorites Skip Away, so since Shanghai Bobby is out Frac Daddy is my Derby Pick! Not sure about his jockey, he waged a complaint against Overanaylized that had no basis.
As I understand Mike, Rosie, Gary, and Calvin have no Derby mounts as of today? Here's hoping all 4 get a mount, the Derby wouldn't be the same without these 4 superstars!
OMG! The video of Spicer Cub was wild, what a jockey to stay on and guide his horse home to finish second! (Maybe he should get a Derby mount for traffic purposes alone!) Thankfully all came home safe and sound, if he wasn't wearing blinkers, maybe that would be an option for owner, trainer, jockey, and horse! I can't help thinking this may have been an isolated incident, because I can not imagine a trainer sending a horse on the track with these issues, or a jockey agreeing to ride him? (This is only my opinion!) I have seen this happen at Saratoga, and it is amazing that everyone comes out safe and sound! I think it says alot for all jockey's and horses in the race.
