We know you’ve all been waiting for more photos!
Team Z and Lane’s End are proud to share these images from the birth of Zenyatta’s second colt. Based on the response we’ve received, it seems that the world is as excited as we are.
We had a spectacular day on the farm, and we are saying our goodbyes for now. Mom and her little one are now relaxing, bonding, and spending some quiet time alone.
There are still more photos from this trip to come. We’ll post again soon with news about 13Z and his older brother!
Enjoy!

Hi Judy B, from Rhodes,
Hope the night was restful. Just saw the reply of the Wood Mermorial and I must say I was really impressed by Normandy Invasion! what a stretch he has. Who is Verrazano’s parents?, Nice run.
Have a Blessed day. It is well.

Yes, Normandy Invasion finished really well. Verrazano is by More Than Ready out of Enchanted Rock by Giant’s Causeway. Nice breeding. Blessed Day to you too.

Johnny V rode Orb last weekend to a win. He is going to have to make some big decisions soon.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Shirlee:
Yes, how fate can intervene in racing sometimes. This year, right now, JV has two very good horses and you are so right, he will have a hard decision to make.
In the year 2011, when Uncle Mo, favored to win the Derby, was scratched due to a liver ailment, JV lost his mount and then the day before the Derby picked up the ride on Animal Kingdom and they went on to win the 2011 Kentucky Derby.
As TC would say, even when you know, you never know. Hugs, JB
shirleeinindy
So true. I think Johnny was the rider on Oxbow too. Of course, as so many times happens after the Derby we are all saying “Who was that horse?”
Max
Shirlee. I am not really certain if Johnny V has been aboard Oxbow. His riders may have only been Jon Court and Mike Smith. Gary Stevens is supposed to ride next with Oxbow because Mike is busy elsewhere. Love Oxbow. He’s closely related to Paynter and also to Tiznow through T’s sister, Tizamazing. Tiznow’s other full sister, Tizso, is Paynter’s mother.

Dear Shirley and Max:
Johnny V. never rode Oxbow. Jon Court rode him in three of his races and Mikey rode him for the first time in the Rebel Stakes. He’s started 8 times. Hugs, JB
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Judy B; Talking about jocky’s I can not remember anymore. Our Mikey was not the first one on Z’s back in a race was he? (In Z’s first beginnings) It seems to me that Mike Smith was chosen a short time later. Am I wrong?
hugs, Sally B
shirleeinindy
You guys are correct about Johnny V and Oxbow. Don’t know how fast he can run but appears to really have the pedigree for the distance.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Shirlee:
I can’t remember the jockeys all the time either. You are right. Jockey David Flores rode Zenyatta for her first three races and then Mikey took over and the rest is history. What a glorious history! Hugs, JB
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sally B.:
I addressed your post about Mikey not being Z’s first rider mistakenly to Shirlee. I’m having a rough day today. Sorry. Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia (PUR)
The Wood Memorial was a good race today. I was pulling for VyJack. He has the prettiest face to me. Don’t know if the mile and l/8 was a little too much for him or it was just an off day. I do wish him so much good luck in his career.
Can’t take anything away from Varrazano and Normandy Invasion. They did great.
I think maybe VyJack still has enough points to get into the Kentucky Derby.
Pati- Derby Dreaming
The owners reported he bled a 2 of 5 during the race. It might explain why he was missing his punch at the end. He has enough points since the SA Derby ran to form, unless something crazy happens in Arkansas.
Pati- Derby Dreaming
Just noticed the news on HRTV that the owner recanted his statement re: VyJack bleeding. It was just mucous. I don’t know how he mixed those two up, blood and mucous look different in every living being (at least I think so).
Maybe he was just tired and had an off-day. He looked ferocious in the walk over, so maybe he had some traffic issues somewhere and just got tired.
Peggy (N) South Georgia (PUR)
Hey Pati, I hope maybe he did just have an off day. I like him alot
I got so tickled at them talking about him before he was gelded. They said when they started first training him he was throwing everybody off. They said they had to geld him.
He’s so young I think he will get better. Yes at a mile he is awesome.
maureen phi-llips
Hi Peggy of South Georgia,
Hope your night was restful. and that today will be the best yet. I agree with what you said about Vyjack, I think the mile and 1\8 was a little to much for him bcos you saw him tiring out at the end. Good race though , I think he will do well. He should run that distance a few more times before they change the distance for him. At a mile, he will be amazing.
Have a great day.
Peggy (N) South Georgia (PUR)
Hey Maureen, Yes I think he will do well too. Watch out Kentucky Derby
Such a nice young boy. I don’t think we can count this one out.

MORE JOYOUS AND MORE STRAWBERRIES TO GO TO FRANKEL:
Andrew Bensley has talked with John Singleton: Singo confirmed that More Strawberries is locked in for a date with Frankel. More Joyous is not up for immediate retirement, but all depends on how she goes in the All Aged this weekend. If she fails, retirement may be brought forward, and she also will go to Frankel.

More Bensley news:
. Ocean Park has been retired – will return to New Zealand around June and the search is on for a stud property.

Verrazano Remains Unbeaten with Hard-Fought Victory in Wood Memorial
By Jenny Kellner NYRA | 04/06/2013 08:39 PM ET
VIDEO RACE REPLAY
Verrazano added a hard-fought victory in the Grade 1, $1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack to extend his perfect record to 4-for-4 on Saturday, turning back previously undefeated Vyjack and then holding off a rousing late run from Normandy Invasion to win by three-quarters of a length.
Sent off as the 4-5 favorite in the field of ten 3-year-olds, Verrazano ran second through the early going as longshot Chrisandthecapper set moderate fractions of 24.89 and 49.62 seconds before giving way on the far turn. With Vyjack mounting his challenge on the outside from fifth, Verrazano rounded the turn with a narrow lead that he clung to through the stretch, digging in through the final yards to hit the wire just ahead of the fast-closing Normandy Invasion.
The winning time for 1 1/8 miles was 1:50.27.

Santa Anita Derby: Goldencents sends O’Neill, Pitino to Kentucky Derby
By Jay Privman Daily Racing Form Updated on 04/06/2013 9:04PM
RACE REPLAY VIDEO
ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Doug O’Neill enjoyed winning the Santa Anita Derby last year so much he decided to do it again. Guess he said, I’ll Have Another.
Goldencents, now starting on the path O’Neill trod last year with I’ll Have Another, ran his way into the May 4 Kentucky Derby with a 1 1/4-length victory over favored Flashback on Saturday in the Grade 1, $750,750 Santa Anita Derby before an ontrack crowd of 33,005.
Goldencents is owned by a partnership that includes Rick Pitino, the head coach of the University of Louisville basketball team, which won its Final Four semifinal game on Saturday, 72-68, against Wichita State. As with I’ll Have Another – who was owned by Paul Reddam – Goldencents was purchased at auction by O’Neill’s brother, Dennis. He cost $62,000 as a 2-year-old. He has now earned $1,250,000.

Black Caviar story: “Toey champ nails owner” (from the Sunday Herald Sun):
“Hoof injuries have put two of Black Caviar’s rivals in doubt for a big race next weekend – now the mighty mare’s part-owner is hobbling too. Racing’s pin-up girl stood on Jill Taylor’s foot during a photo shoot for News Limited ahead of this week’s $1 million TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick. The champion sprinter took off Ms Taylor’s toenail and dented her designer shoe barely six shots into the photo session at Peter Moody’s racing stables in Caulfield yesterday. Ms Taylor bravely ignored the pain, admitting her main concen was that the injury might leave her too lame to wear heels at Saturdays big outing to watch her world-beater. Photographer Alex Coppel said Black Caviar’s foot stomp was an unfortunate accident. “Ms Taylor’s toenail came straight off” he said. “There was a fair bit of blood. I got my first-aid kit and patched her up and we kept going”.

Dear Kathy R.:
That sounds very painful. Lucky she has no broken bones. Hugs, JB

Kathy R. Ouch! This proves that there can be only one star in any photo shoot, and she is Black Caviar. Has Nelly been channelling Big D?

2013 Kentucky Derby Contender: Goldencents Bounces Back in Santa Anita Derby
Marc Doche· Published on Apr 6, 2013
If it wasn’t the performance on the track that upstaged last year’s magic, another Team Doug O’Neill post-race celebration that spilled out of the winner’s circle following Goldencents’ victory in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (Grade 1) surely did.
Disrespected as the 6-to-1 fifth choice after tiring to finish fourth in the San Felipe Stakes (G2), Goldencents was able to relax and track pace-setter Super Ninety Nine under unheralded jockey Kevin Krigger before bursting away when they straightened for home and holding off even-money favorite Flashback by 1 ¼-lengths.

Dear Zenyatta and Friends,
How I love looking at these pictures of you and your little one, Zenny!! This week has been a difficult one and it warms my heart to read all the wonderful posts and see you and your colt together. We lost my dear Uncle Mac this week to pancreatic cancer, the funeral was yesterday. He was married to my mother’s sister, so it has been quite had on mom. We will both miss him very much. He has been a part of my life forever. He was born and raised in Kentucky and moved to Colorado when he and my aunt got out of the army. He had the most wonderful soft southern accent. He could tell the best stories ever. When I would talk about my trips to Lexington, he would tell me what the farms used to be like when he was a little boy and how as a teenager he used to work in the tobacco barns. He was very special. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you dear friends. Hugs, Dawn

Happy Sunday, Zenyatta and Family! :-) Rod and I accidentally saw that “40 horse race” yesterday morning at Clockers’ Corner! A guy and gal at table below us had their computer tuned into it and when they saw us looking over, he positioned the computer so we could see race. Wow! Took us a minute to adjust to all those leaps, then I told Rod I have seen movies shorter than this race. After it was over with that 66-1 horse the winner, we heard that all of the horses and jockeys were okay. Our new friend said he was from Canada and had bet on the race the day before, but did not have the winner.
It was a great day at the Great Race Place. So happy for Goldencents and Kevin Krigger (who was on two radio shows this a.m. within one hour, being interviewed–and that’s the ones I heard. He said he was flying up to Golden Gate for this afternoon’s racing.)
Also congrats to Doug and connections, like that small city in the Winners’ Circle. If all goes well and everyone stays healthy (crossed hooves) it will be very entertaining with both Doug and Baffert in KY. Both are so quick on their feet. Bill Dwyre has a good column in today’s L.A. Times for those of you who do links.
Good to see some Dumplings yesterday! Also nice to see the Clydesdales–not that I’m comparing or anything, but I love those horses!! And John’s win with Battle Force, yay!! So much going on.
Enjoy your time as a new (for the second time) mother, Zenyatta!
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
I love the Clydesdales too. I was lucky enough to have the Budweiser team with hitch come to our Washington County Fair grounds a couple years ago. The next day I went when they were cleaning them, getting ready for their departure. This groom let us be with this big one as he was treating the hooves. (I know they are all big beautiful creatures) He was gentle and I could kiss him and pat him. That is a fun memory. Sally B

Will keep you in my prayers. So hope you will be OK. So hard waiting for news.
Hope so hard your mount was ok too. I did hear he got all the way up.
Praying for you all.

Dear Ingrid:
I like Verrazano too. He’s a gorgeous colt. Trina posted on Page 17 that x-rays of JV’s shoulder are negative. Very good news. Hugs, JB
