Happy Friday!
Alys recently spent some time with both Zenyatta and her colt. She sent us these photos of Zenyatta getting some attention in her stall and the yearlings enjoying winter weather out in the paddock.
We are also proud that Bloodhorse has named the birth of Zenyatta’s colt the most popular story of 2012. You can see the whole “2012 in Review” newsletter by clicking this link.

On Inauguration Day, words from the Civil War.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord–
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He has loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

Thank you, Trina! It was such a moving ceremony today. From Myrlie Evers-Williams invocation to President Obama’s inspirational speech, it was truly an amazing, historical day. I’m so glad that it fell on MLK Day. How fitting…
Skip Ean
Ever since i saw the Lincoln film, I have been singing this, but have been mangling the words. Thank you for putting me on track, Trina! It was a fairly glorious day, wasn’t it…memorable.

Actually I can’t think of a worse quote.

Keta Note: This is powerful, moving. 2013 is the 50th anniversary of her husband’s death. He was shot & killed on their front lawn.
Trina Nagele in SoCal
How very poignant it is that Myrlie Evers-Williams has the honor today, MLK Day and Inauguration Day, of delivering the Inaugural Invocation, fifty years, as you say, after the murder of her civil-rights leader husband. We have come a long way.

Thanks Keta,
He is a good looking fella!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Do I need to “adjust my color controls?” He looks . . . well . . . brown to me. What is the clue that he is grey?
Max
Sandy. You have to be close up to see gray in most newborns. He looks brown or bay in the photo, but probably has the beginning of gray in his coat and mane and has been identified that way by his breeder.
Trina Nagele in SoCal
Good question, Sandy. And isn’t that a cute photo!
casey
Grey colts are always born dark and lighten with age, but it is a dominant trait, so generally if a grey is mated with a bay, the foal will be dark, but will have some grey hairs around the eyes. It’s weird. Zenyatta has a 50% chance of her foal being grey this time around

Excuse me, but doesn’t the present admin have one of the worst record on the treatment/management of wild horses? Or have I been misinformed on this site?
Keta

I am confused. Cheltenham is a Race Track is in the UK
Have no idea if they have any involvement with wild horses
Maybe Sheena or one of our international experts can answer
That would be quite a concern & I would want to know.

Just so you know, I honestly thought you were talking about my Cheltenham Comment. Your post came immediately after that.
I came back and reread. “admin” must not mean Cheltenham administration.
Yes, there has been much discussion on the Blog on the policies and practices on federal and state levels regarding wild horses. Much needs to be done.
So, I was very confused. And, I apologize.

Trina Nagele in SoCal
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) under Ken Salazar has indeed had a shameful record in the treatment, amounting to planned extermination, of our wild horses, who are being gathered and sent to slaughter. I encourage everyone to follow the blog Straight From the Horse’s Heart for current information on how you can help save our wild horses. Here is news of the recent successful rescue of 41 wild horses put in the slaughter pipeline by the BLM. http://rtfitchauthor.com/tag/humane-society-of-the-united-states/. I was proud to be a part of this rescue. We are hoping and advocating for improved policies under the new BLM director.
Sunny, I took the liberty of reposting your comment and this reply on the new entry “Some New Photos.” I hope you don’t mind.

Dear Trina and Ann:
Very sad situation for the beautiful Wild Ones. Hopefully with a new Director at the BLM things will improve. Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
Trina-You speak the truth. Who is responsible for this policy?
Skip Ean
Oh how i wish we knew who the new person is! Major equine advocates are behind a Congressman who, so far, has declined to run for the job. We know the devil we have, Salazar. We do not know if there will be a new devil. Having met a few other people in the BLM, they share Salazar’s mindset, which threatens every animal that once was free–our horses, our burros, our wolves…and Salazar is retiring to a fat job lobbying for the cattle industry and says he will run for governor of his home state, Colorado. There are so many other blazing topics of interest raging over our country that we have to be loud and strong to get OUR message across to the public and the government. We had better shout our hearts out because the BLM has already crushed the wild populations and reduced them to about 10% of what they were when they ran free for hundreds of years. We have met the enemy, and he is us.
Ann NC
How does one manage a MYTH? The Wild Horse and Burro ACT.
I don’t believe any administration has ever, or will ever get a handle on this….the myth.
