Happy Friday!
Alys recently spent some time with both Zenyatta and her colt. She sent us these photos of Zenyatta getting some attention in her stall and the yearlings enjoying winter weather out in the paddock.
We are also proud that Bloodhorse has named the birth of Zenyatta’s colt the most popular story of 2012. You can see the whole “2012 in Review” newsletter by clicking this link.

A.ZAYAT tweets on Z BIG APPLE injury
The peaks and valleys continues I guess emotional Rollercoaster in this business is very underrated statement. As we were getting a surprise announcement of Paynter and Paynters recovery. Being named Ntra moment of the year. 30 min later I got a phone call from Michael Marlow. Bob Baffert assistant that we have a hiccup or a setback with Z Big Apple.
After his breeze on Tuesday. He came out Wednesday not good.
Bottom line we have done some diagnostics on Wednesday and
it revealed that he has a condylar fracture in the right front leg.
It was non displaced. I authorizes immediately to get him to surgery.
We were so lucky to be able to have his surgery yesterday
we put some screws and plate to support his leg.
His prognosis for racing is excellent.
Should be off for a couple months and will take it from there. #talentedcolt #patience

An excellent article on America’s Best Racing use of media & getting new fans!
Three Chimneys presents Good News Friday: ‘Go Baby Go’ for a New Generation
by Scott Jagow | 01.18.2013 | 12:07pm The Paulick Report
When America’s Best Racing launched last spring, it was met with a mixture of cautious optimism, jaded skepticism, and bewilderment.
After all, it seemed racing had tried everything to create new fans and wedge itself back into the mainstream sports and entertainment consciousness, and more often than not, those efforts had found little traction.
But America’s Best Racing, whatever that might entail, seemed unique from the outset.

Hope MMM wins, he really has a good chance at an Eclipse this year if
all goes well. Maybe he will win the classic, almost in 2012. So hard
for them when they have other horses that are are so good the same
year.
Pulpit had that issue with 49er and a couple of others that were very talented.
He out did them as a sire, though.
Kathy R.
Dear Max: Regarding your post earlier on the 40 degree plus heat at racetracks: the crowds certainly don’t go on days like that – which makes it all the more unacceptable that they persist with the event – midweek racing is not heavily supported – after all, if all you want to do is punt, you can do that from home, or at the local TAB (betting agency). The stewards make the statement that “all care will be taken with the horses on days like this” – that just means they bring them straight to the track without parading, and they double up on things like mist sprays and hosing on their return. But around six horses suffered heat effects in Victoria, and it just looks greedy and I think cruel to inflict those sort of conditions on the horses. And there also is an issue with the jockeys, who have to watch their weight, which also includes fluid intake. Not a good look at all. At least with the shuttle guys, they’re well cared for in the barns at the various stud farms. But it was great to see them all down here this season. Cheers!
Kathy R.
Max: Here’s a piece from Skysportsradio reporting on Gosford – where the race was called off:

Kathy R. 49C as the jockey drove to the track? This is terrible heat for all. You guys need a break and soon. The horses need AC in their stalls with these temperatures. Here’s hoping that you get rain and cool weather.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Kathy R,
So glad they called the meet off. Way too hot to run.
The summers in Texas are pretty treacherous, we
have to make sure to not ride in the sun very long,
make sure our horses drink and rest during their
work.
It is very hard on them during the heat. Hope the
fire situation is at least stabelizing.
Kathy R.
Dear Sign: Saw the nasty situation you folk had in Texas over your summer – I think the sort of vegetation you have is somewhat similar to the scrubby stuff we have here – just explodes when a spark hits it. The fire situation is still very unstable – mainly because the damn wind keeps swirling about. It’s just so scary! Hugs, KathyR.

Dear Max and Z Fans:
Nice article on POE. Should be a real competitive racing season this year.
Learned something I did not know watching a movie today. One of the characters explained how the term “The Big Apple” came to be. It seems that in the ’30’s, racing on the New York circuit was the goal of every horseman. It was racing’s pinnacle. A sportswriter in Mississippi apparently called it taking a bite of “The Big Apple” and thus coined the phrase. Maybe some of you already knew this story. Too cute. Hugs, JB

Dear Keta:
Thank you. I always wondered how that nickname for New York came about.
So many phrases we use every day have connections to horses and racing. Here’s a few: champing at the bit, bits and pieces, dark horse, not by a long shot, right from the horses mouth, they’re off and running, giving someone a leg up, backing the wrong horse….Hugs, JB

Dear Max and Z Fans:
I know. So many of last year’s three year old crop retired.
Papa Charlie is doing great. The bell boots are working and he’s a happy boy. A few things are happening on the farm and Charlie is a little annoyed right now.
Angela and I tried to acquire a mare called Hudson Township that our rescue group was supposed to get along with PC. But she was sold the day before and we tried to purchase her yesterday from the woman who has her. We cannot agree on a price as yet. While we were there, we were given (free) a beautiful six year old mare who is lame. Her name is Summer Wind Gigi. Anglea has found an abscess on her foot; she drained it and is giving her antibiotics. We hope this will do the trick. She seems to be better already. Angela is having the vet check her out.
GG’s sire is Bowman’s Band who earned over $1,300,000.00 in his career. His sire was Dixieland Band. GG herself raced 14 times; 5 wins, 2 seconds and 4 thirds.
Getting back to Charlie. He was an only child until GG came. So as Angela was administering to GG yesterday, Charlie proceeded to pull off Angela’s hat. Holding his head high, she could not reach it. I think he’s jealous. Angela has been trying to divide her time between them so that he doesn’t throw another tantrum. He is quite a character. Will update you on how GG is doing. Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Great story about Charlie and GG. She sounds like a wonderful addition to your little group. Hopefully PC will make friends with her soon. He is a great guy and we all need attention from time to time. Love the hat trick. Get well GG. Glad that you found a good home.

Great son of BIg D! Math in article is interesting
Frank Stonach purchase “He bought 50 percent of him for racing and he’ll take 100 percent of him for breeding and let the Phipps retain a small piece,” Hall of Fame horseman Shug McGaughey confirmed Jan. 18.
100% doesn’t leave much of a small piece-just saying.
Hugs, Keta
Max
Keta. I saw that too. Must be some kind of typo or a new kind of math? LOL!
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Keta and Max:
VERY CORRECT MATH FOR THIS ISSUE
100% for breeding
100 % for racing
The total is 200% for the horse, the math is correct,
Frank Stronach has 100% of breeding rights, which means
he is the only one that can decide on that issue.
He is keeping only 50 % of the racing rights and selling the other
50% in smaller increments.

Really like this horse, he is a great talent.

Aqueduct: CAT scan reveals Dominguez has a skull fracture following Friday spill
By David Grening Daily Racing Form Updated on 01/18/2013 9:29PM
OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Jockey Ramon Dominguez suffered a fractured skull after being involved in a spill during the running of Friday’s seventh race at Aqueduct, according to his agent Steve Rushing. Dominguez remained hospitalized at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition on Friday night.
It was unclear how long he would be hospitalized and when he would be able to ride again. Before the results of a CAT scan revealed the skull fracture, Dominguez had originally been diagnosed with a bruise over his right eye.

BLOODHORSE: THE HERD DYNAMICS AND EMOTIONAL CONFORMATION OF EBLOUISSANTE COMPARED TO ZENYATTA
(great article about herd dynamics in a racing situation, and how the horse
uses it to race – interesting that Zenyatta was able to scope out the whole
field, hone in on the leader and go for them; “E” joins up with the first
horse and takes each one on individually – a more dependent style that
will surely develop. Points made Zenyatta’s racing ability was very unusual
and rare. “E” should be a 9-10 furlong horse – fun to watch her develop)
The herd dynamics and emotional conformation of Eblouissante
18 Jan 2013 10:26 AM 13 Comments

With everyone talking about undefeated Eblouissante’s second career victory, I thought it would be interesting to analyze her from the standpoint of herd dynamics and emotional conformation with help from my friend and cohort Kerry Thomas.
For those not familiar with Kerry, he is the founder of The Thomas Herding Technique (THT), author of Horse Profiling: The Secret to Motivating Equine Athletes, and a pioneering researcher in the fields of equine communication and herd dynamics, among other things. I am THT’s director of equine services. Our company specializes in the study of herd motion (aka a horse race), the minds and emotions of horses, and behavioral genetics.
Kerry emphatically states Zenyatta is the highest level herd dynamic mare he has ever seen, on all levels. So when we talk about how Eblouissante lacks the vision and mental proficiency of her famous half-sister, keep in mind she has nearly impossible shoes to fill.
While no doubt there are some similarities between Zenyatta and Eblouissante, there are vast differences between them when viewed through the lens of emotional conformation herd dynamics. In fact, they are quite different horses.
When Eblouissante bounces out of the gate, she is in the individual dynamic zone. She is immediately looking for another horse to match rhythm with. This is in contrast to Zenyatta, who would break out of the gate in the group dynamic zone and immediately start sizing up the entire herd of motion.
After Eblouissante finds comfort with the nearest horse, she realizes she is in a race. A slight hesitation follows as she transitions to the group dynamic and begins to grasp the bigger picture.
But unlike Zenyatta, Eblouissante relies on the individual dynamic for most of her forward movement. Zenyatta only exerted her individual dynamic when she had to (when she encountered a talented and stubborn foe).
But most of the time, Zenyatta viewed the entire field as a unit to overcome. She could project herself to the lead horses, even when she was a dozen lengths or more behind. Eblouissante has thus far reached the desired destination in both of her starts, but she does it mentally by passing one horse at a time. She is a point-to-point mover.
Eblouissante has been outfitted with blinkers in both of her career starts. Blinkers restrict a horse’s ability to take in the big picture. Throughout both of her races, Eblouissante spends a considerable amount of time trying to recognize what is behind her or to either side.
Her head movements in close proximity situations (when another horse is in her space but she cannot see it) indicate she is using her sense of feel to compensate for her restricted vision. She sometimes is confused in terms of what the other horses are doing, and where they are in her space. The result is a drag on Eblouissante’s point-to-point releases and forward motion.
Watch Eblouissante’s win on Thursday. It is good that she doesn’t go backwards when she is unsure of a situation, but notice she idles at various points of the race because she is concerned with a horse next to her, or wonders if there is one coming from behind. Eblouissante has considerable physical ability, and she moves strongly into space when she can clearly see her targets or when she is confident where she is at. But note how she shows lateral motion almost everytime she passes a horse. It is to her credit as a physical athlete that she can overcome that inefficiency.
Now watch Zenyatta’s amazing debut race. The distance of six furlongs is far too short, and she has never been in a race before, but notice how quickly she grasps the big picture and how seamless her transitions are. When the field turns for home, she is still in traffic. There are seven horses in front of her, but Zenyatta quickly zeroes in on the horse that is leading the front pack. She is unconcerned with the horses in her immediate proximity. That is the sign of a huge herd dynamic and a strong distance focus ability.
I get chills watching Zenyatta. She shows amazingly clear and smooth transitions from her very first race, and absolutely no lateral or compromised motion. She is in complete control of her environment, because she is interpreting everything perfectly. Instead of matching the rhythm of a horse in her immediate circle, she looked to match and surpass the rhythm of the horses way out in front. That allowed her to overcome huge deficits.
Eblouissante is far more affected by the rhythm of the horse that is closest to her. I asked Kerry why horses, in the wild or in a race, look to match rhythm of motion.
“Rhythm is a matter of herd movement, kind of like a flock of birds. Moving in unison with a partner makes you less likely to be an individual target for a predator. That’s instinct, a naturally occurring pattern of motion in all horses. There is comfort to them in mimicking rhythm. High-level horses like Zenyatta can break free of the rhythm of the horses around them and move forward.”
So what lies ahead for Eblouissante? Improvement, for one. Her delayed release points will matter less the further she runs, and Kerry thinks 1 1/16 miles is the low end of her stamina range. He profile is indicative of a sweet spot in the 9-10 furlong range.
Eblouissante is a talented athlete. She has probably run speed figures similar to what Zenyatta ran in her first two starts and has room for considerable improvement in her patterns of motion.
There is no reason she won’t continue to improve. But as she faces higher dynamic horses, her inefficiencies could hurt her. Because she is an individual dynamic, point-to-point mover, she needs to be efficient in her target-and-release skills.
Eblouissante doesn’t have the long-distance, forward focused vision of Zenyatta, or the amazing group dynamic. But few (if any) horses do. Zenyatta had an incredible way of seeing the entire race, knowing what every other horse was doing, and feeding off the herd.
Eblouissante is a graded stakes talent with a bright future, but she has some work to do.

Dear Ann NC
Just caught this link (previous page) you posted and it is TOOO FUNNY, he really was mad going to take a hunk out of that other one. Some people wonder why
horses get hurt and injured in the paddock, this is why and is too funny,
except for the clean up and its cost if injury.
Great find !!!!

Equines do tell it up straight, no fooling around, all out on the table !!!
They are sooo funny when they get mad and do those kind of things.

Dear Kathy R,
Just catching up on your post from January 16, 2013; love the jargon, too.
Reminds me of the time spent today with some Hispanic patients getting
my spanish phrases right. Even jargon in English can be challenging, mate.
Not sure if you watch or have seen Clinton Anderson, he is a horse trainer, who
actually now has a huge ranch in Texas after moving down from Ohio. Love his
accent and phrases, they are so catchy and poignant.
Thanks for sharing.

Dear Terry: We also “warm the set and cool the tinnies” when we are about to watch the footy on telly with our mates.

Dear Sign: I don’t know Clinton Anderson, but I do LOVE American accents – Australian accents don’t have the variety you folk do – some very minor variants, such as South Australians tend to sound more English than Queenslanders. I do remember when we last visited the States stopping off in Atlanta, and we could not understand a lovely young woman who was trying to give us tourist information – seemed really bizarre that someone was speaking English, but may as well have been talking French for all the good it did! Just fascinating how nations develop. Cheers!
