Happy Monday!
We’re happy to share a few new photos of Coz in training. The folks at Mayberry Farm call him handsome, personable, and lovely to be around! He’s pictured here with his rider Ronaldo, who has been at Mayberry Farm since Zenyatta’s training. His kitty friend, Daisy, is shown perched at her regular spot above Coz’s stall.
When we recently asked for feedback and suggestions concerning the Zenyatta Shop, we received such a wonderful response. Thank you! It’s going to be a fun year with new product releases down the line.
Last but not least, at the bottom of this post you’ll find a special note from Ann Moss. She wanted to share a very sweet moment with all of you. Enjoy!
The last time I had seen Coz he was running around in his own paddock showing off for us and his buddies in the paddocks next to him. A very happy young man. This is the first time I had seen him since he started on his new life with Jeannie Mayberry, getting ready for what he was born to do… race. His racing career had begun. Jeannie had given him the same as his Mother: the last stall where he has perfect view of the whole barn and even the training track. Made me weep with joy (which I’ve been known to do smile) to see him standing there as he let me kiss his sweet nose, this big boy already grand and majestic receiving his saddle and his rider and proudly doing his lessons.
Later in the day standing in a gentle mist visiting with Zenny, I suddenly felt inclined to show her the video I had just taken earlier of her boy and knew how proud she would be of him, of how well he was doing with all his lessons and how Jeannie had said he was so smart and kind and how wonderfully he moves… She suddenly started her dance and tossing her head and turning her head to look at my iPhone! She totally knew she was watching her son Cozmic One and she was very proud. She especially liked the video of him getting his bath and she literally licked my phone! Reminding me yet again how I have to pick up my conversation with her. That she totally gets and understands All. Of course she and I have had many chats on the phone over the years and he’s always been around nosing in on our conversations, so it totally makes sense but still stunned me as well. So I wanted to share these constantly amazing Beings with YouS :) and say again Thanks! for all the Good Thoughts Well Being and Love YouS send to Them =)

Sad news about another breakdown at Santa Anita today–Cougarontheprowl. RIP,
Hugs to all.

Oh no!
I was afraid of that. RIP Cougarontheprowl.
I had the TV at work tuned to TVG this afternoon and was watching when she apparently took a bad step. I think Mike was riding and was okay. I know he hated that it happened. Cougarontheprowl was a beautiful horse and went off as the favorite. Now there is another angel in heaven.
Thank you for the update, Barbara. So sad.

Well, I normally don’t do this but….. One of our kitties, Stinker has been diagnosed with “Pyometra.” For the second time in a month. As of now, the only options we have are spaying (not a normal spay) continued meds or put her down. The surgery will cost anywhere’s up to 800.00.
I’m not sure what to do since, we don’t have that kind of $$ on hand. I’ll call her normal vet tomorrow to see what we can come up with. I was also informed about “CareCredit.” Which is a pet credit card that allows you to have payments.
Please, just keep Stinker and the rest of her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Will keep Stinker and you in my prayers. Love and Hugs, JB

Heidi, Will keep little Stinker in my prayers.
One of our local Humane Societies has an adjoining clinic that does more than just shots and spay at a very reduced cost. Perhaps you can find one nearby.

Heidi-add my voice to all who have expressed concern. Keep us posted. We care.
HeidiK, Vallejo,Ca
I was getting ready to post and it vanished.
Anyways, talked to our vet and surgery is the only cure. I told them that neither of us qualified for the credit card and since, we’ve been clients for so long, they can spread out the payments to 3. We’re cash people! So, she will go in early Monday morning for surgery. They also said that the surgery might take up to 4 hrs since, it’s a major surgery.
When Cindy told me that she had the funds and after talking to our vet, I just bawled! I guess, from the relieve that Stinker will get better and that Cindy could pull this off and thankful to her Boss’s? Or, just the overwhelming feeling of people coming together in this case to help.
So, Monday, please say a special prayer for our Stinker!
BTW.. ( I forgot who asked about her name?) We went looking for one kitten after Mia’s sister passed. Cindy came across a woman in Oakland that had two girls and two boys. Precious took to me right off and then, Stinks to Cindy. We couldn’t imagine separating the girls so we took both. Our first stop before home was the bar to show off the new family members. We wanted to name Stinker, Lil Shit or LS! Because, she was and still is. Our friends named her Stinker and also named Precious.
So the Female household consists of two Humans and three kitties. LOL And guess what, they rule the house, we are only servants to their every need.

@Heidi Am so sorry about Stinker. Over in the UK we can get vouchers from the RSPCA to help towards the cost of treatment.Have you tried anyone of the charities? Hope all goes well thinking of you.Hugs Sheena
HeidiK, Vallejo,Ca
Sheena, the aspca here offers vouchers as well but, not for this type of surgery. Cindy got the funds needed from her job that she can pay back weekly or bi-weekly. I still need to talk to her normal vet to see what else we can do besides surgery or, if that’s the only option. At least we can breathe a sigh of relieve knowing that we have the funds needed.

Always remember that certain circumstances are not ours to alter. We make the most of them and go on. We can only be examples, never controllers of other people’s lives, other people’s children, other people’s circumstances. Some would have us believe we contribute to harsh events by doing nothing. But some of the best work, some of the deepest caring and doing is not physically evident in the beginning. Help of amy kind must be wanted and recognized before it can do any good. Too much help where it is not appreciated can make even a good person helpless. We have to be wise in our giving, and particularly wise in what we withhold,, because it may be what we withhold helps the most.
We were contented to let things remain as the Great Spirit made them.

Quick note to my ZEN family. My mother fell twice last weekend. The second time, she fractured her hip. So she’s now in hospital having received a partial hip replacement and not doing all that well. No idea what the next few weeks will yield….
But I wanted to share this: attached, the RADIO broadcast of Man O’ War’s funeral, posted to me by a reader on THE VAULT. I’m guessing this is a pretty rare archive, even if it is now on YouTube.
And ….. guess what? LANE”s END is now following THE VAULT!!!!!!! Do we think that our Zenny whispered in their ear?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQX0LH1HsQg
ANN: I just LOVED your Zenny Diary & this anecdote continues the legend insofar as our Zenny is anything but “just a horse” — I mean, horses just don’t do things like recognizing their firstborn on video. WOW!
I sure hope that Zenny’s forthcoming DVD — whenever its ready — spends some time on this aspect of her personality because it’s just so special.
And COZ: WHAT A BIG BOY! And looking so much like Zenny even at two years.
Love & hugs to all. Peppermint kisses to my big girl and her outstanding boys.

Thank you Ann for sharing your visit with Z and how she watched Coz on your phone!
Shortly before Zenyatta moved from Hollywood Park to Kentucky, I went to visit her at Barn 55. Along with a few others, I got to spend nearly 2 hours with her as she went for her walk around the barn, got her bath, had a bit of grazing time, and repeatedly came over for hugs, pats, kisses, and just hanging out. She doesn’t miss a beat. I have never in my life seen such an intelligent horse. In fact, horse almost seems like the wrong word to use, because she was completely keyed in on all human activities going on around her and completely comfortable in her role as a superstar, pulling up her head and posing just so, any time anyone lifted a camera, even from 20 feet away. And she noticed everything around her, and was so completely friendly and gentle. I will never forget that day, to meet a mind and a soul like hers.
I have often wondered if race horses really understand what their “job” is, ie, to cross the finish line first. After spending time with Zenyatta I’d say she understands everything that’s going on, and her way of hanging back and then turning on the speed at the end just in time to ensure victory was because that’s how she wanted to play it– she knew what her job was and her capabilities, and she got it done. If she somehow communicates that to her offspring–well, then won’t we all just have a ball watching them race!
I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, a million thanks to John Sherriffs and Ann and Jerry Moss for allowing Zenyatta to spend time with so many people and touch their lives so profoundly.
In addition, with Zenyatta as your ambassador, you have done inestimable good for the sport of horse racing.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks for sharing this with us Crista and providing another opportunity for those of us who never had the chance to do so in person to “see” Zenyatta through someone else’s eyes. Amen about John and the Mosses. I will never forget watching and listening to John on 60 Minutes – my introduction to Zenyatta!
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks, Crista. I had always wanted to visit Zenny at Barn 55, but was not able, so I very much enjoy hearing your take on it.
vicki
WOW! That video of MOW was fantastic. If only racing could return to the popularity it once enjoyed. The internet certainly provides us with a way to follow and learn about the exciting world of thoroughbreds. Before Zenyatta I watched only a few races a year but now I am an avid fan. Thank you dear Zenny.

Just about all of the great horses of the past can be seen on you tube.

Terry – No response from you to my Game on Dude soap box speech that was specifically designed to create a dialogue and to receive your usual very clever responses – although every word about my being a die hard Dude fan is true and I root for him every time he runs. I’m especially surprised you haven’t taken me up on the .10 cent bet for tomorrow’s race.
Well, all I can say is that the ball is in your court and game on, dude (pun intended). Looking forward to your position on this matter.
Terry Crow
I missed your challenge. I will go back to read it and respond appropriately.
Terry Crow
OK, Rosemary, I will now respond. Like you, I fully expect GOD to win on Saturday. After all aren’t these the same horses he usually beats? I, too, have my favorites and if someone disparages them I will respond in an appropriate manner, as you did. I respect your knowledge of all things pertaining to horses. And, besides that, I like you. Your analysis of the way GOD likes to run his races is spot-on. I don’t think, however, that Bejarano should have lost the mount. The first time he rode him, it was a perfect result as the horse was rated, somewhat. It is hard to knock his subsequent ride in the BCC as it was the same sort of a ride. However, the competition was much stronger and the track bias was different. Yes, his race in the BCC against Drosselmeyer was superb and if there had not been so much distance between them he probably would have won. I guess we can agree to disagree.
Rosemary McCauley
Agree with your “agree to disagree” and possibly could agree with your view of the stewards’ decision regarding disqualification but prefer to walk the fence on that one since it was in favor of the Dude.
Dude is running against one of the Mosses’ horses on Saturday trained by John. Makes it difficult to choose between them, but …..
I hope he and all horses and riders over the weekend have a safe trip. After all, that’s what is important. It is nice having a discussion between parties with different views. Thanks for your response. Looking forward to more RNC jokes.
Terry Crow
Rosemary-You are one of my favorite people on the blog. You are still president of your chapter if the RN club ever convenes another meeting. It is a pleasure to engage in a “conversation” with you.
