Happy Friday!
Alys recently spent some time with both Zenyatta and her colt. She sent us these photos of Zenyatta getting some attention in her stall and the yearlings enjoying winter weather out in the paddock.
We are also proud that Bloodhorse has named the birth of Zenyatta’s colt the most popular story of 2012. You can see the whole “2012 in Review” newsletter by clicking this link.

Happy Birthday, John Shear!! And thank you again, Trina! Most of us would consider your “job” here to be torture, but it just flows so easily from you!
Way to go EBBY!!! Woo-hoo!! Just watched the recording. They did say she would likely be in a stakes race next. Did you notice how she pranced a bit and then stopped to “address” the crowd? And the cotton balls and shadow roll–too cute. I feel as if I am watching Zenny again. Wouldn’t it be cool if when she retires, she ends up at LE??? I was nervous all day. We may not have seen the Dumplings, but we could hear them!!! Go Dumplings, go!!

Joining you in cheers for EBBY! And thanks, Barbara, for the compliment on John Shear’s birthday poem.

Santa Anita: Eblouissante makes it two straight with facile allowance score
By Steve Andersen
Benoit & Associates
Zenyatta’s little sister Eblouissante, ridden by Corey Nakatani, draws away from Pink Blossom to win the seventh race on Thursday and remain unbeaten.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Eblouissante, a half-sister to Zenyatta, is perfect in two starts after a cozy win in a first-condition optional claimer over 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on Thursday.
The victory is likely to lead to a stakes appearance later at this meeting, with races such as the $200,000 Santa Maria Stakes over 1 1/16 miles on Feb. 16 or the $300,000 Santa Margarita Stakes over 1 1/8 miles on March 16 to be considered, trainer John Shirreffs said.
Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Eblouissante ($3) closed from last in a field of five with a three-wide rally to win the race by 1 3/4 lengths over 22-1 Pink Blossom in 1:44.89. Owned by breeder Eric Kronfeld, Eblouissante made her first start since winning a maiden race at Betfair Hollywood Park on Nov. 16.
Shirreffs said he was delighted with the win in Eblouissante’s first trip to Santa Anita. She is based at Hollywood Park.
“She sat nicely and she moved up nicely,” he said. “She stayed where Corey wanted her. At the end, she picked it up a little bit.
“This was a big day for her. She’d never been on this track and it’s a sandy track.”
A 4-year-old by Bernardini, Eblouissante was scratched from a similar race on Dec. 15 when she struck her hip on a door in the Hollywood Park receiving barn. She resumed training the next day.
Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year, won 19 of 20 starts for owners Jerry and Ann Moss, losing her final race to Blame in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Trained by Shirreffs, Zenyatta won the 2010 Santa Margarita, her 15th win.

YAY EBBY!!!! GO EBBY GO!!!! GIRL POWER!!!! RUN LIKE A GIRL!!!! I’m just a little excited. Raylene Yount called me just before the sixth race to remind me about Ebbys race and then again right afterward. She was at work so she couldn’t go to SA.
Another masterful poem, Trina. Happy birthday SA hero, John Shear.
I was also very happy to learn here that Hollywood Park will be having their 2013 Fall/ Winter racing meet.
It was so great to me to see Mario walking Eblouissante around the walking paddock. I didn’t see the usual back leg wraps on Ebby or Odeon. in the sixth race. I thought they were an automatic thing for John Shirreffs racers to wear. Does anybody have any insight about that?
With Calracing’s coverage, I didn’t see any Dumplingz, but did see Dottie in the winners circle for the photo. Corey N. sure looked happy and I liked the extra little pat he gave Ebby after he dismounted. All in all, it was a feel good day.

Thank you, Marty, and I agree, it was GREAT to see Mario and Dottie with EBBY! (I was watching on TVG.)

Dear Marty R,
Glad you got to see the race. Mr. Kronfeld with “superstitious” and did
not come this time. Dottie and everyone looked so good. She is really getting
to be a talent. That emphatic jump out of the gate was awesome and taking
those long strides one after another. Maybe Frankel would be a good
“mate” for her. A little preplanning.

Eblouissante took care of business in her first race against winners, cruising to an easy 1 ¾-length win as the prohibitive 2-to-5 favorite against a short field of five allowance optional claimers over Santa Anita’s main track.
“She sat nicely when she made her little move, stayed right where Corey (Nakatani) wanted her, and picked it up a little more,” said trainer John Shirreffs. “I thought it was very good.”
This start was delayed by a month after the four-year-old daughter of Bernardini was scratched at Hollywood Park after a minor mishap on her way to the track on race day. She had debuted with an impressive 4 ¼-length maiden a month prior.
With her sister Zenyatta winning 19 straight starts before missing by a nose to close her career when looking for a repeat Breeders’ Cup Classic (Grade 1) title, Eblouissante is the next super star that racing fans are starving for.
Zenyatta made the leap into stakes action in her third career start, winning the El Encino Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, and along with owner E N Kronfeld, Shirreffs will decide if Eblouissante will take a similar route.
When asked if Eblouissante will go through her conditions instead of tackling stakes runners, Shirreffs said, “Not necessarily. We’ll see.”
The $200,000 Santa Maria Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita on February 16 would be the spot should stakes action be the decision.
The longest shot in the field at 22-to-1, Pink Blossom dug in to complete the exacta, while 15-to-1 pace setter Folk Dancer held on for third.
While the final time wasn’t the most impressive with maiden claimers running faster in the following heat, Eblouissante took dirt in her face and still won with ease. Her gallop out was most impressive, as she rolled all the way around to the back stretch way in front.
With the winner’s share of $34,800, her earnings now sit at $61,800 just two starts into her career.

Dear Zenny fans, Dumplings and All,
Dear Lord you have blessed us abundantly.
Please help each one of us who come together
on this site,
Where there are struggles let Your peace come in;
Where there are temptations let Your strength take
over;
Where their are sorrows let Your abiding joy
dwell in us.
Let those who are weak learn to be
strong within themselves, not relying on others
for self-esteem and worth and not using learned family
ways to make their way through the day and life.
Let those who rescue others and who are rescued
have the strength to face their demons, heal
their wounds and follow in your foot steps with
strength and conviction.
Let those who are weak and rely on others for
self-esteem and worth, rely on you and themselves
to complete their day with peace, strength and joy.
Let Zenyatta guide us in our quest for self-esteem,
self-worth and strength to stand alone and not
rely on others, blame others, act against
others for our weaknesses are ours not others.
May we see clearly that it is the dawn of a new
day, a new life and a new start for us.
Amen

BLOODHORSE: EBLOUISSANTE’S SECOND WIN
(JS knows how to treat “V’s” girls, what a very special trainer)
Eblouissante Makes it Two-For-Two
By Steve Haskin, @BH_SHaskin
Updated: Thursday, January 17, 2013 9:09 PM

Eblouissante pulls away in the stretch for her second win.
Eric M. Kronfeld’s Eblouissante has a long way to go to start emulating her big sister Zenyatta, but she showed she’s heading in the right direction Jan. 17 with another authoritative victory, this time against a small, but experienced field in a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claimer (VIDEO) at Santa Anita Park.
Under Corey Nakatani, Eblouissante, trained by John Shirreffs, again demonstrated that big kick on the far turn, evoking images of Zenyatta. Although she had to work a bit to put away a stubborn Pink Blossom, who was making her 12th career start, the daughter of Bernardini –Vertigineux, by Kris S. finally put away her rival and drew clear to win by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:44.89. She galloped out some seven lengths clear of the others in the field of five. This was the first time the near-black 4-year-old filly has run on dirt.
Eblouissante, bred in Kentucky by Kronfeld’s Maverick Productions, is now two-for-two, having broken her maiden by 4 1/4 lengths at Betfair Hollywood Park Nov. 16. She was entered in an allowance race last month, but was a late scratch.
Folk Dancer, the veteran of the group with 37 career starts, went to the front, setting fractions of :24.52 and :48.12, followed by Pink Blossom and Viva Carina, who also was making her dirt debut. Eblouissante, favored at 3-5, broke a step slowly and dropped back last, again much like her sister. When Nakatani pulled the trigger, Eblouissante took off with those same humongous strides and quickly pounced on the leaders nearing the head of the stretch. It was uncanny how much she resembled Zenyatta in stride and style.
“She’s a lot like her dam in a lot of ways, slow out of the gate, big strides,” said trainer John Shirreffs, who also conditioned Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year and winner of her first 19 starts.
Eblouissante pulled on even terms turning for home, but Pink Blossom would not give up without a fight. Nakatani had to go a right-handed whip and Eblouissante finally wore her down and began to ease clear with a final sixteenth in :06.48. Folk Dancer finished third.
“She’s such a big filly,” Nakatani said. “She may look like she breaks slowly but she doesn’t. She actually breaks very well. They ran away from her a little, so I just dropped her steady inside. The plan was to see how she handled the dirt today and she handled it better than we thought she would.”
Although this was far from a strong field, the second- and third-place finishers had made a combined 48 starts, compared to two for Eblouissante.
Kronfeld did not attend the race.
“No, he’s not here,” Shirreffs said. “He wanted to stay home. He’s a little superstitious.”
Shirreffs said he was satisfield with Eblouissante’s effort.
“She sat nicely. She moved up nicely. She stayed right where Corey wanted her, and at the end picked it up a little more. It was very good.”
Shirreffs said he would discuss the filly’s next start with her owner.

Forestry , sire of 2012 Eclipse Award finalist Shackleford in the male sprint category, will shuttle to Claudio Pizarro’s Haras El Catorce in Peru for the Southern Hemisphere breeding season. He stands at the Taylor family’s Taylor Made Stallions near Nicholasville, Ky.
His 2013 fee at Taylor Made is $8,000.
“We felt it was a good farm for him to stand at,” said Ben Taylor, vice president of stallions.
Forestry, a 17-year-old son of Storm Cat out of the grade I-winning Pleasant Colony mare Shared Interest, has sired 44 stakes winners and the earners of more than $39.3 million, of which more than $4.5 million came in 2012.
Shackleford, winner of the 2011 Preakness Stakes (gr. I), won four grade I or grade II stakes in 2012 including the Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I) and the Clark Handicap (gr. I).

DAILY RACING FORUM – MMM AND RON THE GREEK IN THE SUNSHINE MILLIONS
THIS WEEKEND
(GO GO GO MMM)
01/16/2013 4:51PM
Gulfstream Park: Mucho Macho Man, Ron the Greek top attractions in Sunshine Millions
By Mike Welsch
Barbara D. Livingston
Mucho Macho Man and Ron the Greek (above), the one-two finishers last year, are rematched in the Sunshine Millions Classic.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Mucho Macho Man, runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Classic to close out his outstanding 2012 campaign, will be the marquee name on Saturday’s Florida Sunshine Millions program at Gulfstream Park.
Mucho Macho Man will be back to defend his title in the $400,000 Sunshine Millions Classic, the richest of six stakes restricted to Florida-breds on Saturday’s 11-race card. He’ll take on a group that includes Ron the Greek, runner-up in the 2012 Sunshine Millions Classic, and the Grade 1-placed Fort Loudon. Mucho Macho Man will be equipped with blinkers for the Classic, the first time he has worn them since finishing fourth in the Grade 3 Holy Bull here two years earlier.
Mucho Macho Man will receive a two-pound weight concession from Ron the Greek under the allowance conditions of the nine-furlong Classic. Ron the Greek carries top weight of 123 pounds as a result of his victory in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster last spring at Churchill Downs.
Other prominent names on the Sunshine Millions card include Grade 1 winner Emma’s Encore in the $150,000 Filly and Mare Sprint; Romacaca in the $150,000 Filly and Mare turf; Bahamian Squall in the $150,000 Sprint; as well as Doubles Partner and Teaks North in the $150,000 Turf.
Successful Song and My Pal Chrissy, first and third here last month in the Ocala Stakes, top a field of seven entered for the $300,000 Distaff.
The first two finishers from last year’s Filly and Mare Turf, Hooh Why and Romacaca, will also hook up in a rematch on Saturday. Romacaca already avenged that setback when capturing the South Beach Stakes here earlier in the meeting with Hooh Why finishing a game third.
“She’s doing very well, she’s strong, has been training excellent and worked good the other day,” said Danny Miller, who trains Romacaca for owner Frank Calabrese. “She’s coming into the race great.”
Among the five others who will try the Filly and Mare Turf is Regalo Mia, whose promising career was interrupted last summer when she contracted pneumonia while in California to compete in the American Oaks. Regalo Mia, who was beaten a nose and a neck in graded stakes prior to her illness, has started twice since returning to action this fall, most recently finishing ninth in the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere at Churchill Downs.
“I honestly can’t explain her performance in Kentucky,” said Michelle Nihei, who trains Regalo Mia. “She was training well up into that race. But we’ve kind of gotten her back on track since getting her down to Florida and there’s no question who we’ve got to beat on Saturday, definitely Romacaca.”
A full field of 12 was drawn for the six-furlong Sprint, topped by Bahamian Squall, who will break from post 8 under the red-hot Luis Saez. Bahamian Squall scored a convincing 3 1/2-length victory under Saez in the Sunshine State Stakes here on Dec. 2. Close It Out, who ran down Bahamian Squall to upset Calder’s Jack Dudley Sprint Handicap, and Little Drama, fifth as the even-money favorite in the Sunshine State, are among the other key contenders in the Sprint.
Emma’s Encore, winner of the Grade 1 Prioress last summer at Saratoga, makes her first start in the Filly and Mare Sprint since finishing far back in Keeneland’s Grade 2 TCA Stakes on Oct. 6. The speed-packed lineup also includes R Holiday Mood and Honey Chile.
The multiple Grade 1 winner Teaks North will race in the name of trainer Michelle Nevin in the Turf after finishing ninth when returning from an 11th-month layoff for Rick Dutrow in the El Prado here on Dec. 22. Teaks North has not won a race since capturing Monmouth Park’s Grade 1 United Nations in July 2011.
The multiple Grade 1-placed Doubles Partner has come back east after finishing third behind Data Link in Hollywood Park’s Grade 1 Citation Handicap in his 2012 finale.

Black Caviar will make her first public appearance since her victory in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last June at her home track, Caulfield, on Feb. 2.
The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC), in conjunction with connections of the world’s greatest race mare and sprinter, confirmed Jan. 17 that Black Caviar will gallop in between races at the Club’s National Jockeys’ Trust race day.
MRC Chief Executive, Alasdair Robertson, expressed his delight at the prospect of welcoming Caulfield’s first lady back to the track for her final campaign, at her home course.
“We are so pleased to give the public of Melbourne the opportunity to come and see Black Caviar as she prepares to embark upon her final campaign,” Mr Robertson said.
“Caulfield has been Black Caviar’s home for four years, and was the scene of her first black type win. It is most fitting that she be welcomed back to the turf from her memorable victory at Ascot, at Caulfield.”

UK snow: weather conditions live
From The Telegraph
Much of Britain is brought to a standstill today by a snowstorm expected to last 40 hours. Follow all the latest weather and travel updates live.

Keta. Thanks for this information. Very difficult situation for Britain because they are not really equipped to deal with that much snow. When I lived there, we once had a light dusting, but that was it. Hoping for a quick thaw. Thinking of you, Sheena, and Frankel. Bullet Train must be a happy horse to be in Kentucky.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
@Kathy R.–you have my real sympathy for the weather you are undergoing. We have had heat like that here, so I feel your pain. Too, as I get older, I think I feel the heat/cold more, and that doesn’t help.
Kathy R.
Dear Barbara: Thanks for that – it’s certainly true that getting older seems to affect the ability to deal with heat/cold in the extreme – so glad that Mum is cool and safe at this time. Hugs, KathyR.
sheena.davies(wales)
dear max and keta thank you for your concern and prayers in carmarthen we’ve got off lightly so far just a light dusting the eastern half of the country has been hit quite hard you are quite right max we dont deal well with this kind of weather in britain hope kauto and frankel are snug and warm in their stables thinking of kathy in that dreadful heat hugs sheena
Max
Sheena. Glad to hear that you are okay. Yes, all the best to Kauto, Denman, Weird Al and all other British horses facing the snow.
KathyR. I really hate any heat, but into the range of 40C is beyond incredible. Hoping for rain and cool weather for you, Ms Nelly and Ortensia. Training in that weather cannot be any fun, as in impossible.
Kathy R.
Dear Max and Sheena: I was horrified to hear that they were still racing (pacers, mainly) in several parts of the country when the temperatures were nudging the 40 degree mark – absolute stupidity for everyone involved I think. Thankfully no serious affects to horses, but several have been heat affected and withdrawn during the race. Just unnecessary to push them in those conditions. Think I was born in the wrong country – prefer the cold! Although, Sheena, I don’t think I’d cope very well with the sort of stuff nature throws at you! Take care. Hugs, KathyR.
Max
Kathy R. I cannot really understand how a horse can run a race in that kind of heat. They have been known to close tracks here when the temperatures are in the mid to high 90 degree range (30C+), especially when it is very humid. Do people go out to the tracks in Australia when it’s 40 C? I am glad that the US shuttle horses are back home with heat like that. Nelly will not be wearing her trademark suit any time soon.

Sheena
Such good news to hear that you missed the brunt of this storm.
Weather news said it was to keep going for 40 hours or so.
Australia is going through terrible times–heat, fires-threats to people & animals.
Hope that Kathy R’s Mum is okay. Excessive heat can be very hard on the elderly.
May the rains & cooling winds come soon!
Hugs,
Keta

Dear Keta,
Kathy already posted her concens above.
Thanks for the repost of her concerns.
Kathy R.
Dear Keta: Thanks for the concern regarding Mum – she’s is a lovely air-conditioned building – and safe from bush fires which is a great relief to us family! Think I need Sign’s Raindance blokes down here again – for about a month. Hugs, KathyR.

p.s. I have a suggestion to save “pages” – would everyone PLEASE just share the link and not copy and paste the whole article?? We can open a link… thanks! ;-)
Keta
Judy,
Great idea! I will do my best to post only links with minimum of words.to describe it. Links alone do not tell the reader what is in them.
As you know, many of my posts are from Twitter.
There is no link since Twitter is made up of individual messages (tweets)
So, there are times when I have to put these together to make any sense.
I am sure that you & others have noticed that there are many times I post stories which seem to be like another person’s story. The reason I have posted the story is there is new information in it. And, since most writers use the same info in the headline (horses, jockeys, trainers, races), it may appear that it is the same even when it is different. I actually do take the time to scan the Blog to see what hss been already put on it before I post.
So, Judy, I will try and do better.
I do worry that if the Mosses, or Dottie, or the Web Master (or whoever reads or monitors) becomes concerned that the Blog is not the caring place they created , they will decide to shut it down. Zenyatta has moved on in her life. There is no need on their part to do day-to-day communication. We are their guests-and guests of all ages including young people like our Pati. What we say and how we say it and the language we use are all very important.
Any day, at any time, we could log on to a Good-by screen.
I remember all to well how Dottie’s Daily Dairy so quickly disappeared.

Dear JAG,
Thanks so much for sharing the link from the LA times.
So glad you had sooo much fun. Looking forward to KG
video. KG is it on Youtube yet??
KG hope your exercise went well, what a great way to exercise.
We used to share the link and someone started posting
articles in their entirity so that changed. Agree with you,
links take up less space and ONLY ONCE SHOULD
A LINK BE POSTED, unless it is an actual oversight and
the person does acknowledge it.
When reviewing a series of videos articles only the best
and most information should be posted as well. No sense to
take up space with multiple videos of the same thing.
THANKS JAG, FOR EXPRESSING YOUR CONCERN, I ECHO IT.

PS.
Also, people were posting links and then someone else would post the same
article in it’s entirety. Too much repetition takes up space as we..
