Happy Friday!
Alys recently spent some time with both Zenyatta and her colt. She sent us these photos of Zenyatta getting some attention in her stall and the yearlings enjoying winter weather out in the paddock.
We are also proud that Bloodhorse has named the birth of Zenyatta’s colt the most popular story of 2012. You can see the whole “2012 in Review” newsletter by clicking this link.

Happy,Happy Birthday Dear Karen–Hope you’ve been having the wonderful day you deserve!!! Loved the message above saying that your day should be as fabulous as YOU are—for you surely ARE fabulous!!! So glad to have met you at the BC and so look forward to seeing you at BC 2013!!!!
@ Sign-Loved your prayer of the 14th!!–just now saw it –I do so believe that God makes his blessings known often inthe sweet moments with our furry friends and in moments of beauty. You said it so well.
Was catching up on past posts a few days ago and noticed Terry talking about a place with a piece of the Berlin Wall—I actually have several pieces of the Wall, imbedded in a small art piece I bought at an art gallery here. It is a small figure of a man, done in a kind of poured Lucite-type material. I have always wanted to frame it against a Time cover from the fall of the Wall–wouldn’t that be effective?
Noticed another post talking about a Carole King song. She actually has a ranch in the mountains near here and shops here in our store. I have known her for years and she is a really marvelous person. One year, when she hadn’t lived here long, she actually sang in a local Christmas performance of the Messiah,as part of the local choir!! Pretty neat!!She is much loved by all around here for her sweet and natural ways. If you love to read, check out her book about her life,Natural Woman–it is great. She autographed my copy, which I treasure. Living here where so many stars come to ski in the winter and fly fish and all in the summer and fall is fun–you never know who will turn up in our store. This past holiday I looked up to help a sweet lady and found that it was Drew Barrymore!! While we were talking,up came her friend—Cameron Diaz!!! They were SO neat!!! They were so unaffected and friendly–I couldn’t believe how down to earth they were. Have met a lots of stars here and am always disappointed when they are aloof and/or unfriendly. Those two were folks you’d love to invite home for soup and sandwiches!!
Now for the latest Barnaby and Traveller updates!! Last Saturday when we went down to play with them, the thermometer on Sue’s Explorer read 13 below zero!! We have been having a real cold snap here for the past couple of weeks–just brutallycold!! Saturday,I’m sure they were really happy to get into the arena and play. They just tore around!! Then we had to get them groomed up and ready for their “other Uncle Tom” (we call Rancher Tom their uncle),the farrier Tom Riney,a really famous farrier who has worked on race horses in Kentucky!! He came and trimmed their hooves and they were both so good for him, He is a wonderful person,so knowledgeable and so kind with the horses–and–he has a GREAT sense of humor. He is making us each a custom hoof pick made out of a horse shoe, with a horse head on it fashioned fo resemble our horses–pretty neat!! We didn’t ride,as Sue had to get back early to go to work. Hopefully,Barnaby’s new bit will arrive by Saturday, and I will try it out on him. He got an extra visit today,as Sue had gone down to Twin Falls yesterday to visit her dad. On her way back today, she stopped at the Susie Q–since barn rules there are that one person can only bring in one horse at a time, she brought Barnaby in to play and then to ride him. He had so much fun–tearing around the arena for a few minutes first and then getting special attention being groomed and ridden. She said he was really good and behaved really well–he hasn’t been ridden for several weeks. She said it was really funny though–he was quite distressed to be in the arena all alone and whinnied!! She loves to make fun of his whinny,as it is kind of pathetic–sounds like he just lost his last friend–and isn’t very loud. She said he “tried out his whinny”–. I think it is a cute whinny, kind of sweet–but it does sound a bit “girly” I guess. Anyway,I was glad he had the extra visit and attention–he so loves being the center of things! It was a bit warmer today–and it is supposed to get even warmer in the next few days–up to 30 during the day. Now,if we could just get some more snow!!
Love the new pictures–we’re SO lucky!! I got the impression that Ebby may be racing tomorrow–haven’t read all of the pages in the new post yet. If she is,will be waiting eagerly to hear how she does! Hope she wins by lots and “blows ’em all away!!
Love to you all–peaceful night to all and safe travels to all racing tomorrow!!

Love your post updates on Barnaby and Traveller. Please keep them coming. How about that DB and CD. Wow! Hugs, JB

Dear Sue,
What a great post! Always love to hear your Traveller and Barnaby John stories — just the best! Also, love hearing about your life at the store and in Sun Valley. Sounds like a wonderful place to live. How much fun to see DB and CD, too.
I am all for snow, too! We have been short-changed in snowflakes here in NC for the past year or two, and don’t get me started on the ’90’s decade. The first time in my life that we had no snow was in 1990, and that continued until 2000 when we got 20 inches at once!! I am a native of this state and have fond memories of winter snows in childhood and adolescence — 4″, 6″, 8″ and a few 1-3″ dustings were quite common. I know this is small potatoes compared to the upper tier states, but I sure miss the white stuff. It beats the heck out of summer here!
Happy New Year! Cheers and hugs!

PS:
Love the whinny story. Jethro was very much a “strong, silent” guy.
Never “said” much verbally. One night after riding him, took him out
to his paddock (he had night turnout) and it was dark. On the way out,
and he had never done this before, he let out a huge whinny. Like he was calling to his “friends” to make sure they were in the paddock waiting. He is
“codependent” always has to have a friend with him or he really gets
very very very “upset” (a good TB term). Horses are soooo funny.
Terry Crow
Sue-Your posts are truly marvelous and very much anticipated. Good to hear that some of the well-known people you come in contact with are good people. As you (and I) are well aware, some of them definitely fall into another category and it is always a disappointment when it turns out that way because I enjoy talking with them one on one. I am pleased that you found another use for pieces of the Berlin Wall. That experience in the mens room in Las Vegas was really strange and surreal.

Aussie slang for the day: according to radio announcer near me, what Janowicz did in that tiebreak was “chuck a bit of a tanny.”
Need help translating-does that mean a tantrum?
Sad news. Our Brian Baker injured his knee and had to leave in a wheelchair.

Kathy R.
Dear Keta: Got it in one – we usually say a “tanty” – a “tanny” sounds like someone has confused a “tinny” – slang for a can of beer, or a very small boat. Personally, I think it’s hot enough without thrashing about on a tennis court (crazy people – and that includes the spectators!). Hugs, Kathy R.

SANTA ANITA NOTEBOOK
JANUARY 9, 2013
by John Mucciolo
There was a trio of graded races during the second week of the Santa Anita winter/spring meeting.
San Pasqual S. (G2): Watson, Weitman and Pegram’s COIL (Point Given) capped off his career with a very game head victory for trainer Bob Baffert. The dual Grade 1 star went 1 1/16 miles in 1:42 2/5 beneath Martin Garcia.
Monrovia S. (G2): Jungle Racing LLC et al’s MIZDIRECTION (Mizzen Mast) gradually wore down pacesetter Kindle (Indian Charlie) in proving best by a half-length in this spot under Mike Smith. The Mike Puype trainee, last seen defeating males in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on the downhill course, finished off the about 6 1/2 furlongs in a rapid 1:11 4/5.
Sham S. (G3): Dave Kenny et al’s GOLDENCENTS (Into Mischief) tracked in second to the top of the lane and inched away in the lane under a confident Kevin Krigger to post a 1 1/2-length score in this one. Trained by Doug O’Neill, the sophomore colt finished off one mile on the fast main oval in 1:36 2/5.
Track Stats
From a total of 26 races held at the Arcadia, California racetrack during the past week, favorites won at a 54 percent clip and the top two betting choices combined for 65 percent of the wins. From 17 frays contested on the dirt oval, two animals won in wire-to-wire fashion (12 percent), while none of the nine grassy tussles went all the way on the lead.
Speed was not as favorable as it usually is at this meeting, with only a pair of runners going all the way on the front on the main oval. We’re not ready to say the track was biased, however, as a big number of favorites did come home first, but we’re more accustomed to seeing speed dominate.
It was an all-or-nothing week of sorts, with 14 favorites but just a trio of second choices winning.
Meet Totals
RACES: 80
DIRT: 60
TURF: 20
FAVORITES: 32 (33 percent)
2ND CHOICES: 14 (20 percent)
TURF WIRE: 2 (18 percent)
DIRT WIRE: 12 (23 percent)
HORSES TO WATCH
Friday (1/4)
1ST — The Carla Gaines-trained REGIME (Empire Maker) put in a nice run throughout to be a clear second in what we thought was a very nice debut try for this filly. We’ll tab the four-year-old to graduate next time.
2ND — We were surprised KENICHI (First Samurai) didn’t get claimed out of this dash, in which he rolled home a fine winner in a swift 1:09 3/5. The four-year-old gelding will be very tough next time for trainer Mark Glatt, even with a small rise in class.
Saturday (1/5)
2ND — CABALLO DEL CIELO (Songandaprayer) led through to finally break through in this dash for conditioner Steve Asmussen. The fleet sophomore proved tons the best in this and could be ready to fulfill the promise that he flashed to start his career.
6TH — MAKE US PROUD (Full Mandate) dueled on the lead through fast splits, dispatched of his pace foes turning for home and battled hard to the wire in a strong second-place showing in this spot. The gelded five-year-old will be a player next time if placed with similar.
7TH — ULTIMATE EAGLE (Mizzen Mast) battled gamely once headed in late stretch and should be set for another big performance next time. The Mike Pender pupil has run well in both tries off the long break and appears to really favor this oval.
Sunday (1/6)
7TH — The returning KATE’S EVENT (Event of the Year) was last after the opening half-mile, but got a fast pace to run into and flew home to win going away in this event, his first run since October. The Jerry Hollendorfer trainee is a solid one-run sprint closer who is always a threat with this type.
A Look Ahead
Saturday will play host to the Grade 2, $150,000 San Fernando Stakes, while the Sunday headliner is the Grade 2, $150,000 San Gabriel Stakes.

Santa Anita: Zenyatta sister Eblouissante returns at next level
By Brad Free
Shigeki Kikkawa
Based on a maiden win by more than four lengths, Eblouissante will be strongly favored Thursday.
ARCADIA, Calif. – One other-than, take two.
Eblouissante, Zenyatta’s half-sister and crushing maiden winner in her only start, resumes her career Thursday in a first-level allowance at Santa Anita, one month after she banged her hip on a receiving barn door at Betfair Hollywood Park and scratched 30 minutes out.
“She had a little swelling after she hit her hip, but it went away and she seems fine,” trainer John Shirreffs said. In fact, Eblouissante missed no training after the allowance-race scratch Dec. 15. She returned to the track the next day and worked four times since.
[SANTA ANITA: Get Thursday’s past performances]
Based on a maiden win by more than four lengths (88 Beyer Speed Figure), Eblouissante will be strongly favored Thursday in the 1 1/16-mile race. Meanwhile, Shirreffs and owner-breeder Eric Kronfeld will try to stay realistic with a filly who has raced only once. It is easier said than done.
“It’s a little tough when it is Zenyatta’s sister. You think of all the possibilities,” Shirreffs said. “You have to keep your feet on the ground, right? And the horse has to prove it in the afternoon.”
A 4-year-old by Bernardini, Eblouissante was patiently prepared to make her career debut late in her 3-year-old year, same as Zenyatta.
Racing 1 1/16 miles first out, Eblouissante was rated by Corey Nakatani near the back and guided outside nearing the far turn.
She rallied in the clear, made the lead inside the eighth pole, and pulled away.
Eblouissante beat an ordinary field. Only one of her rivals has run back – fourth-place Belonging returned to finish second against maidens. It is not a knock on Eblouissante, but her competition will get tougher as she moves forward. Shirreffs believes Eblouissante also will improve, now that she knows what racing is all about.
“She had to go through all the steps,” he said. “She had to go over there, get saddled, and run. It’s something you can’t really do in the morning, gaining a piece of experience. She went to the next level of fitness and experience for a racehorse. As they progress, they have to keep better and better.”
Eblouissante faces four rivals Thursday, including Folk Dancer, a 9-for-37 veteran trained by Vladimir Cerin who is the only multiple winner in the field.
“I filled the race for” Eblouissante, Cerin said.
Sure, he did. Folk Dancer, who is entered for a $40,000 claiming price, might not win, but nine wins and $240,042 proves she is no slouch. She also has established form on the Santa Anita dirt track, where she is stabled. Three others in the field also have raced or trained at Santa Anita – Double Ante, Viva Carina, and Pink Blossom.
Eblouissante has never run over a track other than Hollywood.
Shirreffs was asked – does it matter? “Only if you don’t believe she can handle the dirt,” he said.
What does Shirreffs think?
“I think she can handle anything,” he said
Janet Newman
Go Ebby!
Prayers for a safe trip for you and all the horses and of course the jockeys.
Terry Crow
I hope John is right, but as old horse players say, never bet on a horse to do something it has never done before. In this case, a race on dirt.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Obviously there are a lot of things I still don’t understand about racing – can’t the horses “practice” running on dirt if that’s what they will do during a race? I know that would mean a trip over to SA (or some place that has dirt) for Ebby, but in my head that would make a certain amount of sense.
Marty R / Colorado
Sandy,
I’ve wondered the same thing. Have no idea what the logistics would be. There are a lot of horses living and working out at Santa Anita. I would guess they would have first chances to work over others being shuttled in. Just guessing. Would love an explanation from anyone “in the know”.
Terry Crow
Sandy and Marty-What you say makes a lot of sense and is what I would do in that situation. However, a horse typically works out where its stable is located, in this case Hollywood Park. Having a horse travel under any circumstances is usually stressful for the horse. This is why, I am sure, that John wanted Ebby to make her debut at HP and he must have been highly disappointed that she was unable to make her second race there, despite any statements to the contrary.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Hollywood Park’s training track is dirt, so it’s not as if she has never been on the stuff. We’ll all just have to wait and see how she does at SA. Anyway, all dirt tracks are not the same, so horses must adjust whenever they switch tracks.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Sandy,
John Shirreffs does not train that way.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear TC,
I was skeptical, too about her first time on the dirt.
In thinking back, seems to be his style of training.
He sends them out on tracks they are not familar with
and they win. Just a really good connection between
horse and trainer.
Look at Giacamo, can’t seem to find the photo, of John Shirreffs looking
deep into his eyes as he was grazing before the KY Derby. They were
having a “mind meld” and he won. John has such a “gestalt” for his
horses.

Vinery stallions relocating to WinStar Farm
Published January 16, 2013 Horse Racing HL
Vinery Kentucky’s More Than Ready and Congrats head a group of five stallions that have been relocated to WinStar Farm. Kodiak Kowboy, Pure Prize and Street Hero are also headed to WinStar.
Vinery owner Dr. Tom Simon announced in late August that he was putting his North American breeding and training operations up for sale. WinStar had previously acquired former Vinery stallions Pioneerof the Nile and Maimonides for the 2013 breeding season.
“With the announcement of the selling of the farm earlier this year, we knew this day would come,” Vinery CEO Tom Ludt said. “I am proud of what we accomplished with these stallions, and am excited to see them continue their careers at a place like WinStar.”
WinStar is set to open a new stallion barn in February.
“These are exciting times at WinStar, and we’re thrilled to be able to welcome these terrific stallions to the WinStar family as we get set to open the doors on our new state-of-the-art stallion complex,” Elliott Walden, President & CEO of WinStar said in a release. “We’ve already enjoyed overwhelming response from breeders since adding Maimonides and Pioneerof the Nile, and we’re thankful that the shareholders of these five stallions have shown confidence in WinStar too.”

Black Caviar Tops Australian Ratings for 2012
Breednet – Media Release – Tuesday, 15 January 2013
World Racing’s undefeated champion FRANKEL dominated the headlines following the release of the 2012 World Thoroughbred Rankings (WTR) by the International Federation of Horse Authorities in London tonight (AEST).
Frankel, who has been retired to stud and will not race again, topped the listings at 140, the highest rating assigned to a race horse since Dancing Brave was given a mark of 141 in 1986.
Unbeaten Australian champion Black Caviar was assigned a rating of 130 by the WTR Committee and for the third straight year is the Champion Sprinter in the World.
In another remarkable year Black Caviar (pictured) won all six starts, including five at Group 1 level and extended her career winning sequence to 22 after travelling to England and winning the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.
Her rating of 130 was achieved in winning the Group 1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington, where she defeated her great rival Hay List in February. That race has been re-named the Black Caviar Lightning by the Victorian Racing Club and is expected to be Black Caviar’s starting point for her farewell campaign on February 16.

Hello everyone! ♥
For those of you who have yet to know I am pleased to share with you a bit of news. This Thursday, January 17th I will be racing for the second time! I’m entered in the 7th race an Allowance Optional Claiming at Santa Anita Park where I will start on dirt for the very first time. Post position: number five, race length: one and one sixteenth miles, estimated post time: 4:07pm, and my jockey: Corey Nakatani. I am quite excited to be running again and I hope everything will go accordingly on Thursday.
In other news, January twelfth I breezed five furlongs in 1:00.80 at Hollywood Park Race Track. My move was the 6th quickest among 33 horses going the distance.
Thank you for your encouragement and appreciation.
I’ll do my very best on Saturday to be safe and just have some fun!

I think it’s a typo!
Especially Horses / So Cal
As others have mentioned, (and as I just found out) the E Facebook has never been verified as official or sanctioned by any of E’s connections. I don’t think it is maintained with any ill intentions, but it appears to be just a chronological collection of publicly released information on E. The information is then put in transcript to make it appear as if E is the “voice”. In this latest post the phantom writer has mixed up the Saturday workout with the Thursday scheduled race day….most likely the writer meant to say “I’ll do my very best on THURSDAY to be safe and just have some fun!”
Especially Horses / So Cal
BTW….it was Sign who pointed out that one post was almost verbatim from an interview John Sheriffs did after Ebby’s fist race. Our phantom simply took John’s words and ascribed them to Ebby.

Dear All,
The Ghost writer, who writes incorrect information, wrote in the last one posted after her first race, “I was on the muscle”; when in actuality John
Shirreffs SPECIFICALLY STATED THAT SHE WAS NOT ON THE MUSCLE.
Seems this person delight in writing incorrect information. It is very sad
That this is getting posted on Zenny’s site which is supported by The Mosses and Lanes End, who are very credibile and ethical.

Disturbing.

Trina Nagele in SoCal
“In Ireland, it is not in our culture to eat horse meat and therefore, we do not expect to find it in a burger.”
“…one sample of Tesco Everyday Value Beef Burgers showed about 29% horse meat relative to beef content. Authorities said stores in mainland Britain were also affected.”
Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Max. I hope a stop will be put to this.

@ Terry Crow….you are so right about not counting on horses to do what they have never done…which is why got to watch Brown Almighty in the Smarty Jones….he also will be first on dirt
Terry Crow
It is almost heresy to say it but one of E’s opponents on Thursday appears to be a very tough older horse with multiple wins. The wins were probably against claimers, which made this horse eligible for this race. Non-winners of two, depending on the conditions of the race, can include horses with multiple wins. There are some crafty trainers out there who can really read the condition book.

dear max and trina all products containing horse meat in tesco aldi lidl and iceland have been removed from the shelves they were the cheaper brands it was only through the irish authorities that it came to light which does’nt say much for our foods standard agency horse meat is very popular in europe so thats where it most prabably came from it’s banned in britain and ireland makes you think what’s in the food we eat these days so horrible hugs sheena
Max
Sheena. Agree. This must have been very upsetting for you to hear this. Hope like Trina that a stop is put to it. How’s the rain situation?

Wheww! Before I thank all you precious dumplings for Birthday wishes yesterday, I spent all day at doctors office today (groan!) BP up too high, (d*** salt! who discovered it anyway!?) GASP! gained weight again! (er OK, too fat! D*** the caveman for discovering fire and those delicious fatty dinosaurs!)) shortness of breath again! (gasp! just a little) Generally not up to par … But GULP! before a thorough check of heart and trying to find out if I was drowning (uh oohh! shoot me now!) Dum Da DumDum … doc says “Well, if you are filling up with fluids, (here it comes!) you’ll need to be admitted to hospital again” (GASP! NO NOT THAT!) Dum Da DumDum … WHEWWW! Nope – ALL CLEAR! Doc upped BP medicine, must work heart out with the right exercise (not just running to the outhouse and back!) and I have to stay away from dinosaurs! “Whoa” is me!! Dear Karen G,
What a wonderful, humorous post, sooo very KG.
That darn salt will get one everytime, maybe a treadmill at home
on walk when the heat of the California sun beats down on you,
don’t forget “high protein, low fat and sugar”, how boring.
Instead of Skinny Cow ice cream have a Skinny Girl cocktail
and make sure TO ENTER THE SANTA ANITA VIDEO CONTEST.
You are a sure winner.
Glad you had a good? doctor’s visit.

Thank you Sign – lol! More blushes! Tomorrow is another day (that sounds familiar) BUT to the track to see sweet Ebby race and will get exercise running back and forth to paddock and then out front. Plus long walk in and out of track …. NO GOODIES out there! uh uhhh! NoNo mustn’t mustn’t, gottta be good! And no Skinny (sigh!) Girl cocktails! I do not drink and drive!
Thank you all again, I only have you all in my heart when I share videos … I love to give back something which I love to others who give so much of themselves to us all each day. ♥ My heart ♥ does indeed :)

A PSYCHOLOGIST’S OPINION: WHY PEOPLE ANNOUNCE THEY ARE LEAVING A
SOCIAL MEDIA SITE
“It is attention whoring on a massive scale. People do this all the time on Facebook, and then a billion people will comment on the status saying, “Ohhh noes, don’t leave! We love you!” but more often than not they end up keep ing their account anyway. “
Keta
Sign,
Your beautiful morning prayers and thoughts for the day show that you are better than this. I am the only person who has done that-so there seemed to be a
not-to-subtle message in it. Also, it had no relationship to anything else on this page or this area of the Blog It was truly out of the blue.
If i have upset or offended you, I am sorry.
Tomorrow is a new day with all the hope and new beginnings it brings.

Keta, Your graciousness is inspiring! As to what you were replying to, I am speechless.

High hoof, Louise and Max! Well said. Power Up Keta!
Trina Nagele in SoCal
You know, Sign, this is what people call “adding insult to injury.” I believe that some ungracious remarks from you (Keta, correct me here if I am wrong) played a part in driving Keta temporarily (thank goodness, ONLY temporarily) off this site. Now you dare to insult her with the comment about “whoring for attention.” Shame on you, Sign.
Keta
Trina,
You are absolutely right in your observations on why I left.
And, I did find Sign post here extremely offensive and insulting.
Thank you and Louise and Max and all who are so caring and supportive

You are not the Web Masterof this site, pay for this site or have
Been named Web critic. Your comments are very inappropriate.
Trina Nagele in SoCal
Is that really the issue, Sign? If so, how about yourself? When did YOU start paying for this site? When were YOU appointed webmaster? Oh, that’s right–never!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Sign – this kind of “out of the blue” sniping – not to mention the language – is totally unacceptable on this site. You seem to concern yourself a lot with what OTHER people are writing, what about yourself? I see that later on you’ve posted, again, a definition of hostility. This certainly seems to fit the bill, and this is not the place for it.

Not to repeat basically everyone who responded to this, but it is attention whoring on a massive scale. People do this all the time on Facebook, and then a billion people will comment on the status saying, “Ohhh noes, don’t leave! We love you!” [less than sign, three] but more often than not they end up keep ing their account anyway.
