Happy Friday!
Alys recently spent some time with both Zenyatta and her colt. She sent us these photos of Zenyatta getting some attention in her stall and the yearlings enjoying winter weather out in the paddock.
We are also proud that Bloodhorse has named the birth of Zenyatta’s colt the most popular story of 2012. You can see the whole “2012 in Review” newsletter by clicking this link.

Trina,
This is an answered prayers moment.
Excerpt from the article says:
“The seven-week Hollywood fall meet runs from Nov. 6 to Dec. 22.
At this point, neither Los Alamitos, in Orange County, or Fairplex Park, in eastern Los Angeles County, have stepped forward with an expansion plan as an alternative to Hollywood.
Lou Raffetto Jr., president of the Thoroughbred Owners of California, told the CHRB talks leading to a viable racing and training site are continuing”

HAPPY BIRTHDAYS TODAY!!

Happy Birthday John Shear, 92 today, working at @santaanitapark today.
And, to Betty White–a very special 91st birthday!
Max
Keta. John Shear is a hero. He saved a kid’s life at Santa Anita at risk to his own from a runaway horse and ended up in the hospital for months. It is always good to hear that he is still working. Happy Birthday to him, and also to Betty White.

A Birthday Poem for John Shear
(January 17, 2013)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us today recollect
The heroics of John Shear
Who in March of the year
2011
A little girl did protect
(Thanks be to heaven!)
From a grave danger none did expect:
That day
A horse
Suddenly broke away
Before entering the course
And came blindly charging her way.
Without fear
John Shear
Moved in front
Her to shield,
And when the horse didn’t yield,
John took the full brunt
And was hurled
To the ground.
That brave paddock guard
Was hit so hard
Many bones were broken to shards,
And internal bleeding was found
That threatened his life.
Blessedly since that date
John has been able to fully recuperate.
Though his wife
Wished he would retire,
It was his desire
At Santa Anita to be
When the horses again
Would race for the wire.
And then
On opening day
For 2012’s winter meet,
He was in fact
On duty once more
At the paddock gate,
And I among many had the great honor
Him there to greet!
We’ll not forget his selfless act!
To our hero John Shear
We want to say happy birthday,
And we pray
You’ll have a marvelous year!
And now let’s all cheer
The brave John Shear!
Hear! Hear!
Max
He is a very brave and kind man.
How about a poem for Santa Anita’s Eddie the Footman,
Dear Laura J,
He is a gorgeous pony, they look great together.
Looked like she took the dirt better than Z, of course Z was behind
about 20 very fast boys, not much of a comparison yet.
She was sooo dirty, but looked very happy.
Beautiful contrast to the dark Princess. I also love the flashy ponies, and Lava Man, who is in a class by himself.
Dear Max,
Thought “E” pony looked a little like Lava Man, dark with white on nose and
maybe lower head. A really nice pair. She is a little tempermental so this
OMG I’m so behind on the posts. Have been having medical tests done, so far so good.
Ebby you are just stunning!! What a great race, and shades of Zenny she makes a big come from behind move to win by 2+ lengths. She so much reminds me of Zen its really uncanny, the standing and looking around with her head up, and that beautiful big body. She really has a regal and elegant appearance, the only thing missing is the dancing. Could we possibly have another one!!!!
Sending my late, great birthday wishes to Karen G. so sorry I missed your special day but I hope it was a great one. Can’t wait to see what’s next for our Princess. Hugs
Thanks Laura. I just saw where you were saying that Hollywood Park’s training track is dirt. Is the “training track” different from the one they run the races on? I guess I don’t understand what synthetic or polytrack is (as became painfully obvious when I was trying to explain it to someone else). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Trina Nagele in SoCal
The little track out past Zenyatta’s grazing green behind Barn 55 at HP is the “training track.” Horses do also train on the main track. At the risk of angering Sign, this seems to be a nice overview of synthetic surfaces. Subject to review by others:
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Trina,
Wikiepdia is an adequate reference for some things.
It is not a credible reference for others. One needs to
deliniate appropriateness.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Trina,
The missing piece is “critical thinking” what is right and correct for
what is being said. Using a medium that provides incorrect, fraudulent
information about persons that run this site is the issue.
And it seems you also are unfamiliar with dealing with issues versus projecting your anger on others, constant rescuing and speaking
for others.
It is not appreciated by those with healthy boundaries,
sense of self, self esteem and self worth.
Adults are responsible for speaking for themselves if they chose
to use emotional black mail and withdrawal to be popular that is
their issue not anyone else. They withdraw and announce it because of
their issues no one elses.
Dear Sandy,
Actually, the training track at Hollywood park that is visible in “E” and “Z”‘s works/
gallops is the dirt training track. The actual race track is synthetic or poly track
like a “tire” only a different medium.
