We know you’ve all been waiting for more photos!
Team Z and Lane’s End are proud to share these images from the birth of Zenyatta’s second colt. Based on the response we’ve received, it seems that the world is as excited as we are.
We had a spectacular day on the farm, and we are saying our goodbyes for now. Mom and her little one are now relaxing, bonding, and spending some quiet time alone.
There are still more photos from this trip to come. We’ll post again soon with news about 13Z and his older brother!
Enjoy!

So good to hear that the geldings and infertile stallions are being taken care of and appreciated. Funny Cide looks beautiful.

Hi Barb: Mine that B is only going to be at the Kentucky Derby Museum until July 4th. I went to the Kentucky Derby the year that Mine that Bird won. So I am going to Ky in June to see him. Can’t wait to see him.

Dear Barb,
Thanks for the update on this loveable gelding……he was great and I’m happy to see that he has a great life.
By the way, my procedure went well and it was like everyone told me. “the worst part is drinking that stuff” and of course the effects. You’ll do just fine, I’m sure, and hope you get good results too.

Auroras Encore at 66-1 wins the Grand National at Aintree. He’s an old warrior at 11 and is trained by a woman.
Another woman, Dottie Love, trained the mare, Liberty Counsel, who beat the boys to take the Irish Grand National earlier this week on Z’s and 13Z’s birthday.

Hi Max,
Thanks for this wonderful post, I enjoyed the read, from the woman trainer Dottie and her mare, Liberty Counsel to the 66-1 Auroras Encore and his faithful jockey who remained faithful to him even though he came 2nd in the Scottish National last year, it brings to mind Mine that Bird and his jockey who abandoned him for Rachel A, and dissed him in the process breaking my poor Mine that Bird’s heart. It always pays to be faithful, A lesson learned.
Have a great and Blessed weekend.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Maureen–that broke my heart too. After all, MTB was in the money in all 3 Triple Crown races. Who else can say that?

JudyB. The mare Liberty Counsel was 50-1, and she won the Irish Grand National against males in a very determined way with her Z nose band. Her trainer, Dottie Love, said that her mares are the horses who keep her little stable on the map.

AINTREE RACECOURSE STATEMENT ON THE JOHN SMITH’S GRAND NATIONAL
66/1 SHOT AURORAS ENCORE WINS THE 2013 JOHN SMITH’S GRAND NATIONAL IN FRONT OF 70,000 SELLOUT CROWD
John Baker, Aintree and North West Regional Director for Jockey Club Racecourses, said:
“Once again the John Smith’s Grand National has thrown up an incredible sporting story of 66/1 shot Auroras Encore under Scotland’s Ryan Mania in front of a sold-out 70,000 crowd here at Aintree. He saw off some seriously strong competition in a typically thrilling Grand National that wasn’t decided until the iconic long run-in.

This is the video of the Grand National. Auroras Encore was chased home by a riderless horse who actually finished well. He was doing a Fort Larned. These horses are so well trained that they do not let a little thing like no jockey stop them from racing. LOL! Very happy to see that, despite the falls, no one was hurt. Good interview with winning trainer, Sue Smith, at the end.

Thank You so much for this video. I told my British friend at work I was going to try and find the race today to watch it also. She was pulling she said with her heart for Weird Al.

Peggy (N). Your friend has good taste. I love Weird Al. He’s one of my favorites. Looks like he made a mistake towards the end of the race, but at least he’s okay. There’s always next season.

Thanks, Max, I was looking forward to this year’s, in light of half the field falling last year, and all our discussions about that craziness — so nice this time that no one died, few even fell, and Auroras really came on to run away with it!
Max
Vicki B. The organizers spent a lot of time and money improving the course to make it safer for the horses and jockeys. It seems to have worked. There are still some traditionalists who did not want to make any change at all. I’m for change if it makes for safer racing conditions. The race is still a huge challenge, and is just as exciting, but now without that awful carnage. Last year was terrible.

Dear Max:
Thank you for this video. That view, at the start, of all the hurdles is so intimidating; got to have a brave heart as a rider and a horse. So thankful that no horse or rider was seriously injured. Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Yes, it is very intimidating even from afar. It was the first time riing for the jockey who won. He did very well. The horse on the other hand has all the experience, 11 and still going strong.

dear max it was a very good national perfect weather surprise winner 1st ride for the young jockey and most of all horses and riders back safe and sound am sure the improvements made to the jumps helped a lot and the shorter run-in to the first fence could hardly believe they jumped so many fences without a faller hoofray for the 2 welsh horses they ran great races to be 2nd and 3rd and also huge congrats to sue smith hugs sheena

Thanks for the video Max. I am nothing short of astounded. Have never seen anything like that in my short career of having any interest in racing. So many horses, so many jumps, so many folks down, so scary!!!!

Judy, Max, Sheena, & Sandy — much better than last year, when about half the field went unseated. Wildest thing I ever saw. Even though I read they all made it this time, watching the video, I still got nerves, waiting as they jumped each fence, especially Bechers. Loved Auroras running away with it.

Dear Ann: MOL (“Barbie”) is still in the paddock. Heard a discussion with Darren Clarken on Skysportsradio a day or so back. He said he hadn’t realised how “down” she was after her win – she’s putting on more weight, which he’s pleased about, and has absolutely no injury issues. But he’s a realistic bloke who said he wasn’t sure how she would go in the future, or where she would go. The connections are still very happy with the way he’s handling her. Still on Barbie, Lauren continues to get poor rides, with mixed results, but I guess that’s racing. Hope Moose and Goose are well, as are your nearest and dearest. Hugs, KathyR.

Great ride by Rosie on Gathering in the 8th at Keeneland! It was Gathering’s US debut, and apparently startled by the starting bell which she wasn’t accustomed to in Europe, Gathering went up in the air at the start and was way behind the field. Rosie patiently took her sweet time to reel the field in instead of rushing up and in the end won by nearly four lengths. “In truth Gathering was ten lengths the best.” “She’s a good horse.” “A lot of potential.”

Second Chance Pays for Emollient in Ashland
By Frank Angst, The Blood-Horse Updated: Saturday, April 6, 2013 6:27 PM
One week after finishing 30 lengths behind Dreaming of Julia, runaway winner of the Gulfstream Park Oaks (gr. II), Emollient delivered a decisive victory of her own in the $500,000 Central Bank Ashland Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland.
Juddmonte Farms homebred Emollient and Mike Smith quickly cleared the field after breaking from the outside in the field of 13 3-year-old fillies, enjoying a clear lead through a quarter mile in :23.75 and half mile in :48.12.
Entering the short Keeneland stretch, Emollient displayed another gear as she drew off to a nine-length victory under a hand ride. Emollient completed the 1 1/16-mile race on the Polytrack in 1:43.49.
“She was very comfortable out there; we weren’t getting challenged early,” said Smith, who was riding the Empire Maker filly for the first time. “I thought, ‘Well at some point I’m going to try to see if I can kick this race open.’ I did just before we headed for home and I was amazed at the burtst of speed she gave me.”
