We know you’ve all been waiting for more photos!
Team Z and Lane’s End are proud to share these images from the birth of Zenyatta’s second colt. Based on the response we’ve received, it seems that the world is as excited as we are.
We had a spectacular day on the farm, and we are saying our goodbyes for now. Mom and her little one are now relaxing, bonding, and spending some quiet time alone.
There are still more photos from this trip to come. We’ll post again soon with news about 13Z and his older brother!
Enjoy!

This article is from Skysportsradio. Still waiting to hear Andrew Bensley’s report – maybe he tossed in some cash and is in shock as a part-owner?? Maybe he’s involved our Keta is this little venture???

Andrew Bensley has just reported in. Confirmed the purchase and price. BC3thoroughbreds has already purchased Belle Couture. Bensley has talked with BC3’s principal, Bill Vhalos (think that’s how he spells his name) – no trainer lined up for the colt yet. RIck Jamieson (the breeder) is totally amazed at the price.

Black Caviar’s brother fetches $5 million
Posted by: AAP+ Filled in: Australian Horse Racing | 9/4/2013 at 5:48pm
It began with an opening bid of $2 million and ended three minutes later with a successful offer of $5 million and the announcement that history had been made.
But the most expensive thoroughbred yearling ever sold in Australia almost didn’t make it into the ring.
The colt, a half brother to the world champion sprinter Black Caviar, by the champion stallion Redoute’s Choice, threw a substantial tantrum on sale eve that could have resulted in a serious injury and led to a decoy horse being placed in his box.
A member of the team from Three Bridges Farm who prepared the colt for the sale said he became agitated after constantly being removed from his box to be inspected.
“He just cracked it, he got jack of being taken in and out of his box and lost it,” said the Three Bridges representative.
“If it hadn’t been for the skill of his handlers it could have been a disastrous.”
In a bid to avoid the inevitable attention on sale day, inspections were banned and the colt was shifted to a nearby box and a substitute yearling stood in his place, attracting the appreciation of the hundreds of unwitting admirers.

Ryan Mania ‘frustrated’ at having to miss Kelso ride as he awaits scan
• No return date for Grand National winner after Hexham fall
• ‘He’s a wee bit sore and fed up,’ says Mania’s mother, Lesley
Chris Cook The Guardian, Monday 8 April 2013 15.57 EDT
Ryan Mania, the jockey who pulled off a 66-1 shock in Saturday’s Grand National, was forced to live his life at a somewhat steadier pace on Monday, which he spent waiting for an MRI scan to assess the extent of an injury he picked up at Hexham on Sunday. The 23-year-old is not thought to have been badly damaged in the fall on Stagecoach Jasper, the only horse he has ridden since his Aintree success on Auroras Encore, but he was kicked by other horses following behind and a date for his return to the saddle remains unclear.
“He’s frustrated,” reported Bruce Jeffrey, his agent, on Monday night. “He’s up and walking about but he’s basically in the same position as when I left him on Sunday night; he was waiting for a scan then, too. He was wanting to ride at Kelso [on Monday]. I had to tell him, ‘No, you’ll not be riding at Kelso.’ He’s some man. They’re all the same, these jockeys. I wish I was half as tough.”

Some important news also in the Guardian article
However, he had some good news about Jonjo Bright, the 19-year-old rider injured in a point-to-point fall at around the same time, when he fractured his C3 and C4 vertebrae, as McNamara did.
The former trainer Mick Quinlan was found dead at his home on Sunday night at the age of 61. He held a licence for 12 years to 2011 and had winners at both the Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot before handing on the operation to his brother Noel, who said: “He had his ups and downs for a few years now but it’s important we remember the great highs he had.”

Anthony Cummings just told me, the ankle has not recovered and he’s not satisfied
in running Fiveandahalfstar in the Derby. Requires 3mths.
Anthony Cummings saying if Fiveandahalfstar is back for the Spring that’s great
but they’ll do the right thing by the 3YO for long future.
Officially, Fiveandahalfstar sustained a sprain to inside off fore fetlock. In general terms for all.. something like twisted ankle.

Such great photos! All look happy. If 13Z changes to more reflect the coloring of his sire, how quickly does that happen? And when will 12Z finally get a name?
zenyen
The Mosses traditionally name their horses when they are 2 year olds in training. It gives the Mosses a chance to get to know their personalities and give them a proper name. I would guess that 12Z will get his official name no sooner than late 2013 early 2014.
13Z is going to be a beautiful red gold chestnut, not gray like his father.
Ingrid Arnone
Really, Z13 is going to be chestnut, not grey or white like his dad? Well maybe his going to win the Triple Crown like Secretariat that will be great, ha ha.
Hug Ingrid.
Celeste
I am intrigued by Zenyen!! You always have such factual comments. I look forward to reading your posts. Do you work at Lane’s End? I do not mean to be nosy by asking; i am just curious!
zenyen
Celeste,
Oh goodness that is flattering! I could only wish I worked at Lane’s End but I do not.
Growing up I had the honor and pleasure of working with a champion trainer from Canada who came to the US and ran a string of ‘blue collar’ runners up and down the East Coast. He also maintained a small broodmare band and stood a nice, well bred stallion.
I kept my horse at his barn and over two decades worked every aspect of his business from the nursery to breaking in the yearlings to going to the track and working the backside and back again. It was a wonderful way to grow up until marriage took me out of state.
Celeste
Wow, you have had some great experiences. No wonder you are so knowledgeable!!
I have always loved horses and rode for a few years. My daughter had a horse for 6 years and when she outgrew her, I took over. She was an old mare, but perfect for me.
I have been to the Kentucky Derby twice and loved every minute of it. The Derby horses really stand out over the other horses that are racing in the other races. They have such charisma; they are amazing up close.
I would have loved to have seen Zenyatta in person, but I never went out to California. I saw Rachel Alexandra win the Kentucky Oaks by about 20 lengths. She was amazing too.
It would have been very interesting to see them race each other, but it never happened. I’m so happy Rachel is recovering from her foaling complications. Her foal is doing well, but it’s sad they are not together.
Well, it’s nice to “meet” you! Maybe there will be an opportunity for all of us Zenyatta fans to meet her someday. Wouldn’t that be wonderful!!!!

National winner Mania leaves hospital
Posted by: AAP+ Filled in: Australian Horse Racing | 10/4/2013 at 2:00am
Grand National winner Ryan Mania has left hospital after an MRI scan revealed he sustained only minor injuries in a fall the day after his Aintree triumph.
The 23-year-old was taken to hospital after tumbling from his mount on his return to action in Hexham, northeast England on Sunday, a day after his National victory on 66-1 outsider Auroras Encore.
The Scot was kicked between the shoulder blades after his fall and spent two nights in hospital but a scan of his neck and back showed no serious damage.

In the last picture, where Z is sniffing the little one’s right hind leg, that bulge on the left side of Z’s neck…is that really Z’s neck? I know it’s a dumb question, but that bulge is huge. Thanks.

It is Z’s neck.
It’s not a bulge, just the way the muscles flex when she has her head arched around like that.

That’s a lotta muscle! What a horse!

No new pictures? I wish they would hire someone for this site. I feel like we have lost Zenyatta, and will only get a glimpse now and again.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
You’re kidding, right?
We get unprecedented access and information about Zenyatta. The Mosses are already paying for a website and a team to maintain it. Now you want them to hire a photographer too? And how often do you want Lane’s End to give said photographer access to Zenyatta–daily? Hourly? Will this be a full time gig, or just part time? They’d better learn to stay out of the way of LE employees doing their jobs.
Please be grateful for what we have. Alys, Kyle, and the other LE employees are generous with their time and photographic talents. I am sure we will get updates on 13Z as he grows, as well as on 12Z. But really, things don’t change much on a day-to-day basis for Zenyatta. She has a routine that has already been documented. How many pictures do you need of Zenyatta grazing in contentment? We certainly don’t need a new one every day.
zenyen
A hearty seconding to everything Laura J has said and add that Zenyatta and 13Z are living breathing animals, not props to be put on display for our amusement.
This is a very special time for Zenyatta to relax and enjoy her new foal, not to have cameras following her every move. There are plenty of people to document with photographs, Alys, Kyle to name a few but they are being RESPECTFUL and giving Zenyatta time and space to just be a mother.
We will get pictures, the Mosses give Zenyatta’s fans access paralleled only by the equally gracious Stonestreet. Let us be grateful for their time and effort and respectful of Zenyatta’s right to her routine and her little one.
Kathy R.
Dear Laura and Zenyen:
Agree with everything you have both said. I don’t think some folk really appreciate just how lucky they (and we) are to have this site, and the generosity and kindness of Mr and Mrs Moss is just extraordinary. Not to mention how giving are the folk at Lane’s End. So as our friend Maureen would say, let us give thanks and blessings for what we have. And I’m also very, very grateful that as an alien I can get access to such a great community.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark

Kathy R,
When I was an “alien” in Australia, I was treated with such kindness! Australians are marvelous people and I felt so at home for those two weeks that I was there. Only positive feelings from my end of the world. :-)
This site is our life line into Z’s world post racing, and I cherish it with all my being. We don’t have such access for many other super mares like Rags to Riches, Blind Luck, Havre de Grace, and not even for most stallions. How many horses can say they have a monthly (sometimes more frequently) post about them that is read by hundreds upon hundreds of people? We are very lucky Lanes End and Stonestreet allow us such access to the mares we so dearly love. I am willing to wait for more pictures/videos/posts if it means that we continue to get anything at all. Sometimes, waiting just stinks.

A Poem for Judy Berube on the First Anniversary of her Bereavement
(April 9, 2013)
Dearest Judy, I’ve heard
When two love-birds
Have been by death
Sadly parted
And one’s left behind, broken-hearted,
To face
Years to come
WIthout the departed one,
The first year,
Through which you have just passed,
Is judged to be the worst.
Blessedly Russ does still
Sweet messages to you send.
Though you him sorely miss,
His love, which forever will last,
Does you daily surround.
’Tis perhaps by virtue of all this
That you strength
Have found
From the deepest depths
Of sadness to rebound.
You manage each day
With purpose to fill,
Even with cheer.
May it always
Thus for you stay,
Till
At length
One day
You’ll again
Your beloved Russ see
And with him reunited be.
To this we say
Amen.

Dear Sheena,
Thank you for the lovely post. I can actually remember Sir Winston — he was a great hero of my grandfather’s. I can still hear him (Granddaddy) quoting Mr. Churchill from time to time. I am sorry that people behave so poorly — yes, it is sick to celebrate the passing of Mrs. Thatcher, a strong sensible leader who did much to make Britain solid again. It seems that rudeness is the rule nowadays, more’s the pity.
Hope your weather has moderated some. It was 83 degrees (F) today and will be 85+ tomorrow — way too hot for early April. Summer is fast approaching, as usual.
Reilly and Huey are doing well. Thank you for remembering them!

Hi Everyone ! LOVE that new photo from Alys!!! It is just amazing how his demeanor has changed in just a few days. It seems he is already used to the camera and he looks so secure and sure of himself. It is as though he already is aware that he IS a Prince!
@ Barnaby’s Auntie Trina–The poems for Judy,in tribute to Russ, and the one for Z13 are just incredible!! Some of your best ever!!
@ Sandy and Brenda–Have a ball for the next few days, you two!! Wish I could be there too–I had so much fun with you both at the BC!!
Just discovered Hovis from looking at the links provided here—what a hoot!! I got on the Horse and Hound shopping page and ordered the first two books. Will email them tonight when I go home to make sure it worked OK,as I don’t know about shipping to the US. I just love his cheeky humor!!
Have been experimenting with different bits on Mr. Barnaby–even rode him in a hackamore the last two weeks. He is getting his teeth floated and his spring shots next Tuesday and I think his teeth may be part of the problem. I had them done right after I got him and a few months later a different vet said they needed to be done–after the first vet said they should be good for two years after he did them. I won’t be able to be there,as I will be at work, but,His Auntie Sue will comfort him,as will our friend,Heather, who just adores him and often rides him. He will get plenty of attention.
I have ordered a new bit for him, recommended by our great farrier,Tom Riney. It is called a dog-bone snaffle and is all rubber, except for the metal D-Rings on the sides, like the ones on racing bridles. He says his wife, who is a judge and trainer rides in one of those all the time and that Barnaby should love it. It will be great if he does,I so want him to have the perfect one that makes him happy!
I had so much fun with him last week–he waqs being so good in the cross ties,I experimented with him, ground tying him, just by dropping his reins when I brought him back after riding in the arena. He stood like he was rooted in cement!! Then,I took all of his tack off, just letting him stand there with nothing on him at all—and he still stood still as a statue!! He is SO good h his ground manners,it is just amazing!! We only have a couple or three weeks left at the Susie Q. They will move up to their five acres in East Fork the first of May–earlt this year,as it has been so dry. They will be so happy to get out of the trailer and see where they are! It’s going to be sad, leaving Rancher Tom,knowing that we will be in a different stable next winter. The place where we will be is lovely, though. And,it is 15 miles closer to home, which will be nice.
My best friend,Nicki, was up for a visit this past weekend and Sue was telling everyone ,while we were all having lunch at the Sun Valley Lodge, what a good influence that arnaby has been on Traveller–she feels that he has helped her calm down and that he has set a good example for her on how to act around the barn. Of course,I was thrilled to hear her say that—just like a proud “mama”! I do so love that boy!! I keep telling him that he is the best horse in the world (with apologies to Queen Z!) and I think he is beginning to believe it!! I just love his self-confidence–he carries himself as though he knows he is very special!!
So sorry to lose the great Margaret Thatcher,as well as sweet Annette! I especially admired Prime Minister Thatcher–being the devout Anglophile that I am!! Am planning to get up in the middle of the night and watch her funeral on CNN.
Loved watching the Grand National–what a story this year–I felt it WAS very reminiscent of “Natioal Velvet”–am so glad the darling jockey is going to be OK,after his subsequent fall!!
Blessings to our Queen, and both precious Princes. And,my eternal thanks to all who do so much to keep them close to us!!! Hope all have a peaceful night.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Sue–we needed another Barnaby installment, and you came through.
From my limited horse experience, I think they appreciate the trust humans give them by respecting them enough to ground tie them. We have never had a problem.
With our guy, it’s almost as if he’s saying, “Of course I can stand here and behave!” LOL. All the best to you and your “crew”.
