I often think back on the making of American Thoroughbred. I miss the quiet nights I spent under the stars in Kentucky. Listening to the sounds of nature as I lay in my tent thinking about the next day’s photography session. I feel so fortunate to have dedicated a part of my life to documenting these incredible beautiful creatures. There are few things greater than to have the freedom to work on your dream, and feel a great sense of pride and gratitude upon completion.

Since American Thoroughbred, I have started numerous projects that have stopped as quickly as they have started. I find myself wondering if I will ever find the intensity and passion I had when working on American Thoroughbred. It just felt so completely simple and honest. I have been searching for that feeling again. I believe the moment finds you, and searching is hopeful but rarely fruitful.

The day I met Zenyatta was a special day. By the time I had the chance to photograph her my lens had been in front of the most famous thoroughbreds of our life time. None had struck me the way Zenyatta did. I remember her walking around the corner of my back drop. She was like no other Thoroughbred I had seen. She was sophisticated, gracious and confident. More than anything I felt a connection that is hard to describe. I was emotionally connected to her from first sight. I understood her, I could feel her, we were communicating. Above all she gave so much love, that feeling will be with me always.

The strange thing was that as I was working on American Thoroughbred, I was often asked “When will you be finished”. I would always respond with the same answer “when I know it’s over”. I remember the exact moment I knew it was over, it was the very last time my shutter clicked when photographing Zenyatta. I knew what I had on that roll of film said it all, there was nothing left to say. I can recall the precise moment; the camera fell to my side, I turned away and handed the camera to my assistant and said “it’s finished”. I felt a sense of sadness as I said those words, I was never happy to have finished, I never wanted it to be over.

I am forever grateful to the Moss family and all the supporters of Zenyatta. Your generosity and kind words are with me.

    Dear Judy.Such a beautiful photo.We are mourning the loss of Grand National winner Red Marauder who died peacefully last night aged 26yrs.His win was all the more memorable because only 2 horses finished in the atrocious conditions.He lived with his jockey Richard Guest.I posted a short link on the previous blog it’s worth a look.I’l see you Saturday.     spare tall warm good kind chaser Red Marauder who died peacefully aged 26yo he lived with his jockey Richard Guest, Zi :-) i like 3yo grey filly Sterling’s Bailesa foaled march8, 2013 :-) , Zi :-) well workout , novem15 five furlongs 62:20 49:76 on four furlongs novem23 five furlongs 61:60 49:28 on four furlongs shows that your time is stable and near with time of Chromy in his light night workout first four furlongs 49 and 2/5, Zi after 8 or 11 days of good rest make short light workout 49:60 like mom Zenny, only for to support racing shape, Zi :-) you are lower height horse than Coz :-) and mom Zenny :-) , your store of energy is lower than store of energy of Coz and mom Zenny, Zi from my view for race better to watch weather forecast and to choose days with clouds rain sloppy course 8 or 11 days from previous short light workout, Coz :-) your fetlock joints now time is thin like thin legs of Zi :-) , Coz :-) same wishes for you like wishes to Zi :-)

    Coz :-) and Zi :-) in workouts dont breeze more quickly than four furlongs in 49:28 from previous heat summer it is clear that time more quick than 49:28 is not joyfull for you and is not usefull for your health and legs, races begin from 1 1/16 miles or 8,5 furlongs, if you will choose days for workout or race with clouds rain and sloppy course your health and legs will be more safe, before race feel that you are full healthy well rested and want lil to breeze quickly, choose races where hind horses get lil prizes see about this pages of Curalina :-) :-( and Rachel’s Valentina :-) hear John ,, ,, ,, ,,

    beautyfull Zenny :-) do all quietly and not quickly, walk on air, eat apples pears care of your health, say to Vixana too :-) , beautyfull Zenny Zi Coz de Coronado grey Sterling’s Bailesa Winx Aeolian by Street Cry and mates stay comfy and cozy eat apples pears care of your health kiss your soft noses, Chromy :-) for some chance you can to breeze in Pegasus like Frosted :-) in hind breeders cup, after second turn he didnt increase speed and breezed on his own speed this was usefull for his air health and legs, lil 16z lil 14z filly Dubai im remembering you

    On this Thanksgiving day, all of us can give thanks that we were witness to Zenyatta’s genius.

    I used to be so envious of those Americans who had watched Seabiscuit race.

    But now I know that we have our very own memories of another thoroughbred whose name will never, ever be forgotten.

    And part of that historic record will be Neil Latham’s portraits of Zenyatta.

    They are truly works of art.

    November 25 Cherokee Devotional

    During the late evening hours in the country, a song of nature frequently rises in the woods and again from the prairie to the north. A chorus of coyotes, probably only three or four but sounding like dozens, yip and howl enough to stir up all the neighborhood dogs.       Thank you for this article on Galileo. He really is stunningly gorgeous — love his coloring and form. All those wonderful assets PLUS a fabulous temperament, what a horse! It is amusing that his sire, Sadler’s Wells, beat him in the “posing for the camera department”, but admittedly, Galileo hardly needs to pose. Like our Z, every angle is beautiful!

    Champion mare Untapable is to visit Frankel next season and is likely to stay in Europe for 2 years.She will lodge at the National Stud in Newmarket.Look forward to her foals.

    Remembering our beloved Red Cadeaux who was sadly euthanised after injuries he suffered in the Melbourne Cup last year.At first it seemed he was recovering well from his surgery but it was not to be for this much travelled warrior.His ashes were interred at Flemington a place he call home.Rest in peace always.Forever in my heartX
