Why We Love This Game: in Danonymous Racing Jan. 18 2016
Anyone who knows me in person or follows me on Twitter is probably pretty aware of my love and passion for California Chrome, – Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, and Horse of the Year in 2015. I first fell in love with him as he flew home to win the Santa Anita Derby. Watching him opening up on the field with such ease and listening to Trevor yell, “and California Chrome will be carrying the hopes of California all the way to the Kentucky Derby – he waltzed home under Victor Espinoza,” was all it took. http://www.danonymousracing.com/why-we-love-this-game-written-by-robin-buchanan/
For our bird lover members-sandhill cranes migrate through Arizona.
22,000 Sandhill Cranes – See ’em Before They’re Gone! VIDEO
Arizona Game & Fish Department Published on Jan 9, 2014
Every winter thousands of sandhill cranes make Arizona their winter home. The State’s largest concentration of these magnificent birds – more than 20,000 of them – put on a spectacular show daily at the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area in southern Arizona.
But act fast, the cranes are usually gone by the end of February https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXwipKpatSY&feature=youtu.be
Dear BGG and Sheena,
Love the cranes. They winter here in NM about 3 hours from our home at the Bosque Wildlife Refuge. We go over almost every year in November to watch and photograph their ‘fly-ins’ and ‘outs’ of the water. They sleep in the ponds and lakes at night (to keep from getting eaten by coyotes and wolves). They stand on 1 leg in the water with their other one tucked up. At dawn they fly out of the water and go to the grain fields to spend their day munching; then at dusk fly back to the water. Their wingspan is huge (I think about 6 feet).
When they are landing (in the water or the fields) they look like paratroopers with their legs bent up and their wings canopied out. It’s truly a wonder to see. We photograph predawn through dusk and take way too many photos, but it is such a thrilling adventure! It’s a wonderful “ruckus” as the cranes are calling out to each other constantly – while all of us humans are lined up, before sunrise and at sunset, snapping photos in the freezing cold along the shoreline. My husband and I have our 35 mm cameras and we’re next to all of the professional photographers (from National Geographic, Birdwatchers Digest, and all of the other birders from various publications ) with their ‘real’ cameras – which are huge. We’re all just snapping pics in the freezing weather for hours like a bunch of fools… and we all probably are – but it’s the most thrilling fun! The birds are beautiful and graceful landing with the backdrop of the surrounding mountains in the amazing light. Wish you all could come and be there with us. One of these days, I’ll try to post a few pics.
Then of course, there are the ‘ospreys’! Better save those stories for another time.
Hope everyone has a good evening. with love, Elizabeth

The Crane Clock: Best times to view Sandhill Cranes
The best times to view sandhill cranes on the wildlife camera will be from daylight until about an hour afterwards before they have left the roost to feed for the morning.
They will return to Whitewater Draw sometime in the late morning, generally before noon. The cranes will remain at the wildlife area for the remainder of the day and should be visible. Please note that we will do our best to keep the camera trained on cranes and other interesting subjects however sometimes wildlife is uncooperative. If there is not much happening when you visit the camera, please check us again soon. The camera will be available for public viewing from October (when cranes first start to arrive at Whitewater Draw) through March or early April when they leave for their northern migration to the nesting grounds. https://www.azgfd.com/wildlife/viewing/sandhillcranes/cranecam/

Here’s some news for you. Just discovered that K Vic is owned by a syndicate, one of the members being Rose Boyd, who also owns The Fly. Vic is not Irish. Vic is British. He may be named after a parish in County Galway, but Vic is an Ulster horse.
Dear Max.Thanks for that news.No wonder he got up and went on to win being he’s British!!No, I am not boasting!Looking forward to the weekend should be fun for Mullins.Arctic Fire was found to have an infection last time out which explains his below par performance.Sarah loves him.Another filly arrived at the Irish Stud last night girls everywhere this year.Hugs Sheena

All British grit on full display from Vic for sure. That horse is awesome.
Mullins said that Nic, Faugheen and Arctic Fire are all feeling well. However, he also said that you do not know when something might go wrong before they get to the track. John Shirreffs says this too.
I also like Arctic Fire and Thousand Stars. Very difficult not be like a nice gray horse. Northern Dancer’s dam sire as you might recall is perhaps the most wonderful gray of all time, Native Dancer.

Allblak is a young horse, only 4. I think that Mullins has been training him for a short period of time. He was in France before. His jockey there was Jacques Ricou. Think of all the lovely things-a moment of inner peace, the flash of a cardinal’s wings against the dark woods, the sweet cry of a violin, a soft pillow and gentle sleep. These graces help us keep our balance. Small unnoticed things give us peace. They remind us that if there is anything good to think about we should think on these things. They help us forgive the hurts and release the regrets and grief of yesterday. As we turn to the graces and lovely things of life, contentment flows in.
