Happy Friday!
We’re kicking off the weekend with new photos from Alys! As you can see, Zenyatta and her colt have been out enjoying the lush spring grass at Lane’s End. We’re sure they’re also anticipating our visit (and lots of peppermints)!
Our trip to Lane’s End begins early next week. If you’re eager to keep up with us while we’re at the farm, follow us on Instagram (TeamZenyatta) and Twitter for live updates.
Enjoy!

Trina Nagele in So Cal --PUR
A Poem of Fare-Well
(April 22, 2013)
’Tis with a heavy heart
That we SoCal-ers see
John Shirreffs today depart
From his beloved Barn 55
At Hollywood Park
Where once Zenny did reside.
It was here that John
Trained Z,
And ’twas here that she
Made her first start,
The first of nineteen victories.
As she went on
She won the West Coast’s heart,
And we all did of her boast
As the horse we loved the most.
In 2010 all the nation
Joined in the celebration
And chose her
For eminent distinction
As racing’s
Horse of the Year.
Now I hear
That the historic scene
Where the Queen
First reigned supreme
Is facing
Imminent extinction,
To be torn asunder
By bulldozers
In a developers’ blunder.
Perhaps as soon as this fall
Racing at the Inglewood track
Known as Hollywood Park
Will forever go dark–
There’ll be no going back.
We wish John Shirreffs all the best
As he now leaves the dusty West
To realize his dream to train
On the bustling East Coast,
Which certainly top class
Racing does host.
As in the famous refrain,
We know John’ll “make it” there
For he could make it ANYwhere!
He will of course
From here be able
To take with him a stable
Of horses,
Among them the magnificent E.
While we SoCal Z-sters
Find it almost tragic
That we’ll no longer see
The gorgeous Ebby,
We’re happy that Easterners will at last
Experience her magic,
For she
Is so like Z,
Her older sister.
We hope many another promising racer lands
In John Shirreffs’s capable hands.
And John may rest assured,
Those days of Camelot,
Of which all have heard,
When Z was Queen
And John was king,
Will never be forgot!
Marty R / Colorado
Beautiful sentiments, Trina, as only you can express. I know John Shirreffs surely will be missed.
Karen Gogue
Awww adorable you bring me to tears – thank you for such a lovely poem for ‘our’ John <3
Terry Crow
I will certainly miss him. A truly class act. Visiting Barn 55 was a real treat and I will never forget it. Too bad California racing is in such a precipitous decline. I was shocked when Bay Meadows went away and the thought of Hollywood Park having the same fate is sobering. I guess my old friend Native Diver will have to find a new resting place. I believe that it is no coincidence that Bay Meadows and Hollywood Park are owned by the same corporation. Has money come to mean everything?
Janet Newman
Thanks Trina,
A wonderful tribute to a wonderful trainer.
Wishing him the success he deserves.
Celeste_in_TX
How beautiful, Trina!! I know this is a very tough time for all – the fans who’ve been able to visit Barn 55 and watch those special horses all race, the workers and the Shirreffs whole family. It must have been a very tough decision, but I’m sure it will work to his advantage because he is such a fine horseman. I wish them all the very best, but I do understand the sad feelings involved. Thanks for expressing things so well, as you always do.

♥ Dear Trina
Thank you for your tribute poem in honor of the Horse Whisperer, John Shirreffs. He is such a kind and gentle man!
Karen and I spent quality time at Barn 55 yesterday morning. We got to watch Ms. Ebby do a final gallop, cool down, and get a bath :-) Thank you, John, Dottie, Mr. Moss, Frank, Mario, Steve, Michelle, Jacqueline and ALL of Team 55 for your gracious hospitality over the years.
We gave Eblouissane a goodbye kiss ♥ on the nose (she is such a loving creature!) and tearfully left……… God bless all of them XO
Auntie Judy thanked them from the bottom of her ♥
p.s. the Krispy Kreme donuts left them bouncing off the walls LOL

Dear Auntie Judy:
I did get your sweet e-mail and I would be feeling just as you and all the CA Dumplings and Z’sters are feeling about JS, E and the other horses leaving for NY. Just remember you have developed such a bond with all of them that they will not forget you. All of them will remember you when they return in the Fall and you get to visit them again. Hugs, JB

Thanks for another beauty Trina (and I loved the name of the poem that seems to indicate not only “good-by” but also a wish for John and all of his connections. I’m so glad to have met him even briefly. New York is, perhaps, geographically closer for those of us in the middle of the country but in other ways, even farther away. I hope that he feels all of the thanks and good wishes. At least we can continue to follow him electronically and hope that maybe he will have a BC contender.

Dear Trina,
Simply amazing,! thank you so much, I try not to think about’ the hands of the developer’s blunder’ with regards to the eminent extinction of Barn 55 where our Queen Zenyatta once called home. We will forever carry it in our hearts and no one will take that away from us. It is well.
Wishing John, Dottie and all their crew the very best. The best is yet to come.
Have a Blessed rest of the day and week.

Trina. I echo the congrats of many here, who are thankful for this poem. John Shirreffs certainly deserves the tribute of such a great poem send off. Beautifully done as always.

Thanks for the links to videos of Northern Dancer and Storm Cat. I was also pleasantly surprised by the beautiful footage of Alydar playing in his paddock at the end of the Northern Dancer video. In June of 1985 I was in Lexington Kentucky and feel so lucky to have been able to see not only the three living Triple Crown Winners Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed but also Nijinsky II, Sir Ivor, Spectacular Bid, Gallant Man, Raise a Native (sire of Alydar) and Exclusive Native (son of Raise a Native and sire of Affirmed and Genuine Risk) among others . I vividly remember that Seattle Slew had the highest stud fee of them all which at the time was $750,000!
Terry Crow
Alydar remains the only horse to finish second in all three triple crown races, losing to Affirmed. He was a wonderful racehorse and a most successful sire. However, the story surrounding his death is one of the most nefarious stories in the history of horse racing. I remember well when all of this went down about Calumet Farm. Anyone interested in this story can look up the details. Horrible, horrible, horrible. This story deserves to be retold so that it never happens again.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Terry Crow,
Love hearing from you again, the blog has been missing your jokes and your special insights. I too remember hearing something about the horrible death of the magnificent Alydar. Hard to believe people can be this cruel. Welcome back kind sir. hugs
Terry Crow
Thank you, Sue. Good to see you are still here. Wisconsin will always be well represented by you. Alydar’s death was all about money and, in my opinion, forever sullied the name of Calumet Farm. I would like to hear more from others on this subject. It is something that is not brought up very often.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
Yes, remember this well. Sadder even than Ferdinand, Exceller and all the other hores who are slaughtered because it happened right here at home. Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
You are right, Judy. For me, it was worse than slaughter. If Alydar had been a famous human there would have been a movie made about his death. Maybe there should be one anyway.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
That is a story that should be told. There was an hour episode on Dominick Dunn’s Power, Privilege and Justice on Alydar’s death that I saw a while back. A movie would be better. Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
I did not know about the Dunne program. Would like to see it. Did they treat it as the outrage it was but downplay it because, after all, Alydar was “just a horse.”
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP and Z Fans:
It was told with compassion for Alydar and distain for Mr. Lundy. Here is an article close to the transcript of the TV episode entitled “Unbridled Greed”. Couldn’t find a video. Hugs, JB

Thanks for this link , JB. My cowgirls rode by the farm on their KY excursion. Their professor filled them in on the history, I will pass this along to them, they were very disturbed by the story.
I was spring cleaning and found an original Calumet Farm brochure,WOW!
I just find it puzzling that a family w/ such holdings could let this happen. To grow up on such a famous farm and then wash your hands of it all, turning it over to a man your family detested? Weird? Everyone is to blame. Weird?
Terry Crow
Judy-Thanks for the link. This article was well written and states the situation exactly the way I remember it.
maryp ny
The shame that the “killer” could not be punished for what would be first degree murder had it been a human being. Money and greed has always been a motive for acts of this kind. A movie would surely be he opposite of the “feel good” Seabiscuit and Secretariat movies.
Happy to see your post Terry.
Terry Crow
maryp-Your sentiments are mine. Whenever I bring this subject up I get blank stares from people. It is amazing that this story is not more familiar to the public. I’ll get off my soapbox for awhile, but I will never forget.
Janet Newman
Terry,
Yes, I will always remember the terrible way Alydar was
murdered, sorry no other way to say it. The pain and fear he must have
endured. That man married into a family of wealth and tore Calumet
to the ground metaphorically. Bought private jets, etc and got his rear in a bind.
Destroy your farm’s top stallion for the insurance money.
Hell is too good for that man.
shirleeinindy
The Devil is waiting in hell for him. There are no words that convey my contempt for this thing that some might call “human.” Monster is more like it.
I loved Alydar and in my usual fashion picked him over Affirmed every time.

Did no one like the name Adonis of Zen for our red prince? He looks like an Adonis (Like a handsome one) of Zen (from Zenyatta & also Zen meaning an enlightenment, a direct knowledge of great things) this speaks to his unbelievable maturity, confidence and carriage of himself, at such a young age. He is special, and needs a special name. Look at him standing behind his mother, at I believe he was 18 days old, and say the name Adonis of Zen; don’t you think it fits? Like to hear from you all!! I hope the Mosses read our responses to these beautiful pictures!!

That name sure fits him. You can be sure the Mosses will come up with one that is absolutely perfect.

Because of you I am still alive, I think you are wonderful. God Bless you and your family, Michele.
Michele Moore from Tx.
Dear Barbara, I am probably closer than you know, I live in Beaumont, Tx. @ 90 miles east of Houston, give or take a few miles depending on what part of Houston you are going to. I usually always fly out of George Bush Airport, well what used to be IAH and when my sister wants to go on a shopping spree we are always there. My dear Mother loved the Galleria, Neiman Marcus and Sakowitz when it was located downtown. ( they had the best miniature cinnamon rolls.) I always went to concerts at the Summit and now watch Joel Osteen on TV in the same building. My brother-in-law and my middle sister live in Jacksonville, Fl. where my mom and I lived for about a yr., but we returned. He is a pilot with Delta and always flies to Europe but sometimes he comes into Houston and we have been able to be there to greet him. I lost my Mother in August, 2009 and for some reason fell madly in love with Zenyatta, and that is how I met Kari through YouTube for the comments I left on her videos. She was amazing and through her I flew to Louisville to see Queen Z in her last race. This horse has done more for me than anyone knows. The people I work with fell in love with her and my oldest sister too who I work with. She is on all our screen savers and people ask if she is my horse and then my story starts. She was the last thing I asked about before surgery and the first thing I asked about when coming around. I only hope to touch her one day, like Kari, I live with her in my heart. Thank you so much for your kindness, what wonderful people you are on this blog, I simply love all of you. Hopefully I will find out May 2nd if I am truly cancer free, there are some questions, but you know what? my birthday is May 6th and I am alive to see it because of people like you and everyone around Zenyatta, what wonderful individuals her owners, trainer and wife, groomers, and handlers were to her and us, God Bless, Michele. (P.S. and her staff now at Lane’s End)

Good morning Judy W.
Thanks for the lovely post. No, it is not too much to dream, it will happen for our dear Red, it is his destiny.
Have you ever wondered why the great ones get defeated by rivals that their name spell dome? Man of War’s sole defeat coming on the heels of a horse name UPSET!, and our Queen by a horse named @ BLAME!. How is Blame doing anyways, he is a good boy, even though he has the unpopular distinction of being the one to defeat our Queen. I love him though, did not think they should have retired him right after. Oh well, that’s life.
Have a Blessed day. It is well.
Terry Crow
Interesting. There are those who say that Man O’War’s defeat came because the starter did not notice that he was facing sideways when the race began. In those days, there were no starting gates and races began when the starter gave the signal.

When I first posted this joke, Tasty Temptation was Zenyatta’s best pasture buddy. I will post it now as I did then. To those who know this joke in another form, I apologize. It is an old chestnut. Zenyatta had been at Lane’s End for some time and was friends with all in the barn. She brought Tasty Temptation to the barn so that she could meet all of her friends. When Z and TT entered the barn area, the sounds of horses laughing were everywhere. “Why is everyone laughing?” asked Tasty. “One of the mares just told a joke,” Z said. “All I heard was a number being shouted out,” said Tasty,. “Well, you’re new so you don’t know the routine. We have all heard these jokes so many times that we have assigned each one a number. When the number is shouted out by one of the mares, we all remember the punch line and laugh,” said Z. Tasty wanted to be part of the gang, so she whinnied out “34.” Dead silence was all there was. ‘What happened?”‘ said Tasty. “It was the same number that was whinnied out before.” Z replied “Sorry, Tasty. Some horses just can’t tell a joke.”

Hi Maureen, it is a good name, but I hope you don’t mine that I like mine better; it’s to do with ancient times and Godlike; his name has to be so special and different!! Of course, who are we to say?
I love so much that picture of Zenyatta & Mike; she loves those mints, and can’t wait for them to be opened. It reminds me of a video, called “Feeding Zenyatta” on You Tube; so many people were feeding her mints, and trying to feed her other things too, but the only other thing she ate was carrots. There was such a nice lady there feeding her, and wanted to give Zenny an apple, but Zenny wanted to hunt in her pockets for more mints. Of course she was gentle and patient as always. and at the end, she just looked so regal (where the red prince gets it).
maureen phi-llips
Hi Roberta,
Of cause, your name for the Prince trumps mine, just thought I’d act knowledgeable but you weren’t buying it. So true about the pricelessness of the Mike, Queen Zenyatta photo and so true of the young Prince Adonis Zen inheriting his mama’s patience. Isn’t he just adorable?. Sounds just like what John would say.
My Prince CoZmic One is also a true blood and I love him so, He reminds me so much of his dad the way he walks, with that Brooding arrogance. Lets not talk of his mama’s beauty that he possesses, ‘miss America’ wasted on a horse! Don’t get me started.
Have you a Blessed week, and thanks. It is well.
Roberta
Hi Maureen,
Checkout the you tube video “Feeding Zenyatta” I have it on my taskbar, but I don’t know how to give you the link. After I told you about it, I watched it again; it is so beautiful, and shows her so close-up. It is funny, beautiful, and heartwarming all at the same time. At the end of the video, she poses so close to the camera, and looks so regal; you fall in love with her all over again. It’s so good to be in Zenyatta world, with such nice people; she brings out the best in all of the people she touches!!

‘Dark day’ for Godolphin as Al Zarooni faces BHA
Racing UK.com Monday 22 April 2013
Classic-winning Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni is to face a British Horseracing Authority disciplinary panel hearing after “serious irregularities” were found in samples taken from horses in his care in Newmarket.
Al Zarooni, who won the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster last year with Encke and has trained a whole host of big-race winners since joining Sheikh Mohammed’s operation, told the Godolphin website he had made a “catastrophic error”.
He said on the Godolphin website: “I deeply regret what has happened. I have made a catastrophic error.
“Because the horses involved were not racing at the time, I did not realise that what I was doing was in breach of the rules of racing. I can only apologise for the damage this will cause to Godolphin and to racing generally.”

Godolphin Horses Test Positive for Steroids
By Frank Angst, The Blood-Horse Updated: Monday, April 22, 2013 3:25 PM
Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni has admitted to administering anabolic steroids to 11 horses at the Moulton Paddocks Stables that tested positive for the prohibited substances.
Under the British Horseracing Authority’s testing in training program, the horses tested positive for the prohibited substances ethylestranol and stanozolol, both anabolic steroids. Group I winner Certify, who had been pointing for the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas (Eng-I) at Newmarket next month, tested positive for ethylestranol and will not be allowed to compete in the classic.

And a DRF article also said: “In a statement, Godolphin’s racing manager, Simon Crisford, said, “This is a dark day for Godolphin. Sheikh Mohammed was absolutely appalled when he was told, and this is completely unacceptable to him.”
Crisford said that Godolphin will await the British Horseracing Authority’s inquiry before taking “any further internal action.” He said that Sheikh Mohammed has ordered a review of Godolphin’s “procedures and controls.”

Yea, I was so shocked when I first read this. I want my racing/breeding farm be as great as Godolphin one day, and I hope that if they replace the trainer, there is no repeat. If they don’t, I hope the mortification he caused one of the most powerful names in the industry is punishment enough, and he (the trainer) shapes up ASAP.

Pati, Glad I am not that trainer. This is the first time that I can remember any stain on the Godolphin name. I think he is going to be a very unhappy unemployed person.
