We know you’ve all been waiting for more photos!
Team Z and Lane’s End are proud to share these images from the birth of Zenyatta’s second colt. Based on the response we’ve received, it seems that the world is as excited as we are.
We had a spectacular day on the farm, and we are saying our goodbyes for now. Mom and her little one are now relaxing, bonding, and spending some quiet time alone.
There are still more photos from this trip to come. We’ll post again soon with news about 13Z and his older brother!
Enjoy!

Derby hero Camelot on course for comeback
Posted by: AAP+ Filled in: International Horse Racing | 10/4/2013 at 11:42am
Aidan O’Brien has mapped out an early-season plan for dual Derby winner Camelot that will culminate in an appearance at Royal Ascot.
Camelot also won the 2000 Guineas in a stellar three-year-old campaign and was just denied the Triple Crown by Encke in the St Leger before being unplaced in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Shortly after his trip to France he developed colic but has made a full recovery and was seen moving well in a public gallop at the Curragh recently.
“I’ve been delighted with him since he came back. He’s shown all the speed and the class that he always had,” O’Brien told At The Races.
“I’m really looking forward to him.
“I think he’ll come back to the Curragh for the Mooresbridge (May 6), if everything then goes well hopefully he’ll go to the Tattersalls (Gold Cup) and then he might go to the Prince of Wales’s.
“If everything goes well that is what we are thinking for the early part of the season.”
O’Brien also had news of his two Dubai winners, St Nicholas Abbey and Lines Of Battle.
“Races like the Coronation Cup and the King George are likely for St Nick. We experimented a bit last year with different ways of riding him and different trips but Joseph and Derrick (Smith) were adamant he wants to be ridden handy this year and that’s what they did,” said O’Brien.
“The plan for Lines Of Battle is the Kentucky Derby.”

Remarkable stuff. Luke Nolen has drawn barrier 1 in five of his seven rides

Peter Moody comment on barrier draw:
http://www.skyracing.com.au/index.php?component=news&task=rnewsdetails&Itemid=108&id=23&rid=18417
Dear Keta:
Inside draws seem to have a mixed reaction depending on the state of the track – if it’s very heavy inside is often cut up more than the outside, so I guess that’s what Peter is concerned about. But it seems that when Nelly races it’s more about the hesitation of the rest of the field to know just what they should do – push forward and let her chase, or gang up on her (which some of the Sydney commentators are suggesting – along the lines of what happened with More Joyous on the weekend). I think the worry, as Peter has said is the state of the track, and the lateness in the day for the race, meaning it could be cut up more. Hugs KathyR.

Black Caviar set to renew clash with old foe Hay List in Saturday’s Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes
Racing Victoria Wednesday | 10 April 2013
One of Australian racing’s greatest rivalries will be renewed at Randwick on Saturday when undefeated Victorian mare Black Caviar takes on arch-nemesis Hay List in the Group 1 Darley T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m).
The pair haven’t met since last year’s Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington, one of five times the John McNair-trained sprinter has tasted defeat at the hands of the Black Caviar.
Saturday’s $1 million race, where Black Caviar has drawn the inside barrier and Hay List gate nine, has attracted a star-studded line-up of sprinters including last-start The Galaxy (1100m) winner Bel Sprinter (barrier 2), spring star Sea Siren (10) and Darley’s Golden Rose victor Epaulette (8).
It will also be the first time since Black Caviar’s famous 2011 T.J. Smith victory over Hay List that she has faced more than nine rivals, with local speedsters Rain Affair (5), Decision Time (4) and Howmuchdoyouloveme (7) also featuring in the 11 horse field.

Glad that all of you liked the video. MM has done very well in so short a time. He’s made a lot of money for his horse charity. I like the comment that he only paints for an hour, a few days a week, to avoid burnout. Ha! The rest of the time, he’s horsing around. These horses are so smart.

I have a question, Been meaning to ask this before.
To our resident experts,
In the Sales Catalogs, What do they mean when the say “Black Type Winner”
Janet Newman
Peggy (N)
I understand that a black type winner is a horse who has won or placed in a stakes race.
That is what I have been told. I know there are many who know the terms better than I do. Hope someone else can shed more light on this for you.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
That is correct. If the horse won a stakes race, his/her name appears in bold, all uppercase letters. If the horse placed second or third, the name appears in bold upper and lower case letters. As of now, the horse receives black type regardless of the level or restrictions on the stakes race. This is not a problem though, since the information is contained elsewhere on the page.
Here is Zenyatta’s catalog page from the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale:
http://apps.keeneland.com/sales/sep05/pdfs/703.pdf
You see that her sire Street Cry is a multiple grades stakes winner. Her first dam (mother) Vertigineux was not a stakes winner, so her name appears in regular weight text. Her second dam (maternal grandmother) For The Flag does not have black type either, but the page shows that she is the dam of three stakes winners–Restrained, Blash, and National Service, and a stakes placed horse, On the Staff. Restrained is the dam of a black-type winner, who is in turnthe dam of a black-type winner.
Catalog pages change, of course. At the time this was printed, Zenyatta’s sister Where’s Bailey had not earned black type, but she did prior to the sale. Contrast Zenyatta’s page with a more recent page–this from the 2011 sale of Zenyatta’s weanling sister:
http://apps.keeneland.com/sales/Nov11/pdfs/36.pdf
Lots more black type under Vertigineux.
One wil hear “black type” used as a short hand for quality breeding, as in “The dam was unraced, but she has a lot of black type up close.”

Ditto here, good morning, One question I have though is who picks out the colors for him? The splashes of color’s are amazing and the designs different each time. Am sure he brings in more money than his parents, doubt it though.
Sunday Silence signed an autograph for me once and he did it by putting his huff in ink and then stamping the paper, his parents then signed his name and dated it. I think they should have other horses sign their own pictures for visitors and make some money that way. Just saying, Horses like Mine That Bird who is also a gelding.
Have a wonderfully Blessed day. It is well.

The rescue organization ReRun has a fundraising program in which they sell horse paintings. They are called “Moneighs.” They’re painted by famous race horses and sport horses and auctioned off on Ebay. Each Moneigh is done in colors associated with the horse and includes a hoof print and a lock of hair.
Here is an article that includes a picture of a Moneigh by Zenyatta.

Dear Rosemary McCauley, Happy birthday! Here’s an encore performance of your poem from last year.
A Birthday Poem for Rosemary McCauley
(April 10, 2012)
Our dear Rosemary is one
Who grew up having fun
And getting her kicks
Riding horseback.
Such indeed was her knack
That you ringside
Could sit
At shows
And rodeos
And watch her trick ride
When she was just SIX!
As onward years sped,
She met a trainer of Thoroughbreds.
One thing to another led,
And soon they had wed.
As a young bride,
Rosemary before dawn would arise
And their horses ride
Counterclockwise
Round the track
For morning exercise,
And afternoons she to the farm went back
For a related enterprise—
Namely the yearlings to “break”
And train potentially for graded stakes.
Their time the couple did divide
Between So Cal tracks and Turf Paradise.
Rosemary did ride
So well
And at horsemanship so excel
That Hall of Fame trainer Charlie Whittingham
Her the compliment did pay
To say
What a GREAT horsewoman
Was she, our Rosemary!
But her resumé’s not yet complete:
This elite
Athlete
Did also compete
In hunter/jumper and dressage—
What a great feat!
As for humor, we know
That she—like our dear Terry Crow—
Is fond of redneck jokes
Many of which she’s cared to share
With her own “redneck” folks.
She also us did tell
How recently
She rode Z
On the LA Zoo carousel!
Now she’s strictly a So Cal gal,
And if you should chance to be
In this locale
And a lady see
In a truck with plates that “Znyataa” read,
Take heed—
It could be your opportunity
Our dear Rosemary
To greet!
Happy birthday, Rosemary, and many, many more!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Happy Birthday, Rosemary! Also, kudos on your horseman (woman) ship! What a wonderful background. I’ve ridden the carousel too, but that’s the extent of my riding–lol!

A Birthday Poem for Virginia in So Cal
(April 10, 2013)
Virginia, I know
You with great skill
Do knit
Fine afghan throws
Designed to fit
The bill
For the discriminating buyer
Who does desire
Warmth and cozy cheer
To fight the winter chill.
And for nearly twenty years
You’ve been as well
A dedicated teacher of ESL
At three universities
In the Inland Empire
(That’s the Riverside/San Bernardino vicinity).
Wherever you’ve taught,
You’ve always sought
Your students to serve
With vigor, vim and verve.
You’re a baseball fan too,
And it’s true
That your birthday’s for you
All the cheerier
Because you it share
With that Dodger cutie patootie–
Their
Andre Ethier!
So cheers and some beers
For you, and him too!
Happy birthday, Virginia, and many, many more!

Dear Especially Horses:
I’ve already inquired about bus trips to Belmont (not able to make the drive myself) and so far cannot find anything local. I did find a trip to Saratoga on August 11th that I would like to ask all of you that are close by whether you can make that date. It’s on a Sunday and the bus leaves 6:30 AM locally from Warwick, which is about a 30 minute ride for me. I was hoping that since Eblouissante is definitely going to NY with John, she may be among the horses he takes to Saratoga and we might be able to visit her there. Lot of if, I know, in this plan.
I still haven’t given up on getting to Belmont. Thought maybe if I take the Greyhound into NYC, I could then find a bus that goes directly to Belmont Park. I will have to do some research. Hugs, JB

Dear Laura J.:
Than you. I did some research yesterday into the Belmont trains from the LLRR. There are two that leave from Penn Station. My train from RI would get to Penn at 10:50 AM just as the first Belmont train is leaving. That would mean an hour overlay until the second train leaves at 11:50 AM.
Unfortunately, on the return trip, there is only one train back to RI at 7:00 PM. The Belmont train leaves the track after the last race between 6:30 PM and 6:45 PM, which just wouldn’t coordinate.
Think I’m better off going by bus to Saratoga. Would be easier for me all around. Hugs, JB

Paulick Report News Alert
What is causing a significant increase in sudden deaths among horses at California racetracks, and why were traces of rodenticide, or rat poison, found in post-mortem toxicology tests of two of the deceased horses?
The California Horse Racing Board’s Medication and Track Safety Committee discussed those issues at a meeting in Arcadia, Calif., Wednesday. Horsemen throughout the region have been talking about it, too, specifically about the rash of sudden deaths of horses from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.

I hope it’s just bad feed. You can throw the bad food away, but it’s harder to find the fanatics who don’t realize what they are doing over their blind ambition to ruin someone. It’s sad they chose to do it through a horse. I hope they find the someone or something responsible for this soon. I read on Ray’s blog that rat poisoning was found when autopsies were performed on two of the horses. I really hope it isn’t sabotage, or worse, chemical warfare on the barn of Mr. Baffert.

The little mini, Delilah, finally had her baby; a little boy. He’s cute as can be. Will visit the farm on Sunday and take some photos. Hugs, JB

JudyB. Wonderful news. Does Angela have a Facebook page where photo could be posted? Let us know how the new mom is doing after your visit. Looking forward to hearing about the college girl, PC and the others.

Dear Max and Z Fans:
Facebook for Angela is: Angela Caparco Baxter. If you can’t access, my e-mail is rberube59@cox.net. If you would like, I will forward you the photo that I have of Delilah and her little son, Captain.
Max, will have an update on everyone after my visit on Sunday.
On a sad note, our Skip, Barbara Grimaldi is going through a very tough time right now. A horse that she rescued and has been financially caring for over the past few months badly injured his leg on Wednesday during the van ride from Florida to his forever home in Louisiana. He is in the LSU veterinary hospital recovering from surgery. Have not had an update yet. BG is flying out there tomorrow.
Our Barbara Wood has already left a post asking for your prayers for Jericho, BG and KW (who picked him up in Florida and was traveling back with him to Louisiana). Please pray for all of them and for Jericho’s recovery. Thank you. Love and Hugs, JB
