Dear Zenny Fans, Dumplings and All,
Heavenly Father,
The day after Christmas may feel quite different to different people,
For some of us, it was the “greatest” Christmas ever, as we gathered
with those whom we have caring relationships , were given thoughtful
gifts, and experienced profound gratitude for the gift of your Son, Jesus.
For others, it may have been a difficult day.
For still others, it was a first Christmas with an empty chair where a loved
one used to sit, or a day by ourselves.
Lord, we pray today that for all of us we abound in friendship, joy and strength
in the holiday season and new year with your grace and delight.
Amen
Blessings to all in the holiday season and new year !!!!
Celeste_in_TX
What a nice thing to do so, Sign, saying prayers for all of us the day after Christmas. Your words definitely ring true. For my family it was a strange Christmas indeed, with my husband still in the hospital. He is out of ICU, but still not ready to come home. He thinks he is but he is too weak and still having breathing problems. All the kids came up at one time or another and at one point we were all there at the same time, so even though it wasn’t a *normal* Christmas, at least we were together! My heart goes out to those whose Christmas celebration was less than desired and you are so kind to remind us to think of others.

Dear Celeste. Prayers and good thoughts for your husband and you. God bless you both.

Dear Celeste,
I’m so sorry about your husband being in the hospital (I fear I missed an earlier post). I’m glad he’s graduated out of ICU and hope he will be strong enough to return home soon. Glad your kids were there, and please know that we’re thinking of you when you need a little boost.

A very Merry Christmas to you Darlene and a warm home and car.
It was so cold yesterday. I went to the dog park and saw a man in
shorts and a T-shirt. He said he just got back from a trip to Northern
Greece and his mother still lives in England so the weather was
“Mild to him” as I was freezing in my Christmas sweater.

Dear Judy B,
I was thinking of you on Christmas with your family and hope some very
fond memories were shared and maybe a joke or two that were Russ’s
favorites. You must be having some snow and windy weather in RI as
well. Hope you and Lola Mae are warm and PC is bedded down in his
warm barn and running like the wind in the cool weather.

Dear Sign:
Thank you for your kindness.
It was very difficult to get through Christmas dinner, but we all have our memories to hold on to. I really feel Russ is with me, helping me to adjust and cope. I miss him.
We’ve just had rain here so far, but they are forecasting snow for the weekend. Don’t know how much accumulation is expected yet.
Yes, Lola Mae is warm and cozy and Charlie is as well. Love and Hugs, JB

IN THE SIR BEAUFORT
(Mr Commons won this race last year)
GO GO GO Battle Force !!!

Santa Anita: With a race under his belt, Battle Force ready for Sir Beaufort
By Jay Privman
ARCADIA, Calif. – It took nearly a year to get Battle Force back to the races, but it appears the wait was worth it, because he comes into Santa Anita fresh, potentially primed for a breakout meeting, with the first chance to shine coming Wednesday in the Grade 2, $150,000 Sir Beaufort, part of a stakes tripleheader on the opening-day card.
The Sir Beaufort, for 3-year-olds at one mile on turf, was won last year by Mr. Commons. His trainer, John Shirreffs, and jockey, Mike Smith, team anew with Battle Force.
Battle Force raced three times at age 2, concluding with a third-place finish as the favorite in the Generous Stakes. But he did not race again for 356 days, when he was second in a first-level allowance at Betfair Hollywood Park on Nov. 17. That race was rained off the turf to the main track. Battle Force returns to his preferred surface on Wednesday, and, judging by his progress from his debut to his second start in 2011, figures to move forward.
“I was very happy with the way he ran,” Shirreffs said Friday, not long after Battle Force drew post 7 in a field of eight. “It was a tough race. He came home well. I think he’s coming into the Sir Beaufort very well.”
Shirreffs said there was nothing specifically wrong with Battle Force that caused the lengthy layoff. “We just gave him time hoping it would help him,” he said.
Did it?
“If you don’t give them time, you’ll never answer the question,” he said.
Big Bane Theory and Smart Ellis are in a softer spot after competing in the Hollywood Derby last time out. Big Bane Theory, who finished ninth of 14 in that race, beat a first-level allowance field on the Santa Anita turf in his previous start.
Smart Ellis has had nightmarish trips in two of his last three starts, including the Del Mar Derby. He was a good third behind Grandeur and Speaking of Which in the Twilight Derby over this course on Nov. 2.
The lightly raced Silentio also has some upside. After winning his first two starts, he was third in a second-level allowance against older runners here on Oct. 12.
Midnight Crooner won two straight on turf before finishing ninth of 10 in the Del Mar Derby on Sept. 2. Unraced since then, he returns with Martin Garcia having replaced Rafael Bejarano, who wound up on Silentio.
Garrett Gomez, who had ridden Silentio in all three of his starts, is on Conspiracy, who was third in a first-level allowance on dirt at Aqueduct last time. He is winless in two grass races.
Press Baron finished furiously for third behind Big Bane Theory in an allowance race here Nov. 2.
Fit to Rule scored a front-running win against maidens in his sixth start last time out. This will be his first race on grass.

Hi all,
Just trying to catch up so I hope you all had a wonderful, blessed Christmas or Holiday. I MADE OUT GREAT!! Had been dropping hints to hubby about new items on Zee’s site, even got specific about which one I liked best. I checked the checkbook on Friday and there was no check written or deduction so I figured he didn’t get the message. Well, I dropped my teeth (just an expression) when I opened the last gift under the tree and it was the neat vest with a carricature of Zee and Mike!! It is so soft and nice I just love it. He had my daughter order it so I wouldn’t know, Ha, Ha, first time he’s tricked me in 25 years.
Sign, I would like to thank you for the lovely prayers you have been posting, they truly are inspirational and very touching. Hope they helped to ease the hearts of those who spent their first Christmas without a loved one.
Celeste, praying for your hubby to come home soon, if I remember right he has COPD and my husband suffers with the same thing so I know what your going thru.
I can’t wait to see Take Charge Indy run in the Donn Hndcp coming up shortly, I hope he has a fabulous year and stays healthy.

Grade I Winner Paynter Set to Rejoin Baffert
By Claire Novak, The Blood-Horse
Updated: Wednesday, December 26, 2012 6:40 PM
Owner Ahmed Zayat confirmed Dec. 26 that his Haskell Invitational (gr. I) winner Paynter will ship Dec. 29 from Fair Hill Equine Therapy Center near Elkton, Md., to Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert’s California barn.
The 3-year-old son of Awesome Again has been recovering in Maryland from surgery undergone Oct. 3 at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center of Veterinary Medicine to remove an abscessed area of his colon.
The abscess was discovered when Paynter, who won the Haskell after running second to Union Rags in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), developed an illness that landed him first in a New Jersey clinic, then at the Upstate Equine Medical Center in New York.
According to Zayat, the colt will be on a direct flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport. Zayat said he and his family will greet Paynter upon his arrival.
Zayat and his son Justin kept fans informed about Paynter’s progress via their respective Twitter accounts, @jazz3162 and @justinzayat. His recovery story earned Paynter the 2012 Secretariat Vox Populi Award in a vote of fans announced by Penny Chenery Dec. 26.
Paynter was a late addition to the list of Vox Populi nominees, after fans objected when he was missing from the first round selected by judges. The other nominees for the award, which will be presented at Santa Anita Park Dec. 29, are Frankel, I’ll Have Another , Royal Delta, Shackleford , Shanghai Bobby, and Wise Dan.
Paynter also garnered a nomination for the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s “Moment of the Year” fan poll, open until Jan. 2.

Havre de Grace to Tapit for first mating; Plum Pretty to Distorted Humor
By Joe Nevills
Barbara D. Livingston
Reigning Horse of the Year Havre de Grace will visit the court of Tapit in 2013.
Reigning Horse of the Year Havre de Grace will be sent to Tapit for her initial mating in 2013, while 2011 Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty will be bred to Distorted Humor.
The two high-profile mares made headlines in early November when they were purchased for a combined $14.2 million by Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm in the span of 24 hours at the fall mixed sales. They now reside in the same paddock at Wayne and Cathy Sweezey’s Timber Town Stable in Lexington, Ky.
Havre de Grace, a 5-year-old mare from the only crop of Saint Liam, set the record for the highest price for a broodmare prospect sold at public auction when Pope bought her $10 million at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale. Havre de Grace won nine of 16 starts for earnings of $2,586,175, highlighted by wins in the 2011 Woodward Stakes, Apple Blossom Handicap, and Beldame Invitational.
“We did the genetic research on this end, and Tapit is the best cross for her,” Wayne Sweezey said. “I’m pumped. We’ve had a number of Tapits born on the farm, so it’s not new to be breeding to Tapit, and to take that kind of mare to that kind of stallion is great.”
Tapit stands at Gainesway Farm in Lexington for an advertised fee of $125,000, co-second-highest stud fee in North America for 2013. The 11-year-old son of Pulpit has sired 2-year-old champions Stardom Bound and Hansen.
Tapit is fourth among North American sires by earnings, with $9,145,915. He is tied for the most Grade or Group 1 winners in 2012 with four, including Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Tapizar, Japanese February Stakes winner Testa Matta, Gazelle Stakes winner Dance Card, and multiple Grade 1 winner Tapitsfly.
From five crops of racing age, Tapit has sired 284 winners, 20 of them in graded or group company, and progeny earnings of more than $38.9 million.
Havre de Grace will be the second female Horse of the Year to be bred to Tapit in as many years, following 2010 Horse of the year Zenyatta.
In choosing a mate for Havre de Grace, Sweezey said that keeping the mare close to home was a deciding factor in Pope’s decision.
“Having a mare like Havre de Grace in her broodmare band, she is looking forward to trying to make money with the horse and maybe even racing a few out of her, and having that ilk of genetics,” he said. “Really, she understands that the chances of making that kind of money back are slim. With that being said, when I presented [Irish-based] Galileo to her, we talked about it at length, and she came back and said, ‘You know, it makes perfect sense from a business standpoint, but for me, I want to be able to come to the farm and pet my mare that I paid $10-million for, and I want to feed her carrots and watch her babies be born. That’s why I’m in this game, because I really love the horses.’ I think it’s really cool.”
In DRF Breeding’s online poll of potential mates for Havre de Grace that was first published on December 20, voters chose Frankel as the best mate for her. Through voting on December 25, the voting was as follows: Frankel: 18.9%; Bernardini, 15.8%; Medaglia d’Oro, 12.7%; Tapit, 10.7%; Galileo, 10.4%; Tiznow, 10.1%; Malibu Moon, 8.7%; Giant’s Causeway, 7.5%; and Distorted Humor, 5.2%.
Pope purchased Plum Pretty, a 4-year-old Medaglia d’Oro filly, for $4.2 million at the first session of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale. The filly won five of 12 starts, including the 2012 Apple Blossom Handicap, and earned $1,688,746.
Distorted Humor stands at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky., for a fee of $100,000. He was the leading North American sire by earnings in 2011, and is the sire of dual classic winner Funny Cide, Belmont Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Drosselmeyer, and Travers Stakes winner Flower Alley.
“They are a lovely match physically, but more importantly, successful racehorses bred to Distorted Humor have significant infusion of La Troienne on the sire and dam’s side,” Sweezey said. “This cross does that.”
A 19-year-old son of Forty Niner, Distorted Humor has sired 687 winners, including 45 graded stakes winners, from 11 crops of racing age and progeny earnings of more than $92.5-million.

Very interesting views. I think that she’s right and is doing what is best for her horses.
Janet Newman
So if HDG had gone to Galileo I take it she would have to have her
foal over there as well?
Max
Janet. Usually a mare would only stay in Ireland until the pregnancy has taken, about 60 days, and then would go home to foal. That is how it is handled when Kind (Frankel’s mother) visits Galileo. Frankel’s breeding took place at Coolmore in Ireland, but he was foaled in England. Kind is currently in foal again to Galileo. The foal will be born in England and will be a full brother or sister to Frankel and Noble Mission, and three quarters to Bullet Train.

Dear Janet,
Sounds like from Mandy Pope’s comment that they might have
left her over there to foal to be safe. Having these broodmares
travel pregnant, with a new foal is very scary to me, guess
they must have humans accompany them.
Max
Sign. That is indeed a long time for a mare to be away, and then after a year away you would also have a foal to transport. The logistics can be complex. However, EP Taylor shipped his pregnant mare, Lady Angela, from England to Canada. They had problems unloading her and the foal who was with her, when someone tried to separate her from her foal, but fortunately it turned out okay. The foal born after that trip was Nearctic, sire of Northern Dancer.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Max,
Sounds like traveling and breeding can be difficult. It is very hard maybe
impossible to separate a mare from a young foal. They have such a
protective instinct from the wild.
So glad things turned out well for Nearctic or we might not
have had Norther Dancer !!!
I am sure breeders ship their “stock” around the world for
breeding, just like the stallions ship all over to breed and there
must be a “nack” to it. And more concern is probably a thing for the inexperienced in doing this sort of thing.
Max
Sign. I agree with you that Mandy is doing the right thing for her horses. If I were her, I would want both HDG and Plum nearby. The chosen stallions are world class sires. Staying home is a good idea.

Although not an official dumpling am I, but did go to opening day at SA today which turned out to be weather perfect and from what I heard the wagering was way up from last year. Lots of fun and lots of young people were out; touching moment when an announcement was made for a moment of silence for Jack Klugman who was described as a big racing fan who always had a program in hand – we’ll miss him!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
AJ–of course you are! All it takes to qualify as a Dumpling is to love Zenny and her connections.
AJ from CA
Then a “Dumpling” I am and proud to be one at that!
HeidiK Vallejo, Ca
AJ, welcome to Dumplinghood! Glad you had fun at SA today! It looked beautiful. Next time you go, look for Fellow Dumplings. Just follow the signs, and you’ll find ’em. :)

Carolinarkansas–thank you so much for checking in with us. What a mess. I am freezing down here in TX, and we have heat and lights and hot water!
Congrats, Paynter!
Magna Fortuna–I’m keeping an eye on you too. It would be marvelous if you turned out to be a star, but we would love you anyway, even if you don’t.
To all: Correct me if I’m wrong, but does it seem to anyone else that a stallion becomes “fashionable” after he makes a visit to our Z.? I see now that HDG is going to Tapit, and there seemed to be a flurry of activity for Bernie after Z. visited him. Just coincidence?
Midwest/Eastern Dumplings–please check in when you can and let us hear from you that you are ok ASAP. Hugs.
Kathy R.
Dear Barbara: I know it’s not possible, and maybe they wouldn’t work, but would love to see my favourite wild child So You Think court our beautiful Zenyatta!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Storm not quite as bad as predicted here (less wind) but bad enough. Still have power (and thus, heat), but the SNOW . . . . If my guy doesn’t come to shovel, I won’t get out til the spring thaw!
Kathy R.
Dear Sandy: Hope your snowman turns up soon – have been reading about the storms on the New York Times – very nasty. My sister has a thing about snow being romantic. I’ve told her to check out the Times website and see just how “romantic” it is! Take care.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
There you are! Glad to hear you are up and running, electricity-wise, that is. Hugs.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Dear Sandy,
Very vividly remember one winter, snowed in for 4 days,
no heat. Huddled up under a number of blankets, unable to
get to work or shovel the snow, over 6 feet.
So glad you have power and heat.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
I was wondering that too, Barbara, about what’s “fashionable” in breeding. But I have assumed that’s just “buzz”, and that actually, it must be a lot more scientific than that, from bits & pieces I’ve read.
Trina Nagele in SoCal
I’m so sorry the storm hit you so bad, Carol. Thanks for mentioning Magna Fortuna,
the colt who was rescued in utero when his mom was rescued from a feedlot. Good luck, Fortuna!

Dear Keta: Am still curious about where Americain will stand in Australia, and found this story:
http://www.afr.com/p/lifestyle/sport/plans_to_breed_local_stayer_Kqjic2tHI8wpgQA7XjreLM.
His owners (sorry, part owners) have property near Melbourne: am wondering if they intend to stand him privately (if that’s the right word I want). Not being a big reader of the Financial Review, had not thought of looking there for information.

Wonderful video, so glad to see Rightful Image,
and more of Santa Anita.
Thanks for posting this video.

Karen,
Thanks so much for the great video. So glad you were able to get in for opening day, much better than last year’s experience for you. Marty R.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
YEA Karen!! So glad to know that you made it this time (as Marty said, we remember last year :-( Thank you for the wonderful video. The mountains were so CLEAR, and those clouds were really something. Was glad to see the races on TVG, but they didn’t spend much time in the paddock area so your “up close and personal” views are always appreciated. I still have to pinch myself to believe that I was really THERE!!!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Seconding Sandy’s comments. Thank you, Karen, for keeping us up-to-date on Rightful’s progress.

Thanks, Karen, I enjoyed that! Always nice to see the horses up close walking in the paddock.
