Happy Friday!
Alys recently spent some time with both Zenyatta and her colt. She sent us these photos of Zenyatta getting some attention in her stall and the yearlings enjoying winter weather out in the paddock.
We are also proud that Bloodhorse has named the birth of Zenyatta’s colt the most popular story of 2012. You can see the whole “2012 in Review” newsletter by clicking this link.

So sad to hear of these horses going down. If racing is to attract new young fans, this has to stop. When it happens several times at one track, something is wrong with the track or the vets who are checking out the horses prior to the race.

CIA Director Nominee John O. Brennan Has Ties to Farrier World
Fran Jurga The Hoof Blog Saturday, January 12, 2013
The pubs are buzzing in Ireland tonight. And the forge fires are flaring just a little higher, knowing that half a world away, a son of one of their own may soon take on one of the most important jobs in the world.
When you read about the man chosen by President Obama to replace General Petraeus as director of the CIA, you won’t hear much that makes you think about horses. But back in Ireland, an elderly man has come forward to connect the dots between John O. Brennan and a farrier’s forge on a lavish estate and stud farm in Kilkenny.
It seems that last fall, John Brennan–then a security advisor to the White House–was in Dublin for a meeting and he mentioned that his 92-year-old father was formerly employed in the forge at what is now known as Mount Juliet.

Gentildonna named Japan’s Horse of the Year
by Paulick Report Staff | 01.13.2013 | 9:12am
Japanese super filly Gentildonna, winner of the Fillies’ Triple Crown and the Japan Cup, was named the Japan Racing Association’s Horse of the Year and Best Three-Year-Old Filly Sunday. Gentildonna’s 2013 agenda includes an appearance in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The Deep Impact filly defeated Arc runner-up Orfevre in her Japan Cup victory in November. Orfevre was named Best Older Colt or Horse.
“Thanks to this horse I too had a fantastic year, and this year I hope that she and I can sail the world together,” said regular jockey Yasunari Iwata.

Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association News
ITHA | Breaking News
Quarantine End Message From Hawthorne 1/11/13
Dr. Ernst has lifted the quarantine effective at 6:00 am CST on
Sunday, January 13th. Dr. Ernst has not put any restrictions here
in Illinois, but would encourage anyone shipping to another State,
to confirm acceptance prior to leaving Hawthorne Race Course.
Effective with the lifting of the quarantine, 2 year olds are prohibited
on the backside for a period of 30 days due to their susceptibility to stress.
The ITHA, State vet, and management will review this procedure in 30 days
to determine a date when they would be allowed on site again. We are
doing this as an additional step to help insure we do not have another
virus incident.
If you have any questions please contact Dawn or me.
I want to thank you all for all your hard work and understanding during
this very difficult time.

Some good news among the dreadful stores of deaths: Alcopop has been a really popular horse here and have just found this piece on Skysportsradio:
http://www.skyracing.com.au/index.php?component=news&task=rnewsdetails&Itemid=108&id=23&rid=16746.
Happy retirement Alcopop!
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Thanks for the great news, Kathy R.
So glad Alcopop a $2 million dollar earner is retired healthy, safe and sound.
Many times these breakdown are related to stress on bones and joints
that are not visibly seen; training on these young bodies is very very very
stressful and there is a whole strategy to training the 2 and 3 year olds that
are growing. And resting them is very important. John Shirreffs does it best,
like with Battle Force, he let him grow up and now he is a much better competitor
mentally and physically. Training and racing them hard as 2 and 3 year olds leads
to career ending injuries and breakdowns. So very unfortunat.
Keta

Nice to read that Alcopop might have a second career
“Stephens, who runs a small stable at Victor Harbour in South Australia, flagged the possibility his wife Harriet could introduce Alcopop to dressage and showjumping.”

Eblouissante
Eblouissante, a half sister to 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta who won her first start at 1 1/16 miles by 4 1/4 lengths, is entered in the seventh race Jan. 17 at Santa Anita Park.
Five horses were entered in the 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claiming race for older fillies and mares.
Eric Kronfield’s homebred Eblouissante is trained by John Shirreffs, who directed Zenyatta to 19 victories in her first 19 races before suffering her only defeat in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I).
Eblouissante captured her debut under Corey Nakatani at Betfair Hollywood Park Nov. 16.
“I worked her before I rode her,” said Corey Nakatani, who retains the mount on Eblouissante Thursday. “She’s a special filly.”
Eblouissante was entered in an allowance race at Hollywood Dec. 15 but was scratched about an hour beforehand when she banged her hip on a stall door in the receiving barn and sustained an abrasion.
The daughter of Bernardini out of the Kris S. mare Vertigineux has worked four times over Hollywood’s Cushion Track since that incident. In a five-furlong move Jan. 12, she was clocked in 1:00 4/5, sixth quickest of 33 at the distance.
“Hopefully, she comes back and runs like she did in her first race,” Nakatani said. “I’m sure John has her spot-on, so I’m looking forward to riding her again.”
Entered in the race: Double Ante, Joe Talamo; Viva Carina, Edwin Maldonado; Folk Dancer, Julien Leparoux; Pink Blossom, Alonso Quinonez; and Eblouissante, Nakatani.
