Happy Friday!
We’re kicking off the weekend with new photos from Alys! As you can see, Zenyatta and her colt have been out enjoying the lush spring grass at Lane’s End. We’re sure they’re also anticipating our visit (and lots of peppermints)!
Our trip to Lane’s End begins early next week. If you’re eager to keep up with us while we’re at the farm, follow us on Instagram (TeamZenyatta) and Twitter for live updates.
Enjoy!

You notice that Zenny has taught her little ones all about the camera. The little red prince putting his nose in the camera, and past pictures of Coz always putting his face in the camera, reminded me of a video that proves where that all comes from; check it out!

Thanks for these wonderful links Roberta! The “Feeding Zenyatta” video (link on the previous page) was great also. Even after all this time, I am still amazed at the access that was provided to the public. Imagine being able to stand as close to Zenny as these people were! I don’t imagine any of us late-comers will ever be able to do this, but the videos are the next best thing.

Roberta,
Thanks for that video!! Zenyatta has surely had a great life and she has been treated so kindly by all who care for her. It shows by how trusting and calm she is in all situations. I have never seen her flustered by anything.
She has spread that calm, trusting attitude onto her babies too.

I spent time with Team Eblouissante before heading to New York today.
I was so blessed to have this opportunity to chat with Mario Espinoza, Groom for Zenyatta and Eblouissante. He reflects on his time with Zenyatta and looks to the future with Eblouissante as he and his wife transition to New York with John Shirreffs.
I will forever remember the moments I spent at Barn 55 South and I’m so grateful to John Shirreffs for allowing me to spend time and say good bye to Ebby.

Although the color pics are wonderful with the contrast in colors of mom and foal, the first black and white photo is stunning!!!!! What a handsome colt. Just had four TB foals born myself in the last month. Love them. One of my fillies looks alot like Z13. Thanks for keeping us all informed. I am a huge fan of Team Zenyatta.

We’re talking about whether Red will turn gray or stay chestnut. Oxbow is 3 and they are still wondering whether he is bay or roan. Lukas had him examined by the Jockey Club twice. They finally pronounced him to be bay, but the debate goes on.

Hi Max….this “roan” always confuses me….having seen Oxbow up close several times…my completely uninformed opinion is …he is gray…never occurred to me he was anything else …and the roan color in thoroughbreds is a whole other issue….last I read …the only true roans are one family in australia…he is a beautiful guy…no matter his color
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Ann, Max and Carol:
Purple Roan; that would really be something. Hugs, JB
Max
Ann NC and Carol: Love your comments. I had no idea at that color was an issue with Oxbow. I just assumed that he was bay from the photos. Ox has gray in his pedigree so that it stands to reason that gray could be an issue. Agree with Carol. He is handsome no matter what color that he is or will become. Purple however would be very nice!

Max–I’m so glad you brought this up. I wanted to pose the same question. I thought someone said we could tell in 2 weeks, but I guess that’s not necessarily so?

Is there any chance that Zenyatta will be bred to Frankel in the future? I think that would be a great match of race horse genes, but I’m not sure that will be possible, since he’s overseas.

It would be interesting. The Mosses could surely afford the stud fee.

Horse Racing Reform tweets
The Jockey Club and TOBA today announce the launch of a new web site.
It replaces the previous site: Clean Horse Racing

There are many new features at Horse Racing Reform, specifically a state-by-state summaries of medication rules and safety requirements……and a timeline charting industrywide medication- and safety-reform initiatives that have been launched

In the old days, and I’m talking Man O’War’s time here, Horses could run with ANY medication or combination of Medications as long as the stewards knew about it. The only time trainers got in hot water was when they switched medications without telling the stewards. Let’s see-Who was in charge of racing then?

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum issued the following statement:
“I was appalled and angered to learn that one of our stables in Newmarket has violated Godolphin’s ethical standards and the rules of British racing. I have been involved in British horse racing for 30 years and have deep respect for its traditions and rules. I built my country based on the same solid principles. There can be no excuse for any deliberate violation. Godolphin is fully cooperating with the British Horseracing Authority to get to the bottom of this matter and take any appropriate disciplinary action. I have ordered the Godolphin management to undertake an immediate review of our internal procedures and controls to ensure to prevent any reoccurrence of this type of activity in any stables of mine. We will be locking down the Moulton Paddocks stables with immediate effect, and I have instructed that I want a full round of blood samples, and dope testing done on every single horse on that premises. I can assure the racing public that no horse will run from that yard this season until I have been absolutely assured by my team that the entire yard is completely clean. I have worked hard to ensure that Godolphin deserves its reputation for integrity and sportsmanship, and I have reiterated to all Godolphin employees that I will not tolerate this type of behaviour.”

Dear Barbara Wood TX,
Good morning to you, how is Tx and the good people of Waco holding up? we continue to hold them up in Prayers. I am a Texan myself haven gone to school at UTSW in Dallas.
Thank you for replying to my post re- Big Brown. I am happy they are finally taking off the shoes. I sincerely believe had he had time for his foot to heal, he would have won the triple crown, no doubt in my mind. I was so happy he won the Haskell invitational 2008, its worth watching again, you saw he had the heart of a champion, for,in spite of his foot still bothering him, he chased down was it Cool play to win the race. Oh, how I prayed. It was a bit of redemption but I was glad. I lost interest in racing because I thought Big Brown was unfairly treated. I did not care for his connections whom I found arrogant, but what did it have to do with B Brown?. The Queen restored that interest again and with the connections she has, it was smooth sailing for me and racing again.
Sorry am venting but I still feel emotional about the whole handling of Big by his connections. That’s life.
Have a Blessed day.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Maureen–you can vent here anytime! I was glad to give the good report, even if old, on BB.
Thank you so much for caring about the tragedy here. It is a relly big deal. Tomorrow afternoon at the Ferrell Center on the Baylor campus (where we were last night for the Lady Bear Appreciation Banquet), they are having a huge memorial service for the first responders who were killed in the explosion. The President will be here, as well as many other dignitaries. The Secret Service was already here last night. It will take time to heal. It turned out that the video that was taken of the explosion that many of you saw on tv was taken by one of my former students. There is hardly anyone here in Waco who doesn’t have some kind of connection to someone in West, even if it was just to stop at the Czech bakeries for kolaches, etc.

Thank you Barbara, the Nation will be with you all tomorrow as you all lay your hero’s to rest. The devil is a liar and we will be Victorious and smile again. May the souls of our dearly departed Rest in Perfect Peace. Our God is good, it is well.

Colonial Affair Dies in Argentina
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Wednesday, April 24, 2013 2:42 PM
Colonial Affair passed away the morning of April 23 at Haras El Paraiso in the Buenos Aires province of Argentina. The 23-year-old son of Pleasant Colony—Snuggle, by Nijinsky II, was shipped to Haras El Paraiso in 2003
Colonial Affair helped Julie Krone make history in 1993 by becoming the first female jockey to win the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) and first to win any of the Triple Crown races. He won three other graded stakes—the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I), Whitney Handicap (gr. I) and the Excelsior Handicap (gr. II)—all in 1994.

Today our dear Barbara “Skip” Grimaldi, President of Equi-Army No Days Off Until They Are All Safe (EAN) is trying to celebrate her birthday although she is ill and had to cancel her planned visit to Washington state.
Wishing you the happiest birthday possible under the circumstances, Skip!
PS to all–Barbara’s nickname, if you haven’t guessed, comes from Skipper, in honor of her career in the Navy.
A Birthday Poem for “Skip” Grimaldi
(April 24, 2013)
When our dear Skip
Did from the Navy retire,
’Twas perhaps not her desire
Just on tropical beaches to sit
And parasoled drinks to sip,
But how could she predict
A cause new to her heart
Would a fire
Inside her start
And she would her whole soul
To it commit.
Skip left behind the sea,
But as horse advocates
From all over this land
Together did band
In an Equi-Army
And Skip was asked
To assume command,
She took on the task,
And all too soon
It did her life consume.
There was no way
She a quiet life could lead
As thoughts of horses in dire need
Filled her mind every day,
From the carriage horse
On the streets of New York,
To the wild Mustang
Removed from his range,
To those fated to be a course
For some deviant with knife and fork.
But Skip is not one to jump ship–
Nor are her EAN cohorts.
This team many a lawsuit supports
The rights of the horse to assert
In American courts
And does through the media work
The public to convert.
And Skip continues us all to amaze
In countless ways
Large and small,
As she for instance us showed
How it fit her
To follow breaking news on Twitter!
Then there’r the things in scope truly grand,
As when Skip took the rescue
Of the ’Biscuit descendants in hand,
And there is nothing she wouldn’t do
For her little Arab Jericho.
Skip, your birthday trip
You’ve sadly had to forego
Since illness has laid you low.
A bacterial pest
Or a virus
Causing atypical pneumonia and bronchitis
Has kept you from feeling your best
And not allowed
That you fly west
To have with rescuer Dale
A joint birthday fest.
Being under the weather is grim
And your joy today does dim,
But you’re no quitter,
Your spirit remains unbowed.
This setback clearly does fail
To make you the least bit bitter–
You’ll soon over this illness prevail
And be right back in the swim!
Happy birthday, Skip, and many, many more!
maureen phi-llips

I was just watching Ellen, and they had a man on there that has done investigation on the abuse of Tennesee Walkers. He has a video on her site, and if they get 25,000 viewers, they will give $25,000 for the protection of these beautiful horses. They also would like people to write their state governments to stop this mistreatment of these horses. I couldn’t understand if they were trying to get a bill past, or if they were trying to prevent the bill from being vetoed, but you can see when you go on the site, as I will; I just wanted to get it out there for anyone that wanted to do something about it. I thought, because Zenny and her team stand for the good treatment of all horses, that the Zenyatta family would like to know. God Bless!!
