Happy Monday!
We’re happy to share a few new photos of Coz in training. The folks at Mayberry Farm call him handsome, personable, and lovely to be around! He’s pictured here with his rider Ronaldo, who has been at Mayberry Farm since Zenyatta’s training. His kitty friend, Daisy, is shown perched at her regular spot above Coz’s stall.
When we recently asked for feedback and suggestions concerning the Zenyatta Shop, we received such a wonderful response. Thank you! It’s going to be a fun year with new product releases down the line.
Last but not least, at the bottom of this post you’ll find a special note from Ann Moss. She wanted to share a very sweet moment with all of you. Enjoy!
The last time I had seen Coz he was running around in his own paddock showing off for us and his buddies in the paddocks next to him. A very happy young man. This is the first time I had seen him since he started on his new life with Jeannie Mayberry, getting ready for what he was born to do… race. His racing career had begun. Jeannie had given him the same as his Mother: the last stall where he has perfect view of the whole barn and even the training track. Made me weep with joy (which I’ve been known to do smile) to see him standing there as he let me kiss his sweet nose, this big boy already grand and majestic receiving his saddle and his rider and proudly doing his lessons.
Later in the day standing in a gentle mist visiting with Zenny, I suddenly felt inclined to show her the video I had just taken earlier of her boy and knew how proud she would be of him, of how well he was doing with all his lessons and how Jeannie had said he was so smart and kind and how wonderfully he moves… She suddenly started her dance and tossing her head and turning her head to look at my iPhone! She totally knew she was watching her son Cozmic One and she was very proud. She especially liked the video of him getting his bath and she literally licked my phone! Reminding me yet again how I have to pick up my conversation with her. That she totally gets and understands All. Of course she and I have had many chats on the phone over the years and he’s always been around nosing in on our conversations, so it totally makes sense but still stunned me as well. So I wanted to share these constantly amazing Beings with YouS :) and say again Thanks! for all the Good Thoughts Well Being and Love YouS send to Them =)

To all the lovely folks who frequent this wonderful blog:
Heartfelt thanks to all who posted birthday greetings to me — some of those being: Peggy, Sally B., Rosemary, Celeste, TC, Kathy, Barbara W., Debbie G., Ann (NC), Judy B., Sandy, Heidi, Shirlee, Carol (Arkansas), and to any that I may not have mentioned due to a few missing brain-cells! I have had a smashing weekend — lots of good food, friends and walks with my dear doggies. To top it off, all these lovely greetings from the Z’sters here. Thanks a million! Love and Lots of Hugs

Game on dude recover and have rest in paddock with mates, don’t race before you will feel light health, Coz breeze lightly and not long time on clean from stones and branches of trees and soft course, then well walk and rest in paddock, i am not sure, from my far hill of view, Candy boy have part of time like Coz and don’t claim all races you see in front of you, races is not mares :-), choose horses, training mates or kind friendly horses, choose surface of course, soft or sloppy, don’t choose dry or frozen hard course, care of back and legs, choose weather that you like when you breeze, may be other way of this,…..lil light luck Ebby…….., don’t stumbl in gate, wait quietly, free mad moose :-)

Turn around right where you are and face the frightening situation, the lion, hlvdaji, on your path. Don’t waver and dodge. Look the problem in the eye and call it nothing. Speak to it in definitive words so that there is no doubt that it must go. Wisdom tells us to get out of harm’s way at times , but it never tells us to weep with fear. Once we turn to face it, a quiet determined strength pours in to end the terror. Fear is terrorism. It is not running from it that cripples us but refusing to call it what it is. When fear takes over it flows through all our thinking. If we have any faith at all, it is scared faith, but faith will grow when we charge it with determination and powerful words.
Make everything straight and strong.

RIP Marius the young giraffe at Copenhagen Zoo slaughtered and then cruelly butchered in front of children. So sad.Hugs Sheena
Kathy
Sheena,
What a HORRIBLE story. This makes me cringe. RIP Marius.
Kathy
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
This is unbelievable. Why couldn’t they just turn this young, healthy animal out to the wild and if that wasn’t possible, look for and transport him to another facility that would be willing to take him. I don’t understand this at all. RIP Marius. Love and Hugs, JB
Z13Rulz
They could not return him to the wild because he was captive bred and born. He would not survive and would have ended up either starving or prey for predators.
While I understand what I’m about to write will not be popular I have to ask, how is what happened to this giraffe any worse than the millions of perfectly healthy dogs and cats who are left frightened and alone to be gassed to death, a slow and less humane death than a well placed captive bolt, in local shelters every year?
The answer is this animal was treated with care and dignity up till the moment he was killed and afterwards his death was used to educate on animal husbandry and also to feed predators as his body would have in the wild.
Is it a good situation, no. Was it the Zoo’s only option? The director has explained the decision process that went into this and why they ultimately came to this option. Personally the question I’d like answered (which no one seems to be bothering to ask) is WHY was this giraffe bred in the first place? If the oversight on breeding is so closely monitored how is it no one took steps to prevent his conception in the first place AND more importantly, what steps have been taken to ensure this situation does not arise again.
Terry Crow
Is this sort of thing sanctioned by the Danish government? If so, I will have to rethink my opinion of how civilized they are.
HeidiK, Vallejo,Ca
I heard something about this on the news last night but, didn’t pay much attention. I read a few articles about this today and just cringed. There were other options for the Giraffe. If you ask me, this is barbaric in every since of the word. Then, to have children watch the butchering? Yikes! RIP Marius
Maryp NY
I agree Heidi, it is barbaric to do such a thing. It certainly doesn’t define the word “humane” when this youngster could have gone to other zoos or sanctuaries.
They dismembered it in front of a group of people including children and fed it to the lions according to the report I read!
It is stomach turning and just plain wrong.(period)
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
If the zoo was so concerned about inbreeding and having surplus animals then why didn’t they abort the fetus or better yet prevent the pregnancy??? This SICKENS me!
Max
Sheena. I agree with you, Judy B and others. This is a horrible end for a noble beast. Giraffes are herbivores so that as long as there are acacia trees available to them they do not need any training on how to survive in the wild. Their only real predators are lions, but lions tend to look for easier prey to take down than these giants. I fail to understand how any child could benefit from seeing a gentle creature killed, dismembered and fed to lions. I loved giraffes as a child and seeing this would have traumized me. I cannot even stand to hear about it now. Horrible.
shirleeinindy
I agree with all of you all. Someone needs to investigate this and the zoo. I know lions have to eat too but to have children watch is terrible.

Thank you Sheena. I took her in this morning and she should be in surgery as we speak. I was told to call around 2 or 3 to see if she’s ready to come home. I just hope Mia and Precious aren’t mean to her when she comes home.
Terry Crow
We are all pulling for stinker.
HeidiK, Vallejo,Ca
Just talked to the vet and the surgery went smooth. I asked what they found and she said that the uterus was full of puss. That it was a good thing we caught it when we did and had the surgery otherwise, her uterus would have exploded in a few days. Our poor baby girl! She should be ready to come home in a couple of hours.

Dear Shirlee:
Your Lea ran a very impressive race in the Donn; congrats to him. The dratted JV wasn’t a problem in this one. Love and Hugs, JB
Ann NC
JB,
Lea, a member of the Chess Club, ran across the finish line and gave the media a big, Check Mate! Almost all of those handicappers from the popular web sites gave him dismal chances of winning.
Glad he had folks who believed in him and then was put with a trainer who could tap into that talent. Running 2nd to, Dan gave him game, too. Good lessons from, Dan! Race day training!
Love my, WTC and proud of his run. The final stretch run photo of those two is fantastic and telling of their different running styles, love them both. Nothing better than races like these, makes a Monday so much better…with snow and ice ahead…e-gads.
Shirlee…are you still on cloud 9? Hope so!
Hugs!
Terry Crow
Very impressive race by both horses. WTC never quit and it was many lengths back to the third horse. I would have thought that WTC would not run such a good race as he has had an extensive time on the track without a break. Hope he comes here to run in the SA handicap.
shirleeinindy
Ann and Judy, Yes, I am still on cloud 9 over Leas win. He sure is a pretty boy and a talented boy. His sire First Samurai is beginning to get some good runners.
WTC has nothing to be ashamed of. He had been off for awhile and had not had a race over that track. I know we will be hearing more about him this year.
Hope Lea and my boy Muchie don’t run into each other this year.

Dear Ann, TC GP and Shirlee:
Yes, WTC ran very well too for not having raced since November. Lea ran a great race. I was hoping to see Revolutionary do well; will have to wait ’til next time.

OK, Max, as per your request I am posting a talking horse joke. It is politically incorrect, though. Therefore, I apologize to all who may be offended. I hope you will let me return to the blog after this. President Obama came to North Carolina to gather support for his health care plan. Noting that he was in the south, he spoke with a southern drawl and used single syllable words. As he was doing that, he kept swatting at some flies that were buzzing around his head. A horse in a nearby corral said “Y’all having trouble with them circle flies?” Astounded at the talking horse, the President stopped talking and said “Well, yes, if that’s what they are called, but Ive never heard of circle flies.” “Well, sir,” the horse replied, “thems called circle flies because they always gather around the back end of a horse. I know of which I speak.” “Oh,” the President replied, as he begin to restart his speech. “Wait a minute,” the President said, “Are you called me a horse’s behind?” “No sir,” said the horse. I have too much respect for the people of this country to call their president such a thing.” After a long pause, the horse then said “Hard to fool them flies, though.”

Dear Z13rulZ I have to agree with you about the millions of cats and dogs that are destroyed every year just because they aren’t wanted or are too”old”but I still believe it was wrong to kill a healthy animal especially as alternative homes were offered. The way we treat animals says a lot about us as human beings. What makes us human I’ve heard asked many times maybe a young giraffe could answer???Hugs Sheena

Dear Max Reading the mail online yesterday heard that some lions and cubs were destroyed at Longleat during the winter when the park was closed. Their carers were very upset Henry a lion and Louisa a lioness plus her cubs died. The excuse was inbreeding again, have’nt they heard of contraception??I always felt wild animals were safe in Zoos and wildlife parks now I know they are never safe from human intervention. So sad. Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Just heard about these lions. Shocking. There is now an on line petition calling for the sacking of the Copenhagen zoo staff. If they thought that this idea of slaughtering a beautiful giraffe and publicly feeding him to lions in front of children was a good idea and positive publicity for that zoo, they were obviously incredibly wrong. They are also getting death threats.
Bluegrass Girl
Max
One of the many things that puzzle me about this horrible story is this.
If this young giraffe could not be kept in a European zoo (per some contractual breeding agreement between zoos), why not ship him to USA, Canada or Australia zoo?
Animals are transported all the times. Fed Ex might have done it free.
Great save-the-giraffe promotion.
The keepers at this zoo had very limited vision.
And, apparently very little concern for the well being of an animal In their care and for the visitors especially children who come to the zoo.
It is beyond my understanding.
BGG
Max
BGG. Apparently all rescue proposals were rejected. A UK place where his brother lives offered to take in Marius. Cannot believe that this happened either.

Not me! I’m rooting for the Doberman, whoever that turns out to be. (Hoping it’s Fifi.) I much prefer not to see a Toy win–again! I still haven’t forgiven that judge for putting up that poor Pekingese two years ago in preference to Fifi. She was robbed.
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Laura,
I agree about the Peke over the Dobie!
In the final line-up last night, I was pulling for the Bloodhound, the Wire Fox Terrier, or the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Probably at little preference for the Corgi since they are always overlooked in the herding group and are overshadowed by the Pembroke.
I really do not like what some groomers do to create those ridiculous, over-exaggerated “fluff jobs”. Really grotesque hairdos, Ick.

Many things from the past echo faintly within us-voices, sounds, thoughts. Only a few ring clear like a bell from many long ago seasons. Persistent memories call us back to deal with details-some of them best forgotten. Why do we remember? Perhaps to clarify what we feel, to help us be more objective about the present moment. Or maybe to force us to see the pattern of our own lives so that we may throw our events that have been obstacles. Sometimes we remember just so we can be grateful. Like the well-fed cog that turns primitive at the sight of a bone, we pick up on our own instincts and react before we think. If we see what is about to happen we can meet it with good humor and have less need to make everyone in the present time pay dearly for what happened so long ago.
I want peace, that we may…sleep in our houses and rise in peace on both sides.

That is so devastating but you’re right it could have been worse… to think what she could have been…. I look forward to following her babies! Interesting enough found a full sister to her named Margin Trade (2009 to 2012 – RIP) who ran two starts and won races by 6 & 1/4 lengths and 9 & 3/4 lengths… some fast genes there :) Hope to see some more of her siblings! was unable to find after her that are named.
I also hope she passes on her ‘spots’ :-)
