Happy Monday!
We’re happy to share a few new photos of Coz in training. The folks at Mayberry Farm call him handsome, personable, and lovely to be around! He’s pictured here with his rider Ronaldo, who has been at Mayberry Farm since Zenyatta’s training. His kitty friend, Daisy, is shown perched at her regular spot above Coz’s stall.
When we recently asked for feedback and suggestions concerning the Zenyatta Shop, we received such a wonderful response. Thank you! It’s going to be a fun year with new product releases down the line.
Last but not least, at the bottom of this post you’ll find a special note from Ann Moss. She wanted to share a very sweet moment with all of you. Enjoy!
The last time I had seen Coz he was running around in his own paddock showing off for us and his buddies in the paddocks next to him. A very happy young man. This is the first time I had seen him since he started on his new life with Jeannie Mayberry, getting ready for what he was born to do… race. His racing career had begun. Jeannie had given him the same as his Mother: the last stall where he has perfect view of the whole barn and even the training track. Made me weep with joy (which I’ve been known to do smile) to see him standing there as he let me kiss his sweet nose, this big boy already grand and majestic receiving his saddle and his rider and proudly doing his lessons.
Later in the day standing in a gentle mist visiting with Zenny, I suddenly felt inclined to show her the video I had just taken earlier of her boy and knew how proud she would be of him, of how well he was doing with all his lessons and how Jeannie had said he was so smart and kind and how wonderfully he moves… She suddenly started her dance and tossing her head and turning her head to look at my iPhone! She totally knew she was watching her son Cozmic One and she was very proud. She especially liked the video of him getting his bath and she literally licked my phone! Reminding me yet again how I have to pick up my conversation with her. That she totally gets and understands All. Of course she and I have had many chats on the phone over the years and he’s always been around nosing in on our conversations, so it totally makes sense but still stunned me as well. So I wanted to share these constantly amazing Beings with YouS :) and say again Thanks! for all the Good Thoughts Well Being and Love YouS send to Them =)

URGENT RESCUE MESSAGE from our esteemed friend Marlene Dodge of Valley View Ranch Equine Rescue:
“A group of VERY pregnant mares were dropped off at the Fallon Auction. The kill buyers will be sitting front and center at the auction, ready to buy them for shipment.
I am currently raising funds to buy as many of them as we can. The estimated price of each mare is about $450.00 and there are about 13 to 17 mares. I have other rescues that are willing to take 1 or 2 if we can raise the funds to save them. I am going to take two here also. Some of the other rescues are trying to raise funds too.
Please consider helping us raise enough funds to save them all.
Go to http://www.valleyviewranchequinerescue.org go to the donation button and note Feb 12 2014 rescue.” (end quote)
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD THE AUCTION IS THIS AFTERNOON! Paypal donations will be available immediately. We only have a couple hours to raise the funds before the sale. Please join me in doing what you can!

Marlene Dodge says ALL the mares will be saved, and they and their foals will now have the best of care. Sufficient funds have been raised for their purchase, and places at trusted rescues have been found. This was a tremendous task to accomplish in the little time we had. Again, bless you and all who pitched in to help!

I got an email that all the mares were saved, and a thank you from them.
God bless each and every person involved.
Personally, I’d rather donate to “rescuing horses” from all backgrounds (not just Tb) than to “own one”. My income is not enough to do both, that’s why I choose rescuing!

Stinker update:
I am so pleased and delighted with Stinks progress! Here’s a funny few things that happened earlier today. 1) She was walking around and came back into the living room and her cone was covered in cat liter (LOL). Well, we know her bodily functions are ok. 2) I walked into the kitchen for gatorade and, low and behold, Stinks was on the kitchen counter eating her food. I was like: how in the world did you get up there? I didn’t want her to jump down, so I carefully picked her up and put her down with her dish. I’ve also been adding a lil kibble into her wet food and, she gobbles it up. Last night she laid on the couch with me and I gently rubbed her tummy and she just purred and purred and then, got up and started to need the blankies. It’s only been 3 days since her major surgery and she is awesome like the Champ we know, love and adore.

Dear Max Kauto is excited to be going to the Festival on the Tuesday. Why not parade him on Gold Cup day??Moosie’s trying his hand (or hoof) at curling now! Nothing will shame the Danes.I always consider myself British NEVER European!
I loved anything Disney,as a family we loved Donald Duck cartoons still do,always preferred him to Mickey somehow. I remember,as a 5yr old, making my first visit to the cinema to see”Lady and the Tramp”and now I have the DVD.We survived, just about, another storm today you’ll read all about it in the British papers winds in parts of Wales reached 108mph.Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. I think that the Brits always have a first class Olympic curling team. Moosie might be good at this as it involves very little running, some sliding and no jumps. I wonder if the Moose can wield a broom? Bravo to Kauto on his next outing. Saw that he was asking Laura for a full English breakfast. What a cheeky horse!
108 mph is bad. Floods look miserable, but Dave is pledging help.
You’re right about no shame. When I read that story about plans to kill the second giraffe, I was stunned. Let the giraffes go to people who will look after them.
You Brits tossed out invading Danes for a reason. Rule Britannia!

February 13 Cherokee Devotional
Once a person gets despair out of the way, few things can slow his progress. Despair is the dividing line between those who can take impossibility in stride and those who wilt at the first sign of opposition. Too much energy is absorbed in despair. Strength gives way to weakness and weakness robs us of the will to overcome. Anything that wastes energy should be left behind. Energy cuts doubt to the bone. When a word of power is spoken, new strength is generated. Power words are not just u wo du hi, pretty words, but strong words of courage that are heard in the ear and then in the heart where they stay to do a perfect work.
This is a serious time with you. May the Lord bring you out of all your troubles. Trust your course with Him.

Terry – as I have said in the past, I am a fan of your humor and would like to add my own attempt by providing the following “definitions”.
Dozen, v. and adv. – The negative or opposite of an expected action or reaction. “If that DOZEN make you laugh, then you don’t know what’s funny,”
Jacket, v. and n. To raise a specified object on a sturdy portable device, using leverage. “You can’t change the tires until you JACKET up.”
Spa, v. and n. Interrogative regarding one’s direct male progenitor. “I know Ma’s around but SPA here?”
Apologizing in advance for the following political theme:
Georgia, n and adv. A phrase connecting a person named George to a direct object, “Dick Cheney shot him, but I’m sure they’re gonna give old GEORGIA hard time about it.”
This one I took liberties with, but the definition is the same: Market, v. and n. “To note something in writing. “Ebby is running in the second race at Santa Anita on Thursday, February 13, 2014, so make sure to MARKET on your calendar.”
and finally,
Sioux Falls, n and v. A person named Susan going from a high position to a lower one because of gravitational pull. “Sue drinks, SIOUX FALLS”

Just a quick note. I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it, but Eblouissante is racing today (Feb. 13) at Santa Anita. I think it’s the second race, an allowance. Runs around 1:30 west coast time, 4:30 in the East.

I just heard that on HRTV this morning! We get HRTV on tv here at work and I was so excited to hear! Apparently she has been sold but was put right back with Sheriffs. He must keep some of his horses out here with an assistant trainer? I will juggle my lunch hour to watch!
Terry Crow
It has occurred to me that all of this bad weather may play havoc with the Derby. There is not that much more time for trainers to ready their charges and horses stabled at places like Fairgrounds and Oaklawn, not to mention Aqueduct, are probably nowhere near ready to run in the qualifying races. I would think a few top horses will not be in the starting gate the first Saturday in May.
Ann NC
Now we know why you are The TC GP!
We will have to get a Winter Turf course like in Geneva, is that where it is?
It’s always something…..
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Are you thinking of some specific horses Terry? I can’t seem to manage to follow where they all train closely enough to know who might be affected.
Terry Crow
No, I was just musing. There should be an article pretty soon in the DRF concerning the contenders. But, I do think that the current weather will be a factor. Trainers are a tricky bunch. Whatever problems they have will be kept close to the vest until big time media like the DRF or Blood Horse queries them on it. I would be very careful in placing any bets on the future book.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Ah – the future book. Another thing I don’t “get.” :-)

Out here we kind of take good weather for granted. However, when I read or hear of the problems that my good friends are having I cringe. There has been a lot of news lately about North Carolina weather, all of it bad.

Dear Terry,
Depends on your perspective, I guess. It’s not all bad — it’s sort of like I remember winter when I was growing up here, sweet memories. I am still that child — on the inside! I am happy as long as the electricity stays on!
Enjoy your day! Hugs

Marshall-I realize that the weather is not all bad, thank God. But, the only time the weather makes the news is when it is something bad being reported. As for you still being that child only on the inside, don’t sell yourself short.

We’re getting about a foot more of snow and ice here in New England today — once you get inland. I’m right on the coast south of Boston, so this time we’re getting wind, rain and slush. Its a great day to stay home, snuggle in a fleece and watch Ebby run — but I do wish I could join you and others at Santa Anita today! 80 degrees…..I can only dream.

I did see that article and really enjoyed it.. It reminds me that John is a truly amazing trainer, always thinking of making horses as healthy and happy as they can possibly be, from every possible perspective. I admire and respect him so much.
I wonder if Zenny takes a year off, if they would ever try some dressage training. She is so beautifully balanced, and as we all know and love, she has already displayed her own natural talent….just a thought.

Just have to comment on some Olympic news and college basketball news that is of great interest in my community here in central NY:
Erin Hamlin of Remsen, NY won a bronze medal (first time ever) in luge and is entered in a relay today but don’t know how she did yet.!!
Syracuse won last night at Pittsburgh and are 24-0!
We can not be prouder of them.
Sending love to you beautiful Zenyatta, your handsome Cozmic One and that red prince growing so big!
Hoping your 1/2 sister Ebby runs a great race and all are safe and sound.

Saw that luge competition on TV and she and everyone in your area should be proud of her accomplishment. She was the first one to medal for the US and only one person will ever be able to say that. The Orangemen have been very strong this year and have to be one of the favorites for the NCAA tourney. Is Jim Boeheim still the coach?

@Sheena-Where, indeed, would we be without our memories? @Rosemary-I may have asked you this before, if so I apologize for being redundant. Who is the best horse you have ever ridden?
Rosemary McCauley
Terry – Hard question to answer – We received many young horses that had been purchased for $$$ to begin their “classes” like Coz is doing now but not all had been officially named and were referred to by nicknames. One particularly high strung colt, immediately became “Santa Anita” even though he was Kentucky bred. Another especially fine filly was “Aqueduct.” Some had nicknames such as “that bay filly that bites” or the red colt who kicked you”. Almost all of these fillies and colts were then either turned out to grow and develop or went to their respective trainers without my learning of their official names, and the news that came back to us was along the lines of “Santa Anita won a stakes or an allowance, etc., over the weekend”. One of the fastest was a gray horse with races under his belt, that I worked 3/8s one morning and the clocker (Harvey- an ex rider, I wish I could remember his last name), put his work on the board rather than hand timing him, and he set a track workout record for the distance without being asked. Afterwards, in the track kitchen, he came to me about how fast the horse worked in spite of no company, not being asked and under a hold and said “I’ve never seen anybody sit as still as you did in that work.” I can’t recall this horse’s name either but if I can dredge up any of the names, I will share.
Terry Crow
Thanks, Rosemary. It is interesting to get this type of news from someone who has been there and done that.

In terms of race experience, she’s still a baby. She nevertheless looked good. She just needs to pick the right moment and that comes with practice. Beautiful looking horse like her sister.

Hmm..if Ebby’s performance was due to being off the track so long even after she was sold, that is not her fault. Adore John, but at age 5 she cannot get any track experience spending her life just breezing and working out. Just thinking outloud no judgement intended, so please no reprimand.
Max
You’re right. A horse can only learn to win races by racing. Hope that she is on her way and she gets more race time.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I believe that John had been looking for a race that fit her (or that she fit however this works) for quite some time. Don’t think it was intentional on his part.
Terry Crow
She suffered some trauma in her last race and a horse sometimes need to take some time off to forget what happened. When I first started betting on the horses one of the handicapping angles is that 75% of the races were won by a horse who had started in the preceding 15 days. Now, it is difficult to find one who has done so.
