Happy Friday!
We’re kicking off the weekend with new photos from Alys! As you can see, Zenyatta and her colt have been out enjoying the lush spring grass at Lane’s End. We’re sure they’re also anticipating our visit (and lots of peppermints)!
Our trip to Lane’s End begins early next week. If you’re eager to keep up with us while we’re at the farm, follow us on Instagram (TeamZenyatta) and Twitter for live updates.
Enjoy!

@ Ann in NC–I love it that you remember that Barnaby likes watermelon! He surely DOES!! Boy,this past weekend,I should have taken him a bunch of it–he deserved it. I have been trying, and buying, various bits for him. I keep getting different advice from people as to which ones he might like. Thia past Saturday I tried yet another one–and he hated that one too! Finally,I took him out of the indoor arena and took his bridle off–then,I put his lovely padded halter on,clipped one end of his lead rope on to one side of his halter and then tied the other end to mthe other side of the halter and led him into the arena. I got up on him and just rode him with a lot of leg and and just pressure on the sides of the halter—and—he was as good as gold!!! What HE wants is —NO bit!!! You won’t believe what I was able to do with him on Sunday–will tell you when I get back from lunch!!! Tune in then!

Hi Sue:
I can’t get over that Barnby likes watermelon. That’s great that you were able to figure out what Barnby was trying to tell you.
Take care.

Oops. I meant Barnaby!!!

Sue. Whenever I am in the grocery store and see Fuji apples, I think of Barnaby. I’ll add watermelon to that.

Sue,
Great news on the , Barnaby front.
Barnaby plus watermelon makes me smile. Horses, kids, watermelon…we have a party! Plus clean up using the garden hose makes it fun.
Sounds like he loves you very much.

@Sue–thank you for listening to him! So many people don’t care to> Hugs to you and kisses on the nose to Barnaby!

Hi there Dumplings, Zenny, baby boy and Cozmi.
It’s early evening here, technically. I say “technically” because now that we have light for so much longer it’s easy to lose track of the time. But soon I’ll be pouring myself a glass of wine and starting dinner.
For those who read about the fabulous “chaser” Sprinter Sacre on THE VAULT recently, I wanted to share the news that he won his 10th straight chase earlier today at the Punchestown Festival in Ireland. Here’s a video of the race:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNzCe3oKkZQ&feature=youtu.be
New on THE VAULT is my own modest contribution to the pomp of the 2013 Oaks & Derby:
http://thevaulthorseracing.wordpress.com/2013/04/22/kentucky-oaks-derby-2013-in-praise-of-long-shots-and-underdogs/
Other than the above, not a great deal to report over the last few days, but I always love coming here and reading the posts, watching the videos and photos posted. As our Zenny would say TOO MUCH FUN!
Hugs to all and butterfly kisses to my Big Girl and her boys.

Thanks for the link to Sprinter Sacre’s most recent triumph! Those jump races are so interesting to me….I’m so far behind the learning curve on understanding over fences races – lol! Loved your new blog post, too!!

Abilgail; I do not get to come here as often as I would like, but I will definitely watch these links. I can not believe I have just seen these heart warming pictures Alys has taken of our Zenyatta and precious 13z.
Thankyou for letting us know about these links.

dear max and judy great win by sprinter sacre at punchestown and on his 7th birthday for England and st George!! equalled the mighty Istabraq in winning at Cheltenham Aintree and punchestown in one season I am glad his summer rest is coming up he didn’t seem to have the sparkle he usually has maybe the heavy ground I just hope they look after this magnificent horse
huge body blow to british racing with the godolphin drug scandal certify had a good chance in the guineas just makes you wonder who you can trust in this sport that we all love looking forward to seeing hurricane later this week max hugs sheena

Sheena. Great win. Sprinter is a fantastic chaser. I love that little kick as he jumps.
I am anxious about Quevega and Fly later this week. Hooves crossed for them.
My pick for the 1000 is Hot Snap trained by Henry Cecil. She runs like Z from the back. She’s also a big filly like Z. Here she is recently winning the Nell Gywn.

MAX: thank you so much! I wasn’t feeling confident about writing about the Oaks & Derby because once you’ve read Paulick, Haskin & etc. what’s left to say? It took me ages to come up with the idea of looking at colts & fillies who are “flying under the radar.” I saw today that Silsita picked up Gary Stevens for the Oaks.

Dear Abigail,
Ditto, what Terry C. said! I totally agree — long live The Vault, YES!!
Take care and lots of hugs
shirleeinindy
Just wondering if any of you all have done any comparisons of the actual calendar ages of the Derby horses? I have looked at a few of them and Palace Malice and Normandy Invasion both have 5/2 birthdays. Just curious if the younger horses did well in the Derby? They are still so young that it is perhaps possible that the month or so age difference really counts.
Rosie’s My Lute has a 2/26 birthday and Alydar in his pedigree.
I miss the flamboyance of Dr. Hansen and his beautiful gray horse. Spiced up the Derby coverage.
Max
Northern Dancer won the Kentucky Derby before his third birthday, May 27.
shirleeinindy
Thanks for the information Max. Of course, Northern Dancer was in a class all by himself. Be interesting to see the b’days of this year’s three year olds and who wins what.

Hi Shirleeinindy: I agree with you. Dr. Hansen really marketed his horse!!! That made the Kentucky Derby event fun!!! Hansen was my favoriate last year.

ANd if I’m not Mistaken, Secretariat was a May foal. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Brushwood Buys Bernardini Colt for $900,000
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Tuesday, April 23, 2013 8:49 PM
Bidding by phone, Betty Moran’s Brushwood Stable went to $900,000 to acquire a son of Bernardini from the family of champion Princess Rooney at the April 23 second session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s spring sale of 2-year-olds in training.
Named Prince Bernardini, the colt out of the winning Deputy Minister mare Rooney’s Princess was consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds. Rooney’s Princess, a daughter of champion Princess Rooney, is the dam of stakes winner Prince Rooney and stakes-placed V.I.P. Princess.

BARNABY WEEKEND–Part 2
Saturday afternoon was to have been our last day riding at the Susie Q. After I got him going so well with his halter,we intended to go out into the huge outdoor arena, where I had been wanting to ride ever since we first went to the ranch. Wouldn’t you know, the ranch hands picked that day to brand all the calves on the ranch and it was chaos all around! Barnaby was making himself very tall ( it is SO funny when he does this–it is beyond his just raising his head up high,he actually looks as though he is somehow able to stretch his whole body upwards, sort of like a person who is said to be “drawing himself up to his full height”–I swear, when he does it,it looks as though he is 17 hands high!) and just fixated on where the bawling sounds were coming from. I think he felt he was supposed to get to work and round up those cows,as he did on his dad’s ranch. Traveller was very agitated. We decided to just let them run in the outdoor arena and look around at what was going on. We figured that they might bolt in there if we tried to ride them. They had fun tearing around and then we called it a day, being quite nostalgic at leaving the ranch (though Sue will get to ride on the way back from her class on Thursday) and sorry that I had not been able to fulfill my dream. That evening,Sue called me and asked if I would like to make another trip down on Sunday,if the weather was nice, so we could try again. Of course,I was overjoyed at the idea, and, since the weather was lovely and sunny on Sunday,we went back.
By the time we got there,it was really windy, which always makes them”high”,and, there were tons of other riders there and lots going on. We brought them into the barn and tacked them up,after letting them run in the indoor arena for a few minutes. Rancher Tom said”you girls warm them up in the big arena inside before you take them out in that wind”—so–we did. It was interesting,as there were several other horses in the arena with us and we were all doing different things. Barnaby was wonderful and minded me beautifully. When we decided to take them out,it was blowing like mad and we weren’t sure HOW they would behave. The wind had blown a huge round watering trough out into the middle of the arena. Traveller took one look at it and refused to even go in! I left Barnaby with Sue so I had both hands free and then rolled it over to the side and through one of the side gates so that she could no longer seeit. Then I led Barnaby in and went across the arena to tie down some flapping plastic that I knew would scare Traveller. After that,we were finally ready to mount up. Sue wanted to go first, but Traveller was too “futzed” by the wind and scary things to stand still,so,Sue decided to just lead her around and forego the riding. I reassured Barnaby that he didn’t need to worry about anything and he let me get on with out a problem. It was WONDERFUL to be able to look out over the fence surrounding the arena to the mountains that abut the ranch be out under the bright blue sky with it’s puffy white clouds. Barnaby was excited by the wind, but he paid attention to me,following my signals and did NOT bolt. I was so proud of him,I could have cried! I did have tears in my eyes. After awhile,we went back into the indoor arena so Sue could ride too. It was the most fun I ever had riding Barnaby, because he was happy and not telling me every minute how much he hated his bit!
Sue told me about a great bitless bridle, which I looked up and am planning to order for him soon. It is called Dr. Cook’s Bitless Bridle. Does anyone here have any experience with one of these?? I would love to hear about it,if so.
Hope all here have a lovely evening. And hope our Queen,Little Red and Coz have a blessed and peaceful night. Love to all!!!
P.S. @ Auntie Trina–Your poem for John was without a doubt one of your finest! It must have brought tears to his and Dottie’s eyes Loved it!!!

Dear Sue Noel,
Really a cute story, you are a very descriptive writer! Did you say that Barnaby is a quarter horse? If so maybe he was ridden with a hackamore bridle. We had a gelding that would only go with this type of tack, as he had always been shown in western classes. Just a thought., hugs

Dear Sue,
Loved your story. You and B are really developing trust in each other. My daughter rides an arab/quarter and often rides w/ the rope halter and clip reins. It is a beautiful thing.
Remember, the Lava Man was transitioned into a hackamore w/ great success.
Give Barnaby a big ole pat on his neck!!!!

I know that feeling! I love riding bridle less and bareback on Red. I trust him to act like he has some sense and he trusts me to stay on and not fall off. It’s a great thing, to have such mutual trust in each other.

Sue–love your stories! I have a call in to Sherry Beth about bitless bridles. If she has anything extra to add, I’ll pass it along. Do I ever know about wind! Geez. Farrier coming today. She will see if he won’t work on him in the big aisle of the barn. It’s a cold wind too! They can close the door on the end and keep most of the wind out.

Dear Judy
Thank you so much for the article on the previous page of the Brothers “Dan”. I so love seeing them and reading about them. I hope too he keeps them seperated for a while.
Had a busy day today, but just getting in here on the computer today to read.
Guess who I sawon bloodhorse today, Yep, “That’s My Boy” VyJack. I thought it was a really good picture and article. I didn’t realize or maybe I forgot that Rudy worked for Bobby Frankel. Hope maybe he picked up some of his greatness. I liked Bobby very much. Some of the bad press about Rudy I have hated seeing. But Dale Romans seems has been so gracious to him. He seems to be a good trainer. Hope the bad stuff is in the past.
You know what I have to go back and read again or go to Wikopedia. When is Northern Dancer’s Birthday? I am remembering seeiing May 27, But I was reading back too fast.
If that is true he and I almost share the same birthday. I am May 29, and guess who else is a May Baby, My Orfevre May 14…………….
OK I have to go check out Northern Dancer’s birthday.
Max
Northern Dancer’s birthday is May 27, 1961. He was a late baby because his mother, Natalma, retired unexpectedly from racing in the spring of 1960. They decided nevertheless to breed her with Nearctic even though it was very late in the season. ND won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness before he was 3. The Dancer in his name is taken from his dam sire, the Gray Ghost, Native Dancer.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
Yes he and i are very close for our birthdays. The day that is. Wish I could say I was born in l961, but mine was l953.

@ Sue Fredrick—I did try a hackamore on him and he did not like that either–the pressure against the sides of his nose was too severe for him. Tom was afraid that if I kept it up he was going to go “straight up” on me when I asked him to stop. He seems to be very sensitive . I hope someone on here will have had an experience with the Dr. Cook’s bridle–especially before I spend 330.00 on it,including reins!!
Ann NC
Sue,
My daughter’s horse has a very soft mouth and is very sensitive.
She started getting anxious, seems like the same head thing like your B.
She tried this bit:http://www.statelinetack.com/item/stubben-steeltec-baucher-bit/E002737/
The extra ring w/ the snaffle was her ticket.
I hope you find what works. Sounds like he likes the extra padding on the nose, many bridles have the cris- cross w/ padding?
Can you work w/ a local tack shop,in case of returns?
Good luck!!!
Sue Noel/Sun Valley,ID
@ Sue F.-Again!! For got one thing—yes,he is a quarterhorse–rather a quarter horse/paint cross. Though he has no spots, just his big blaze and 3 white socks. Good morning Roberta,
Thank you so much for the 2 video’s you posted. I didn’t know how to feel about the S Slew’s documentary. All I kept thinking to myself was that the Mosses would never have handled Queen Z the way Slew was later handled after the Triple Crown win.All he ever asked for was a little rest, but boy, did he have Heart. Prince ZT actually reminds me of him, his muscularity and long legs. May my sweet Slew rest in perfect peace.
Another Horse that I always pray gets redemption through his off springs is Big Brown. Am glad that some of his off springs are doing well currently.
Here is wishing you a Blessed day. It is well.

Vicky B,
What an unbelievable story. I can’t believe someone would do something like this. When we had our farm people would dump kittens in the pasture probably figuring they would make it to the barn and live there. We wound up spending money getting them shots and then tried to find homes for them……but a stud colt……amazing. Hope this lady can find something out about his lineage and maybe an owner so she can prosecute. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the story. hugs
maureen phi-llips
Dear Vicki B,
What do you say to that?, unreal, but you never know, we may just have a triple crown winner come out of those crop and a sweet ending to this whole saga.
Maybe we should take up a collection for the poor lady so she can keep feeding those pregnant mares. Any suggestions anyone?
Have a lovely morning, it is well.
